K. MICHAEL CUMMINGS, PhD; 2005
Michael Cummings is Chairman of the Department of Health Behavior at Roswell Park Cancer Institute
in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Cummings is widely recognized as one of the leading public health scholars in
the field of tobacco control, and is a past member of the FAMRI Medical Advisory Board. He currently
directs the operations of the New York State Smoker’s Quit line and directs the operations of an
international research center devoted to evaluating the impact of approaches to tobacco control. He has
published over 230 peer reviewed scientific papers most of which address the topic of tobacco and health.
Dr. Cummings’s FAMRI project has two primary objectives: 1) to raise awareness of the benefits of
smoke-free initiatives by carefully documenting the levels of indoor tobacco smoke pollution in common
public venues in countries with and without means that protect the public from exposure to tobacco
smoke pollution; and 2) to carefully document the history of scientific research on tobacco and health,
especially as it relates to information about the heath risks of SHS exposure. This project has facilitated air
monitoring studies in over 30 countries around the globe using a standardized data collection protocol.
Dr. Cummings received the 2009 Luther L. Terry Award for Outstanding Research Contribution.
