(Suzuki Academy cont’d) Wilmington Branch Suzuki Academy instruction is available at the Wilmington Branch and on a limited basis at the school’s Pike Creek satellite location (see page 27) and Milford Branch (see page 23). Pike Creek students attend group classes at the Wilmington Branch. The annual Winter Festival, Suzuki Day and Suzuki Graduation take place in Wilmington and are included in Suzuki Academy tuition. All Suzuki students are required to participate in these events, as well as the mandatory dress rehearsals for the Winter Festival and Graduation Concert. Suzuki Day (March 16, 2013) takes place in lieu of regular private lessons, group classes and Suzuki orchestras for the week of March 11-16. PRIVATE STUDY Student and parent/caregiver attend weekly lessons that follow the school’s quarterly lesson schedule. Private study day/time is arranged through the Registrar and is subject to instructor availability. SUZUKI ACADEMY CONCERT STRINGS (Julianne Murphy) Saturdays, 1:15-2:00 p.m. Starting September 15 A first orchestra experience for Suzuki Academy students! String players will learn basic skills necessary for playing in an orchestra, including sitting while playing, sharing a music stand with a partner, following a conductor, basic music-reading, taking notes in the music independently, following rehearsal instructions and playing in a group where there are multiple parts. Students must also participate in weekly group classes. PREREQUISITE: Twinkle Level Graduation GROUP CLASSES Attendance at weekly group classes is mandatory for all Suzuki Academy students and is considered an integral part of the Suzuki method, as students learn crucial listening and social skills by interacting in the group environment. Suzuki group classes alternate between repertoire classes and musicianship classes. All groups meet on Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Specific group assignments are determined by each student’s individual development and advancement through the Suzuki literature. Parents are expected to observe group classes. STRING ORCHESTRAS & SMALL ENSEMBLES Learning to play in an ensemble is crucial for all student instrumentalists! As students progress through the Suzuki curriculum, they may participate in Suzuki Academy Concert Strings, Suzuki Academy Festival Strings or Delaware Youth Symphony Orchestra in addition to group class. Cellists may participate in Cello Choir in lieu of group class. Participation in all ensembles is for the entire academic year and is included in Suzuki Academy tuition. SUZUKI ACADEMY FESTIVAL STRINGS (Julianne Murphy) Saturdays, 2:15-3:00 p.m. Starting September 15 Designed as the next step to prepare string players for acceptance into the Delaware Youth Symphony Orchestra, this orchestra teaches intermediate ensemble and reading skills. Students must also participate in weekly group classes. PREREQUISITE: Twinkle and Level 1 or Level 2 Graduation and minimum one year in Concert Strings DELAWARE YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA See page 18 for complete details. Students must also participate in weekly group classes. PREREQUISITE: Placement audition CELLO CHOIR See page 17 for complete details. Cello Choir may be used in lieu of group classes. pARENT & OTHER CLASSES SUZUKI CLASS FOR NEW PARENTS—PHILOSOPHY OVERVIEW New Suzuki parents (Music School faculty) Saturday, September 8, 2012— 2:00-4:00 p.m. All parents of new Suzuki Academy students are required to attend this introductory class prior to beginning lessons or group classes. Since the Suzuki method is a cooperative experience and the learning process is shared between the teacher, child and parent/caregiver, it is critical that the parent/caregiver understand the basics of the philosophy. ENROLLMENT: One 2-hour session; contact the Front Desk to register PRE-SUZUKI musicianship class 1 to 3 years, with parent/caregiver (Shelley Beard Schleigh and Music School faculty) Saturdays, 9:00-10:00 a.m. Biweekly, starting date TBA Considering enrolling your child in the Suzuki Academy? Meeting every other week, this group music class uses the Suzuki Association of the America’s Suzuki Early Childhood curriculum. The purpose of Suzuki instruction is to enrich the very young child’s life through the inclusion of music. These classes will also prepare students for later instrumental instruction by giving them a firm foundation in pitch and rhythm skills. Like in all early childhood classes, the classes have many other non-musical transferrable life skills. The class is both a great preparation and comprehensive supplement for Suzuki instrumental instruction. ENROLLMENT: Entire academic year TUITION: $160 per 8-class semester (biweekly) MATERIALS: $42 (CD, booklet, Suzuki “Ability Development from Age Zero”) SUZUKI ACADEMY TUITION Tuition for the Wilmington Branch Suzuki Academy includes private study, mandatory weekly group classes, student recital participation (including piano accompaniment fees), Suzuki Academy workshops and events, Suzuki Class for New Parents and elective participation in applicable ensembles. Materials—books, music and CDs—must be purchased separately. Tuition per semester* 30-minute lesson + group class $935 45-minute lesson + group class $1,300 60-minute lesson + group class$1,645 *A 5% discount on tuition applies when entire year’s tuition (2 semesters) is paid in full by September 25, 2012.
