The first courthouse<br />
built on this site (the<br />
6th <strong>in</strong> <strong>Clarksville</strong>’s<br />
history) was<br />
constructed <strong>in</strong> 1879.<br />
Five years later, a<br />
tornado damaged its<br />
roof and the build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
was rebuilt. The first<br />
reunion of <strong>Tenn</strong>essee<br />
Confederate veterans was held here <strong>in</strong> 1888. Gen.<br />
Basil Duke was the first speaker. In 1900, fire ravaged<br />
the build<strong>in</strong>g’s upper floors and clock tower. Aga<strong>in</strong>, the<br />
damage was repaired. The courthouse was destroyed<br />
aga<strong>in</strong> by the January 22, 1999 tornado, and was aga<strong>in</strong><br />
fully restored. Free and open to public.<br />

Post Office and Custom<br />
House to handle the<br />
large volume of foreign<br />
mail created by the city’s<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational tobacco<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess, the structure<br />
<strong>in</strong>corporates many<br />
Victorian architectural<br />
styles <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Stick,<br />
Queen Anne, Italianate,<br />
Romanesque, Flemish and Gothic. Its highly pitched<br />
roof with large eagles on the four corners, steep<br />
gabled w<strong>in</strong>dows and terra cotta ornamentation give<br />
importance to a relatively small build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
October 2013 – The museum opens a permanent<br />
and <strong>in</strong>teractive exhibit entitled Becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Clarksville</strong><br />
– Honor<strong>in</strong>g Legacies of Leadership, a celebration of the<br />
significant leaders and <strong>in</strong>novators who have shaped<br />
<strong>Clarksville</strong>’s development. The exhibit elaborates<br />
