Could you not watch
one hour with me?
n a letter to a child preparing to receive their first Holy Communion,
I Pope John Paul II wrote of the Holy Eucharist, Jesus is the greatest Friend
you will ever have . . . tell Him your secrets, tell Him your joys and the things that
make you sad. Tell Him about the people whom you love. Jesus is inviting you to
be with Him for one special Holy Hour each week. This hour may be spent any
way you want: You may bring your own prayer books, use the books in the
chapel, read the Bible, pray the Rosary, or just sit, relax and enjoy the sweet
peace that comes from being in the Presence of the One Who loves you the
most. You may feel that you cannot pray well. Do not let this discourage you. The
mere fact that you take time out at a specific time each week to spend with Jesus
in the Blessed Sacrament pleases Him very much, and is in itself a prayer of
great faith.
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration lasts as long as Our Lord’s love for us in
the Blessed Sacrament lasts, which is forever. As long as Jesus loves us
enough to want to be with us day and night, then we want to love Him enough to
be with Him day and night. Pope John Paul II says that: He is a God Who is near,
a God Who waits for us, a God Who has chosen to remain with us. When one
has faith in this Real Presence, how easy it is to be close to Him, adoring the
Love of loves, how easy it is to understand the expressions of love with which,
throughout the centuries, Christians have surrounded the Eucharist (Eucharistic
Congress, Peru, 1988).
Jesus is inviting you to spend a special hour with Him! The only time Jesus
asked His friends for anything was when He was in agony at the Garden of Gethsemani.
Jesus said to them, Could you not watch one hour with Me? (Mt 26:40)
Imagine Our Blessed Mother, the Pope, or the President inviting you to set
aside one special hour each week to be with them. You would feel like the most
important person in the world! You would be overjoyed. You would tell all of your
friends about it. You would be faithful every week in keeping your scheduled
time. You would let nothing interfere with your meeting with someone so important
as Our Lady, Our Holy Father, or the President. Should you respond to Our
Blessed Lords invitation with any less enthusiasm? Is Jesus important enough to
you to set aside one special hour each week to be with Him? Just one hour, once
a week, is all that He is asking. This is simply a matter of putting first things first.
In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts
with success (Prov 3:6-10).
Sometimes, because Jesus is veiled in the Sacred Host, people take His
love and Presence for granted. Some people are hesitant in making a commitment
for a specific hour because they let other people and other things come
before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Your faith will make this commitment
easy! Faith is confident assurance concerning what we hope for, and conviction
about things we do not see (Heb 11:1). Your faith will help you realize this with
conviction: The most important thing that you will do this week is spend an hour
with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Think of the words of the Pope, Jesus
waits for us in this Sacrament of Love (Dominicae Cenae, Art. 3).
Your willingness to choose a specific hour is a precious expression of your
faith in Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. By spending a special hour adoring
Jesus each week, you show Him that you love and welcome Him. Do not be
afraid to take a special hour because there may be times that you cannot make
it. There will be a substitute system to accommodate special situations or emergencies.
Think of the words from Scripture: You have nothing to fear from Him!
Get up. He is calling you! (Mk 10:49)
When you get to heaven, Jesus will spend all eternity thanking you and
loving you for your fidelity in spending one specific hour with Him in the Blessed
Sacrament each week. This is why He says, Blessed are those who have not
seen and yet believe. (Jn 20:29)

una hora conmigo?
n una carta a un niño que se preparaba para su Primera Comunión, el
E Papa Juan Pablo II escribió sobre la Eucaristía: Cristo es el más grande
amigo que uno puede tener... dile tus secretos, dile tus alegrías y las cosas que te
ponen triste. Cuéntale de la gente a quien tú quieres. Cristo te está invitando a que
estés con Él una Hora Santa especial cada semana. Esta hora puede pasarse de
la forma en que tú quieras: tú puedes traer tus propios libros de oraciones, usar
los libros que están en la capilla, leer la Biblia, rezar el rosario, o simplemente
sentarte, relajarte y gozar de la paz que viene de estar en la presencia del que
más te ama a tí. Puede que sientas que no puedes orar bien. No dejes que esto te
desanime. El solo hecho de que tú tomes tiempo a una hora específica cada semana
para pasarla con Jesucristo en el Santísimo Sacramento le agrada mucho a
Él, y es en sí misma una oración de gran fe.
La Adoración Eucarística Perpetua dura tanto como dure el amor de Nuestro
Señor por nosotros en el Santísimo, lo que es por siempre. En tanto que Cristo
nos ame lo suficiente como para querer estar con nosotros día y noche, entonces
nosotros queremos amarlo tanto como para estar con Él día y noche. El Papa
Juan Pablo II dijo que: Él es un Dios que está cercano, un Dios que espera por
nosotros, un Dios que ha escogido permanecer con nosotros. Cuando uno tiene fe
en su presencia real, que fácil es estar cerca de Él, adorando al Amor de los
amores, cuán fácil es entender las expresiones de amor con las que, a través de
los siglos, los cristianos han rodeado a la Eucaristía (Congreso Eucarístico, Perú,
1988).
Cristo te está invitando a que pases una hora especial con Él!La única vez
que Cristo pidió algo a sus amigos fue cuando la agonía en el huerto de Getsemaní.
Cristo les dijo: ¿No pudieron velar una hora conmigo? (Mt 26:40)
Imagina a la Santísima Virgen María, al Papa, o al presidente invitándote a que
estés junto a ellos una hora especial a la semana. Tú te sentirías como la persona
más importante en el mundo! Estarías extasiado. Y le dirías a todos tus amigos
sobre esto. Estarías fielmente cada semana cumpliendo tu tiempo asignado. No
dejarías que nada interfiriera para reunirte con alguien tan importante como la
Virgen María, el Santo Padre o el presidente. ¿Acaso debes responder a la invitación
de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo con menos entusiasmo? ¿Es Cristo suficientemente
importante como para que apartes una hora por semana de tu tiempo para
estar con Él? Sólo una hora, una vez a la semana, es todo lo que Él está pidiendo.
Es sencillamente cosa de poner las primeras cosas primero. En todo lo que hagas,
pon primero a Dios, y Él te dirigirá y coronará tus esfuerzos con el éxito
(Prov 3:6-10).
Algunas veces, porque Cristo está velado en la sagrada hostia, la gente toma
su amor y su presencia por rutina. Algunas personas están dudosas de hacer el
compromiso de una hora específica porque ellos dejan que otras personas y otras
cosas vengan primero que Jesucristo en el Santísimo Sacramento. Tu fe hará este
compromiso fácil! La fe es garantía de lo que se espera; la prueba de las realidades
que no se ven. (Heb 11:1). Tu fe te ayudará a aceptar esto con convicción:
la cosa más importante que tú puedes hacer esta semana es pasar una hora con
Jesucristo en el Santísimo Sacramento. Piensa en las palabras del Papa: Jesucristo
espera por nosotros en el Sacramento del Amor (Dominicae Cenae, Art. 3).
Tu voluntad de escoger una hora específica es expresión preciosa de tu fe en
Cristo en el Santísimo Sacramento. Pasando una hora de adoración especial cada
semana, tu le muestras a Él que lo amas y que le das la bienvenida. No te de
miedo tomar una hora específica porque piensas que puede haber muchas veces
que no podrás cumplirla. Habrá un sistema de substitutos para acomodarse a las
situaciones especiales de emergencias. Piensa en las palabras de la Escritura: No
tengas miedo, levántate! Te llama. (Mk 10:49)
Cuando tú vayas al cielo, Jesucristo pasará toda la eternidad agradeciéndote
y amándote por tu fidelildad en pasar una hora específica con Él en el Santísimo
Sacramento cada semana. Es por esto que Él dijo, Bievaventurados los que sin
ver han creído. (Jn 20:29)
