The teachings of the Church permeate the school’s spiritual, academic and social life, forming a “Person for Others.” An update from your alumni association To the Bishop McGuinness Family and Friends: As I enter my second year as the president of the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School Alumni Association, I would like to say it has been an honor to serve my alma mater in this capacity. I also want to thank all of you who support our organization through your generosity and participation. We have an outstanding volunteer board and we strive throughout the school years to benefit the McGuinness community in any way we can. The primary impact of the Alumni Association comes in the form of our sponsorship of annual student financial aid packages for families that qualify as well as supplementing the All Class Alumni Scholarship Fund. We also endeavor to support and influence all of the students of McGuinness in many diverse and positive ways. In order to accomplish these goals the Alumni Association puts on several different events throughout the school year. While some are fun and others are more serious, all are intended to be enjoyable and open to alumni participation. As an organization, the Alumni Association is excited about the upcoming school year and looking forward to again making a significant impact on the McGuinness community. We will again be hosting our largest annual fundraiser in August – McGuinness Trivia Night. A lot of effort and planning goes into the evening and each year it seems to get bigger and better. This year’s Trivia Night will be held on August 18th in The Commons. The next major Alumni Association event after Trivia Night will be the 4th annual Career Day for the seniors in November. This experience has been very popular for the past three years because it gives the students a chance to glimpse several possible paths of interest for life after school. This day would not be possible without all of the great volunteer speakers (most of whom are McGuinness alumni) who come and donate their time and impart their experience on the senior class. In the spring we will have our Public Service Day which in the past has included such activities as working with Habitat for Humanity and a day of landscaping on the beautiful McGuinness campus. We will also have our annual Bingo Night fundraiser in the spring. This event has grown in recent years and is now a large, successful, family-friendly fundraiser. Thereafter, we will finish the school year with our Senior Lunch. Along the way we will mix in several alumni get-togethers in the form of Tailgate Cookouts and Happy Hours which give all alumni a chance to mingle and network in a relaxed atmosphere. I want to thank all of the members of the Alumni Association Board for their volunteer spirit and their pursuit of excellence for our great high school. I also want to thank David Morton, Patricia Hudacko, Sandy Cunningham and Catherine Myers of the administration that help us so much in attaining our goals. Over 400 people turned out for the sixth annual Bishop McGuinness Clancy’s Challenge “Get Your Game On” Trivia Night on Saturday, August 20 in the McGuinness Commons. The event was hosted by the BMCHS Alumni Association but open to anyone. Committee Chairperson was Lisa Corsoro Rooks ’89 and Master of Ceremonies was local newscaster Meg Alexander, of KFOR News. All proceeds from Trivia Night go to the Bishop McGuinness work grant program. After eight rounds of questions, the winner was “Woodward Elks Club.” The team consisted of Carolyn and Bobby Bell, Randy Brown, Ellen and Ron Byrne, Steve and Carol Goetzinger ‘78, Mary and John Tidholm and Gary Peterson. Winners names are engraved on the traveling shillelagh trophy, and is passed from winner to winner each year. The trophy entitles the winning group to complimentary prime seating at next year’s event plus bragging rights for the year. This years event will be held on August 18, 2012. Alumni Sightings BINGO NIGHT HUGE SUCCESS! 6 Hat’s Off to the Class of 1956 who spearheaded a fundraising campaign for the Gleason Scholarship Fund in honor of class member Karen Hutchins Gleason ‘56 and husband, Tom. Almost 150 people attended the BMCHS Irish Family Bingo Night last January in the Commons. Thanks to Bingo chairwoman Carly Wegener and all the members of her committee for their hard work on this project. CONGRATULATIONS to the Class of 1952 who celebrated their 60 year reunion in July! Class of 1982 Reunion New members of the Athletic Hall of Fame are Ricky Manning ‘79; coach Virgil Grantham 1961-66; Marco DeGiusti ’68; Amanda Jordan Van Straten ‘01 and Terrance Crawford ‘00. Also, the 1989 Men’s Basketball State Championship team was honored with Coach Rick Beene representing the team. Representing the 1989 3A Boys State Basketball Champions are: l to r: Steve Skarky, Trey Hansen, David Chansolme, Coach Rick Beene, Jay Clark and Mike McCall.
