This year’s Catholic Challenge was again a big hit with the students from surrounding Catholic Schools coming in and taking part, around 125 students participated in the 8 weeks of mock games and a “Gala Day”. This year was a little different we had the opportunity to offer the program to year 4 students which was the first for the competition. Players were split into 8 even teams which were made up of students from all participating schools. We had 6 year 5,6 and 7 mixed teams and 2 year 4 teams. They were split in 2 pools and played a round robin type competition which meant everyone had to play each other once in the older teams and the year 4 players only had the opportunity to play each other 4 times. Once all teams had played off in their respective pools we then had cross pool play offs. 3v3, 2v2 and 1v1 being the grand final. While both teams were in the dressing sheds being addressed last minute by their respective coaches, the rest of the students formed a tunnel and clapped them out. As you could imagine this helped set the stage for a magnificent game of football to finish such a great day. I would like to congratulate all students involved throughout the competition for their enthusiasm and keenness to learn. I would also like to thank the teachers who helped with week to week travel and Tony McCarthy – Zone 6 sport coordinator for his organisation behind the scenes. Last but not least I would like to thank Paul Dyer from the Brisbane Broncos and Garry Gray from Fuji Xerox for their continued support for this competition. Cyril Connell Cup I would like to make special mention of those boys who represented Norths in the Cyril Connell Cup final against Parramatta, narrowly losing by 2 points on the buzzer. For those who don’t know what the Cyril Connell Cup is, it is a QRL run U16 representative competition. The Norths team in particular is made up of players within the Northern Broncos program which is a program that encompasses 13 other junior football clubs in our area from the ages of 13 - 18. The final cut of 25 had 18 of our players, all of whom played at least one game each. Congratulations to all involved! I wish all Aspley RLFC teams the best of luck for the business end of the season and look forward to enjoying more good footy! Junior Club Captain 2001 marked the year that I joined Aspley Rugby League Football Club as a young 6 year old and I have played every year since. I started playing at Aspley as my father, Glenn had also started at Aspley as a 7 year old and continued his career, with a few breaks in between, until he played his last game for the club when he was in his early 30’s. In 2002 my older brother, Kruise joined after he saw how much I enjoyed the game and then 2 years later my younger brother, Jack registered as a 4 year old. Dad had re-registered a few years later so he could play a few games to claim his 200 games for Aspley so at one point Mum had all 4 of us playing at Aspley. Name: Brandon Collins D.O.B: 6 th Sept 1995 Height: 177cm Weight: 72kg Position: Utility Debut year for Aspley: 2001 (U7) Aspley Seasons: 13 Coach Education The start of the year is the time to work extra hard with the players on the fundamentals skills such as, grip, catch, pass, tackle technique, draw pass, wrestle technique, team structures etc We were lucky enough to have NRL and Broncos Game Development Officers assist with the process on many occasions and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the following people for doing so, Sarah Walker, Wayne Weekes, Paul Dyer, Michael Hancock, Mick De Vere, Darren Burns, Col Henschell and Simona Vavega. Your time and effort were very much appreciated by all. I have also experienced the annual exchange with Aspley and the Wentworthville Junior Rugby League Club in Under 13’s. Over this weekend we were cared for and entertained by our billets. This year is a very emotional and proud one, firstly being nominated for the role of Junior Club Captain and then being accepted for this role by the Committee and secondly it’s my last year playing football as a junior, although I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead within the seniors.
