We started out in 1991. At the first Eurobike show, 

our first self-made frames saw the light. In that same 

year, we developed our first carbon MTBs and racing 

bikes. 

STEVENS was founded by Werner and Wolfgang 

von hacht, two brothers who are long time enthusiasts 

about the sport of cycling. This was the birth of a new 

german brand that since then has established excellent 

reputation, in germany as well as internationally. 

The bikes made in hamburg are sold in 24 countries, 

and there are 500 authorized STEVENS retailers – just 

in germany. over the last years, retailers have elected 

the STEVENS bikes three times as best in “brand

attractiveness”, and in 2010 we were even named 

“best bike vendor of all brands” (SAZ). Naturally, we’re 

quite proud of these awards. Sometimes we still 

reminisce about the ground-breaking reviews of our 

mountain bikes “7.1.2” and “8.1.2”–which achieved 

best ratings in renowned bike magazines – or the firstplace 

of our Italian racing frame “STEVENS Star”, back 

in ‘95 and ‘96. 

Since then, our bikes have earned numerous decorations. 

The STEVENS “Jazz”, which won the Stiftung 

Warentest test in 2004, lay ground to our current success 

in the trekking and city segments. The crowning 

award might have been the “Milestone of the year 

2009”, which the STEVENS “Xenith” earned last year. 

We also take great pride in the athletes we support: 

They repay our support with championship titles and 

highly valuable feedback about our bikes. Among 

them are german champions, European champions, 

World champions and olympic medalists, together 

representing STEVENS in almost any kind of bike racing: 

road racing, triathlons, cyclocross, time trials and 

mountain bike racing, only to name a few. 

True professionals like Jens Schwedler, Mike Kluge, 

hanka Kupfernagel, Marianne Vos, daniel unger, Lisa 

Norden, ralf Eggert, Philipp Walsleben, Niels Albert, 

Katie Compton, Amber Neben and Arnaud Jouffroy 

direct our attention to aspects that may enhance the 

performance of STEVENS bikes even further. Belgian

In the STEVENS research and development department, 

our engineers and technicians find ideal 

conditions. The laboratory is a dream-come-true 

for any engineer obsessed with bike-development. 

It features modern high-performance computers, 

the latest software and state-of-the-art analogue 

test benches. The test range right beyond our front 

doors needs a mention, too. 

In this office ideas and suggestions are applied to 

the STEVENS bikes. If one of our top athletes suggests 

an improvement to his bike, we review and 

test it thoroughly. If it works, we‘ll make good 

use of it. Many innovations for our Cyclocross and 

road bikes have been implemented this way and we 

will be continuing to do so. 

of course, our development department also runs 

its own tests, independent of the opinion of racing 

professionals: for instance, the stiffness of the bottom 

bracket and head set of our frames is measured, 

and forks need to prove how comfortable and 

stiff they are. 

It is here that suspension components get finetuned 

for the STEVENS bikes. All our theoretical 

creations are put to the acid test before they 

are released to the streets as technically mature 

STEVENS bikes. 

Should we find a single flaw – no matter how 

small – the process of development, construction, 

building and testing is repeated once more, until 

every single test is passed and all members of the 

development team are satisfied. 

And our developers aren‘t easily satisfied: a maximum 

of esthetic functionality needs to be attained. 

By the way, our engineers prefer to test outside on 

the actual road – or on the trails. Just to ensure our 

bikes exhibit that special vibe our computers can‘t 

quite put their virtual fingers on.

Nevertheless, the tensile strength of carbon fiber 

is four times higher than that of the best steel alloy. 

The longitudinal stiffness can even be six times that 

of aluminum. Individual carbon filaments in isolation 

cannot be processed, that’s why they are bundled by 

roving. roving is weaved into fabric and impregnated 

with an epoxy resin. 

For years, this combination of carbon fiber and resin 

has been setting the stiffness-weight-ratio benchmark. 

But to unfold its true potential, it needs to be 

used as intelligently, and, most importantly, efficiently 

as possible. our STEVENS developers and engineers 

have the knowledge and know-how to build perfectly 

thought-through carbon frames through the use of 

particularly intelligent carbon fiber layups. For example, 

they can build rear sections that show high lateral 

stiffness, but are vertically flexible. This may sound 

quite technical, but for the rider it simply means: minimal 

waste of pedaling effort, because your muscle 

power is directed towards the pavement. 

At the same time, because of its ability to show 

some vertical flexibility, the carbon frame is more 

comfortable. But it‘s not just the alignment of the 

fabric: the thickness and even the alignment of 

individual fibers in the fabric itself can be crucial.

Since 2006 you have been working closely with 

STEVENS. You designed the Fluent and Glide 

series, two very successful and renowned full 

suspension bikes. What were your goals during 

the development of the enduro Ridge 2011? 

don’t you always have to combine opposites in suspension 

development? on the one hand you want 

comfort and great suspension characteristics, on 

the other you try to create stiff and efficient frames. 

How do you achieve a good balance between 

the two? 

That’s exactly the challenge! using a 4-pivot “horst- 

Link” (or: classic 4-pivot) already lays the foundation 

to a lightweight but stiff chassis. But then, especially 

with large suspension travel, you have to adjust 

the kinematics with great care so that there are no 

disadvantages for the suspension characteristics. 

I’m quite proud of the successful combination of all 

these properties on the STEVENS ridge. 

Both STEVENS Glide and Ridge 2011 feature a 

modified concept for the rear section, the Fluent 

now has 120mm of suspension travel in the back 

and the front. Is there a trend towards increased

suspension travel? What did you change? 

definitely, bikes in all categories are getting more 

suspension travel. But this is due to the fact that the 

kinematics are getting better and better, while variable 

suspension travel eliminates all disadvantages. 

Additionally, for 2011 STEVENS bicycles come with 

superb balance of the front and rear suspension, 

and the glide and the ridge feature stiffer frames 

and X12 through-axles. 

What’s the secret of the “Anti-Squat Kinematics” 

of the STEVENS full suspension bikes? 

Anti-squat means the ability to transform the pedaling 

force into propulsion without loss of energy. 

Reviews in magazines point out the difference 

between pedal bob and pedal feedback. What’s 

more relevant? 

This is a very difficult question, as there’s no right or 

wrong answer. The STEVENS rear sections follow 

the “as much as necessary and as little as possible” 

principle. The advantages of the first need to 

eliminate the disadvantages of the latter. Specifically: 

if I don’t want to have pedal feedback (this is 

only possible in one specific gear and with specific 

adjustment), I automatically get pedal bob. If I don’t 

want any pedal bob (i.e. 100% anti-squat), I will have 

to put up with some pedal feedback. My completely 

personal opinion is this: Anti-squat (no energy 

loss uphill) has slightly higher priority, because it 

improves the kinematic response characteristics 

(better downhill characteristics) at the same time. 

Actually, in practice modern kinematics with these 

priorities show only very minimal pedal feedback. 

Can you give a few hints for a long and problemfree 

lifetime of a suspension bike? 

First of all you need sound bearings for the rear 

section, but you should also take care to avoid 

common mistakes: Steam cleaning should never be 

used to clean anything but the tires, if at all. Never 

steam clean bearings or drive train components! 

Apart from that, STEVENS rear sections are built 

with proven technology, and in case service really is 

necessary, parts can be repaired or replaced even 

after many years of use. Maintenance-free, doubly 

sealed rolling bearings as well as special bearings 

are used, each kind in the places where it’s the most 

appropriate.

What does STEVENS mean to you? What are 

your experiences with the equipment? 

From the very first moment, I loved the STEVENS 

bikes. The geometry is perfect and the bike simply 

feels great. The Carbon Team is very stiff, lightweight 

and compliant. Almost as if the ability to get 

ahead right at the start was built-in. 

You participate in top level cyclocross races, 

you are often among the top 5 at the mountain 

bike world cup and you also do track cycling. 

How do you manage to compete in such a wide 

range of races? 

I just love cycling – and with varied disciplines it‘s 

even more interesting. I like the speed, the power 

and the technique you need for cyclocross, the fun 

factor of mountain biking and the pure speed on the 

track. I also believe that the three disciplines complement 

each other well and thus make me a better 

cyclist in general. 

What do you think of the handling of the new 

STEVENS Scope? 

I think it was designed for exceptional handling. It 

quickly responds to your commands—not too fast,

however. With the STEVENS Scope, I can master 

tight turns or technically demanding passages very 

easily. 

The popularity of Cyclocross in the US keeps 

growing, right? 

yes, its popularity is growing every year. There are 

more and more riders who shift their focus towards 

cyclocross and plan their season according to the 

cyclocross events. In the past you would do that for 

MTB races or for the road racing season. The uS 

cross scene is different from these – the events are 

always very entertaining, the spectators are as euphoric 

as the athletes and want to try it themselves! 

What are your next major goals – in sport and for 

your life? 

Naturally I want to win more races, first and foremost 

the cyclocross world championships. I want 

to develop my mountain bike skills further and 

qualify for London 2012. generally, I‘d like to stick 

with cycling as long as I achieve good results and 

don‘t suffer from injuries. 

After my active career as an athlete I will definitely 

switch to coaching – I‘m just a cyclist by conviction! 

If that doesn‘t work out I‘ll go to college, preferably 

choosing something in the medical field.

Sanne, you’re quite young and yet you already 

have won both the Belgian mountain bike and 

cyclocross championships, at the age of 17 and 

18 years. What’s the secret of your success? 

I believe the secret lies in my character and my 

endurance. I always want to win. of course, training, 

talent and technique are very important, too. 

When you ride a mountain bike, do you still have 

an eye for the nature and your surroundings or 

are you completely concentrating on your speed 

and your performance? 

When I‘m training, I like to take a look around and 

appreciate nature. When I‘m in a race, I concentrate 

completely on my pace. And from time to time also 

on my opponents... 

Regarding the handling, what‘s the biggest difference 

between a Carbon Cyclocross bike and 

a Carbon MTB? 

That’s hard to explain, but I’ll still try: a mountain 

bike is slower in the turn and after the turn. A 

cyclocross bike is a lot faster and more explosive. 

you can ride much faster on a cyclocross bike than 

on a MTB. But downhill the MTBs are unbeatable, 

especially when it’s getting rough. And the modern 

disk brakes decelerate like an anchor. 

Would you like to try a full suspension bike 

some time? 

definitely! I think it would really be an advantage 

during long downhills with a lot of pebble and rocks. 

Do you have an idol? 

Marianne Vos is my greatest idol, it‘s unbelievable 

how she rides. I also look up to hanka Kupfernagel. 

Next season I want to beat my idols... 

Can you give a tip for women who want to start 

mountain biking? What’s important? 

Naturally, the seating position is important. But good 

technique-training is of utmost importance. Without 

the proper technique you won’t achieve anything. 

Furthermore, it’s important to drink a lot, and wearing 

functional clothing is essential, too. 

You call your STEVENS bike “the best bike I ever 

rode”. What‘s so special about it? 

It’s very fast and very agile. you don’t lose speed in 

the turns. Also, the frame geometry is great—I have 

never ridden on a better bike. 

What are you goals in sport and for your life? 

I want to win a few titles and want to be better than 

last year, that way I can get even closer to the world 

elite. And I want to stay healthy.
