EXPLORING THE CAUSES OF DISENGAGEMENT<br />
AND CONSIDERING POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS<br />
Following their early stage of exploration (surveys, interviews, classroom<br />
observations), the project group led a whole staff meeting with all 200 teachers that<br />
focused on identifying potential causes of disengagement and considered how they<br />
might be addressed. Key findings of the work undertaken in the first phase of the<br />
project (2014) were also presented at the College Annual Staff Conference, signalling<br />
to the entire school the critical importance of tackling engagement.<br />

Shift the emphasis from short term assessment to<br />
long term relevance<br />
Learning is teacher-centred not student-centred<br />
Get parents, teachers and students working<br />
towards shared learning goals<br />
Lack of connection to students’ real lives<br />
Students don’t see future value<br />
Foster a culture where knowledge and skills are<br />
valued<br />
Students (and their learning) are motivated by<br />
results, not love of learning<br />
