theme brunches, gastronomic evenings, culinary workshops, etc.
And that's not all as some of them will have the opportunity to
welcome world-renowned chefs in their kitchen.
WELCOME TO THE MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS FESTIVAL
5 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS FROM FEBRUARY 19 TO 29, 2004
EXPERIENCE MONTREAL’S UNIQUE CITY BEAT
DURING 11 DAYS OF NON-STOP FESTIVITIES!
From the crisp, cold air on the streets to fireside warmth that crackles with
Latin charm, Montréal winters are truly unique. Making them even more special,
and making the most of the city’s delightful qualities, the MONTREAL
HIGH LIGHTS Festival celebrates its Fifth Anniversary with a new format,
offering 11 days of extraordinary creativity with stellar performances, culinary
delights and explosive entertainment.
Star Chefs from all over the world taking part at the SAQ Wine and Dine
Experience have already made the MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS Festival
just about the best place to eat anywhere. And the 5 th anniversary edition will
only solidify that reputation, during its 11-day run, this year focusing on the
Rhône-Alpes region of France whose fine restaurants and vineyards have
earned it this year’s “region of honour” title, embodied in chef Georges Blanc,
our 2004 Honorary President. And in keeping with our tradition of honouring
an American city at the Festival, this year we’ll be featuring Boston, in
recognition of the great chefs who’ve lately been emerging from that fair city.
We are thrilled to raise the curtain on the Sun Life Financial Performing
Arts series program for this 5 th anniversary edition which will feature
among others, two world-renowned cutting-edge creators who will
act as Honorary Co-Presidents of the series : Robert Lepage and
Laurie Anderson, each one presenting world premiere events. Once again,
we will be staging unique performances created especially for the event
and spotlighting new discoveries such as Barbara Hendricks, The Lord of
the Rings Symphony and many more.
And don’t miss all the free activities going on every night on the Festival’s luminous
outdoor site for the Hydro-Québec Celebration of Light. We will be presenting
fireworks, sound and light performances, a MegaBarbecue, live DJ’s,
lasers shows, the much anticipated Montreal All-Nighter, and other surprises.
Montréal and winter! Now there’s something to celebrate! And we intend to
do just that. To those of you returning to make this yet another memorable
event, welcome back! And to those of you curious to know what all the
spotlights are for, they’re for you! Have a great Festival!
the fireworks and don’t miss the closing Loto-Québec Fireworks on february 29 th
LIGHT SHOWS AND PERFORMANCES
If you need to warm up, there will be action inside the Complexe Desjardins with a
daily presentation of a laser show, Guignol Theater and a spectacular show on both
Saturdays of the Festival.
LIVE DJ SETS
through Saint-Catherine Street. And you can go again, and again, and again…
EVERYBODY LIGHTS UP AT NIGHT!
There will be continuous activities and guaranteed fun for the entire family, with
fairy-like characters, luminous flamenco dancers, percussionists, giant insects on stilts
and more animation to light up the evening.
cheese selections and inside the large, heated Hydro-Québec Café tent in a warm,
comfortable, lively area where you can also have a bite. New this year, take advantage
of the daily outdoor MegaBarbecue!
TWO PHOTO EXHIBITS!
The site will be having another great outdoor photography exhibit this year called
"Backstage" and will bring you into the secret world of creators as they prepare behind
the scenes. Another exhibit is shown indoors in the Place des Arts lobby with Raphael
Helle’s study of the December 8 Festivities of the Fête des Lumières in the medieval
French city of Lyon.
THREE HOT SPOTS TO WARM UP!
Daily bread...
à la Montréal
“No wonder Epicureans everywhere make
regular pilgrimages to Montréal—this is where their
taste buds come to worship at the shrines of the most
sophisticated, most creative chefs in the world.”
In Montréal food is a religion. Feasting on five-course meals is eating as usual,
and Montréal’s reputed chefs deliver, with artistic spreads designed to feed the body
as well as pleasure the senses. Locals dine late and linger long, while Epicureans
everywhere make regular pilgrimages to Montréal. There’s even a major festival,
MONTRÉAL HIGH LIGHTS, to celebrate the wondrous savoir-faire
of favourite chefs. So come discover our true nature,
and savour every pleasure of
life… à la Montréal.
Montréal à la carte
May we recommend our great packages,
some including dinner for two at a famous
restaurant, and our Sweet Deals* with your
The Busker’s Opera
A Musical Theatre Piece created by
ROBERT LEPAGE
Musical Director : Martin Bélanger
With : Frédérike Bédard, Martin Bélanger, Julie Fainer,
Claire Gignac, Frédéric Lebrasseur, Véronika Makdissi-Warren,
Kevin McCoy, Steve Normandin, Marco Poulin and Jean René.
The Busker’s Opera
Somewhere between a Broadway musical and a
road movie, The Busker's Opera takes a peek at
what remains of musical freedom once it’s been
through the wringer of show business.
Photos: Érick Labbé
« Le Québécois
Édouard Lock
est l’homme de
cette fin d’année »
Le Monde, Paris
The very first performance of The Beggar's Opera took place in
London on January 28th, 1728, creating an immediate sensation
and attracting considerable crowds. By taking aim at government
corruption under the guise of a spoof of Italian opera (much in
fashion at the time) the comic piece by John Gay struck a hugely
popular note.
Loosely adapted from Gay's work, Robert Lepage's The Busker's
Opera constitutes a new piece of musical theatre or, more
precisely, a "songspiel" in the sense that the story is entirely told
through song.
The show gathers actors, singers, musicians and a DJ who
collectively created 30 songs that adapt John Gay’s work to a
present-day context. However, the characters, in this case aren’t from
a world of petty crime, but the insidious world of show business.
All types of musical genres are represented within the up-beat,
satirical performance, from ska, reggae and jazz to blues, country,
disco and rap. Irreverent and explosive, the work also includes, in
parallel, pieces composed by John Pepusch for the original London
production.
Robert Lepage stipulated that his latest creation be presented at the
Spectrum concert club, inasmuch as the piece is essentially a musical.
OPENING SHOW
in collaboration with the MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS Festival and
THE LYON OPERA BALLET
Boléro et autres lumières sur Ravel
Director: Yorgos Loukos
For the opening show, the Lyon Opera Ballet will present Boléro et autres lumières sur
Ravel. Three pieces will be performed: Gaspar, choreographed by Tero Saarinen, is
somewhat of an X-ray of the mind of a man. At first sweet and charming, the piece
evolves into a passionate drama of seduction. Based on the minuet from Tombeau
de Couperin and Pavane pour une infante défunte, Un Ballo is an extraordinary musical
exercise between partners, a dance for dance itself and a marriage by choreographer
Jirí Kylián of those two timeless pieces of music. In Boléro, the centerpiece for
this fascinating tribute to Ravel, a “filter” of screens and curtains reduces and expands
the sensation of space.
