Message froM The exeCuTive DireCTor Who knew that lyrics sung by a bunch of guys in funny hats in 1980 would reverberate throughout 2008? “Freedom of Choice” by Devo was a song we heard quite a number of times on KEXP last year. No, it wasn’t due to a radical resurgence in the popularity of Devo. Rather, it was their words, “I’ll say it again in the land of the free/Use your freedom of choice” which held a particular resonance during a year of change for our communities. Periods of transition often bring out the best in people. What we experienced in 2008 was certainly demonstrative of that. KEXP exists to champion the music and discovery that enriches all our lives. As the world experienced change and challenge in 2008, the KEXP community focused on the positive; the events of the world would not sap our strength. We chose instead to power one of the things that makes our daily lives better - music. KEXP matters a lot to all of us, so it is paramount that we responsibly use your investments to strengthen our services, and ensure this resource is positioned to thrive for years to come. That’s why we spent much of 2008 undergoing a thorough strategic planning process, facilitated through a pro-bono partnership with McKinsey and Company, to identify the areas of greatest opportunity to bring more music into your lives and to our community. While we looked ahead, we seized compelling partnership opportunities that will help us bring more music into people’s lives, now. We launched Radio Liberation, a partnership with Radio New York, after 18 months of careful planning, for our current New York listeners and millions of potential listeners. Now, one of the strongest arts cultures in the world benefits from 39 hours of original KEXP programming on 91.5FM. This partnership also gives KEXP the privilege to act as an ambassador of the Pacific Northwest’s vibrant music scene to our friends on the east coast. We focused on expanding into new areas, exceeding the scope of traditional radio. We introduced video podcasts of our live performances, launched a newly designed website, partnered with the Seattle Center to present the free KEXP Concerts at the Mural series bringing memorable music experiences KexP executive Director at the launch of our live at KexP compilation. Photographer: gregory Perez to more people, and participated in the Music Advisory Committee, which counseled Mayor Greg Nickels and the Seattle Office of Film and Music on the recently launched Seattle City of Music initiative. I’m happy to report that while our services were better than ever, so too was our supporting business infrastructure. By design, a strategic planning process helps an organization look forward. In KEXP’s case, this period of reflection and assessment landed just as we began experiencing the early signs of the weakening economy. Therefore, this watchful planning and recalibrating helped us reduce non-critical operating expenses while maintaining a high level of service and increasing our cash reserves. In 2009 and beyond, we look forward to implementing our Strategic Plan and pursuing our work toward its two new initiatives: expanding our web based and new media services, and envisioning and creating a new home for KEXP. Although we have needed to scale back some of the ambition initially outlined in the plan due to the economy, we are already making progress on these two initiatives. I want to thank the thousands of individuals who stepped forward and chose music in 2008 – the 12,849 donors, 209 business supporters, 649 volunteers and interns, the countless number of artists who contributed their time and talents, and the 80 KEXP staffers. Your combined efforts made 2008 a remarkable year for KEXP. Music is a priority in our lives. Our quest to discover new sounds spurs us in our daily work, and in the way we choose to share our music experience with those around us. KEXP is truly a community inspired by great music. With your investment and partnership, we will ensure that artists and music lovers have the freedom of voice for years to come. 3
