serving an auDienCe of MusiC lovers
KEXP listeners benefit from special music experiences in which inventive DJs curate the sound and feel of 34 unique music
shows. In 2008, approximately 105,000 people tuned in weekly to 90.3FM KEXP in Seattle, and tens of thousands more tuned
in from around the world to KEXP’s live web streams to be inspired, and educated, and to discover the soundtrack of their lives.
That large responsibility rested in the skillful hands of more than 40 expert DJs and programming staff, who are given the
creative freedom to weave a soundscape that includes emerging and established musicians from nearly every genre of music.
KEXP listeners are curious and technologically savvy, so our web-based services play a significant role in executing our
mission to enrich lives through music and discovery. In 2008, people downloaded more than 14 million podcasts, viewed
the KEXP Blog more than 650,000 times, and visited KEXP.ORG more than 8 million times.
In October, our Online Services team unveiled a new website design, which brings users improved ways to discover and
learn about music. It also lays a solid foundation for future ‘new media’ services, one of which includes using KEXP.ORG
as a gathering place, where music lovers can convene to discuss sounds, artists, and other topics of interest to the
KEXP community.
KEXP’s way of presenting music is rare, and large numbers of people, hungry to discover new music, have few opportunities
to do so. As a service-driven non-profit organization operating within a commercial media market, it is our job to ensure that
independent artists have a voice and music audiences, both near and far, can connect with this meaningful art.
Beginning in March 2008, KEXP entered into a well-considered partnership with Radio New York. The partnership introduced
three new programs, curated for a New York audience, and a simulcast of The Morning Show with host John Richards for 15
hours a week. In its first eight months, Radio Liberation reached nearly 100,000 listeners each week on 91.5FM.
Radio Liberation’s impact is threefold: it exposes a broader audience to great music, enables KEXP to act as ambassador
of Pacific Northwest artists to a new community of music lovers, and provides listeners everywhere with exclusive in-studio
performances from artists who play only in New York, or who don’t plan to pass through Seattle.
