On September 11 th 201 5, Serena Williams lost to Italy's Roberta Vincio at the US
Open. She was on a path to history on becoming one of four female players in to
win all WTA grand slams in a calendar year. A feat that has not been done since the
great Stefi Graf completed it in 1 988.
As we watched Serena lose in the semi-finals, I was convinced more than ever that
we can all learn something from this phenomenal woman. As we admire one of the
greatest sporting champions in the world perform, I believe that it is just as important
to learn from her greatness as well as her failures. We must find
our own greatness and be a champion in our own lives.
Whatever it is that you are trying to achieve in business or in life,
you can be just as successful in your own right.
Here are just a few things that I believe we can learn from
Serena:
Never Give Up
We hear this ALL THE TIME, but how many of us really understand
what this means? Never giving up means that even when you lose you
have to keep on trying. If there's something in your life that you are
trying to accomplish but challenges and barriers keep getting in your
way, take the time to assess a new way of thinking or find a new
strategy. Quite often people give up on their goals because of failures
and losses along the way but it is not the goal that is impossible,
sometimes it is the strategy of achieving that goal that is not working.
You have to learn from a loss or failure and use it to motivate you
further. When Serena loses a game she doesn't focus on the loss as a
disadvantage she sees it as a chance to work on being even better
and finds a way to win.
Be Gracious and Grateful When You Win
Even when you know you are a winner, be grateful for your wins in every aspect of
your life. Wherever your success takes you, gratitude and respect to all those who
have been your cheerleaders and supporters throughout your life is so important.
Gratitude leads to abundance and it is also a sign of true inner beauty in my
opinion, which is one of the things I admire most about Serena.
"I measure my success
not through recognition or
awards, but through the
satisfaction of our clients."
- Olivia Patterson
1
Are you a young person, just getting
settled in your career and ready to
purchase your first property?
Why do you need a single family houseno
children? Instead, start your real estate portfolio with
a triplex or four-plex. Live in one and rent out the
other; someone else helps to pay your mortgage, you
gain equity and tax write offs.
2
Are you more mature, settled, own
your home? Thinking about diversifying
your investments with real estateyou hear
that fixing and flipping is a great way to
make some cash and build wealth. Can be risky,
time consuming and has a major learning curve.
Purchasing units can provide a cash flow and future
wealth thru appreciation. If you are not a handiperson
or not interested in hands on property
maintenance, purchasing a building with eight+ units
may cash flow enough to pay for a property manager.
3
Are you a seasoned investor with
many properties? Congratulations! If
you have steady income and equity, you
have accomplished what many dream of.
Job well done. If your portfolio is a collection of
single family homes, duplexes, and small buildings
and you have been doing the property management
over the years; it may be time to Stop working hard
for your real estate and let your real estate work
for you! At this point in life instead of answering late
night emergency calls or chasing tenants for rents,
you should be chasing grandchildren and sunsets
around the world. Have you considered leveraging
all of those little properties into one or two large
buildings or commercial property that will not only
give you a better ROI, but will also pay for its own
maintenance and management?
Whichever your scenario, I can help. Send your
Social media is hard. Success is hard. There comes a point in your
business or life when you have to decide if you’re going to hangout by
the water cooler with people who are also talking about why they can’t
get ahead – or do the hard work that will make you the star of your
office or in your industry....
1 8
Inglewood Business Magazine October - December 2015

Social media communications is much the same. It’s
not a mystery why Ford crushes their competition in
the social media space – they have been doing it for
close to ten years. In Malcolm Gladwell's groundbreaking
book “Outliers”, he talked about in-depth
research that points to the fact that it takes 1 0,000
hours to become a master at a subject or industry
vertical. Olympians train for years for that one
moment of glory. Top performing insurance salesmen
make 50 calls a day in order to reach the top 5% of
their industry. Google is wasn't an overnight success,
it was founded in 1 998. You get the picture.
Multi-millionaire and direct selling pioneer Jim Janz
once said, "It takes 6 months to look like a leader, 1 2
months to become a leader (in his business) and 1 8
to 24 months to build a loyal community that trusts
you and follows you."
Taking into account what Jim said, – have you
noticed other business owners no longer being
proactive or willing to invest in their social media
efforts? It seems that they have been doing it for
months but the return on investment isn’t there yet.
Seemingly wise business owners are doing this en
masse. It took them years to build their brand and
trust but somehow community building and
proficiency in doing so with social media should
somehow defy all other conventional business rules.
It takes time to build something that will last. Most
business owner or executives just want to write a
check like they’re buying a TV ad and have instant
results. It doesn’t work that way.
There are over 1 .9 billion people globally using social
media to connect, collaborate and yes make buying
decisions. It’s hard work to get their attention, add
value, build a relationship and convert them to
clients. The reality is social media and social
networks are here to stay. In fact they are becoming
the primary drivers of buying decisions by senior
executives and the general public.
What’s the solution?
Eventually you need to become a social business. If
your customers prefer Twitter, Facebook and
Instagram as communications tools vs the phone (as
in voice calls) and watching TV, then why force them
to use email and the phone? While you’re resisting
change your competitors are building community and
gaining future customers.
Here's a few questions you should ask yourself...
• What’s the natural buying process that my
customer follows?
• Where do they get their information?
• Who influences their buying decision?
• How do I get above the noise of my competitors?
• How to I connect with them personally and build
real rapport?
• How do I equip my entire team to be social not just
the marketing team?
Social media and social networks when combined
with a solid strategy and plan are the answers to
these questions. But it’s a discipline and a shift for
many in the way they do business. It’s not a silver
bullet, and it’s not an ad campaign you can support
for a few months and then move onto something
new. It’s about building a community and also
building competency in all departments in social
media communications. (Continued on next page)
Social Media Continued...
So here’s the deal. If you want instant results, with
millions of followers and massive brand recognition
and no need to engage or empower your staff to be
social ambassadors, don’t use social media. BUT
realize that that “nice to have” social media
competency will at some point become a need at the
crisis level.
If you’re willing to pay the price, invest the energy and
forge bullet-proof relationships with customers in the
next 24-36 months then maybe social media is
something you’re ready to invest in. What it isn’t at
first it is at last. Investing in building a large
community and real relationships online creates an
asset that can keep paying for years – but anything
worthwhile take effort and discipline.
Mr. Little, an Inglewood business operator for 1 5
years, was recently appointed as president of the
Inglewood Airport Area Chamber of Commerce after
serving the Chamber for nearly 1 0 years as a board
member and member of its Executive Committee.
Little is the past president of Inglewood Partners for
Progress, a coalition of some of the largest
businesses in the city historically called the Big Five.
The partners included Centinela Medical Center,
Hollywood Park Race Track and Casino, The
Forum, and Inglewood Park Cemetery. Its
partnership with the city made it a unique publicprivate
coalition. Together, these entities worked to
enhance the city’s image, attract new businesses,
and promote safety and the quality of life for all
Inglewood residents.
“Under new leadership and with the goal of
strengthening the Chamber, these anchor
businesses will become the founding members of
the new President’s Circle within the Chamber
adding to its over 300 general members,” Little said.
Little’s focus in his first term will be to lift the
Chamber for all businesses in order to compliment
the upward trajectory of the city under the
leadership of Mayor James T. Butts and the City
Council. This will include building a solid
infrastructure for leadership, technology,
membership growth, and hosting programs and
events benefitting business owners and their
employees. “The Chamber must exist as a
necessary resource for all businesses and be a
welcoming hand in the city that offers support and
fosters growth,” Little said.
Little earned his Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast
Journalism from the University of Southern
California, his Juris Doctorate from the Gould
School of Law at the University of Southern
California and a Masters in Christian Leadership
from Fuller Theological Seminary.
As the former chief operating officer and general
counsel of The Forum Enterprises, the for-profit
owner of the Forum from December 2000 to April
201 2, Little led a team of professionals who
successfully sold the Forum to Madison Square
Garden which sale sparked the revitalization of
Inglewood. The sale brought more than $1 00
million in direct investment by Madison Square
Garden as a result of its renovation of the Forum.
Little maintains a strong connection to Inglewood as
the chief executive officer of Champions for
Progress, the non-profit community development
division of Faithful Central Bible Church, among the
largest black congregations in Inglewood under the
leadership of Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer.
Organizational governance is not new to the
Chamber’s new president. Little sits on the
governing boards of Centinela Medical Center-a Top
1 00 Hospital, and Claris Health-a licensed
pregnancy medical clinic. Both serve the
Inglewood community with quality health care
services. Little is also a former member of the News
Corporation (Fox) Diversity Committee and is a
former Trustee of the Savannah College of Art and
Design. Little is also the current Vice Chair of the
Center for Urban Renewal and Education (C.U.R.E.)
a policy think-tank in Washington, DC and an
advisor to several senior pastors across the country.
Little values education and spends a lot of his time
ensuring educational opportunities for all students.
A portion of his time is spent at Crown Preparatory
Academy a public charter middle and high school in
Los Angeles where he is a founding board member.
Little is also a member of the Measure GG
Oversight Committee for the Inglewood Unified
School District responsible (continued on Page 35)
(STEM) is an acronym referring to the academic disciplines
of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
STEM is important. Students prepared in STEM-related disciplines enjoy higher starting salaries and
lower unemployment rates than the population at large. The benefits of a quality STEM program
transcend gender, ethnicity, geographic region, and education level. Many communities recognize the
value of STEM education for regional economic development and are forging meaningful partnerships
between schools and nonprofits as well as business and industry leaders.
In 1 992, The A-MAN Center was founded by the highly regarded
educator/entreprenuer Bettye Walker, Ph.D and her husband, noted
scientist/philanthropist, Hildreth “Hal” Walker, Jr. Their mission is to
Music helps children think by
fostering creativity, teaching effective
communication skills and encouraging the
abiding values of self-discipline, self-discovery
and self-expression. Music lessons also increase
spatial and cognitive abilities in children
which helps them with Math and Science.
We are proud to have one of the most comprehensive
teaching studios on the westside. With
more than 200 students and 1 2 teachers in our
musical network, we can provide lessons in:
GUITAR, BASS, DRUMS, PERCUSSION, PI-
ANO, KEYBOARD, CLARINET, SAX, FLUTE,
PICCOLO, TRUMPET, TROMBONE, VIOLIN,
CELLO AND VOICE. All teachers are Musician
Institute graduates or the equvalent and have
been live scanned for your peace of mind.
Delian Music has been
in business for over 65
years, 40 under the
Blankership name. “I attribute
the store’s
longevity to a couple of
things", says owner Candace Blankenship (pictured).
"Keeping costs down as much as I can
and keeping Delian small and personal. I
would also say it is kind of 'hokey.' In this era
of impersonality, big box stores and product
over-saturation, I think, 'hokey' serves as a
nice change of pace."
Delian Music pretty much takes the guess work
out of first-time buyers of musical instruments.
When customers come to Delian to sign up for
music lessons, they also need a good inexpensive
entry-level instrument so they can
practice their lessons. Instead of having every
major brand name under the sun for every wallet
and level of player, Delian offers just one or two
models of the BEST of what they consider good
entry level instruments because they cater to the
beginner. Delian does not sell the most expensive
nor the least expensive instruments.“The last thing
a person needs is to be confused about a beginning
first-time instrument. This is where my almost 30
years of being in this business pays off,” says Candace
Blankenship. “You can use my expertise and
years of shopping for music instruments. Even
though our instruments are entry level, you would
still be proud to own one for years to come.” Delian
Music is not a catalog company and they aren’t a
music mega-store. Delian Music is a small neighborhood
store that concentrate their efforts on first
time music instrument Please feel free to give
Delian Music a call or drop by to see how we can
help with your music needs. They are located at
550 W. Manchester Blvd. Inglewood, Ca 90301
(One block east of Randy's Donuts on La Cienega
on Manchester). Their phone number is (31 0) 677-
Maintaining
Your
Instrument
HERE ARE SOME General
SUGGESTIONS THAT WILL HELP
YOU CLEAN AND MAINTAIN A
BAND INSTRUMENT
Be gentle with all instruments. Use
slight force when you are putting your
woodwind and brass instruments
together and taking them apart.
Keep instruments in their case when
not in use. Leaning a guitar against a
wall is not a good idea. IF the guitar
falls over the body and/or neck could
be damaged.
Never put steel strings on a classical
guitar – the neck may snap right off
and the strings could hit you in the
eye. You may, however, put nylon
strings on an acoustic guitar. Never
leave reeds on a mouthpiece when
not playing it. All kinds of mildew and
bacteria will collect.
Mark Little continued
for overseeing $90 million in funds earmarked for
facility renovation. In these efforts, Little furthers his
commitment to ensuring a quality education for all
students.
Little believes that Inglewood’s best years are
ahead. “Inglewood is on its way to being a bigger
destination than it has ever been in the past,” he
said. “With a renovated Forum, the city is an
entertainment hub capturing the majority of the
concerts in the Greater Los Angeles market; the
Crenshaw/LAX Light Rail is connecting Inglewood
and the airport to Greater Los Angeles in ways that
have only been a dream; and with the
developments on Hollywood Park, Daniel Freeman,
Market Street, Regent Square, and Century
Boulevard, the city is quickly becoming an
upmarket alternative for families to live, dine and
play,” Little said with enthusiasm. This synergy is a
perfect storm to sustain current businesses and to
attract national and international businesses into
our renaissance, he added. “If you’re not migrating
to Inglewood, you’re missing the train,” Little said
with a smile. “The Chamber is poised to welcome
businesses who want to be a part of our bright
future,” he added. With all of this going on in
Inglewood, it may become one of the best cities for
entertainment in Southern California.
Serena Williams Continued...
Do Not Hide Your Gifts
When you know you are great, there is no need to apologise or shy away from your own greatness. The world
deserves to see how great you are, the world wants to share your gifts. This is something I am still learning to be
honest but watching Serena reminded me that I have my own gifts that I need to start sharing and I am sure you
have them too. Very often it feels like bragging or showing off but it isn't showing off, it's showing the world how great
life can be if we all shared our gifts consistently and honorably.
Believe In Yourself!
This is one of the most challenging but the most essential factors in order to achieve success. You have to believe in
yourself. You have to visualise your success and truly believe that you are worthy of accomplishing your wildest
dreams. Both Serena and Venus Williams have stated this on more than one occasion and they are champions. If
you want to win you have to see yourself as a winner and work towards it.
Do The Work
There is no great success that can ever be achieved without hard work. It is very simple. You cannot expect to
achieve Serena's success if you do not put in the work. Whatever it is you are seeking to achieve in this world work
HARD to get there. It is worth it in the end. I'm still working on it but I believe it.
