Cheers!
“So take a break from all your worries”… and go “where
everyone knows your name.” These lines from the Cheers TV series
certainly describe our own Ararat Club. Many friendships began in our restaurant
and will last a lifetime.
Even friends from long past
will surface, ones we thought
we would never see again. So
take the opportunity to visit
on non-meeting nights and
enjoy yourselves with great
food and drink. Christmas
parties are now being booked
and fill up fast. Reserve your
room for a family party, company
holiday party or your
unit and club parties.
BJ Richardson, Director
of the Ararat Club, has
worked hard to increase
quality and improve service.
With the help of Tiffany and
the entire staff, the change
has been notable. BJ is also
focusing on cost reduction,
which has vastly improved
from previous years. Additional
revenue being generated
from outside events,
along with reduced costs, aid
in ensuring the future of
the Ararat Club – a place
where we all can meet,
relax and fraternize.
Top Circus
Ad Salesman
Noble Don Shaw stands out front of the
pack in the number of 75th Annual Ararat
Shrine Circus ads sold. Don went
door to door, visiting many businesses in the
Excelsior Springs and Liberty areas to help our
fraternity. His efforts ae helping us attain the
goals set to support the Ararat activities from
which we all benefit. Don says this was his first
venture selling circus ads. He was surprised and
pleased with the results, as well as the interest
in the internet advertising portion of the program.
He claims he is not a salesman, but with
his success I think we can give him the title Super
Circus Ad Salesman for the month. Don has been a member of Ararat since 1988. He
is a dedicated Provost member working for Ararat on Wednesdays. Thanks Don!
One Moment
of Your Time
Please!
By KEVIN SLEYSTER
Have you Purchased
YOUR Calendar Yet???
Hello Nobles, Ladies and Friends,
September was a busy month for Ararat and I appreciate all the support and
participation for the activities and events during September. Thank you for
a very successful and fun CSSA this year. The weather was beautiful and the
parade was amazing. The competition was fierce, but we had many units come out
on top which made Ararat proud. Congratulations to all that participated in the
competitions.
Thank you also for a great Ararat Family Picnic on September 12 at Blue Springs
Lake. The weather was beautiful; food plentiful and there was much fun for all that
attended. The Potentate’s Golf Tournament was held at Fred Arbanas Golf Course
and the Patrol did a great job organizing and hosting the tournament. One of our
biggest fundraisers, the Fall Swap Meet, was also held in September and from what
we can tell of the writing of this article it was successful and should help our General
Fund account.
October is shaking up to also be a very busy month. Look forward and plan to
participate or attend the Chili Cook-Off on October 9th. This event always brings
the best chili around and generates fun for all that attend.
We are looking forward to the Fall Ceremonial on October 15th and 16th and
hope that each of you plan to support our new Nobles and be a part of the class
which will honor Dave Bushakra, our very own High Priest and Prophet. I am very
proud to have Dave as the 2010 Fall Ceremonial Class Honoree as he has provided
Ararat with many years of dedicated and relentless support. Dave is an excellent role
model for all Nobles and will be a perfect honoree for our new Nobles. Please plan
to attend the Ceremonial and show your support for not only a great Noble, but a
wonderful friend as well. Good luck Dave with your treatments and battle ahead –
we are all behind you and wishing you the best.
The Temple building operation hours will change and beginning October 14th
the building will not open for business until Noon. This is necessary to conserve
Temple expenses.
Dianna and I appreciate the continued support that all of you have provided for
the Ararat Shrine and know that it will continue for years to come. Ararat is a great
place to have fun and make friends all the while to support and help the children in
need.
Hospital Van Drivers
If you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital
Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those
men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the
most rewarding activities you will ever experience.
We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you
to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving
record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this
manner.
September Temple Meeting Notes
By Steve Dowdy
Photos by Ed Stowell
Illustrious Sir Kevin Sleyster called
the September, 2010, meeting to order
at 7:35 PM in the Frank S. Land
Ballroom. Our Temple was under a
double and trusty guard, and there
were none present save members of
our order.
Chaplain Loyd Gentry gave the
Invocation and remembered our Nobles
who had been visited by the Black
Camel.
The Legion of Honor presented
the colors and the Chanters led the
singing of the National Anthem.
In accordance with long standing
tradition, Noble Possum Belly moved
to dispense with the reading of the minutes
of the last meeting, and the motion
was passed.
Oriental Guide Wayne Spencer
prepared the altar, and eight Candidates
were accepted for initiation into the fraternity.
Three restorations, 2 demits,
and five remissions were also accepted.
Treasurer Dan Smothers reported
that yearly receipts have exceeded disbursements,
and we still have money.
The report was approved.
The Director’s Staff made a donation
to the Distressed Nobles Fund, and
challenged the other Units to match
their donation. The Oriental Band accepted
the challenge and made a similar
donation.
No visitors were present.
Chief Rabban B.J. Richardson told
us that in August of 2009, the Restaurant
lost $5,000, and in August, 2010,
we made $500. Not lot of money, but
we’re getting better!
Chief Rabban B. J. also reported on
the status of collections and donations
to the Circus fund and told us that one
Noble accepted the challenge to go sell
ads, and in1-1/2 weeks sold 19 ads. B.
J. said he appreciates the efforts of the
Nobles who are out there collecting
donations, and singled out Noble Roy
Barnett who has now collected over
$13,000.
First Ceremonial Master Maurice
Camerlynck said “thanks” for a great
CSSA.
Our next Ceremonial will be October
16. All candidates’ names must be
read in a stated meeting before the Ceremonial.
We need more candidates. We
will have a “Show and Tell” on Friday
evening, starting at 7:00 PM. Ladies
will be welcome at Show & Tell. Registration
for the Ceremonial will begin at
11:00 AM on October 16.
Noble Buck Johnson reported that
the Bingo Games had provided $42,000
for the Temple General Fund and the
players had donated $5,460 for the year.
Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell said
that our Telemedicine operation is seeing
patients from everywhere! Ararat
has been selected by Imperial to take
part in a conference on internet usage.
Our internet access system is being upgraded
to be bigger, better, faster, and
cheaper. Our more traditional efforts
are also working hard, transporting 46
patients in 16 trips in the van.
Membership Chairman Rod Mc-
Grath gave another great pep talk. Remember
that if you sponsor two new
Nobles, or reinstatements, your temple
dues will be paid for 2011.
Ararat had the largest contingent of
all Temples at CSSA in Oklahoma City.
Under “Good of the Order,” Assistant
Rabban Richard Floyd spoke for
High Priest & Prophet Dave Bushakra,
and asked for a vote to enter into a
contract for CSSA 2013. A motion was
made and passed.
The Benediction was given by
Chaplain Loyd Gentry, and the meeting
was adjourned at 8:46pm.
“This is better than a garage
sale,” says Noble John Kennedy,
as he browses through the rack of
clothes before the temple meeting.
Nobles Gary Blankenship “Possum Belly”
(center) and Director Jerry McClary, present
Potentate Kevin with a donation to the Distressed
Nobles Fund, from the members of
the Director’s Staff.
Potentate Kevin accepts a donation
from Rajah Bill Spotts, Oriental
Band.
Potentate Kevin thanks Bingo Chairman,
Noble Buck Johnson, for the
donation to the General Fund and
donations from the Bingo players.
ShrineSavers introduces a new Cell
Phone Program. You asked for it
and we delivered.
Enjoy unlimited Talk, Text, and Web
No Contracts! No Credit Checks!
No Deposits! No Hassles!
“Hey Ill. Sir, this jacket looks
like it is your size,” says Treasurer
Dan Smothers, to Past
Potentate Don Price.
Membership Chairman,
Rodney McGrath, displays
new Membership
Material.
The collection barrel for
the “Socks in September”
Program was overflowing,
donations of our Nobles
Membership Matters
By Rod McGrath
I
love this time of year when I get to
congratulate all the units, clubs and
members who made their annual trek
to CSSA. I’ve heard nothing but exciting
stories of fun competition, new
bonds of friendship and fellowship
established and what an
incredible time everyone had.
If you’ve never experienced a
weekend of CSSA or Imperial,
it’s an adventure all by itself.
There are Shriners and
their ladies everywhere. More
cars, bikes, go-karts, fancy uniforms
and every conceivable toy imaginable!
People are having fun and sharing
laughs everywhere. It really is fun to be
a Shriner and it goes without saying, that
this is one of the “benefits” of a year of
hard work. Thank you to all who made it
possible and mostly to Ill. Sir Kevin and
Lady Dianna.
The year is not over by any stretch
of the imagination. We have
just begun the home stretch!
We just completed the Fall
Swap Meet and are focused
in on the Circus! All Nobles
should plan to help with
the Circus if possible. You
may contact Chief Rabban
BJ Richardson at 816-419-
8266 and he will direct you
to where your labors can best be welcomed.
I recommend all Nobles try to
work the Circus in some capacity. You
can contribute somewhere no matter
your age or mobility. The best part about
working any of the fundraisers is that you
might get paired to work with someone
you haven’t really met yet, and you will
have a new friend and brother
before it’s over!
We have a Ceremonial
coming the 15 th and 16 th of
this month!!! All petitions
will need to be in to the office
BEFORE the October
13 th Shrine Center Meeting.
This will be a 2 day event and
the ladies are welcome both days. The
“Show & Tell” will be Friday evening
and you will not want to miss it! Bring
your candidates and their ladies and you
will not be disappointed. All Nobles from
the Spring Class are expected to be there
both days. This is a great time, let’s make
it special for the Fall Class.
Remember, if you top line sign 2
nobles this year or restore 2 nobles this
year, your 2011 Ararat
dues will be paid! Yoo
Hoo! It does not cost to
be a Shriner, just do the
right thing, 1 in 3! Let’s
grow together, let’s play
together and let’s enjoy
all there is to being
a Shriner in one of the
most respected Shrine Centers in the
world.
Best Regards,
*DISTRESSED NOBLE’S FUND!*
***** I have a 5 star alert! ***** Nobles, Units and Clubs, may I have your attention? Your Membership
team, along with the Divan, Ambassadors and the front office has an opportunity for you to win a life time
endowment to Ararat Shrine. That means NO MORE DUES to Ararat for you! This is a $2700 value. You can
receive an opportunity to win this for just $20.
You may purchase as many as you wish and you
can purchase them for others. They make great
Christmas gifts and awards for jobs well done
within the club or unit. The best part about supporting
this cause is the proceeds go toward the
“Distressed Noble’s Fund” Brothers and Ladies I
can’t tell you how much we need help in this area. As our members get older and some fall on tougher economic
times, we have depleted this fund. It hurts me to know that some of our Brothers, who have put in many years
of hard work and labor towards the fraternity, may lose their membership which has meant so much to them .
Please support this program. If a unit or club wants to make a donation towards the Distressed Nobles Fund, do
so through this program and we will give you 1 ticket per $20 donated and you may give the chances away to your
members. Contact me personally for any questions you may have. Ladies if you want to purchase a ticket for your
Shriner as a Christmas/Birthday gift or stocking stuffer please contact me and I will make sure he doesn’t know
about it! If you already have a life endowment, and you win, you may transfer this to another Noble. Please contact
Mini Model T’s
By Steve Hargrave
It’s hard to believe that 10 months have already gone by this year. There are just a
couple of parades left in the parade schedule. I hope that the turn out for the next
parade is as good as the one for the American Royal. The Smithville parade is on
October 9th. This is also the same day as the Elders are performing at Winnetonka
High School. It is going to be a busy day for the some of the Mini T’s.
We were very happy to have Hank Sprague back out of the hospital. We were all
worried about one of our veteran members. He has been with the Mini T’s for some
time now and there is no one to replace him because he is one of a kind.
There are several Mini Model T’s available for new members that would like to
ride in the parades and have the company of family oriented Shriners. If any of the
new members to the temple or any of the not so new members would like to visit with
the T’s, give our Director, Jared Hargrave, or our President, Jamie Blackburn a call.
They can arrange a greet and meet at one our stated meetings and give you and your
lady a chance to visit with all of us.
Don’t forget that the Circus is next month. This is the time that all of Ararat,
especially the Mini Model T’s stand tall. I hope to see all of the members there for
this annual event. All of us like to visit while we are helping to provide a fun time for
all of the guests seeing the Circus.
Nobody Told Me!
By STEVE DOWDY
I
recently introduced a friend to the mysteries of Masonry. It’s been a really
long time since I became an Entered Apprentice, and a pretty long time since
I helped anyone else become an Entered Apprentice.
In my life, I have helped about 6 or 8 men become EA’s, but I don’t remember
much about it. Some of them joined a lodge in some faraway city and
I couldn’t go there to watch or participate. Some were initiated when I was in
some other city. I guess I just ignored a couple of them as they went through the
degrees.
Regardless, I helped this young man; he’s about 50 year’s old, get on the
road to Master Mason. Wow! He’s so excited and enthusiastic that it makes me
Remember those words. It is “our fraternity” and we should
support it. We will receive more support than we will give.
feel like some kind of fool for not being more excited than I have been. He talks
about Masonry with so much awe and amazement, and he just can’t wait to move
up to Fellow Craft. He’s going to do that in about one week, and I presume he
will be raised to Master Mason in another two weeks.
He even went to Barnes & Noble and bought a book on Masonry, which he
is reading voraciously. It’s called “Freemasonry for Dummies”, but it seems to
be respectful and accurate. It’s increased his knowledge of the craft, and I think
I’ll go buy my own copy. I hate the title, but maybe I can swallow my pride and
read it any way.
This guy is so enthused that he’s already looking for other new members.
He claims he doesn’t know anybody that wants to join today, but surely he knows
somebody who will join once he hears about it. I’m quite convinced that he will
find several men who will be interested.
I can’t help but wonder how many of us were similarly excited about becoming
a Master Mason? How many of us followed through and actually found
someone who became a Master Mason? Why haven’t we found someone who
wants to become a Master Mason?
This man’s father was present for his First Degree. He admitted that he
hadn’t been to lodge for some time; he’s been involved with the Shrine. He’s a lot
like me. Perhaps we will both find time to visit our own Blue Lodge now. There’s
simply too much inspiration in the Blue Lodge for us to ignore it; funny how we
couldn’t see it without the
help of a new member of our
fraternity. Remember those
words. It is “our fraternity”
and we should support it. We
will receive more support than we will give.
Now, we can think back to the days when we joined the Shrine. We probably
weren’t sure what we were getting into, but we had an idea that it was something
good. Then we learned a lot about the purposes of the Shrine, and we became
enthused. Maybe we’re still enthused, but not enough to go out and spread the
word. We’re not excited enough to want to share our fun.
I’ve heard Nobles complain that they don’t know any young men. Well, my
friend, the Entered Apprentice, is not terribly young, except in his knowledge of,
and experience in, Freemasonry. Many of us know men who are similarly young
in Shrinedom. Wouldn’t it be a great experience if you could share that thrill and
excitement with a new Noble?
Food
& Wine
By STEVE DOWDY
The point of wine is to give pleasure.
And, wine is easy to enjoy.
The business of tasting wine
should not be intimidating, but fun.
The following steps take just a little
time, yet they give you the benefit of
truly appreciating and understanding
the nuances of each variety. Besides
that, following these steps will make
you look like you really know your way around the finer things of life.
First, take the glass by its stem, lift it off the table. It should have only a little
wine in it. Tip it away from you, preferably against a white background. The white
allows you to see the different shades of color, particularly at the rim where the age
of a wine tends to show. Now, you should smile a bit, as though you understand
what you see. Red wines range from deep purple to pale tawny; white wines go
from pale greenish-yellow to deep gold. As a rule, red wines lose color with age;
whites deepen in color with age. Usually. The browner a wine, the older it is.
Next, swirl the wine around in the glass. Try not to swirl it out of the glass.
Wine’s flavor molecules are given off only on the surface of the liquid. By swirling,
you maximize the wine’s surface area and release more of the bouquet. As you
swirl, lift the glass to your nose.
Smelling is a very important part of the tasting process. Think about how
smell affects your enjoyment of food. You should smell the wine three times, swirling
each time to release the bouquet. Notice if the wine is clean and attractive, the
intensity of the smell, and what the aromas bring to mind.
Negative smells, or “off” smells may be:
Vinegar: Too much acetic acid in the wine.
Sherry: Too much oxygen in the wine.
Cork: The wine has absorbed the taste of a defective cork, making it musty
or moldy in flavor.
Sulfur: Too much sulfur dioxide is present in the wine.
Now, take a sip of wine and try to be sure that all of the tongue is exposed to
the liquid. Hold the wine in your mouth for 3 or 4 seconds before swallowing; notice
how sweet or sour, bitter, astringent, or alcoholic the wine is. Gauge the body
of the wine. Think skim milk, whole milk, heavy cream. Also, how does the wine
feel in your mouth? The term “mouth feel” is used for the sensations experienced.
Now is the time to assess the wine as a whole. Do I like this wine? Why or
why not? Were all of the elements in balance or did one of them seem obtrusive.
In young reds, tannin often dominates while young whites are often very acid. In
older wine, this lack of balance would be a fault. Is the wine light, medium, or full
bodied? Finally, what kinds of food would work well with this wine?
Liberty Shrine Club
By Joe Snopek, Scribe
By the looks of the leaves turning colors, the crisp morning and evening
air and the shorter days it must mean one thing and one thing only –
IT’S TIME FOR THE CIRCUS KICK-OFF AT CAROLYN’S PUM-
KIN PATCH!. For the past 4 years the Liberty Shrine Club, along with the
Oriental Band, Clowns, Drum and Bugle and the Banjo Band, have spent two
Saturday mornings promoting the Circus at Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch, located
just off 291 & 210 Highways. Noble “Buddy” Raasch and Lady Carolyn have
graciously had us, along with the Ararat Nobility, at their farm to tell one and
all about the Circus. We give away trinkets to the kids and spin our famous
“Wheel of Fortune” to win exciting prizes and Circus tickets. This year we are
going to return on Saturday, October 23rd and Saturday, October 30th from
9:00 am till 1:00 pm. We would like to see as many Nobles and their families
come out and join us. Wear your Fez or appropriate Unit or Club jackets and
caps, and you will get in free to help us out and check out the venue at the
Pumpkin Patch. If you need any more information feel free to call me at 816-
517-5461.
Our One and Only, President Norm Hughes served us up with another
great meeting in September. The menu included ham and beans, fried taters,
cornbread and was highlighted with an open beverage bar to show the club’s
appreciation for everyone’s hard work throughout the year. The guest speaker
was the one and only, Past Rajah from the Oriental Band, Noble Dick Hanner.
Noble Dick is a retired weatherman who worked for the FAA, and he presented
a fine Program on the reasons why the forecasters are so accurate! The money
presented to him showed the gratitude and appreciation we have for these fine
forecasters of our weather. Are you picking up any of my tongue in cheek yet?
All kidding aside we enjoyed his Program and thank him for joining us for the
evening.
As we look forward to October our speaker will be the one and only Circus
Chairman who will go over all of the fun activities, exciting job opportunities
and delicious meals that will be served at the 2010 Ararat Circus. We are the
longest running venue at Municipal Auditorium with 2010 making our 75th
year of presenting the Shrine Circus, and are looking forward to this years’
event and the 5 exciting days we will be spending in downtown Kansas City.
The raffle will be for dinner at Houlihans Restaurant so plan on coming
out to the Claycomo VFW on October 21st and enjoy some fine food and conversation
with the very active and growing Liberty Shrine Club! Remember,
new Nobles and their Ladies attending for the first time get their dinner on us
and nearly all of them have joined for only $10.00 a year in dues.
Until next month stay healthy and God Bless!
Nobles and six Ladies, along with our
Ambassador Bud Higginbotham and
his Lady Carol were present. A lot
of GOOD fellowship was shared and
even some business was conducted!
Lloyd and Barb Newman represented
the club at CSSA. Lloyd said
the Hospitality Room was GREAT!!!
They had a good time. It will be in
Overland Park, Kansas next year, so
maybe we can have full participation.
Henry McDaniels’ wife Christine
fell and broke her leg very badly,
and has plates and screws to prove it.
Hope you are progressing nicely with
a walking cast by now.
Lloyd and Henry provided transportation
at an Art Show in the Englewood/Independence
area, and
those golf carts and drivers earned a
$125 donation that was donated to the
General Fund at Ararat. Thank you
two for all the work and time you have
spent!!!
Well, the SWAP Meet will be
over by the time this paper goes to
press. Hopefully lots of vendors, customers
and volunteers participated
and it was a HUGE success.
Mark your calendar now for December
12, 2010, the date for our
Annual Christmas Party. Invitations
will be mailed out around November
1st. Be sure to save that day for another
fun filled party where we can
relax and enjoy each other’s company
(maybe steal someone’s Christmas
present – the game we play!!!)
For fear that a list of hurt or sick
members will leave someone out
please check on each other and be
sure to let us (Kathy or Ray) know
so we can send cards. Thanks in advance.
Hope Pam Ireland (8-9) had a
fun surprised Birthday Party. Illness
kept us at home but sure those that
went had FUN.
Now to catch up on Birthdays
for August, September and October
No relation to Moe, Larry and Curley, the above trio
packed a lot of fun into our 2010 Golf Season. No. 1
Driver Rocky Weaver bent over backwards to give us
a great playing schedule and help with Ararat’s vital fundraisers.
No. 2 Driver Larry Jobe was the go-to-guy whenever something
was needed, and Secretary/Treasurer Herb Gronemeyer
was, for the tenth year, the guy who kept us solvent while meeting
our obligations.
These leaders thank us for a great 2010 Golf Season..and
the membership owes them a big THANKS FOR ALL THE
WORK THEY HAVE DONE!
Please note that our final day of golf on Thursday, October
7 th has been changed to Shamrock Hills with start time at 9:00
am. There will be a big FREE Barbeque Lunch thanks to Noble
Roy Orth who will be firing up the grill. Yes, there is such a
thing as a FREE LUNCH. Just come to Shamrock Hills on October 7 th .
We remind you to make reservations for the Fall Dinner Meeting, which is being held on Monday
night, October 11, in Rooms A&B. “Election of officers for 2011 will be held and a good time is planned
for all Sandblaster Nobles and their Ladies,” says Rocky. Herb reminds us “We must have the dinner reservations
Motor Corps
Above: Competition Inspection.
Left, The Don Father explains
to hotel management why
Stanley and his Harley will be
going thru the lobby.
Below, Greg Kennedy and
Stanley Harrington do the obstacle
course.
Our Harley wheels rolled into Oklahoma City for CSSA in September. Ill. Sir
Kevin, Lady Dianna, Chief Aide Tom Burke and Lady Jackie worked hard in
getting us a great hotel and great hospitality room.
Thanks!
Not to mention names, but our President Doc Gay
found out why you don’t ride too close behind a cattle
truck! And to think he is from Oklahoma, one would think
he would have already known that. This “close encounter”
experience has made for some good ribbing and in Doc’s gentle manner muttered something
about paybacks! We are watching our backs.
Ararat Motor Corps brought home a first place trophy for drill competition. Our
wonderful Ladies and the “Don Father” past director Don Hendrickson lined us up
and checked us over for inspection. Our support team is the best! Greg Kennedy and
Stan Harrington smoked through the obstacle course on a 900 pound full dress Harley
to take second place team in obstacle course. When we compete against any and all size
two wheels on obstacle to take second speaks to the skill level of our riders. We enjoyed
the parade in Yukon, Oklahoma and comparing riding stories with one of their finest
Motor Police Officers.
Our team and ladies enjoyed time in Oklahoma City enjoying the great restaurants
and great friendship with all. After some talking, our “Don Father” was able to convince
the hotel manager that is was “ok” to let a Shrine Harley thru the hotel lobby; however
it did not quite fit in the elevator. Now tell us we don’t have fun!
We are lucky enough to have another great month at Worth Harley Davidson
cooking burgers and hot dogs while still making it to parades and Ararat events. Circus
collections at this event have been great and we do appreciate the Worth customers that
contribute to the 75th Annual Ararat Shrine Circus.
The 140th Shrine Edition Harley Davidson Ultra Classics are available to order
from the great guys at Worth Harley. Go talk to them and join us on the drill and parade
field! We also welcome those wishing to become social members and join our fun.
Lafayette County Shrine Club
By Ron Elling, Scribe
The Lafayette County Shrine Club met September 9th at The Red Shanty in Higginsville.
There were 16 Lafayette County Shriners and Ladies present for the
meal. President Delmar Dothage welcomed Ambassador Curt Karnes and his
Lady, Susan; and Liaison Officer Clarence Kirby and his
Lady, Joanie.
President Dothage presided at the meeting. W.N.
Gray, Jr. read the minutes from the last meeting. The
October bus trip to the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis has
been cancelled due to other commitments. The Lafayette
County Shrine Club has been asked to help with the Hospitality
Room at the Circus. More details will be obtained
and discussed at the next meeting. President Dothage also
discussed the Distressed Nobles Fund being depleted. It
was voted to donate $250 to the fund. All Lafayette County
Shrine Club members were encouraged to purchase the
Circus tickets for use by children. Ambassador Karnes discussed
upcoming events which included various parades,
CSSA, the Potentate’s Golf Tournament, an upcoming
Ceremonial to be held October 16 and the Circus to be
held in November. He also shared that there have been
four Telemedicine patients with five more scheduled, plus
many children being sent to the various Shriners Hospitals.
Liaison Officer Kirby announced the Masonic Home
presentation will be made at the October Divan meeting.
He also discussed membership being down and plans are in the works to help with this
situation. Linda and Tim Rechterman and Bernie Miller were thanked for helping with
the Luau at Ararat Temple. He also shared information about the business advertisements
on-line being available.
The October meeting will be a joint meeting with the Knights of Columbus. More
details to be announced later.
with three officers and seven members present. We were
again honored to have our Liaison Officer, 2nd Ceremonial
Master Clarence Kirby with us.
Our Annual Picnic was held
at Lake Jacomo on Sunday, August
15 th , with thirty-one members, ladies
and guests in attendance. We
thank our Liaison Officer Clarence
Kirby and Lady Joanie for furnishing
the cooking grill and grilling the
hamburgers and hot dogs. We were honored to have several
guests with us including the Richard Price Family,
son of Past Potentate Don and Lady Opal Price; also,
Keith and Mary Hatfield from upstate New York, who
were guests of Noble Jim and Lady Judy McAfoose.
Keith is a 40 year member of Scipio Center Masonic
Lodge. Assistant Rabban Richard Floyd and Lady Linda
also joined us.
Our only parade during the month of August was in
Lexington, Missouri on Saturday, August 21 st , where we
had 14 cars parading. We were glad to have two of our
Ladies, Eunice Doubledee and Judy McAfoose with us.
It was a warm day and some of us enjoyed the Beer Garden
following the parade.
On Thursday, September 2 nd , nine members, Ladies
and guests departed for CSSA in Oklahoma City. Our
Ole Car Unit won a first place trophy in the Antique
Class. Pictured below are Director, Noble Gary Seger;
President, Noble Paul Brewer; and our “high point
member”, Noble Mike Aulgur with the trophy.
A special thanks goes to Noble Mike Aulgur whose
74 Chevy Camaro was judged a 99
point vehicle. We thank our Director,
Noble Gary Seger and Lady
Ladonna for all the hard work in
making this trip enjoyable. We also
thank our guests Noble Jerry Hess
and Lady Jan for all their support
during this fun weekend.
Our get well list includes our President, Noble Paul
Brewer who had additional tests on his back. Also, our
Past President, Noble Jerry Alumbaugh had more knee
surgery in late August and Past Director, Noble Don
Barham and Noble Marty Hopkins have been confined
at their homes with health issues. We wish them all improved
health.
The time is drawing close for Circus ticket sales and
Mom and Dad pin sales.
Our next dinner social will be on Tuesday, October
12 th at the Rib Crib in Independence, Missouri. Be there
at 6:00 pm.
Blue Springs
Shrine Club
By Fred “Fingers 88” Harle P.P.
Welcome to the friendliest Shrine Club within
Ararat Shrine; a place where a Noble and his
Lady can feel completely at ease, because you
are with other Nobles and Ladies who believe in having
fun and are dedicated to the same thing.
Our President, Noble Bill Fickle, is really a go-getter
who is working hard to see to it that our club has all
the tools to make our club the type you will enjoy being a
part of. So, why not give us a try and come on out to our
next meeting on the 4th Monday night of each month.
We meet in the beautiful city of Blue Springs, which is
15 minutes from everywhere in the greater KC area. Our
meetings are held in the American Legion Building located
on 7 Hwy, a couple blocks north of 40 Hwy. It is a
large, two story red brick building and you can’t miss it.
Should you want more information just look in your Ararat
Calendar Book under Shrine Clubs and our officers
are listed with their phone numbers, under Blue Springs.
Give us a ring and we’ll be glad to hear from you.
Isn’t it great to meet friends when you least expect
it? Jennie and I were at the Santa-Cali-Gon Festivities
in Independence, MO, just sitting on Main Street by the
Fire Station, when someone covered my eyes from behind,
and guess who? It was our BSSC Treasurer, Noble
Jeff Quibell with his pretty Lady Wanda, and then we
ran into them again in one of the craft tents. Quite a
coincidence when you consider the thousands of people
who were there. In Shrine meeting in September I ran
into Noble Jeff and pretty Lady Wanda along with Noble
James Gargotta and pretty Lady Gail
I must tell you about our BSSC Treasurer, Noble
Jeff Quibell and Lady Wanda. They are the proud owners
of a yellow, Gold Wing Motorcycle, and they recently
rode their cycle to South Dakota. And that not being
enough, as I put together this news item they are riding
their Gold Wing up into Michigan. We wish them a safe
trip.
Lady Jennie and I are the proud possessors of a Pekingese
dog, a puppy who thinks she owns us. On a particular
day a couple weeks ago I took Tasha, our dog’s
name, to the Puppy Boutique for grooming, and who
should I run into but Noble Bob Hunsperger. He was
there to pick up his and Roberta’s pooch that was there
also to get beautiful. Boy, don’t we pamper our pets.
Well now, it’s really great to get into the fall season
and start back into our Shrine and Masonic meetings. It
is nice to once again be with our friends and brag about
what we did over the summer months. Why don’t you
come and be with us, you might have something you
want to share with the rest of us. Think about it! You
don’t know what you are missing unless you give us a try.
And also you members of our BSSC we hope to see you
at our next meeting.
Whoopee! I think I pretty much covered the ball
park for this time, so be good to one another and we look
forward to seeing you.
Provost Makes the
Mark at CSSA
By Ben Allen
Nobles and Brethren, great weather, three great venues, and Guns and
Ammo; it just doesn’t get any better than this. OK, there was that nasty
little storm on Thursday night, but all the days’ events were over.
Thursday’s events, the Sporting Clays and the Balloon Match were held at
Quail Ridge Hunting and Sporting Clays. The guys running this place were very
hospitable. They even built a pistol range just for our Balloon Match. Great
Place
Friday’s Trap event was held at the Oklahoma Trap Association Shooting
Park. Thanks go out to these guys. Everything ran well and they stayed around
as long as it took to get all the scoring completed and the shoot off was done. A
Big thanks to OTA.
The Pistol events for the day were held just around the corner from OTA,
at the Canadian Valley Range. They basically gave us the run of about half the
range. Rusty Warren was the Range Master and kept everything running smooth.
This was another fine facility.
I am sure that everyone will say they wish they had shot better, (Well -
Maybe just me), but I know they will all say. WE HAD A GREAT TIME!!
Provost News
By Bill Huffman, Scribe
Greetings!! Fall is getting closer and
some cooler temperatures will be
welcome.
We now have a second defibrillator, so
while we are away at parades and all other functions the Provost is protected, as well
as everyone in the temple. The new one is the same model as the one we already have.
Harvey Mansfield is not doing well as of this writing. Bob Wrede had surgery
and has been back to the temple. Also, Larry Riggs has spent some time with his
parents while his Dad was in the hospital, and his Mother needed help because of a
knee problem. God Bless.
Bill James and Dave Bennefeld have been promoted to Sergeant. Congratulations
to both of you and thank you for your dedicated service. Randy Berry has been
promoted to Major, and also Night Commander. Commendations are in order to all
of you.
I would like to point out one Noble at this time for his service to his life time
partner. Leonard Huff has always had my respect as a friend, but his standing by
Lady Sue during her time of need is impressive. All of us would do the same, given
the circumstances. During a recent conversation, Leonard mentioned how much his
cooking had improved. I’ll pass on that one. Until next time, God Bless.
Oriental Band
By Dave Wilbanks, Scribe
Well here we are in the month of October, just one month to go until
elections for next year’s officers. I guess the question is; are we going to
have any officers at all??? Reason being, nobody wants to be an officer
anymore. It used to be you had to wait to be able to even run for office. But then
again we had a lot more members, and they were a group of younger nobles full of
life and really liked to party, and were able to as well. However, with all things, as
time goes on so do we. Even in the good times as well as the not so good times we
all have to say “Till we meet again in the great temple in the sky.” I know that all of
the Noble Brothers I met back in 1987 and who welcomed me as a fellow brother
in 1999, some are still here while others have moved on to the temple in the sky.
So maybe instead of getting upset because of the lack of members not showing up,
why not try to remember the ones that got it all started and see what they did to
get and keep the members that made the O.B. one of the best units in the temple.
OK moving on. C.S.S.A. I’m here to tell you that the O.B. had a lot of fun, even
for being a small group. It was pointed out to me that Past Potentate Ben Kenney
jumped in to give the O.B. a hand on the drum and gave us a new drum beat. Hey,
there is nothing wrong with a Scottish beat for an Oriental song. Thanks Benny,
for being a part of the O.B. and for giving us something to remember. And in true
fashion, Noble Steve Dowdy may have lost his mouth piece but he still kept going
and didn’t skip a beat. (Way to go, Steve!) We all made it back safe and that’s what
is important.
We had the O.B. picnic out at my place in Belton on Saturday, September 11.
It was a very nice day for a picnic. As one by one the cars pulled up the drive it became
apparent to me that it was going to be a great time. And it was. We had about
30 people show up and everybody got treated to some really good food. The O.B.
paid for the meat and everybody else brought a dish. While Noble Clyde Alana did
the cooking on the grill everybody else talked and got caught up on what was going
on. I guess if I had to pick the best part of the day that made it perfect would have
to be when Noble Tommy Horrell and his Lady Eva pulled in the drive. But then
again it was good to have all the members of the O.B. together on such a perfect
day. Don’t forget our Annual Fall Dance is being held at the Shrine on October 22,
featuring Freddy and the Doo Wops, who play music from the Classic Rock Era.
Till Next Month. “Be Safe”
Saline County Shrine Club
By Dave Duffer, Scribe
August was a busy month for the Saline County Shrine Club. We participated
in the Lexington and State Fair Parades, worked the food stand at the State
Fair for the Sedalia Shrine Club, and held our quarterly meeting. The meeting
was well attended especially after word got out that the meal would be prepared
by Lady Denise Potter. This Lady can cook. Thank you, Denise.
Summer is officially over but Saline County Shrine Club has a busy schedule
right into fall. In September we have parades coming up in Higginsville, Concordia
and in Marshall for the State Corn Husking Competition. We will also be manning
the concession stand for the Corn Husking event.
We are pleased to welcome back into action Noble John Reeves who has been
sidelined for the last few weeks. Welcome back Noble John, we’ve missed you.
Houn Dawg Shrine Club
By Fred Higginbotham, Scribe
Greetings from “the burg” and the Houn Dawg Shrine Club. Twenty-six nobles,
ladies and guests returned from the summer hiatus to attend our September
dinner meeting. Guests included Liaison Steve Untrif and Lady Beverly,
and Ambassador Ken Sisemore and Lady Mary.
Highlights of the meeting included Liaison Officer, Steve Untrif, presenting
Crown of Honor Jewels to the eight nobles pictured below. Other items discussed at
the meeting, by David Key, included the following:
Our Circus collections are scheduled to begin October 9th for five Saturdays.
And, this year we are designated both doors. Hopefully, this will increase this year’s
donations.
Plans are in progress for the Festival of Champions (Music Bowl), scheduled
for October 30th, in Warrensburg, at Central Missouri University. For those of you
who can help, and have not been contacted by David Key, please call him at 660-441-
5346. He will be glad to hear from you.
A plea has been made to the Houn Dawg Mini-Cycles (for those who can) to ride
in the Warrensburg UCM Homecoming Parade scheduled for October 23rd.
Sickness & Wellness Report: We would like to see more of our “well” members
attending our monthly meetings. We do have a great time each month, even though
it may be just poking fun
at our president! We are
sorry to report we have
received word that some
of our members have
not had an easy time
this month: 1) Lady Katie
Pautz is recovering at
home from breast cancer
surgery. Preliminary test
reports are good. 2) Lady
Faye Kimbley was admitted
to Harmony Gardens Care Center in Warrensburg. Length of stay is unknown
at this time. 3) Following extensive back surgery and prolonged stay at Research
Medical Center, Lady Lyla Marshall is now at the Country Club Care Center in
Warrensburg. The surgery appears to have been successful but extensive therapy will
be required for the next three months. We’ll keep thinking “the good thoughts” for
these great ladies and hope to see them back soon.
Marilyn Cass won the 2 free dinner tickets to the October meeting.
The nobles receiving Crown of Honor Jewels included (in back) Fred Higginbotham,
Bill Ketcherside, Robert Cass, Marvin Cass and Les Stewart. David Key (seated
in front). Nobles Bill Marshall and Zack Murrell were not available for photo.
October 30, 2010
The Festival of Champions will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2010
on the campus of the University of Central Missouri, at Warrensburg,
Missouri. This is the 9th season, continuing the 25 year tradition
of excellence established by Music Bowl Missouri. The University of
Central Missouri, Meyer Music and Ararat Shrine host the competition that
includes 32 high school bands from across the Mid-West, with up to 7 additional
high schools participating in just the Drumline/Auxiliary competitions.
The average attendance has been 8,000 consisting of families of the
participants, area band enthusiasts and much of the local community. The
cost is $10.00 General Admission for all events. No charge for Indoor only.
Children 6 and under are FREE.
