Pote’s Notes!
By RICHARD FLOYD
Thanks to our Chief Rabban, Wayne Spencer, for a great Circus.
I would like to express my appreciation to all the Nobles and
Ladies who spent many hours collecting donations, selling adds,
novelties, program books, and helping with the set up and tear
down of the Circus. A Huge thanks to Joe Snopek and Scott Towler
for their many hours of working behind the scenes to make this
Circus successful. To all the units and clubs who provided food during the Circus, thanks.
The food was really great.
The holidays are upon us and I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
A big thanks to John and Sherrill Nelson, all the Aides and their Ladies and all the
Nobles and Ladies from the various units and clubs who helped decorate our Temple for
the holidays. We can be proud of how our home at Ararat looks.
Please come and share in Camel’s Milk at Ararat from 1:00 -3:00 pm on New Year’s
Eve. Start the New Year with fellow Nobles. For the new Nobles this is a drink of eggnog
or your favorite libation.
Linda and I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Hospital System Heroes
For the month of October the following Nobles have sponsored children into the
Shrine Hospitals. If your name has never appeared in this column, consider getting involved.
It will not only change your life, but will be a life changing experience for a child
and his family.
Hospital Van Drivers
If you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transportation
Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport
our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you
will ever experience.
We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your
State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact,
all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.
A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the
month of October!
It was a chance meeting at the St. Louis Shriners Hospital between Noble Cotton Boyer and David
Henke, whose child is a patient at the hospital that led to a Tractor Pull being held last year
in Salisbury, MO. Due to the success of this event it was decided to have another one this year
in September.
We would like to thank everyone involved for making the Tractor Pull happen, and for the
generous donation of $1,250.00 to the Hospital Transportation Fund.
“Strong Legs Run That Weak Legs May
Walk”
This year marks the 88th year the East-West Shrine Games has been more than just a football
game. Since 1925 it has been a showcase for the next generation of NFL greats and a priceless
benefit event for Shriners Hospitals for Children. The East-West Shrine Game is the
longest-running all-star college football game, combining great football with a great cause and
creating experiences for players that will last a lifetime.
The players and coaches tour a Shriners Hospital for Children location before the game.
Crafts, games, and other activities bring together college football players and children for a oncein-a-lifetime
experience.
This year the game will kick off at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and will be broadcast live
on the NFL Network.
Shriners Hospitals for Children
Pediatric Specialty Hospitals
My Dear Fellow Representatives,
In July of this year our Vice President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Peter
Armstrong, retired. The Joint Boards set out to decide if our past medical
direction was the right path to go in the future. In the interim, the Boards
formed a “Physician Executive Team” to assist our Medical Affairs Department
during the transition.
Dr. Kenneth Guidera, Chief of Staff of our Twin Cities Hospital, was
chosen as the Lead Doctor, on the new Shriners Hospitals “Physician Executive
Team”.
His fellow team members are Dr. Chip Iwinski, Chief of Staff of Lexington, Dr. Kit Song,
Chief of Staff of Los Angeles, and Dr. Richard Kagan, Chief of Staff of Cincinnati.
Doctor Iwinski’s area of responsibility is for the accuracies of our Medical Departments Information
Systems endeavors. Doctor Song’s area of responsibility is to assure Shriners Hospital’s
“Quality and Safety” methods, and Doctor Kagan’s area of responsibility is for our “Burns Hospitals”
issues.
The new directions this team has taken have been met with tremendous support from all of the
Shriners Hospital’s physicians. We congratulate the entire team on their progress and leadership.
At the just concluded Fall Board meeting of the Joint Boards of Shriners Hospitals, a decision
was made on a very key leadership role for the “Home Office in Tampa”.. that of the Chief Medical
Officer position.
The “Physician Executive Team” will continue to exist and report to this new position of
Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
The Boards are extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Kenneth J. Guidera, has been selected
for this position. Dr. Guidera has over 20 years of experience working in the Shriners Hospitals
for Children organization. After initially being a volunteer surgeon at our Tampa Hospital, he left
his private practice to join our healthcare system full time. He was soon promoted to Tampa’s Assistant
Chief of Staff and then in 2004, advanced to the position of the Chief of Staff of the Twin
Cities Hospital.
Dr. Guidera served in the US Army in Korea and has participated in medical missions in Haiti
immediately after that devastating earthquake, in Armenia, and missions
for the Red Cross.
His clinical interests are in the areas of spine and lower extremity
surgery. He is a member of several Medical Societies and involved with
numerous Research Projects. Ken is also a Shriner and an “Associate Member”
of five Midwestern Temples.
With Dr. Guidera as our Chief Medical Officer, we will continue moving
forward in reconstituting the Medical Affairs Department within the
Home Office and will continue to rebuild the functions of the staff based on
the new priorities and directions from our Joint Boards.
We all look forward to working with him in his new role and supporting
his vision for the future of our medical staff and our hospital system.
Dr. Kenneth Guidera
Please join the Joint Boards in welcoming our new “Chief Medical Officer”,
Yours in the Faith,
BY DAN SMOTHERS
Happy Holidays!!!
As we move into the final month of the year I would like to
say a great big “thank you” to all of the Nobles that worked at this
year’s Super Circus. As with all of the other events that you are involved
in throughout the year helping Ararat Shrine, the Circus is the one that is
always the most fun and receives the best recognition from the citizens
of the Greater Kansas City area that attend.
In my last article I said that John Nelson was a member of the Oriental Band. He is actually a
long time member of the Sand Buggies. Sorry John.
To all of the new members that have joined this year, December is always one of the most
special months on our calendar because of the parties and the socials that we have. The Children’s
Christmas Party is set for December 15th with an appearance by the big man in the red suit! Also,
don’t forget the famous Camel’s Milk on December 31st. This is the last day of the year to say
hello to all of the Nobility.
My wish is that you have a great Holiday Season, a great Christmas, a great Hanukah, and a
great New Year!
Fraternally,
Yours in the faith,
Bison Run 2012
Recently 31 Nobles and Ladies provided
escort, traffic control and staffed aide stations
during the Bison 50 relay race from
Topeka to Lawrence, Ks. Several of our newest
Nobles and Ladies were represented as well as
members of the Divan, Motor Corps, Directors
Staff, Oriental Band, Ole Cars, Provost, Cycles,
Corvette Club, and Ladies of the Shrine.
As a result of these efforts we were able to raise
$1775 for this year’s Circus.
Thanks to all that participated.
New Patient Referral Process
Approved at Imperial Session
Ararat Legion of Honor
FARRELL MORROW, P/C 2001/02 CSSA P/C 2006/07
It is with great pride as Ararat Legion of Honor’s Central States Commander 2006/07, and Lady
Mary to have made a trip to Arlington, VA with the International Legions of Honor Commander,
Jack A. Tuomey Jr. and his Lady Sarabeth, other LT. Commanders and their Ladies, guests and
Nobles all. This was my 5th trip.
Every year on or about the date of Veterans’ Day, the International Legions of Honor lays a
wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This year’s Ceremony was held on November 3rd.
Imperial Sir Alan W. Madsen, Oasis Shrine; International Commander Jack A. Tuomey, Moslah
Shrine; International Chief of Staff Don Gibson, Moslah Shrine; and guest was honored to lay the
Legion of Honor Wreath. We were also honored to watch the Changing of the Guard by the most
outstanding men of our Armed Forces. The perfection they have is unreal.
The Arlington National Cemetery is a remarkable and rewarding place to stand and to thank
all of our heroes for
giving their ultimate
for our freedom we so
love and enjoy. Every
day, thank a Veteran.
May God protect those
who are in harms way
now and in the future.
We are proud Veterans
to serve our country
and proud to serve our
Shrine Centers.
May GOD Bless
America.
Great news! It is now easier than ever to
refer a patient to Shriners Hospitals for
Children ® ! At the 138th Annual Session in
July 2012, the attending delegates approved
amendments to the Colorado Bylaws
509.2 and 509.3 which simplified the way
for patients to access Shriners Hospitals.
Patients/families no longer need to fill out
a two-page application form that must be
processed before being considered for
treatment. While this is a big change for
our system and YOU, we want to assure
you that our Shriners are more important
than ever in finding children that need our
help; as well as informing the public about
the noble mission of Shriners Hospitals for
Children. We need your participation now,
more than ever, to reach more patients. This
new process makes it easier for our patients
and will still allow for engagement with the
nobility. Travel and transportation support
should not change. Contact your Shrine
temple or hospital if you have questions.
This new intake process continues to
support your valuable referrals, without
the added step of completing a patient
application. Instead, simply provide patients/
families with the Shriners Hospitals for
Children patient referral card, which may
be obtained from your hospital or Shrine
temple. In addition, a new Patient Referral
Form will be forthcoming in the near future.
However, the referral card is preferred,
with the patient/family calling the hospital’s
referral intake line directly. Why? This is
the quickest and most convenient way for a
patient to get the care they need.
When did this start? In October 2012,
Shriners Hospitals simplified the process
for our new patients; allowing immediate
scheduling for an appointment if their clinical
needs meet the hospital’s scope of service.
To avoid any confusion to our patients or the
community, temple staff are asked to no
longer use the application form and remove
any reference to a patient application
process in temple materials or website.
Thank you for your continued hard work in
helping the children. Please contact your
local Shriners Hospitals facility if you have
any questions.
To learn more about our services, or to refer a
patient, visit shrinershospitalsforchildren.org
to locate a hospital near you. Or call 800-237-5055
in the U.S. or 800-361-7256 in Canada.
Nobody Told Me!
BY STEVE DOWDY
We, my bride and I, went to Warrensburg
and attended the Festival
of Champions. It’s old news now,
but it happened about one day after deadline
for the November paper, and that’s one of the
problems of a monthly column.
Nobles have tried to tell me, for about 25
years now, that I should go watch these high
school kids because they were really good. I
always whined that it was so far away, and it
took all day, and the weather would be bad,
and I would get home so late, and on and on.
You’ve heard all the excuses for not doing
whatever, and I used most of them.
But, this year, we decided that we should
go and take a few pictures for publicity. So,
we picked up our cameras and set out for the
University of Central Missouri.
Boyee, Howdy!!! (a Texas expression).
We had a great time! Those kids are great!
They played and performed like the whole
world was watching. They were more disciplined
than the US Marines. They took their
work seriously. There was no goofing off.
They started according to schedule, and they
finished according to schedule. They were
fantastic.
The entire organization treated us Shriners
like we all want to be treated everywhere
and all the time. And the Shriners did their
best to be Nobles of the mystic Shrine. Most
of us smiled most of the time, and virtually all
of us acted like it was a privilege to be there.
I really think that most of us had a great time.
And the Hospital Transportation Fund got
some money. I got to meet the sister of one of
our patients. I got to hear one young lady tell
me she thought it was “neat” that all of our
Divan members had matching suits. Now and
then, somebody would walk up and just say
“Thanks.” The whole day was a winner.
I suppose that the really important part
of Ararat’s participation was the opportunity
to show that corner of the world that Shriners
were willing to help others. We know
that we’re ready and willing to help just about
anywhere and any way that we can, but there’s
a lot of people that don’t see that side of our
fraternity. Maybe a few spectators at the Festival
of Champions saw our best side. Maybe
a couple of those kids on the field saw something
that they will remember.
I learned that we have an amazingly talented
and dedicated bunch of high school ladies
and gentlemen. The band that won the
big trophy as the best of the best, marched to
the end of the field where they stood at attention
for at least a half an hour until the trophy
presentation was complete.
This column can’t be complete without
a bit of praise for the judges. Judges were
everywhere. Some were up in the press box
about six stories above the field; a couple of
them were on the field walking amongst the
band members. They were all serious about
their job, too. If you’ve ever judged any kind
of competition with more than five competitors,
you can understand the difficulty of judging
thirty-one bands, each with at least a hundred
bandsmen.
And, finally, high praise is due to all those
teachers and band directors that really weren’t
evident during all this. Most of them stood
quietly a bit off the field, biting their nails and
maybe silently praying. Their dedication and
pride in their charges was more than evident.
Maybe the whole world isn’t going to hell
in a handbasket, after all.
In addition to the four tastes we discussed last month, wines can have other tastes and fragrances.
In many cases, the vessels in which wine is stored impart a flavor to the wine.
Wines can be stored in almost any kind of container before it is bottled. Stainless steel and
epoxy-lined concrete vats can be found in almost every winery on earth. They are hygienic and
long-lasting. They impart no flavor to the wine, and the wine will not change or develop while in
them. They are also relatively easy to keep clean.
Wooden barrels, usually oak, are different. They manage to be both liquid tight and porous,
allowing some exchange of gases through the wood. Some wine also evaporates through the pores
and some air gets in. The wine oxidizes, this enables the wine to develop and mature.
There is a great difference between new oak barrels and old oak barrels. New oak will impart
a flavor component to the wine, old barrels, five or more years old, will not add flavor to the wine.
Both old and new barrels will allow the passage of air, and that oxidation will give the wine an
impression of softness and roundness.
When people talk about “oaky” wines, they are talking about wine aged in new oak barrels.
The taste of new oak is unmistakable. You taste it and smell it, but it should be in balance with
the rest of the wine.
New oak barrels are expensive, and give the most flavors only in the first year. If the winemaker
wants a wine with a vanilla flavor, but doesn’t want the high price, he can submerge a bag
of oak chips in the fermenting vat, just like a tea bag in a cup. Or, he can insert planks of new oak
in the vats. These techniques work, and are quite suitable for cheaper wines. But for premium
wines, only the real, new oak, barrels will do.
Ararat Clowns
by Bill DeMent
Well, another Ararat Shrine Circus has come and gone, and a very successful circus it
was for your Ararat Clowns.
We had an excellent showing of our own clowns this year, with several “special
guest” clowns in attendance. Among those traveling far to help us make this a truly “Super
Circus” were “Dizzy” and “Silly Goose” from Kem Shrine in Grand Forks, North Dakota;
“Spazz”, “Grease Monkey”, and “Slim” from Abou Ben Adhem Shrine in Springfield, MO;
and “Bo” and “Snickers” from Moila Shrine in St. Joseph, MO. Many thanks to these fine
gentlemen for taking the time and traveling the miles to come and help us out. We look forward
to hopefully seeing all of them again next year.
Continuing what has become a tradition at the circus, we had several of our Divan Ladies
( Linda Floyd, Kay Baldi, Connie Pugh, and Dale Grimes) dress out with us at our Saturday
evening performance (pictured below left). Thank you, ladies for joining us, and we hope you
had a great time as “Clowns For A Day”, and we look forward to doing it again next year!
Another continuing tradition for us at the circus is having our Divan Liaison (this year
Chief Raban Wayne Spencer) dress out for a performance. Wayne, pictured below right, decided
he wanted to go “the extra mile” with us this year, and dressed out for not one, but three
performances! But Wayne wasn’t done there, he also decided that he would like to perform at
the circus, and was the “featured clown” in a skit designed especially for him at the Friday,
Saturday and Sunday evening shows. He did a great job, and assured me that he had a great
time doing it! On behalf of the Clown Unit, we wish to express our thanks and appreciation to
Wayne for a job very well done this year, and we look forward to working with Wayne again
next year as our Illustrious Sir!
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Clown Unit’s officers for
2013 - Charlie “Buck-E” Parker, Director; Don “KB” McNeil, President; Benny “Bengie”
Bigler, Vice-President; Will “Spanky” Self, Secretary; and thanks for the vote of confidence in
electing me as Treasurer.
Thanks to everyone in Ararat for your support of your Clown Unit this year, and always
remember, “We do it for the smiles!”
THE 2012
SHRINE Circus
WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!
10 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS DECEMBER 2012

Thank You!
BY JOE SNOPEK, CIRCUS CHAIRMAN
Twelve months of planning and anticipation for our annual Circus have come to another close.
As Wayne and I look back over those months we recollect the visits to the Ararat Clubs and
Units, the Temple Meetings with the monthly reports, the collection totals being posted on the
office window, the ticket requests from the numerous schools in our jurisdiction and the long list of
preparations, advertising campaigns and the inputs from all the Nobles on how to have a bigger and
better circus than those in the past. These events are not what Wayne and I will remember the most
about our 2012 circus though.
There is no better memory than reflecting on the Nobility, their Ladies and Families who put
their time, efforts and hearts into making the circus a success. What we will recall are the multitude
of Nobles that attended the circus to work in the many jobs that are needed to put this event on. The
smiling wide eyed faces of the Nobility, their Ladies and the Ladies Oriental Shrine who manned the
novelty stand religiously throughout the circus and not showing how tired they really were on Sunday
night. The ever bubbly demeanor of my buddy Noble Travis Hargrave asking me about Snow
Dude with a smile and warmth I will never forget. The hard working and ever obliging Director’s
Staff and their Ladies tolerating rowdy but friendly workers needing refreshment in the hospitality
room after a long performance. Noble Scott Towler trying to figure out just what sword was needed
for the Oriental Band booth and how twiddle dee and twiddle dum were going to get them delivered.
The memories of Noble Newman escorting tired workers to their novelty stands before each
performance with smiles on their faces and a joke on their tongue will always echo in our hearts.
How can one forget the Provost directing the traffic to get our patrons to the yellow coated Greeters
who scanned and welcomed them into the arena? Noble Mac McWilliams was always conscious of
a patron looking for their seat and would direct one of his ushers to their assistance in a heartbeat.
The food menus provided by the various Units and Clubs to provide nourishment to us all were
out of this world! From steak and potato to chili, hoagie sandwiches, meat ball subs, salad, soups
and of course donuts and coffee, most of our nobility went home a few pounds heavier on Sunday!
Thank you Iron Horse for all your hard work!
The excitement of the Clowns as they entered daily with their Ladies was expressed by their
proud step as they marched to their dressing rooms with costume and makeup in hand. Let’s not
forget the Noble Clowns who assisted from other Temples to make our circus one with such a huge
diversity of clowns. The smiles on the grumpiest clown costume could be seen for miles by the
children entering the arena looking for a picture with their favorite one. The shouts of the Mounted
Guard who generously donated the proceeds from their Annual Bass Tournament to make the circus
possible for over 6000 children on Friday was only muffled by Noble John McLaughlin’s Lady Fran
who orchestrated those kids attendance.
Noble Jimmy Jones relentless voice will always be remembered echoing through the seats as
strong on Sunday night as it was on Thursday evening. His introductions of our very own Noble
Jack Mote who flawlessly sang our National Anthem brought chills to one and all. Following his
rendition our Harem presented the colors and one could feel the proud persona of each and every
person in the auditorium as we honored our military, fire fighters, paramedics and police officers.
The memories get more sentimental when we think about Noble Doug Rothgeb, not in his horns
and tail, but in a somber moment when he whispered, “I sure miss my buddy Jimmie Runyan” to me
on Wednesday morning. To cumulate this sentiment I need to apologize for an earlier than normal
departure on Sunday night. As I looked into the empty hospitality room with only a few Nobles left
trying to rest their eyes I saw in my mind a table with a few Nobles, Davy Bushakra, Jimmie Runyan,
Tommy Horrell, Dave Gordon, Billy Parker, Pappy Nick, Arlene Kitson, Frank Ford and others who
met the Black Camel over the past 9 years waving and telling the entire Nobility of Ararat Shrine
what a GREAT JOB they did in 2012 and I knew that I could not say it any better. Seeing them along
with Lady Molly Bushakra with her family accepting the poster honoring Noble Dave Bushakra on
Friday night was what we are all about, a Fraternity of Brother Masons who work together for whatever
Divan Meeting Notes
BY STEVE DOWDY
The November, 2012, Divan Meeting was held on Monday, November
12, 2012, in the Divan Office at Ararat Shrine. It was called to order at
7:08 p.m. by Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd.
Chaplain Loyd Gentry gave the invocation.
Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd said that Imperial ordered Ararat to return
the money to the Hospital Transportation Fund and make a more detailed
reporting of the amount to be charged. Imperial also said that the Temple
must inform the Imperial Council of the charges and request approval before
taking the money. There must be a very careful and detailed accounting of
the charges, even though General Order Number 1 delineates the allowable
charges. The charges are allowable, but must be very clearly shown to be in
accordance with all state, federal and Shrine laws, while maintaining a very
clear separation of the philanthropic and fraternal organizations.
Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer said that the phones have been out of
order, and repairs are under way.
The Circus VIP Party will be held in the Mezzanine Hospitality Room
because there will be no separate Temple hospitality room. Some VIP’s have
reported previous commitments and will not attend.
The Hispanic Night is looking very successful.
In general the entire Circus is looking very good.
There was some discussion of Divan assignments for the Circus. Apparently,
some Divan forgot to bring the assignment list to the meeting.
There will be recognition of Dave Bushakra during the Circus.
Oriental Guide Steve Johnson stated that Units and Clubs need to get
better at advertising the beneficiary of their events. We need to have better
documentation of proceeds and expenses, as well as the beneficiary of the
event. He asked all Divan members to review planning sheets and procedures
with their Units and Clubs. Chief Rabban Spencer suggested reviewing
procedures at the next Officers Seminar.
Treasurer Mike Allen said that Imperial is confiscating funds distributed
from a trust fund over the past several years. Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck
called for due diligence disposition of trust funds. Chief Rabban
Spencer suggested a legal review of the fund in question. The trust under
discussion refers to Ararat Shrine and “Children’s Hospitals,” therefore leading
to the requirement for all distributions go to the Hospitals. Confusion
reigns supreme.
Treasurer Allen also reported that the Restaurant losses are now about
one third of last year’s losses.
Chief Rabban Wayne recommended closing the Temple on Thanksgiving
Day and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for a long Thanksgiving weekend.
Recorder Dan Smothers discussed several requests for Remission of
Dues and Demits.
First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi discussed the Festival of Champions,
and said that we need to “talk it up” in the future. He would like to see
more Shriners volunteer to help in the future.
Director Jim Waggoner discussed servicing the hospital van. In the future,
his garage will do the service work.
Marshal Henry McDaniel presented a bid for replacement of a leaking
domestic hot water storage tank. He also reported that all of our rooftop air
conditioning units need work. The performance of our last HVAC maintenance
contractor was discussed.
Captain of the Guard Jerry Grimes said that at least one Club is expected
to contribute toward payment of the Ceremonial expenses.
Outer Guard Butch Pugh discussed the Authorized Strength of Units.
Much of the discussion centered upon Circus commissions and assessments
which are based on Authorized Strength.
Chaplain Loyd gave the benediction.
The meeting adjourned at 10:42 pm.
Noble Benny Bigler was born on a farm
near Springfield, Missouri on August
27, 1944. He graduated from North KC
High School in 1963.
Benny has an extensive background in
law enforcement, starting out as a volunteer
with the Riverside,
MO Police Department
in 1963. This
led to the Parkville,
MO Police Department,
the Clay and
Platte County Sheriff’s
Departments,
and becoming the
Chief of Police at
Lake Waukomis.
As Chief at
Lake Waukomis an
opportunity came along that would allow Noble
Bigler a second career, while still remaining
Chief of Police. This opportunity was with
Sprint as the Head of Security. The association
with Sprint wasn’t just security, but training
that involved being sent to New York and being
taught about eavesdropping equipment.
Retiring after 23 years and with the knowledge
gained on high tech surveillance systems,
Benny was not ready to quit. Still the Chief of
Police at Lake Waukomis, Noble Bigler was
hired by the second largest electric company
in the USA, Par Electric. This position stepped
up things another notch, and dealt with internal
counter intelligence. Benny didn’t comment
further, and I didn’t ask any questions. :-)
Noble Bigler is a Brother in good standing
at Blue Lodge 659, North of the River. He became
a Noble at Ararat Shrine in 2008. If you
see a patrol car on Thursday nights, it’s Benny
doing the driving.
Last but definitely not least, Noble Bigler
and Lady Sherry have shared the last 42 years
together. They are the proud parents of Mark
and Shannon and Grandma and Grandpa to a
Grandson. Life is good.
I have truly enjoyed being allowed to take
part in this story and wish the Bigler family all
the best.
Until next time, God Bless.
November Temple Meeting Notes
BY STEVE DOWDY
Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd called the November,
2012, meeting to order at 7:35 pm,
November 14, 2012 in the Frank S. Land
Ballroom.
Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck informed
the Captain of the Guard that the Potentate
was about to open Ararat Temple for business,
who, in turn, informed the Outer Guard.
Captain of the Guard Jerry Grimes reported
that our Temple was under a double and
trusty guard.
Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer looked
around and informed the Potentate that our
Temple was free from jeopardy as there were
none present save members of our order. The
Potentate replied that “It is well.”
Oriental Guide Steve Johnson prepared the
Altar.
High Priest and Prophet Clarence Kirby
remembered our Nobles who had been visited
by the Black Camel and gave the invocation.
The Legion of Honor presented the colors.
The assembled Nobles, led by the Chief
Rabban, recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance.
Noble Jacque Mote led the Nobility in
singing the National Anthem.
Illustrious Sir Richard suspended the
meeting for a presentation of 50 Year Membership
Pins to Nobles Bill Dean, Sr., Robert
Beebe, Ronald Mason, Louis Hinck, Venton
Goodnight, and Kenneth Bowen. Only Noble
Bill Dean was present.
The Minutes of the October Meeting were
not read due to a previous motion waiving the
reading of minutes for the entire term of Illustrious
Sir Richard.
Recorder Dan Smothers discussed the
transfer of money from the Hospital Transportation
to the Temple General Fund. He read
a letter from the Imperial Potentate in which
we were ordered to reimburse the Transportation
Fund. The Recorder showed a copy of
the check whereby the funds were reimbursed.
Imperial requires a more completely defined accounting
of the expenses to be reimbursed, and
also requires that Imperial be informed before
the funds are transferred to the Temple. Obviously,
such transfers must be very carefully
documented and approved to be sure that the
separation between fraternal and philanthropic
is maintained.
Noble Tom Edgar presented a Souvenir
Shovel from the Ground-breaking Ceremony
for our Temple.
Illus. Sir Richard told us that it was “Stepup
Night,” and relinquished the podium to
Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer.
Recorder Dan then read two Petitions for
Creation, one Petition for Restoration, and several
requests for Demits and several requests
for Remission of Dues. All petitions and requests
were approved.
Treasurer Mike Allen gave the Treasurer’s
Report, which showed that, for the month of
October, the Temple is still solvent, although
expenses exceeded revenues for the month.
Restaurant expenses for the year still exceed
income, but the deficit is only about one third
of last years.
No visitors were present.
Chief Rabban Spencer recognized the veterans
among the Nobility.
The Guides made a donation to the 2012
Circus.
The Provost Shrine Club made a donation
to the General Fund.
Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer reported
that the Circus would start the next day. We
have been getting good news coverage and income
has been good. Chief Rabban Wayne presented
Circus Jackets to Nobles Dennis Collins,
Howard Silvers, Billy D. Smith, two to members
of the Sedalia SC, and one to a member
of the Warsaw SC. The jackets for members of
the two clubs will be presented at their Clubs.
He also read a letter from Noble Jim McGuire
thanking everyone for the Kickoff Party honoring
him for surpassing the $100,000 mark for
Circus fund raising.
Bates County Shrine Club made a very
generous donation to the Circus.
Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck
asked for permission from the Nobility to enter
into a contract with Municipal Auditorium for
the 2013 Shrine Circus. A motion authorizing
the contract was passed.
High Priest and Prophet Clarence Kirby
announced that the 2013 Swap Meets will be
held in Lathrop, Missouri. Several Divan members
recently visited the Lathrop site, and liked
what they saw.
First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi said
that the Fall Ceremonial was FANTASTIC!
Donations have almost covered the cost of the
Ceremonial, but money is still needed. He told
us that Bingo is doing well, but still needs our
help. The Children’s Christmas Party will be
on December 15.
First Ceremonial Master Nick then announced
that he would not be a candidate for
the Divan in 2013, citing business and personal
reasons. He vowed to participate, bring in
members and raise money for the Shrine.
Chief Rabban Wayne thanked Noble Nick
for his service.
Second Ceremonial Master Randy Berry
talked about the Festival of Champions. It
was a lot of fun, won by the band from Buhler,
Kansas, a small town north of Wichita. He
described the contribution of the Festival of
Champions, and what we do there. He reported
that Noble Ian Ramage sold three cases of event
programs.
Bingo Chairman Buck Johnson said that
Bingo goes on every week, and presented
last month’s profits to the General Fund. The
players also donated $600.00 to the Hospital
Transportation Fund
Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell told us that
his office has been busy, transporting 134 kids,
by air, to distant hospitals, and 144, by van, to
St Louis. Southwest Airlines has saved us a lot
of money with their Green Pass program.
Membership Chairman Rod McGrath talked
about making new Nobles feel welcome at
functions and meetings. He announced a Cold
Sands Ceremony, scheduled for December 17,
with a cost of only, $185.00, including 2013
dues.
Upcoming events include the 2013 elections
on December 12, the Children’s Christmas
Party on December 15, and Camels Milk
on December 31.
High Priest and Prophet Kirby gave the
benediction and the meeting was adjourned at
8:58 pm.
Potentate Richard presents Noble Bill Dean,
Sr. with his 50 year pin and Certificate from
the Imperial Council.
Danny Smothers presents Ararat
Shrine ground breaking shovel on
behalf of Noble Tom Edgar.
Festival of
laughed and behaved politely while having
a lot of fun. Some of them even danced
with Nobles old enough to be their fathers,
and at least one young lady talked one of
our dance divas into giving her dance lessons.
Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be having
as much fun as her student. It was great
seeing such a diverse group dancing to a
band called Diversity. Can’t you just picture
them telling their friends that those old
people really know how to have fun!
It taught me that we can attract young
men to the Nobility, and we can enjoy being
around each other. That means a lot to our
was there at the Potentate’s Ball.
I think a lot of the credit must go to the
First Lady, because I just don’t see
Illustrious Sir Kevin putting all of that
together by himself. But, with Lady
Dianna’s help, and guidance, he threw a
helluva party! They’re quite a pair!
If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, can
continue in that tradition, we are going to
have a fantastic year. We CAN have fun while
helping our kids, and it’s time we did so.
Fund.
With a full stadium looking on, Potentate Richard
Floyd presented the trophy from Ararat to the High
School with the most pre-sold tickets. That trophy
went to Buhler High School from Buhler, KS. The Potentate
and his Divan were then asked to present trophies
to the three top performing high schools in four
divisions during the Preliminary Awards Ceremony.
The 2012 Festival of Champions was fortunate
to see performances from many schools in the Kansas
City metro area; namely, Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit
North, Lee’s Summit West, Pleasant Hill, Shawnee
Mission North, Shawnee Mission South, Shawnee
Mission West, Butler, Blue Valley Southwest,
Warrensburg, Raytown, and Platte County. There
were other schools that traveled a greater distance;
namely, Branson, Monett, Topeka West and Buhler
from the state of Kansas.
Ararat Shrine was recognized by the stadium announcer
for the service provided by Ararat in helping
make this a successful event. Special “thanks” goes
to the Divan and Nobles from the Greeters, Provost,
Shrineta, Transporters and Warrensburg Houn Dawg
Shrine Club, for helping Ararat shine. Our Nobles
helped direct and park the school busses and their
equipment trailers, sold programs, and manned the
main gate where they took tickets and provided hand
stamps.
Mark your calendar now to attend next year’s
Festival of Champions scheduled for October 19,
2013. We’ll be looking for you.
David Johnson, Owner
Warsaw Shrine Club
BY CHUCK ALLCORN, SCRIBE
Hello from the Nobles and their ladies from the Truman Lake area. What a beautiful
time of year in the lake area. We are in the middle of the holidays and we are
looking forward to Christmas with our loved ones. We would like to welcome all
Nobles and their ladies to attend our dinner meeting on December 21. We will have all of
the trimmings and enjoy a wonderful evening. We have donated funds to help with many
local charities during this holiday season. We have joined other civic organizations so
we can provide food, clothing, and toys to less fortunate members of our community. We
want to give the people in the area a Christmas they may not have enjoyed without the
generous efforts of this caring community.
The Haunted Trail was a success and we are looking forward to next year. Many
people are talking about how scary the acts were. We have more acts coming aboard
next year and we are looking forward to bringing this event to the public next year. We
will be advertising next year so look for the dates and plan to come join in the fun. We
also provided a booth for the community project called “Boo on the square”. This is an
opportunity to join area businesses and other civic organizations to provide candy to the
children in a safe happy environment. We are proud to be a part of Warsaw and the sur-
I moved to the area a year ago and I would like to thank all of the Nobles, their wives
and the Warsaw community for making this chapter in my life wonderful. If you haven’t
visited our community or our club we would like to extend an invitation to you. Make it
a point to plan a vacation to our area, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. That is all
for this month. To our Ararat Shrine family--have a Happy, Safe, and Enjoyable Holiday.
Sedalia Shrine Club
BY RON HINKLE, SCRIBE
Here’s hoping all of our Nobles & Ladies in Shrinedom had a most enjoyable Thanksgiving. The
Sedalia Shrine Club wishes all of you the very best for the Holidays. Remember, there are less
than 30 shopping days left until Christmas, and then “YIPPIE”, 2013, another year with limitless
opportunities. When contemplating your choices of service and volunteerism please consider the many
ways you can make a difference in the lives of disabled children. By keeping the many shrine clubs &
units open and viable these children have a better chance to be whole. It all starts and ends with “YOU.”
We hope you have enjoyed our monthly Breakfasts and if you haven’t tried it please come out and
join us the first Saturday of every month. Be sure and give our crew a big thank-you for their faithfulness
in making these Breakfasts a successful fundraiser for the Sedalia Shrine Club.
Our Fun Kor has completed another year of parade showmanship in our surrounding communities.
It’s really a pleasure to strut our stuff for those who come out and watch the many parades we are entered
in. The big kick is in the faces of all the children. It’s really something when you hear adults talking
about Shriners and parades when they were kids.
We thank our Ladies for the many ways your volunteerism has made a huge difference in the success
and survival of this club. There’s no way we can thank you enough. We ask our Creator to impart a
special Blessing to each and every one of “you.”
The Sedalia Shrine Club appreciates the input of our membership. Please come and share your
ideas on how we can make this club more successful. Shriners help children, as we all know and Shriners
are obligated to help each other, which I hope we haven’t forgotten.
Remember our sick and disabled when you hit your knees and a special prayer for those who serve
this Great Nation.
Ladies Oriental Shrine
of North America
Tarrara Court# 83 Independence, Missouri
By Jackie Burke • 816-810-3843
Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America has had 11 months of fun filled activities and wants all Ladies from Ararat
Shrine Center, Units and Clubs, and other Shrine Centers to know of the great support we give to help Shriners
Hospitals.
Just REMEMBER we have FUN.
Monthly Meetings - Unit Meetings - Grand Council - Unit Meets - Ararat Pub Crawls - Breakfast Fundraiser -
Fashion Show - Fundraisers support LOSNA General Fund – Special Project – Shriners Hospitals
This sounds like a lot of work but when you see a smile on a Shrine child’s face it so worth it.
The Ararat Fall Ceremonial and Pub Crawl were held on October 26th. What a great evening packed with lots of
2012/2013
High Priestess Lady
excitement for family and friends. We welcome the new Nobles and their Ladies and hope you enjoyed receiving lots of information from the units
and clubs during the Pub Crawl. Get active and you will find Ararat Shrine Center full of activities, fun filled events and the best support group you
will find. Ladies, we hope you had a chance to stop by the table supported by the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and collect some information.
If you did not, please contact Lynne Cooper or Jackie Burke.
Pictured at left is beautiful Lady Carol Sue Roberts, Grand High Priestess. She is a wonderful lady full of energy and smiles who
has the responsibility of making sure all Courts in the LOSNA follow all guidelines, and visits each Court in the USA, Canada, Alaska
and Hawaii from May 2012 to the end of her journey in May 2013. This may sound like fun but it is a lot of work. Tarrara Court had
the honor of her visit on October 24, 2012. Carol Sue’s Egyptian Lady’s motto is the Golden Rule. “Do unto others as you would have
them do unto you.” Always remember this and practice this in your day to day dealings with each other. Please respect and be kind
and thoughtful to each other.
The Ladies support various special projects with emphasis given to the LOS Special Project for the year, as chosen by the
reigning Grand High Priestess. This special project is designed to assist an area of specific need within the Shriners Hospitals such
as research into various childhood conditions. For the year 2012-2013, Lady Carol Sue Roberts, Grand High Priestess, has chosen “Psychological
Rehabilitation of the Burn Child and Rehabilitation of Children with Cerebral Palsy” as the Special Project. Other projects supported include
but are not limited to Camp Ability for burned children, the “adoption” of special children and their
families and Burn Education Programs.
If you are interested in becoming a member of this wonderful Order, you may contact us by
touching the shoulder of one of the lovely Ladies from Tarrara Court or call current High Priestess
Lynne Cooper at 816-510-4509 or look-up the LOSNA website at: http://ladiesorientalshrine.org.
Sandbuggie Unit
BY MARTIN CARIGNAN, SCRIBE
The Buggie family is very
proud of their member,
Noble John Nelson who
was selected as the Class Honoree
for the Fall Ceremonial. John handled the
Housing Chairman and Chief Aide duties this
year with the help of his Lady Sherrill. Together
they met the challenges and made this year pleasurable
for all attending the functions of Ararat.
Again, thanks John and Sherrill for all your hard
work. Also, let’s not forget all the work from
each of the Potentate’s Aides for their time and
work that went into making Ararat a fun time.
Since my last article two of our members,
Noble Lowell Davis and Noble Jim McCann
have been through some difficult times. Lowell
had an operation on his back and Jim had an
accident which has slowed him down. Both are
progressing and will soon be up and running.
The Buggies are now in storage for the
winter cold. I have in the past worried about the
life span of the buggies as they are now 45 years
old. BUT, they are outlasting their drivers (due
mostly to availability of car spare parts.)
At our November meeting the election of officers
to keep our wheels turning in 2013 was completed.
Noble Bill Smith was elected President and
our new Noble Larry Schroeder as Vice President.
Nobles out there that would like to become
a member of a motorized unit and ride in parades
please contact Ernie Wills at (660) 641-2504, or
any member of the Unit.
What
Goes Up
Must Come
Down
Newton’s Law of Gravity
can also apply to the Gold and Silver
Market which has gone up-up-up
for a very long time. The gravity
applied here is simply: “Now may
be the time to sell!” There are
some indicators that prices may
start downward and I am always
happy to discuss that with my fellow
Shriners. If you have any gold or
silver in coins or jewelry, I give FREE
APPRAISALS and I enjoy talking
UPS and DOWNS.
Before you sell,
give me a yell…
Blue Springs Shrine Club
BY FRED “FINGERS” HARLE P.P. ‘82
Ho! Ho! Ho! Said the jolly fella. You know the one with the red suit and the white beard who
travels around this time of year in a sleigh pulled by all those reindeer. And as the story has
been told and handed down from generation to generation, the sleigh is supposed to be full
of presents for all the good little boys and girls. Now if you are like me, I’ll just bet that there is
some of that little boy or girl still left in all of us, no matter how old we’ve become. However, I
did say “good” didn’t I? Just remember that it’s not too late to start being a whole lot nicer to those
around us if you would like to have that jolly fella with the sleigh make a stop at your roof top and
unload a bunch of presents.
Think about it, it’s not too late to start.
Have you noticed all the new calendars you’re getting in the mail lately? I mean those for
2013. While I’m thinking about it, don’t forget to mark this year’s calendar with all those dates for
Christmas parties, so you don’t forget where you’re suppose to be, because without you where is
Santa Claus going to be!!!
Now for some BSSC, that’s short for Blue Springs Shrine Club news. Notice!!! At our November
Shrine Club meeting we will elect our new corps of officers for 2013. They will have their
hands full to keep up with our growing club. With all the enthusiasm in our club, be sure to get on
board and hang on because 2013 is going to be a fun year.
We’d like to extend a great big welcome to our newest members Noble Phil and Lady Brandy
Meisenheimer.
Our First Lady Gail Gargotta was a patient recently at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center
and is now home. I understand she has made a full recovery, so President James will need to say
yes, ma’am and take her out to dinner.
As reported in our last issue of our Shrine News, Noble Bob Turner is improving, so is Noble
Louie Sohn who is recovering from back surgery, Lady Martha Martin’s broken foot is improving,
and Lady Vivian Snell’s arm is improving. All in all our club is doing well and everything is
looking up.
Our club’s Texas Hold’em Fundraiser held recently at Side Pockets in Blue Springs was
again a rousing success. Thanks to all those who participated!!
The Pub Crawl and Fall Ceremonial was a big hit thanks to our newest members Noble Tony
Kenna and Lady Toni, and Noble Phil Meisenheimer and Lady Brandy.
They passed out the hot dogs which were yummy. Special thanks to Noble Jeff Quibell for
printing up our BSSC brochure for use at the ceremonial. There were 20 new candidates with 10
of them being from eastern Jackson County. They will be receiving a special invitation to come
check out our Blue Springs Shrine Club.
Our club’s Christmas Party and Dinner will be on December 9th at V’s Italian Ristorante, so
mark your calendars accordingly.
Hope to see you next month when we greet the New Year. Whoopee, “Happy New Year”,
already.
Mini Model T’s
BY STEVE HARGRAVE, SCRIBE
New members Phil & Brandi Meisenheimer and Tony & Toni Kenna helped out at the Pub
Crawl.
We have come to the end of another year for the Mini Model T’s. We have not done as
much as we would have liked to do this year but we have had fun. The unit has gained
another member and we are hoping to have several more in time for the next parade
season. One of the sad things about coming to the close of the year is that we will have to say good
bye to our Liaison Officer Henry McDaniel and get to know yet another Liaison Officer. We have
had a good time with Henry and we hope that we have made another friend for years to come. On
the bright side we look forward to making another friend in the coming year as we work with our
new Liaison Officer.
Congratulations to this year’s Unit Officers. The new officers for 2013 are: President James
“Jamie” Blackburn, Vice-President Keith Preston, and Secretary/Treasurer Steven Hargrave. Of
course at this writing we do not know who the Director of the unit is going to be, as the new Potentate
of Ararat has not chosen anyone for the position.
The ladies are in the process of setting up a Christmas Party for the Unit this year. They will
let us know all of the details once they work out the location, time and menu for the party. I am
sure it will be a wonderful surprise for all of us once the final details are worked out. It is the unit’s
desire that this news will be read by all of the members that have not been able to make it to the
meetings in past several months. For some reason we have not been able to reach some of the
members that have moved from their address of record. If you are one of the members of the T’s
in this category, give us a call, we would really like to see you again.
Nobles and Ladies,
Thank you to all that made
the Fall one-day ceremonial a
great success! This took a lot of
coordination and hard work on
everyone’s part. What seemed
like a whirl-wind monumental
task was made easier and came
off perfectly because of the
amazing team of Nobles, ladies
and staff who made it happen.
Thank you, also, to all of the
ladies that contributed to, and
participated in, the Ladies’
Social.
Please remember to reach
out to our new Nobles and
their ladies to make them feel
welcome at Ararat Shrine!! Buy
them dinner, invite them to your
unit/club function, a shrine party
or just simply say hello and ask
them to join you at your table!
We have lots of new friends
to make and perhaps a new
member to your club or unit!
Thanks,
