(The following article was submitted by Noble Gil Head)
Masonic Ties
On April 12, 1861, the opening shots of the civil war were fired on Fort Sumter,
in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Forty eight days later, May 30, 1861, Clay
Lodge # 207 was granted a charter from the Grand Lodge of Missouri.
The history of Masons in Missouri goes back to 1816, with a charter being
granted through the Grand Lodge of Tennessee. A Masonic Lodge was functioning
in Missouri before Missouri was admitted as a state in 1821. The first Master
of Clay Lodge was L.M. Lewis who served in that capacity for the years of 1861,
1862, and 1863. Prof. Lewis (WM) erected a two story frame building about 1860
and organized a school, called Normal College, because many of the young men and
ladies of the surrounding area could take advanced work–above the elementary level,
and become school teachers. The second floor was used by the Masonic Lodge (#
207). The Lodge first met in this building in Greenville for about 23 years, which is
located near the South entrance of Watkins Mill State Park. The building was long
ago destroyed but the footer can still be seen in the area. The Lodge was located in
Claysville for about 5-6 years and moved to Excelsior Springs in1889 and has been
there since that time.
There was a need for a permanent location for the Lodge, so on December 22,
1908 the Excelsior Springs Masonic Building and Realty Company, was formed
by 20 members of the Lodge, each buying two shares of the Corporation valued at
$200.00, for a total of $4,000. The par value of each share was $100, One Hundred
Dollars each share. The Articles of Incorporation of the Excelsior Springs Masonic
Building and Realty Company was recorded by the Clay County Recorder of Deeds
in Liberty, Missouri in Book 153, page 514, John Will Hall, Recorder.
The Building Corporation purchased the present building in about 1936. It is
located at the corner of Spring and Main Street, in downtown Excelsior Springs. The
building was built in 1906-1909 and was known as The Auditorium.
On October 18, 1926, a Lodge member, William E. Steck, donated a tract of
land on the west edge of Excelsior Springs off of Crown Hill Road to the Lodge. This
land was to be used for a Masonic Cemetery. A gift of $10,000 came with the land to
be used for maintenance of the Cemetery.
The Lodge celebrated its 100th anniversary at the Lodge Hall in 1961, and celebrated
its 140th anniversary at the United Methodist Church in 2001. Plans are being
made to celebrate its 150th anniversary in late May and throughout the year of 2011.
The history of the city of Excelsior Springs and Clay Lodge are intertwined.
The past leaders of the city in Civic, Charitable, Religious, Educational, and Governmental
organizations are found on the membership roles of our Masonic Lodge.
Excelsior Springs has been good to Clay Lodge #207 and the Lodge has been good
to the city of Excelsior Springs.
Pote’s Notes!
By b.j. richardson
Hello Nobles and Ladies!
I’m not sure about you but I am ready for some warmer
weather and getting outside to soak up some sun. Speaking of getting outside, the
parade season is upon us with Missouri City being our first parade on May 7 th with
a lineup at 9am. Don’t forget that the lodge in Missouri City will have their annual
breakfast at the lodge, prior to the parade. After Missouri City it’s off to Richmond for
a noon lineup, the streets are always lined waiting for the Shriners to come through
town, so let’s not disappoint them! On the 14 th of May we will be in Marshall for their
parade lineup at 10am, followed by lunch at the fairgrounds after the parade. Other upcoming
events include the Mounted Guards’ Buddy Bass Tournament on April 29 and
May 1 taking off out of Long Shoal Marina on Truman Lake, as well as The Cinco De
Mayo Party in Bennett at 6pm on May 6 th –I heard they have a new margarita recipe
that is REALLY good–you won’t want to miss it!!!
Since we are all in our planning and goal setting modes, I thought I would share
some information that was passed on to me.
Here are the 7 P’s in goal setting:
1. Passionate: Are you fervently interested in what you intend to do. Not only
that, are you able to do it easily and better than other people? Your goal is your inspiration
and aspiration.
2. Positive mindset: A positive mental attitude is essential to realize your objectives.
You will look at things on the bright side and work diligently towards your goals.
3. Practical: Is it achievable? Is it useful to yourself and others? Your goals
should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. When you have
many goals, set priority for each goal and work accordingly so that you are not overwhelmed.
4. Put in writing: Written goals are powerful tool. It is precise, clear and written
in positive terms. It spells out in great details the tasks for each stage and the completion
dates. You will be kept posted to do your daily tasks because you notice it every
day.
5. Plan: You set yearly, monthly, weekly and daily tasks. Your plan is your road
map. You follow accordingly to get what you want in life.
6. Pay the price: A goal is not a goal when you can get something easily. It involves
time and tremendous effort. It takes blood, sweat and tears to reach your goal.
7. Perseverance: Do not be disheartened by setbacks along the way. Look at failures
and problems as valuable lessons to learn. There is no overnight success. It can
take many years to achieve your goals.
Goals give you meaning in life. They provide direction and measure your success.
You know what you are looking for and every day you strive to reach your objectives.
So, lets all set those goals - as units, clubs, and as individuals. Let’s aim to achieve
them, to grow beyond what we are, to be the best we can be.
Fraternally yours,
SUPERIOR TREE SERVICES
Spring is coming and so are the storms.

Membership Matters
By Rod McGrath, MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN
May is a
g r e a t
m o n t h
for our fraternity.
In May, spring has
sprung, golf clubs are swung, parades
have begun and the Director’s Staff is
having fun! It brings life to our fraternity
and excitement to everyone! It also
confirms something we don’t like to
acknowledge. We are nothing with out
members. Kaput, notta, nothing, done!
We see how a lack of membership
affects our fraternity already. Dues have
more than doubled in the last 7 years.
The hospitals have had to change the
way they do business. Units and Clubs
have difficulties filling their ranks. The
Temple restaurant has difficulties sustaining.
Our Temple budget suffers and
all the “extras” we used to take for granted
are gone.
The difference between 7000 members
and 3000 members is $420,000.00
a year in temple revenue at the current
dues rate. Yes, $420,000.00 a YEAR!
When we have more members the work
load is spread around more evenly. The
restaurant has to take reservations. We
have more people parading and creating
awareness. The hospitals receive more
donations. And more children receive
care because of the number of Nobles
offering the services of our hospitals.
That is why it amazes me that it is
not our number one priority. Sometimes
we say it is our number one priority, but
actions speak louder than words. We can
make it our number one priority. But it
will take a shift in the way we do “business”.
It will take work and it might feel
uncomfortable at first. But the rewards
far out weigh the direction we are going.
See, we have fewer than 3400 members
as of today. I say this to only help you
understand the severity of our situation.
We welcome a new class of Nobles
this month. How we do that makes a difference.
We have to begin with ourselves
and acknowledge that they will mimic
us. We set the tone to how they will
view the Shrine, what is expected, how
to conduct themselves and the attitude
in which they will do “business”. It’s
almost like a child viewing
a parent’s every action. You
are accountable for your
conduct, actions and attitude
whether you like it or not.
Is the Fraternity everything
they were told when a petition
was handed to them? I
know it is.
When we decide to ask ourselves
the question “Will this action help create,
restore or retain a member?” before
3ONE IN
we make any decision or any action,
only then will we start to turn membership
numbers around. I will say that the
Shrine is growing rapidly around the
country and even in Missouri. Abu Ben
Adhem is again on pace for a positive
increase. What are they doing? I went
there and observed and asked. It is simple.
They are active in their blue lodges,
rite bodies and communities. They
work together to build Freemasonry as
a whole. They have a common goal and
respect for everything they do. We can
do the same. I don’t know of a Temple
with better Nobles anywhere than Ararat
Shrine.
I am asking you to be a leader within
your group and make any changes you
need to in order to TRULY make Membership
THE priority. Attend the ceremonial.
Attend the Monthly membership
meeting, 4th Thursday of
each month at 7pm in the
Sultan’s Lounge. Attend the
temple meetings and become
active. Look for qualified
candidates and forever
walk and act as a Master
Mason.
I’m excited about our future and
where we can be, even by the end of the
year. The Shrine is evolving every day
Don’t Let Dues Be An Issue
By Rod McGrath
I
sometimes hear from Nobles that dues can become an issue, especially when they
are all due at the same time! I hear several misconceptions every year about dues.
I hope to clear up some of those and show you a way to make being a Shriner very
affordable.
First of all let’s examine what our dues are and where the money goes. Ararat’s
yearly dues are $125.00 total.
$105.00 - Ararat Shrine’s operating budget
$15.00 - Imperial Shrine per capita
$5.00 - Hospitals per capita
$125.00 - Total dues
I know times are tough. I’ve personally been hit very hard by the recent turn of
the economy. But I know being a Shriner is important to me and I wanted to remain a
Shriner. So I examined my options of how to make the Shrine affordable.
Firstly, I had to put things in perspective. Really, how expensive are the Shrine
dues? Well, if I bought 1 gallon of gasoline at $3.50 that would pay my Ararat dues for
12.5 days. I can pay my Ararat dues for 20 days for the price of a Big Mac extra value
meal ($5.59 without tax). If I want to pay my Ararat dues for 16 days, it will only cost
me $4.50, about the average cost of a pack of cigarettes. And for just 3 ounces of that
$1.25 can of soda pop, I can pay my Ararat dues today!
So after looking at it a little closer, I realized it wasn’t expensive at all. It costs
just 28 cents a day to pay my Ararat dues, and only 34 cents a day total, if I want to
include Imperial and Hospital assessment. I never hear about anybody complaining
about Imperial or Hospital dues though.
So what am I to do about it, because I can’t pay my dues daily, weekly or monthly,
can I? The Temple wants my dues all at one time, and at Christmas time at that! How
dare they? Well, I have my work cut out for me.
So here is what I‘ve come up with. Yes, dues are due January 1st of each year.
NOT March 31st. I have two options that immediately jump out at me. I CAN PAY
MY DUES MONTHLY, in advance! And I can BRING IN TWO NEW CREATIONS
A YEAR and my Ararat dues are waived! Let me explain. If you are current on your
dues, you can start making installments towards your dues for next year and at just $25
a month, starting now, you will have your dues paid before Christmas! No pain, a lot to
gain! Or you can help the Temple more, by recruiting 2 new Nobles, and earning your
next years Ararat dues waived. I have options!! Yeah!!! I can do this!
So my Brothers, let’s put our dues in perspective and plan for success. We have
options and all we need to do is exercise these options. If you are not current on your
dues now, start making installments until they are current and then the office will send
you your current dues card.
I know each man finds his own reward for being a Shriner. I’ve not addressed the
benefits. Those benefits are yours individually. Are those rewards worth 3 ounces of
soda pop a day?
Fraternally,
Once upon a time, I bought a bottle
of wine described as the “best
wine ever sold” by a friend and
vintner who owned a vineyard. He was
a real wine lover and connoisseur. He
even drove a Citroen because he wanted
to look like a French wine merchant.
I took that bottle home with high
expectations of pleasure. I carefully removed
the cork, allowed the wine to
breathe for half an hour, and poured a bit
for tasting.
It smelled like the spot where my
dog had marked the carpet. It looked
like water from a stagnant swamp. You
can guess what it tasted like.
I took it back to Dutton, and if he
had truly been French, he would have
& Wine
fallen on his sword! Oh, the humiliation!
One of the most disheartening experiences
of drinking wine is opening
a special bottle and realizing that there
is something wrong. It’s also terribly
embarrassing to give a tainted bottle to
a friend. It’s particularly bad if you’ve
been bragging.
Two of the four most common flaws
that you will encounter are the following:
1. The Corked Bottle: A corked bottle
will have the unmistakable aromas of
a musty bathroom, moldy basement, and
wet cardboard. To the taste, these wines
will have an astringent quality, and much
of the fruit taste will be masked. The
contaminant is called TCA, and comes
from natural corks. Synthetic corks, used
in most of the wines that I buy, are becoming
more and more common, and
they don’t contribute to this problem.
2. Over Oxidation: When a wine
has been stored for too long under dry
conditions, it may become oxidized.
Arid environments will cause the corks
to dry out and shrink, allowing air to enter
the bottle and ultimately destroy the
wine. Oxidized wines are the hallmark
of improper storage, causing the wine
to taste flat and unappealing. They will
taste overly acidic, can actually taste
like vinegar. Be especially cautious of
oxidation when purchasing an older
wine at the liquor store.
Next month, we will look at more
common flaws, and discuss some of possible
ramifications and remedies. Remember,
I returned my tainted wine to
the man that sold it to me, and he was
mortified.
If you haven’t been to Jackson County Shrine Club in awhile stop in and say hello. See the
improvements we’ve made to our building and hear about other planned additions. We are
trying to get enough money and skilled labor to hopefully install a handicap accessible ramp
this year to make it easier for members and guests to get inside our building. It will happen, I
just can’t say when. I will keep you posted on our progress.
We are ready for our onions this year. We have an initial 200 bags ordered and 100 bags
in reserve. Last year we sold 330 bags and we hope to surpass this number this year. Last year
was our first attempt at this and thanks to many hard working members we even exceeded
our expectations. Let’s do it again. With your help and support we can do it! Remember, this
raises money for our club and our Temple, plus it lets you meet many non-Masons who may
be interested in joining our family. Keep Blue Lodge and Shrine petitions handy. Explain Masonry
and the Scottish and York Rite Bodies; tell of all the good they do to support our “Kids.”
Even only signing up one new member is a start in the right direction. Remember when you
asked to become a Mason and Shriner how elated and proud you felt when you entered the
world of Masonry. Pass this feeling on. Believe me it does change people’s lives, if they live
up to their Masonic obligations.
Of course, this is dues time. Don’t drop out of any clubs, units or the Temple because of
finances. We are all in this together. Call me (816-520-0183) and we will be glad to help you
in any way the club can. We want you as a member, not for your money but for your friendship
and the chance to have fun together.
In April we started out the month with the “Return of the Turkey Fries.” This went real
well, but our attendance from our own members was lacking. Remember, if this club is to
grow and move forward, we need support from all members.
The E-Board meets on the Tuesday night before Ararat’s monthly business meeting at 7
p.m. Our next meeting is May 10th. All members are invited to join us and suggest ways we
can improve our club. Remember, this is every member’s club and your input does count.
We are planning several By-Law changes to be voted on at our Business Meetings. When
all changes are finalized, we will send you a copy of the changes and then you as a member
can vote to accept or deny these changes. You also have the right as a member to suggest other
changes that need to be made. All members have the right to guide us in the right direction.
We had a great turnout at our Annual Pancake Breakfast. Many thanks to all members
who donated money, food, and other needed items to make this fundraiser for our club a huge
success. We would also like to thank our cooks, servers and helpers who worked their tails off
while serving the club. It was another fun event. If you missed out on all the great food – too
bad – too sad, but don’t worry; we will do it again next Easter.
Speaking of food, we have a great feast on our meeting nights starting at 6 pm – 7 pm.
Then we hold our meeting. This is all for you and your Ladies to enjoy. We ask for a goodwill
donation so we can buy food for the next month’s meeting. Bring your Lady as the women
get together in the Lounge and enjoy each other’s company during our meeting. Yes, we want
you and your Lady here to enjoy the club. We meet on the fourth (4th) Tuesday of the month.
Hope to see more members at these dinners and meetings. Let’s continue the growth our club
has experienced and let’s move forward.
The Fun-Cor rode in the Independence St. Patty’s Day parade and had a ball!! Next parades
are Martin City and Richmond. We will be ready and out in force. If you would like to
join in our fun and ride one of our yellow devils call Fun-Cor Chairman Terry Slayton (816-
833-3166) and we will make arrangements for a scooter to be available. As they say, “You
don’t know how much fun you will have until you try it!”
Our 4th Annual Old Timers BBQ Contest on August 12/13 is filling up. Please get your
application in to Steve Holbrook (816-356-0447) and reserve your spot. I goofed up in last
month’s article and said this is sanctioned by the KC BBQ Society. My fault – my mistake. It
is governed by the Old-Timers BBQ Rules. Call Steve and he will explain everything. This is
a full house event with great music, great food and a heck of a good time. Even if you don’t
compete, stop by and enjoy. This event continues to grow as all Master BBQ Chefs find out
about the great fun and hospitality we have to offer. Remember to support your clubs, units,
and Temple. Find new nobles and support our “Kids.”
Our donation to the Disabled American Veterans Queen City Chapter #10 for the use of
our building, made their Rummage Sale that supports Veterans overseas and at home, a great
success. Many shoppers took brochures and information home on becoming a Mason and a
Shriner, plus they were very impressed with our building and our hospitality. How great it is
when we can support our Vets and our community. This is Shriners at Work!
If you are interested in renting our building for your next event, contact Aaron Gardner
(816-316-3593) and he will handle all the details. Until next month, remember, at Jackson
County Shrine Club we say, “Where the dues are cheap and the FUN is priceless.”
Nobody Told Me!
BY STEVE DOWDY
Our Temple restaurant has been
brought to my attention again.
Seems like everybody has an opinion,
and sometimes two or three opinions.
Some of the most firmly held opinions are
held by Nobles who have not had a meal in
the restaurant in 10 years.
We have to recognize that it is very
difficult to operate a restaurant that can
serve 800 meals at a time, but normally
serves less than 50 meals a day. It might
be possible to run a fast food joint like that,
but there you don’t worry too much about
good service. Ararat is expected to run a
the fare on Pot Roast Night. As for sandwiches,
the Reuben is wonderful, the tenderloin
is excellent, and the burger is more
than I can eat! And, I ate a Chicken-Fried
Steak dinner a few days ago the likes of
which I have not experienced for years;
certainly not at any family-style place in
this city. I love good chicken-fried steak.
How about good service? We are
fortunate to have a good, friendly staff of
nice, pleasant, helpful, and patient bartenders
and waitresses that treat me well.
Sometimes I think I don’t give them the
consideration they deserve. When the
our workers, either. I can’t say that about
every place I’ve eaten at lately. I have
found that a phone call in advance is a
pretty good idea when I’m late. If I call in
and say I want something at 6:15, I’d better
not be late! It really helps if I’m bringing
eight friends with me. Calling ahead
also gives the staff a chance to tell you
that they have 220 meals to be served at
the precise time you want to be served, so
have a little patience.
OK, let’s talk about prices. Drinks
are cheaper at Ararat than any place in
town. Our drinks usually cost me about
twice as much anywhere else, and sometimes
even more. I usually get more of
the good stuff in each drink at Ararat, too.
All right, I’ll admit that you can’t get a
double cheeseburger for a buck at Ararat.
Just yesterday, I learned I can’t get one
there, either. They’ve raised the price to
$1.29! But a hamburger comparable to
our Shrineburger runs about $3.00 more
at the good burger place down the street,
and I can eat all of it. Jerri and I ate a meal
at Ararat last week, and the total charge
was about $35.00. We also ate at a place
HJ-03f1_Shrine_ad2OL.pdf 1 4/6/11 9:17 AM
in a small town east of KC last weekend,
for about the same price, except we didn’t
get two drinks with the second meal. Order
a steak at a good steakhouse and your
bill will be considerably higher.
If prices are higher at other good restaurants,
then it follows that tips will also
be higher. Many restaurants add a gratuity
of 18% to the check, so that $3.00 extra
cost really turns out to be $3.54 extra. No,
we are not required by law to tip, but restaurant
workers typically are paid about
one half of the minimum wage, and really
need, and deserve, that tip.
We are not making a profit at the Ararat
Restaurant. That’s probably the result
of lower prices. We don’t need to make a
profit, because our restaurant is a service
to Ron Harvey, Past Director of Ararat Motor Escort on being elected Central States Association
of Shrine Motor Corps President! Also more good news coming out from that
meeting are some rule changes. We are crossing our fingers to see our “Don Father” Don
Hendrickson, Past Director, return to the field with us. Don for the past few years has given
his guidance and support to our drill team in an advisory position. As a new rider two
years ago, it is hard to express how much his support has meant to me personally, as well
as the team. Thank you Don.
The dance with the ARARAT Band turned out so good that we are making plans
to have another one this October 22nd at the same location, and in conjunction
with the Knights of Columbus. Again we will have the ARARAT Big
Band back with us. Noble Morris Carter along with Bill Barlow and John King of the
Knights agreed that people enjoyed the Band in February. So it was decided that the
two groups would partner together and bring them back. This had been done in past
years. Noble Jim Marshall, Dance Chairman, said tickets will be on sale in October.
Noble Roy Cary is betting on the Knights to sell the most tickets. Mark your calendars
and plan to attend and enjoy the Big Band sound: Patsy Kline to POP to Rock and
much more.
The JC’s Rodeo is coming up soon, plan on helping to run our food booth. It takes
a lot of planning and help during the Rodeo. Also, the Onions will be coming soon,
support your Club and help sell them. We are also thinking about having another
Poker Run this year. We have a lot going on this year and your Club needs your help.
If a lot pitches in then no one has to work quite so hard. Try to come to the meetings
and help out with the planning and decisions.
The Parade schedule for the Cycle riders has been finalized and will be passed out
shortly. We are planning to go to 14 parades this year. We would like to make a good
showing at each one of them. Please plan to make as many of them as you possibly
can. We would like to have more cycle riders, you don’t have to own a cycle, just join
the unit and find a cycle owner who is not going to ride in a particular parade and see
if you can ride their cycle. You will need to purchase a uniform.
April Temple Meeting Notes
BY STEVE DOWDY; PHOTOS BY CLAYTON RILEY
Illustrious Sir B. J. Richardson called the
April, 2011, meeting to order at 7:34 PM in
the Frank S. Land Ballroom.
High Priest & Prophet Wayne Spencer
from jeopardy.”
Oriental Guide Maurice Camerlynck
Meet income shows slightly higher net income
than last year. All in all, the Treasurer’s
Report shows that we are still solvent. Almost
all revenue streams are up for the quarter, and
most expenses are down.
The restaurant reported a 1st Quarter
loss. Salaries are down about 10%, but other
factors resulted in a loss.
Illustrious Sir Kevin Sleyster, P.P., made
donations to the General Fund and the Distressed
Nobles Fund.
Noble Ian Ramage donated the profit
from his Swap Meet concession stand to the
No visitors were registered.
Illustrious Sir B. J. talked about his upcoming
trip to Yellowstone and the Dakotas.
This will be a ten-day trip on a luxury bus
through some of the most beautiful scenery in
this beautiful country.
Chief Rabban Richard Floyd gave a
short pep talk about Circus 2011, and announced
that Circus Pins are still available.
Three Units have each raised over $1,000 for
the 2011 Circus. Posters for fund raising are
now available.
High Priest and Prophet Wayne Spencer
that he would also serve as Chairman for the
Potentate’s Golf Outing on September 26.
Hole sponsors are needed for the Wings of
Mercy Tournament. Hole sponsorships are
$100.00 and event Sponsorships are $300.00.
Bingo Chairman Noble Buck Johnson
reported that the Bingo Committee had some
money, spent some money, and donated some
of what was left.
Noble Bert Torrey reported for the Hospital
Committee and spoke about the Blood
Drive on May 11. Please remember Southwest
Airlines when planning your next trip.
Membership Chairman Rod McGrath
told us that excitement over Shrine membership
is building in the Blue Lodges. We have
lots of new Masons. Go to your lodge and
help build more excitement! Last month, we
Monkey Experiment
By Rod McGrath
Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a
string from the top and then you place a set of stairs under the banana. Before long
a monkey will go to the stairs and climb toward the banana.
As soon as he touches the stairs, you spray all the other monkeys with cold water.
In Loving Memory of Walter L. Dougherty
4/24/1919 – 4-01-2010 Springfield, MA
He Will Be Missed Dearly By the Croft Family
After a while another monkey makes an attempt with the same result. Pretty soon when
another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.
Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey
sees the banana and attempts to climb the stairs. To his shock, all of the other monkeys
beat him up. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs
Next, remove another of the original five monkeys, replacing it with a new one. The
newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the
Then, replace a third original monkey with a new one, followed by a fourth, then
the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs he is attacked. Most of the
monkeys that are beating him up have no idea why they were not permitted to climb
the stairs. Neither do they know why they are participating in the beating of the newest
Finally, having replaced all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys
will have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, none of the monkeys will try
Why, you ask? Because in their minds... that is the way it has always been!
The experiment appears to be true. No Shriners or monkeys were injured during this
Flouride Is Just For Kids – NOT!
William J. Donahue, DDS, FAGD, FICDR
Introduction of Fluoride, in miniscule amounts of .7
to 1 part per million, in public water supplies has
been touted by the National Institutes for Health, as
the biggest public health victory of the twentieth century.
While there are some who still object to fluoride
as “toxic,” there has never been any subject that has
been as thoroughly researched. Every research study,
no matter where in the world it was conducted, has
never found any toxicity with fluoride used in the miniscule
levels that are found in fluoridated water supplies.
Every research study has concluded that fluoride
has reduced the amount of dental decay, with some of
the studies even finding that fluoridated water supplies
have reduced decay by as much as 80%, as fluoride is
incorporated into the tooth enamel of developing teeth,
resulting in harder and more resistant enamel. Fluoride
isn’t a panacea by itself, however. All the studies
have also shown that without proper home care and
routine preventive dental care, decay rates remain very
high. There is a small problem with fluoride and it limits
the amount that can be used in water supplies and
incorporated into tooth enamel. Research has shown
that the higher the concentration of fluoride, the better
protection against dental decay. If fluoride levels are
increased to more than about 1 part per million, however,
the incorporation into the enamel of still developing
teeth in very young children, results in white to yellowish
spots on the teeth called mottling. They are better
protected, but no longer pretty. Because of this, recent
recommendations suggest limits of .7 parts per million
in public drinking water supplies.
Once the teeth have fully developed, however,
additional fluoride can be applied topically to increase
protection, and is taken up universally without any
mottling or spotting of teeth. Higher concentrations of
fluoride have become routine during every preventive
dental appointment (cleaning,) and it is almost considered
malpractice not to use topical fluorides. The
problem is that these higher concentrated applications
of fluoride are not permanently incorporated into the
teeth, and begin to leach out of the teeth soon after application.
Protection can only be maintained by reapplying
the topical fluorides during each cleaning appointment.
Somewhere along the way, though, the fallacy
crept in that topical fluorides should only be used on
children. This could not be further from the truth. In
fact, older adults benefit from topical treatments even
more than the kids do. This myth rates right up there
with the myth that everyone needs a cleaning every
six months, and the cause of both myths is the same.
Cleaning appointment frequency should be determined
by the dentist based on the past history, current oral
home care, medical complications, etc., for each individual
patient. For young and healthy patients with
good home care, cleanings may only be needed once a
year. For older patients, medically compromised patients,
and patients with poor home care, cleanings may
be needed every three months or even sooner. But insurance
companies have decided that they will only pay
for the cleanings every six months, so regardless of the
actual need, people believe that they need their teeth
cleaned every six months. The same is true for topical
fluorides. Insurance companies have decided that they
will only pay for topical fluoride on children under 14 or
15, so the belief has become that since insurance won’t
pay for it, it isn’t needed on anyone older than that, even
though all of the research shows otherwise.
Today we are all living longer, and becoming “long
in the tooth” due to gum recession as we get older. We
have more of the root surfaces of the teeth exposed as
we get older and the gum tissue recedes. These exposed
roots are 700 times more susceptible to dental decay than
the enamel of the tooth, and many dentists state that because
of materials and restorative techniques available,
any decay on the root surface is considered the beginning
of the end for the tooth, no matter how skilled the
dentist restoring the decay is. Because of this, you can
see that topical application of fluoride for protection is
most important for adults, even more so than for children.
But since insurance companies won’t pay for it,
the perception is that it isn’t needed for adults. Unfortunately,
many dentists do not keep up with current research
or are tired of recommending needed treatment
which patients reject because insurance won’t pay for it.
What is sad is that topical fluoride application is NOT
expensive. It never ceases to amaze me that insurance
companies refuse to pay $20-$30 for topical fluoride to
protect the teeth, but will spend thousands of dollars to
restore, remove and replace teeth that could have been
prevented with the small expenditure for the protection
of fluoride. All of the research is there.
If you are not receiving topical fluoride treatments
as part of your preventive dentistry visit, talk to your
dentist about it. Even though you will probably have to
pay for it yourself, you now understand why it is so important
in preventing time loss, pain, and hassles in the
future. Think of it as insurance to prevent problems
that will certainly develop down the road without it.
Lafayette County Shrine Club
By Ron Elling, Scribe
The Lafayette County Shrine Club met April 14 at The Victorian Peddlar in Lexington. There
were 17 Lafayette County Shriners and Ladies present for the meal. President Delmar Dothage
welcomed Chief Rabban Richard Floyd and his Lady Linda, Ambassador Curt Karnes and his
Lady Susan, and our former Ambassador Kenny Sisemore.
President Dothage presided at the meeting. The reading of the minutes from the March meeting
was read by W.N. Gray, Secretary. The Treasurer’s Report was also given. President Dothage
reported the Mardi Gras Party and Swap Meet were successful events. He encouraged all members
to purchase their Circus Mom & Dad pins to support children to attend the Circus. He also reminded
members of the upcoming parades that the Shriners will participate in. He also praised all the Shriners
Ladies with the support they give to the Shriners.
Ambassador Curt Karnes covered events that will be held in the upcoming months. A Gun and
Knife Show will be held in June. More details can be found in the Ararat Shrine News. Membership
is still an active topic with everyone being encouraged to think of new members in their Lodges who
would be eligible to join the Ararat Shrine.
Chief Rabban Richard Floyd thanked everyone who helped at the Swap Meet and also mentioned
that the food was great! He gave statistical details from the event noting that approximately
4,500 people attended and over 1,900 cars were parked. He noted that the Onions will be available
the first weekend in May. He recently attended the CSSA Midwinter Meeting and gave a report
about the hospitals indicating that Imperial doesn’t want to close any hospitals, but would like to
partner with teaching hospitals to save money. He also announced the next four Central States. The
2011 event will be held in Overland Park, KS; while the 2012 will be in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; with
the 2013 one to be held in Branson, Missouri; and the 2014 event will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Chief Rabban and his Lady Linda showed items that were available to be purchased to
support the Ararat Circus. Some of the circus novelties were given out in a drawing. Lucky winners
included Gwen Trumbo, Robin Miller, Susan Karnes, Thelma Dye and Wilma Sellers.
Pipes and Drums
By John Hall
Well, March is over and Pipes and Drums raised money for
the Circus at the Lawrence, Kansas St. Patrick’s Day Parade
and piped in the Potentate at the Potentate’s Ball.
Gary is still in limited action but hopefully he will be back at full
speed soon.
At our April meeting, Director Gary Mosby presented Life Membership
in Pipes and Drums to Past Potentates Paul Black and Ben
Kenney. Also at the meeting Gary was presented the Jamie Womelduff
Award. This award is given annually to the person who gives
outstanding service to the unit for that year.
James Stout will be our Secretary for the rest of the year as Mike
Allen has moved up to Treasurer on the Divan after being elected at
the last meeting of Ararat Shrine.
Watch your newsletters for up and coming events at CSSA. The
Pipes and Drums are planning to put on the Highlander Degree at this
years’ CSSA in Overland Park, Kansas. The time and location will be
determined later.
As always, if you need a piper or pipe band for any special event
you can call band manager Gary Mosby at Ararat Shrine.
Provost News
By Bill Huffman, Scribe
In this issue I would like to highlight our
Provost President, Noble Bob Zolotor.
He was at work when we visited. That
turned out to be a 12 hour day. Bobby Z, as
he is known to many at the Temple, shared
some thoughts about plans for 2011, and
all the while I could hear voices in the
background asking for his help. His plan
was to write that evening, but a 12 hour
day at work can slow you down. The next
evening he e-mailed and I wasn’t amazed,
but amused a little, because he had worked
that 12 hour day, and apologized for the
late response.
His Top Line Signer was Past Illustrious
Sir Ben Kenney, and he was involved
with the Provost from day one. Imagine
that. Among other things, our Provost
President is the Time Keeper, keeping tabs
on the hours worked by everyone in our
club. This includes the Temple, OIC of
Outside Events, such as the Circus, Swap
Meet, and Music Fest. In Bobby Z’s own
words, “and all the other wonderful, fun
things that Provost is involved in away
from the Temple.”
The 2011 Line of Officers is as follows:
Nobles Chuck DeGroff, Provost
Leawood Shrine Club
In Memory
Dennis R. Early
Dennis Early passed away April 5,
2011. He was a long time member of
the Provost Club and Shooting Team,
and was a past CSSA Trap Shooting
Champion and also Top Gun. He was
always available to assist new shooters
to the sport. Dennis sponsored and
coached the Lee’s Summit High School
Trap Team, taking them to nine Missouri
State Championships, and one ATA
Championship. Dennis will be missed
by all who he competed with. REST IN
PEACE BROTHER.
Marshal; Waco Dohn, Assistant Provost
Marshal; President, Bob Zolotor; Vice
President, Robert Williams; Treasurer,
Neil Cowan; Sgt. at Arms, Ron Facklam;
and Secretary, Paul Brewer “Old Faithful.”
The Provost Team has BIG plans and
BIG needs for 2011, so please attend the
meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each
month. Plans are in the making for the annual
Picnic, so support from all is important.
Have a Lady that would like to be
active; the Provost Ladies meet on the
same nights. Write with any news or
suggestions for this column to billhuffman01@comcast.net.
Until next time,
God Bless.
By R W Thompson, President • (816-452-7281)
The Leawood Shrine Club invites all Shriners and Widows of Shriners to join us at
our monthly breakfast/luncheon meeting starting at 11:30 a.m. on the fourth Saturday.
Our next meeting is May 28, the last day of our Rodeo. For June we are
asking each member or prospective member to attend the Cajun Party as a substitute
for our usual annual picnic. The Cajun Party Committee includes some dual members
and Illustrious Sir David Gordon is one of several from Ararat. The Abdallah Temple
has tickets available at $20 per person. This June 25th event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. and
your ticket price includes food, libation, and live music. The best way to ensure your
reservation is to buy your tickets in advance. We will make an effort to reserve table(s)
space at for the Leawood Shrine Club. Tell them when you buy your tickets.
We are dark in July and August each year. Our Christmas Party is still in the planning
stage for early December. Now for the good news: In April we doubled the number
of Ararat members in the Leawood Shrine Club. A special thank you goes to the
Williams’ for their support. .
Most of our members are buying/selling the Abdallah Cash Calendars issued to
our Club for sale. As of May 1st the remaining cash prizes total $10,175. Those who
think it is too late to pay $25 for a raffle calendar are missing out. Delays only bypass
winning opportunities. By the by, these are great for gifts. One gift won a cash prize
and was paid forward by purchasing another calendar with the $25 winnings.
We look forward to the continuation of great fellowship and many pleasantries
at our next meeting May 28th and it is open to all Shriners and Widows of Shriners.
(Open Club membership for Abdallah and Ararat Shriners @ $10 annually and all
Shriners Widows are gratis members. Meetings are held on the fourth Saturday at the
Pegah’s Family Restaurant; 11005 Johnson Dr. – Shawnee, KS starting at 11:30 a.m.
Breakfasts or Luncheons are ordered from the menu and served during the meeting.)
Our scheduled meetings for the balance of 2011 were published in the March issue.
We welcome all guests and our friends from both Ararat and Abdallah. Please call
Dillard Whitlow at 913-381-7485 if you wish to let us know in advance that you are
planning to attend. Thank you for reading our submission.
Mini Model T’s
By Stephen Hargrave, Scribe
The parade season is finally here. All of the Mini T’ers are looking forward to
having fun in the upcoming parades. We plan to hit the streets in force this year.
We even plan on having an extra T or two at the parades so those of you that
have yet to decide if you want to drive one or not can give it a try. If you think that you
would like to drive a T at one of the parades, call Jared Hargrave or James Blackburn
to set up the trial. You know what they say, the more the merrier. Of course we need
all of the members of the unit to show up for the parades. All but two of them are call
out events.
As a result of the April membership meeting, we are going to cancel the yearly
work day in April. This year on the 25th we are going to let the ladies take a break
from all of the cooking and cleaning up after the meal and take them out. Some of the
details were still being worked out as of this writing, but we are meeting at the Ararat
Restaurant for an evening of dining and camaraderie.
Just like everyone else, we are looking for some Shriners to fill the cars that we
have that do not have drivers. If you would like drive in the parade instead of walking
or having to look for a ride, call our president or director and set up a date to come to
one of our meetings and get to know us. You will find that we are a fun loving group
that welcomes the ladies and children. If you don’t belong to a unit, find out what it is
like to belong to a group that cares for one another.
Our next stated meeting will be at the temple on Wednesday, May 4th. We meet in
one of the meeting rooms upstairs, and get started at 7:00 PM. That gives you plenty of
time to eat at the restaurant before the meeting. I hope to see you all there.
Amateur Radio Club
By Ronald Nutter, Scribe
By the time you will be reading this,
Hambash 2011 will have come and
gone. Everyone in the Amateur
Radio Club has been working for several
months to make this a success that I know
it will be. That included a field trip to a
nearby Hamfest to see about lining up additional
vendors. On behalf of the Amateur
Radio Club, I would like to thank
those in the Provost that stayed late on
Friday while we got all the tables set up
and helped open up Ararat early on Saturday
so Hambash 2011 was enjoyable for
all that came and enjoyed. I will also recognize
others that helped in the June column
since at the time I am writing this we
are putting the final touches in place for a
successful Hambash. To help those who
will be coming to Hambash that have a
problem with making the walk from the
parking lot to where we will be holding
that day’s festivities, we will have our
cart out to help in ferrying those from
where they parked to where the toys are
(for non-hams, this is how we refer to the
pieces/parts/goodies and other things that
cash will be parted with to take home).
We would also like to thank the Transporters
for bringing by one of their carts
to help us with our taxi service.
Just a few weeks before Hambash,
an announcement of a possible decision
came out that stands to make another
change to Amateur Radio that doesn’t
appear to be in the best interest of the
hobby. Many years ago, the FCC came in
and took part of what we know as the 220
Mhz range that had been assigned to Amateur
Radio for many years and gave it
to UPS for use by them nationally. With
change in technology that occurred in the
years since that change was made, I can’t
find that those frequencies are being used
by UPS. We recently found that another
attempt to take some of our frequencies
in the 440 Mhz range away from us is underway.
A printer and computer will be
present at Hambash which will be used
to print a letter that every individual can
sign that will be delivered to the appropriate
elected officials in Washington by
representatives of the ARRL (American
Radio Relay League) a national organization
of Amateur Radio Operators. We
hope to be able to preserve these frequencies.
Only time will tell how successful
this process will be.
If you are a new or existing Noble
that has an Amateur Radio license or has
thought about getting one, I hope that you
will have been able to stop by Hambash
and learn more about this very interesting
hobby. Please seek out anyone from the
club and we will be glad to talk to you
as well as help getting the process started
for your getting your license. Even if you
don’t currently hold a ticket (Ham slang
for Amateur Radio License), you will find
other goodies at Hambash to take home
with you.
Oriental Band
By Hank W. Koontz, President
Greetings from the members of the Oriental Band.
Our practices have been going good. Our newest
member “Tut” has almost mastered his musette
and is now trying to keep up with the fast and furious
drum section. (We miss you Tommy). We are all trying
hard to get ready for our first parades in Missouri City and
Richmond. We are also gearing up for our Spring Ceremonial.
Besides our normal walk on at the Ceremonial playing
our sweet music, we will be having a booth to interest
our newest members to come and enjoy in our fun.
We have talked with Abdallah’s Oriental Band and
are coordinating practices together. Besides meeting new
friends and fellow nobles, we will both enjoy our music
and fun. Isn’t that what an Oriental Band is about? Although
our number of active members is small our enthusiasm
is huge! We have many former members who have
stopped coming to our practices and meetings. I understand
how hard it is to show up and be active, as the last
4 years I’ve had 6 major operations, tons of doctor visits,
and months of therapy. But I still tried to attend meetings
if I could. Lucky for me my body is letting me be active
with the Band and the chance to be President this year. We
cannot let the Band get down to nothing! Come back to
our practices and meetings. Don’t let your tempers prevent
you from abandoning your Temple or your Band. Call me
(816-520-0183) and let’s discuss what keeps you away.
You have made many friends at Ararat and in the O.B.
We miss you and want you back even if you can’t parade
or practice. Come to the monthly O.B. Business Meeting
and be among friends. Remember why you became a Shriner
and a part of our Band. Remember the fun you had
through the years.
We have a new Fantasy Tune for CSSA that we are
trying to learn. We need our Mystro back as he has kept us
playing our sweet music for many years.
Enough of my whining. All I can say is, we need
you and the “Kids” need you. Hopefully we will see you
soon. Until then keep the musettes howling and the drums
pounding.
Northland Shrine Club News
By Bobbie White, President
Hello Nobles and Ladies. If you are
a Northlander we need YOU. We
are a great bunch of guys with a
WONDERFUL wives group who meet
once a month for Good Food and Fellowship.
On April 7th we had our regular
meeting at the VFW in Claycomo (right
there beside Stroud’s). We started the
evening with a busy social hour and then
had an excellent Baked Ham dinner with
cheesy scalloped potatoes, Masonic green
beans, several salads and dessert. Wow,
what a feast. Next month we are gonna
have Fried Chicken, always a crowd
pleaser. I also have to say that it was truly
a fantastic sight to see everyone there. I
love it when the folks from the VFW have
to come out and set more place settings as
they did again this month.
Prior to dinner Noble Dave
McLaughlin led us in the Pledge of Allegiance
and then Noble Bert Torrey led
us in prayer. Thanks Guys.
President White opened the meeting
at 7:15 PM with introductions: Ambassador
Shaun Robinson and his Lady Kayla
– nice to see you two again; Assistant
Shrine Club Director Art Kinder (minus
his bride Janet who was doing her duty
as an election judge); and Chief Rabban
Richard Floyd and his always delightful
Lady Linda.
Our own hard working lady Mrs.
Hoesly was there to do her magic with
the drawing for a gas card. Thanks for all
your work on that project and congratulations
to our lucky winner, Beverly Cunliffe-Owen.
Our ladies then slipped off to their
own meeting.
Our main business for the night was
regarding the Float and getting ready
for the new year of parades. The truck
and float are both in the garage for some
needed repair but will be ready to roll for
the Richmond Parade. We really need
your help so come on out to Richmond
and let’s have a good showing. We were
notified we won 15th Place in the Snake
Saturday Parade. Thanks Howard for all
your work on the truck and the Float.
Membership Chair Pat gave us something
to think about with his notes from the
Membership meeting, and we need a couple
of volunteers for the Ceremonial on
May 20th & 21st. Please call President
Bobbie or Member Chair Pat if you can
help one of those days. We will have the
float out as long as the weather allows.
Quartermaster Ron says he has shirts,
caps and coats. If you need one just see
him at the next meeting.
Our Ladies returned to the meeting
and broached a fundraiser to us.
They want to sponsor a garage sale. The
Hoesly’s have volunteered their lawn and
maybe good ole Bob Duncan’s during
their neighborhood association wide sale
in late May or early June (we should have
the exact date at the next meeting). If you
have something you can donate to the
sale please contact the Hoesly’s so we can
make sure it is there the day of the sale.
Thanks to ALL who were there.
Membership: We truly miss not seeing
many of our old friends from the club.
If you haven’t been to a meeting in a
while come on back and see us. We miss
your company and need you to keep our
club active and functional.
In Sickness this month we ask for
prayers for Barb Newman who is to have
surgery soon. Our best wishes for you and
hope to see you soon.
Ambassador Robinson and Assistant
Director Kinder both had words of wisdom
for us and reminded us of upcoming
events (Swap Meet, Richmond Parade,
Spring Ceremonial for a few). Thanks
Gentlemen.
We then had the pleasure of a discussion
with Chief Rabban Floyd on the
upcoming Circus and the Circus Ads.
We look forward to another great year.
Thanks Sir.
Speaking of Parades and Circus
don’t forget that the uniform has changed
and we are wearing our red shirts with
navy blue pants. If you don’t have your
shirt yet let us know so we can get with
our Quartermaster (Ron Owen) and get
one for you.
Noble President White also asks
if you can please make it to the Temple
Meetings and wear your Northland Shirt
or Fez.
Again, if you want some good food
and want to meet some good people
come on by our next meeting, May 3rd
at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us
for dinner before the meeting and visit
with old and new friends. Hope to see
you there!!!
Transporters
By Ronald Nutter, Scribe
I
am writing this in the hours following the highly successful Car/Motorcycle Swap
Meet that was held on April 9th and 10th. As a new Noble, I was impressed with the
level of organization that I saw that had to be there for everything to come off to the
level that it did. The Transporters were there in force to help.
I took the day off from work on Friday the 8th to help however I could with the
setup. I started out that morning after getting my Transporters Golf Cart off my trailer
and assembled, by helping get the barrels that helped mark all the rows and doubled
as trash barrels. Once that was done, it was time to begin working as a Spotter. Those
of us with carts stood in something like a Taxi cab line waiting for the vendors as they
arrived for check-in. We would be given the toe tags indicating the spot or spots that
the vendor had paid for. Each toe tag was tied to a rubber block that was put over each
spot that the vendor would be using. A quick review was given for first time vendors
or those who hadn’t been there for a while to make sure they knew the lines they had
to stay within.
Friday came and went quicker than I expected. On Saturday morning, it was all
hands on deck starting at 5 am to get ready for arrival of vendors that hadn’t arrived
on Friday and the steady stream of patrons looking for that hard to find part that they
hadn’t been able to find elsewhere or that next project to start working on. Starting
around 9am, we had a steady stream of patrons that lasted well after 2 pm before
things lightened up. Just after lunch, we managed to fill all of the parking lots available
to us. If that wasn’t enough, imagine the picture of full parking lots, only to have two
school buses arrive with even more attendees. The rain the night before made things
a little messy but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of those streaming in the gates.
Sunday morning was a little quieter. Several of the vendors sold out early on Saturday
afternoon and had left but quite a few were still present. The level of purchasing
didn’t seem to drop much as I noticed several repeat trips from the vendor area to the
parking lots by more than one person.
If you are a new Noble or one that hasn’t helped with the Auto/Motorcycle Swap
Meet before, this is not an experience to be missed. Don’t worry about having to sign
up in advance to help, just show up and the work will find you. At one point Friday, I
helped Captain Ron from the Provost ferry the Patrol car and the EMT cart from the
Shrine to the Swap Meet. Hope to see you at the next Swap Meet in September!
Ararat Needle Guild
By Jerri Dowdy
Every child who is an in-patient and at a Shrine Hospital for any length of time is
given a quilt to take home. We make many of these quilts each year to send to
the hospitals. The quilts require special fabrics that we must purchase, plus all the
other fabric, thread, patterns, etc. to be used in making the articles.
Our funds are low after purchasing all of these items plus other necessary materials.
We would be happy to receive donations from your club or unit. We need your help
to keep sewing for the kids.
Please come join us at Needle Guild. We need all the help we can get to make as
many items as possible to send for the children. We sew, visit, and visit, make new
friends and have lunch at each meeting. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium each month except July and August.
Even if you can’t sew, there are things you can do. You can cut hose for Raggedy Ann
and Andy, stuff Raggedy Ann and Andy, make embroidered quilt blocks, cut out fabric
to be sewn, etc.
20 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS MAY 2011

Blue Springs Shrine Club
By Fred Harle P.P.
Wow, how time flies! I can still remember the blizzard we had just a couple of months ago, now
here it is almost spring. I know that’s so because the birds are chasing one another. I wonder
why?? I just saw several new bunny rabbits hopping around our ponderosa, and the trees are
spreading out new leaves that we will have to rake. Have you noticed all the pretty new flowers that are in
bloom? Well now, isn’t all that sure signs that summer is just around the corner, so I’m going to get out the
lawn chairs, fire up the barbeque grill, put my feet up and just let it all happen.
Now for some tidbits in and about our super Blue Springs Shrine Club.
Our last meeting held on March 28th at the American Legion Hall was really a barn burner. Our handsome
President, Noble Bill Fickle was at the helm and we got off to a rip-roarin start with the usual opening
ceremonies, you know, the pledge to our flag, and our super prelate getting us all off on the right foot. That
is our Noble Don Meinsen doing a tremendous prayer while remembering our three loyal members who
passed on to heaven this past year, Nobles Floyd VanDolah, Victor Walters and Willie Snell. Their presence
is remembered and greatly missed among us.
As usual all of us present were treated to a scrumptious, delightful, tasteful dinner prepared by our gals
and the entrée by our President Bill Fickle, owner of Side Pockets in Blue Springs. Man oh man; you don’t
eat any better anywhere, even at the Golden Corral or the Hometown Buffet. Now that ought to give you an
idea of what you are in for when you visit our Blue Springs Shrine Club.
Noble Phil Wendt, recovering from recent surgery, has volunteered to keep track of Onion Sales for the
club. He knows about computers.
Our good buddy Noble Gerald White is reported to be under the weather, so we are hoping he gets better
fast.
I happened to meet Noble Bob and Lady Roberta Hunsperger the other day at Walmart and Lady Roberta
said she has some good days and some not quite so good. All of us at your Shrine Club wish for you to
hurry up and get to feeling on top again.
Our good buddy Noble Bud Higginbotham was with us minus Lady Carol; seems as though they had
both just returned from Hawaii and still were suffering from jet lag.
He told us about the Crappie Tourney April 23rd in Warsaw and the start of parade season May 7th in
Missouri City, then on to the big city of Richmond, MO where they have their Annual Mushroom Festival.
This is a super Festival you don’t want to miss.
Our featured speaker of the evening was the Chief of Police from Blue Springs, along with Mr. Tom
Echerd, Chairman Public Safety Board. Both gentlemen spoke about the forthcoming public safety sales tax
on the ballot coming up. Now that the election for the tax has passed, we are pleased to note that it passed
with flying colors.
Our club is going on an outing April 17 to visit the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City.
Then in July we are taking in a Royals game. Why don’t you make plans to join us for the Royals game?
Come see for yourself how we operate and what a fun bunch of Shriners we are.
I’m going to quit for this time. Remember; get off the couch, away from the “Boob Tube” and “Take me
out to the old ball game.”
Antique Auto Club
BY THE PHANTOM
Our March meeting was held on March 29th at 7:30 p.m.
at the Temple. There were 12 members attending.
The April Social was on the 12th at El Jinette at 40
& 291 Hwy. The May Social will be at Longhorn Steakhouse
either in Liberty or on Barry Rd. The June Social will be at RC’s
in Martin City. Members are encouraged to come. It’s a great
time for excellent food and outstanding fellowship. Mark it on
your calendar!
The Dust-Off was held April 30th. The Club toured the
Downtown Airport Museum and then ate at Paul & Jack’s in
NKC.
The upcoming Edgerton parade and picnic were discussed,
but no final decision was reached.
By now the April Swap Meet is history. We had a good
showing from our club working at the Swap Meet. Our club’s
fundraiser had good support, and profit was made selling donated
items. Thanks to all who participated. Job well done.
It appears all the snowbirds are back in town. Looking forward
to seeing them at future events.
Greeter News
By Daryl Krause
It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter” at the Ararat’s Swap Meet. Director Chuck and
President Doug brought out the really big guns (Greeters) this spring to make sure every car possible
was squeezed into the parking spaces available. George, Jim and Jack made sure every time we had a
break we returned refreshed and ready to carry on the task at hand.
The Greeter float looked grand making this year’s maiden voyage back and forth carrying the customers
into the Swap Meet. The only thing that would have made it look better would be seeing Larry
Jobe back at the helm. Thanks Ralph, Marvin and Gary for insuring the rider’s safety.
You can’t talk about Greeter’s at the Spring Swap Meet without taking note of Ian and LeAnn Ramage’s
“Hot Rod Café” and all the ladies that worked it. All though the weather was great they had the Tornadoes
(Spud on a Stick) flying out of the fryers. If you did not start your morning off with their Biscuits
N’ Gravy then your taste buds missed out big time. And the melt-in-your-mouth Pulled Pork Sandwiches
were a hit with all who had them. But the biggest kicker of it all is “They are Donating all the Proceeds
Back To Ararat”.
Yes, it was a great day with the weather and all Ararat Nobles that took part got their first chance
since winter to get out and visit with other Nobles. The work at times might have been hard and problems
did pop up, but overall each and every Noble, no matter what Unit or Club they represented, put a smile
on and made Ararat shine.
Ole Cars
By Dick Lewis, Scribe
Our April meeting was held at the
Temple on Monday, April 4th with
all officers and 12 members present.
Several of us enjoyed dinner in the
Ararat Club before the meeting. We were
honored to have our Liaison Officer, First
Ceremonial Master Clarence Kirby with
us. He enlightened us on all important
events including the Spring Ceremonial.
We welcome back our Past Director Noble
Harold (Dub) and Lady Eunice Doubledee
who had just returned after spending the
winter at their winter home in Florida.
We were saddened to hear of our
departed charter member Noble Quincy
(Deacon) Huddleston. Noble Deacon
passed away on March 9th. Services
were held on Saturday, March 12th at
Park Lawn Funeral Home. He was a 67
year member of Sheffield Masonic Lodge
No. 625 and a 66 year member of Ararat
Shrine. He was also a charter member of
our Ole Car Unit and was Chairman of our
Calling Committee for several years. He
was the husband of Lady Eleanore Huddleston
and grandfather of our member,
Noble David Huddleston. Our condolences
are extended to Lady Eleanore, David
and family members.
Our March social dinner was held on
Monday, March 14th at the Salty Iguana
on 40 Hwy, with 20 members and Ladies
attending. Everyone enjoyed the delicious
food and services.
We thank all those members who
worked the recent car auction and a special
thank you to all of our many friends
and nobles who helped us. We also thank
our Past Director and Past Potentate, Ill.
Sir Noble Don and Lady Opal Price for the
sandwiches that they prepared for us and
enjoyed by all of the drivers.
We are sorry to report that our Lady
Marj Langford was slightly injured while
attending the Potentate’s Ball and has now
recovered.
In this issue we highlight the beautiful
1937 Chevrolet coupe pictured below
and owned by our member, Noble Vern
Hall. Noble Vern has just recently finished
restoring this vehicle. It is equipped
with a small block LS1 V/8 Chevy crate
engine, a 4L60 automatic transmission,
air conditioning, power brakes, windows,
steering, air ride suspension and 4-wheel
disc brakes. The color is sports red. He
is also the proud owner of a 1938 Ford
coupe.
