Coach Billy Boykin's thoughts on
the 2013 season:
We are a very young team; one of the
youngest teams in the country. We had
a number of sophomores and we have
added some freshmen. We have a group
that is predominately underclassmen.
Look at the view we had last year. We
were undefeated in the A10 record
season play. We were the number one
seat in the A10 tournament. We had a
win over the defending champs at their
place during the season. We lost at the
semi finals at the tournament. Look at
the group that we return; we have 4
kids returning who were named in all
conference teams. I think we have a
good young nucleus to build around.
Take some of last year’s momentum and
keep moving forward. That said we’ve
also added some new faces that are talented that can help us from a production standpoint. When you have a
young group you do lean heavily, even if you don’t have many, on your older kids; your seniors, juniors, your
upperclassmen. So this year looking at the upperclassmen; they have been terrific. We are going to need to lean
on them again heavily because we still are a young group. But we are still learning. I’m excited about the future.
The next couple years I think the outlook is good.
BILLY
BOYKIN
Head Coach
3rd Season
Davidson, 2001
In the summer in 2010, a national search to find Charlotte's 16th head men's tennis coach led the 49ers to points
far and wide before choosing a familiar candidate with conference ties in Billy Boykin. Boykin came to Charlotte from Atlantic
10 Conference foe Richmond, where he had been the head coach for two years.
In his first season at Charlotte in 2011, Boykin led the 49ers to a fifth-place finish at the conference championships
and an 8-16 inaugural campign, placing a pair of student-athletes on the All-Conference lists.
In 2012, Boykin guided the team to a 15-8 overall record and an undefeated season in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
For the second time in school history, Charlotte earned top seed in the conference tournament. They tied for third in the
tournament and placed a school record of four student-athletes on the All-Atlantic 10 team.
Billy, the son of former head coach, Jim Boykin, who retired after 17 seasons,
came to Charlotte in the midst of a tennis renaissance, as the 49ers unveiled
the brand-new, state-of-the-art Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in 2012, featuring
office space, locker rooms, conference space, box seating a team lounge and a
training room.
"Billy brings a wealth of experience both as a highly rated collegiate player
and as an experienced coach within our conference," said Director of Athletics
Judy Rose.
Boykin inherited a Richmond team that had come off of back-to-back fivewin
seasons before taking the Spiders to 12 matches in his second season in 2010,
its biggest total since 2005. The 2010 Spider team had the A-10 Most Outstanding
Rookie Performer, Sebastien Fauchet, giving the team its first such honoree since its
first year of A-10 membership in 2001. A lot of that team's success can be traced
to Coach Boykin's recruiting class, which was ranked the 18th-best nationally for
a mid-major school by tennisrecruiting.net that season.
Prior to Richmond, Boykin was the men's and women's assistant coach
at the College of Charleston. He was involved with all phases of the Cougars'
nationally ranked tennis programs. Before Charleston, Boykin served for one year
as the assistant coach at his alma mater, Davidson College.
A native of Charlotte, Boykin received a B.A. in political science from
Davidson in 2001. Coming out of high school, Boykin was the United States Tennis
Association's #1 ranked junior player in the state of North Carolina and earned
Davidson College's Dalton McMichael Scholarship for excellence in academics and
athletics. While at Davidson College, Boykin served as team captain and finished
undefeated in singles play during Southern Conference regular-season competition
in 1999.
Prior to coaching, Boykin served as a tennis professional at Charlotte's
Olde Providence Racquet Club and worked as a financial analyst for a brokerage
firm in Charlotte, NC.
JESSE
TARR
Assistant Coach
3rd Season
James Madison, 2008
After being named the Charlotte men's tennis assistant in the summer of 2010, Tarr became the choice for the women's tennis assistant in a dual role shortly thereafter.
He enters his third season in his dual role with both programs.
Tarr played an important role in the men's and women's teams combining for the third-best total win percentage across both programs in school history. Both 49er
teams earned byes (the men were the top seed, while the women were seeded second) to the conference tournaments. The men's program earned a record number of
all-conference selections, while the women's program had the school's first ranked doubles pair.
Tarr came to Charlotte after a year as an assistant coach at William and Mary. After a standout career at James Madison, the native of Midlothian, Va., started his coaching
career as a volunteer assistant under Greg Patton at Boise State, which finished No. 20 in the country at the end of the 2009 season.
William and Mary tied the school record with 20 wins in 2010 and clinched the number-one seed in the Colonial Athletic Association for the first time in school history.
The Tribe reached a ranking as high as No. 53 during the year and finished the season ranked No. 75. Three players were named first-team All-CAA in singles and doubles.
Tarr served as the recruiting coordinator for the program, which received votes for the "Top Recruiting Classes" list at tennisrecruiting.net and was ranked No. 6 for
"Top Mid-Major Classes" at the same website. Student-athletes Sebastian Vidal and Keziel Juneau were ranked as high as No. 19 in the nation in doubles, qualified for the
main draw at the ITA All-American Championships and also qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships. Juneau was the Atlantic Region winner of the Arthur Ashe
Sportsmanship and Leadership Award and the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award.
Tarr's season at Boise State culminated in a NCAA Round of 16 appearance and a record of 24-9 in 2009, the second-best mark in school history. Included in the
tournament run was an upset win over regional host and No. 14-seeded Alabama in the second round. The Broncos had three All-WAC singles players and two All-WAC
doubles teams in 2008-09, including the WAC Player of the Year, Clancy Shields, and the Freshman of the Year,
James Meredith. Shields finished the year ranked No. 24 nationally in singles and was named the winner of the ITA National Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award. Meredith
also garnered ITA Mountain Region Rookie of the Year honors.
At JMU, Tarr was a four-year starter, earning 110 total victories (combined singles and doubles) in his playing career and earned five All-CAA honors (four in doubles
and one in singles). As a senior, he was named as a finalist for the James Madison University Athlete of the Year Award. During his junior season, Tarr was ranked No. 15
regionally in doubles for the Mid-East Region with partner Mike Smith. Carrying over to the next year, Tarr and Smith earned a No. 46 national preseason ranking for the
2007-08 doubles campaign.
While a student at James Madison, he started the "Day with the Dukes" event as a way to give back to the community. Each year, Special Olympics athletes interact with a
variety of Dukes athletes for a fun day on campus, including a home football game. Participants receive a tailgate lunch, have the opportunity to interact with football players
at Bridgeforth Stadium, attend clinics with the basketball and soccer teams and one participant flips the coin before the football game. Approximately 60 Special Olympics
athletes attend Day with the Dukes each year, a program that continues after his graduation. The Psychology Peer Advisory Group provides one-on-one buddies for the day.
Also strong in the classroom, Tarr earned a CAA Commissioner's Academic Award in 2006 and 2008 as well as being named an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2006.
Tarr earned his bachelors of science in psychology with a minor in athletic coaching from James Madison in 2008.
First Season
Richmond, 2011
Joining the Charlotte 49ers men's tennis program as a volunteer assistant coach in Spring, 2013 is former Richmond player AJ Nelson. Nelson, who was recruited
to play at Richmond by Billy Boykin, saw time with the Spiders from 2009-11, accumulating 26 singles victories during his three seasons. His first two years at Richmond
were under Boykin's watch after he transferred from another A-10 insitution, Rhode Island, where he went 28-7.
Prior to coming to Charlottte, Nelson spent time working with the River Club in downtown Manhattan, N.Y. and the Metal Club in Southhampton, N.Y.
He graduated fom Richmond in 2011 with a Biology degree. He will also assist the 49ers women's tennis program as a volunteer assistant coach.
JIM
BOYKIN
Volunteer Coach
Former 17-year Head Coach
Appalachian State, 1967
Charlotte former head coach Jim Boykin has over 30 years of professional
tennis teaching under his belt and a total of 451 career wins. After 17 seasons at the
helm of the 49ers men's tennis program, he stepped down to retire, though he still
works closely with the program alongside his son Billy. He amassed 200 wins at a
head coach at Charlotte, the program's all-time winningest coach.
"My father is my best friend. To be able to work with him everyday that’s
definitely super cool. He has so much experience in tennis at every level. If it comes
down to something technical, he’s the best technician of the game I’ve ever seen. He’s
probably most valuable in that he’s been an educator for 45 years and to have his
experience when we have things our players need to learn as they develop as people.
That’s the number one thing he brings to the table. To have that as a volunteer coach
is pretty outstanding. And then obviously his relationship with the guys, they love him.
He enjoys it." Coach Boykin on having his father as Volunteer Coach.
After taking the program to its first-ever conference championship match
in 2006, the Niners again made history, this time by winning the conference championship
for the first time in school history and advancing to the program's first-ever
NCAA Regional Tournament. Boykin was named 2007 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year,
the only Niners coach to wear that honor.
Roy Sichel became the first player in the program's history to earn Conference
Player of the Year, earning that honor twice (2006 & 2007) and Freshman of the
Year (2005) honors as well as the first player to play in the NCAA Singles Tournament
(also doubling that feat in 2006 and 2007.)
Boykin led Charlotte to unprecendented heights. Charlotte was ranked in
the ITA Top 75 for the first time in 2000, finished a season ranked (57th) in 2001 and
started a season ranked in 2002, all program firsts.
Boykin arrived in Charlotte via junior college power Anderson, putting together
a 12-year record of 251-77 and leading the program to two junior college national
championships. He was twice named the National Junior College Coach of the
Year, 1986 and 1987, and also earned South Carolina Coach of the Year and Wilson
Intercollegiate Coach of the Year honors in 1986.
In 1994, he was elected to the National Junior College Athletic Association's
Tennis Hall of Fame. In the spring of 2000, he was elected into the Anderson College
Athletic Hall of Fame.
Boykin was the 1990 head coach of the now defunct Charlotte Heat of
Professional Team Tennis and produced the league's rookie of the year, Trevor "Tank"
Kronermann.
A 1967 graduate of Appalachian State, Boykin earned a B.A. degree in psychology
and served as an assistant coach under Jim Jones. He attended Furman from
1960-63 and was a Southern Conference Singles Champion. He has had appointments
as head tennis professional at Anderson Cardinal Racket Club, Charlotte Olde
Providence Racket Club and Charlotte Country Club.
DR. PHILIP
DUBOIS
UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR
7 years (2005-06 to present)
Tennis
A native of Oakland, California, Philip
L. Dubois attended the University of
California, Davis, where he graduated
in 1972 with an undergraduate degree
in political science, earning election
to the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. He then
earned master’s (1974) and doctoral (1978) degrees in the field from
the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dubois began his academic career in 1976 at the University of
California, Davis. Over the next 15 years, he rose through the faculty
and administrative ranks to full professor and held various administrative
posts, including associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.
In 1991, Dubois was recruited to UNC Charlotte, where he spent
the next six and a half years as provost and vice chancellor for academic
affairs. Dubois was credited with drafting a strategic academic
plan, leading the development of the university’s first comprehensive
campus-wide plan for information technology, and initiating programs
to better serve nontraditional adult students. Under his leadership,
UNC Charlotte also planned and launched its first doctoral programs.
In 1997, Dubois was named president of the University of
Wyoming. In that role, he led the development of comprehensive
academic, support services, and capital construction plans for the
campus; stimulated a growing volume of new capital construction
projects and building renovations; expanded UW’s role in statewide
economic development; and improved the recruitment and retention
of students. During his eight-year tenure, state and federal legislative
support increased significantly, while private gifts to the university
more than quadrupled.
He was honored in 2004 by the Council for Advancement and
Support of Education (CASE) with its District VI Chief Executive
Leadership Award.
On March 18, 2005, Dubois was named UNC Charlotte’s fourth
chancellor and assumed that role on July 15. In his first seven years,
Dubois has focused his efforts on building the University’s visibility and
support in the Charlotte region; long-range planning for an expected
enrollment of 35,000 students; completion of key capital construction
projects (including a major new building located in Center City
Charlotte); improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of critical
business processes; and implementation of an intercollegiate football
program starting in the fall of 2013.
Dr. Dubois and his wife, Lisa Lewis Dubois, have three adult
children: Logan, Taylor, and Ali. They are the first family to occupy
the chancellor’s official campus residence, Bissell House.
NCAA Basketball Tournament rounds to Charlotte.
Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose is one of the most
successful and well-respected Athletics Directors in the nation.
At the time of her appointment in 1990, she was just the third
female to be put in charge of a Division I program. In 1999-2000,
she became the first female to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s
Basketball Committee. She served a five-year term (2000-2004) on
that committee. She also completed a term as 2003-04 President of
the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA)
and was one of less than 70 university presidents and athletics
administrators invited to NCAA President Mark Emmert’s Summer
2011 Retreat.
Chief among her accomplishments with the university is the
systematic growth of the 49ers program. That growth will culminate
with the unveiling of the 49ers football program in 2013.
With the 49ers, she has overseen the 49ers moves from the
Sun Belt Conference to the Metro Conference to Conference USA
and onto the Atlantic 10 in 2005-06. She has overseen the 49ers
growth into a program that is fully-funded at the NCAA level for athletic
scholarships. She has helped develop nearly $50 million worth of
athletic facilities which have enhanced playing venues, academic
services, strength and conditioning programs, training and medical
support to improve the experience of each and every student-athlete.
With the completion of the football stadium that facility figure willl
rise to nearly $100 million.
She has been instrumental in attracting national sporting
events to Charlotte such as the 1994 Men’s Basketball Final Four,
the 1996 Women’s Basketball Final Four, the 1999 and 2000 Men’s
Soccer College Cups as well as a variety of NCAA Men’s Basketball
tournament rounds.
The 49ers have enjoyed similar success in competition and the
classroom. Since Rose became A.D., 14 of the school’s 16 athletic
programs have either won a league title or been represented in NCAA
play, or both. Prior to her stint as A.D., only two programs touted
such success. Meanwhile, the athletic department now boasts a
cumulative GPA of over 3.0 and Charlotte has won eight of the last
14 A-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards.
Along the
way, Rose has
reaped her share
of awards, for professional
success,
contributions to the
community and
leadership.
DIRECTOR

Charlotte
Tennis
On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now
the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What
started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only
affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport
league that is universally hailed as one of the best
conferences in the country.
In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in
navigating the sweeping conference realignment
issues, adding Butler University and Virginia
Commonwealth University, both of which began
full membership on July 1, 2012. The league was
declared the “winner” of conference
realignment by several
media outlets, arguably strengthening
the league to its best-ever
lineup with a record 16 members
institutions. The additions were
part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was
adopted during the 2010-11 academic year.
The 16 member institutions of the A-10 are
united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is
extraordinary in its educational mission, whether
of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land
grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member
prove that there are many threads that weave
the fabric for a great conference.
The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population
of over 82 million people within its geographic
footprint of nine states and the District of Columbia,
will crown champions in 21 sports this year,
including the 16 sponsored by Charlotte: baseball,
men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s
cross country, men’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor
and outdoor track & field, men’s and women’s
soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and
women’s volleyball.
The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10
institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner
Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a
strong commitment to making the academic and
athletics equation a successful one. The Atlantic 10
Conference ranks fourth in number of teams publically
recognized by the NCAA and fifth in overall
Academic Progress Rate (APR) average among all
32 Division I Conferences with a
981 average. In all, 56 institutions
were honored by the NCAA for
outstanding APR scores. The
Commissioner’s Honor Roll,
honoring student-athletes with
a 3.5 grade point average or better, listed 1,359 in
the fall of 2011.
The league sponsors Academic All-Conference
teams in each of its sports and honors one studentathlete
per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete
of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides
four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified
student-athletes. Charlotte’s Macey Ruble captured
the 2012 A-10 Male Student-Athlete of the
Year award, becoming the eighth 49er (of
a possible 14) to win either the Male or
Female award. The Niners swept the pair
of awards in 2010 and 2011. Ruble also
won one of the four league postgraduate
scholarships.
