HALTON-WAGNER TENNIS COMPLEX
Beneath a brilliant
sky and in front of a
crowd of over 150 attendees,
Dale Halton
served an ace on South
Court Number Two as
the Charlotte 49ers officially
dedicated Halton-
Wagner Tennis Complex
April 27, 2012.
The 12,477 square
foot facility includes
coach's offices, a conference
room, a player/
team lounge and the
men's and women's team
locker rooms. The facility
is named in honor of
Dale Halton and Fred
Wagner and their generous support of the 49ers tennis program.
"This is a magnificent facility," said 49ers head men's tennis coach Billy
Boykin. "It's kind of a mesmerizing place. It's kind of like being in a cathedral. It
adds another dimension to our school and our campus. We're eternally grateful
to their generosity and support of 49ers athletics."
The ceremony took place on the courts as the audience sat in the stadiumstyle
seating overlooking the 12 playing surfaces. A framed image of the complex
was presented to Halton and Wagner by UNC Charlotte Chancellor Dr.
Philip Dubois and Director of Athletics Judy Rose.
"It's really hard to wipe the smile off my face every
time I see this facility and every time I enter this
complex," said Rose.
Among those in attendance, in addition to the
current 49ers men's and women's tennis teams, were
a slew of former players, dating all the way back to
the 49ers first men's tennis season of 1963.
During the ceremony, the 49ers saw fit to recognize
two longtime coaches by naming the office
suites in honor of Penny Brawley and Jim Boykin.
The Penny Brawley Women's Tennis Office Suite is
named in honor of the 49ers' all-time winningest
coach, whose career spanned four decades. The Jim
Boykin Men's Tennis Office Suite is named for the alltime
winningest men's coach, who led Charlotte to
its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. Despite
retiring, Jim serves as a volunteer coach on the
current staff for his son, Billy.
The complex sits at the corner
of Cameron Blvd. and Phillips Road,
on campus, and includes a pair of
scoreboards with wireless scoring
capabilities opposite the 246
stadium seats. Statues of both a
men's and women's tennis player,
donated by Carol and Irwin Belk,
adorn the entrance to the facility's
breezeway which leads directly
into the stadium.
"Today's dedication is another
step in the evolution of this institution,"
said UNC Charlotte Chancellor
Dr. Philip Dubois. "It's another
reminder that this institution continues
its expansion and development."
2011-12 Recap/2012-13 Season Outlook
The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis program continued to add to its illustrious history in 2011-12, not only earning
the No. 2 seed at the Atlantic 10 Tournament but also by opening a beautiful new, on-campus facility: Halton-Wagner
Tennis Complex. The new facility is just the latest in an overall boom across campus to showcase 49ers athletic teams.
On the courts, Charlotte earned a 16-6 record as head coach Michaela Gorman surpassed the 100-win plateau, becoming
just the second mentor in program history to accomplish the feat. It marked the third time in her nine seasons
she has guided the squad to 16 wins.
Last spring, the doubles pairing of senior Andrea Rivera and junior Alexandra Zinn became the first duo in program
history to earn a national ranking, landing at No. 48 in the Campbell's/ITA listings for February 20.
This season, eight returners and two newcomers comprise the roster for Gorman's 10th campaign. A quintet of
seniors -- Emmanuelle Briant, Anna Ekelund, Iveta Guneva, Ginny Johnson and Alexandra Zinn -- will be playing its final
season in the green and white. Zinn was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 team a year ago, joining her doubles partner
Rivera and last season's team MVP, sophomore Natsuko Takayanagi.
Charlotte will participate in four fall tournaments, including playing host to the Charlotte 49er Invitational October
12-13, and a pair of dual matches in preparation for the spring campaign. The first full season at the Halton-Wagner Tennis
Complex is on the docket in 2012-13. Nine spring dual matches are slated to be played at the facility, including seven
against Carolinas Region foes and the only Atlantic 10 regular-season contest.
MICHAELA
GORMAN
Head Coach
10th Season
UNC Greensboro, 2000
After capturing her 100th career coaching victory in the fall of 2011, Michaela Gorman, enters her 10th season as head coach at Charlotte, bringing the highest
winning percentage of any coach in program history. She also enjoyed the greatest first five seasons as a head coach in the program's history.
Posting 112 career victories, the second-most of any coach at Charlotte, Gorman, then Michaela Quinn, started her career with the 49ers with four-straight
winning seasons, not previously accomplished since a stretch from the 1985-88 seasons. She also leads the team into a new era, moving the team into the new
Halton-Wagner Complex this past season.
The 49ers posted 16 more victories in 2011-12, the third time in her tenure at Charlotte that a Gorman-led team won 16 matches. The 49ers have recorded more
than 16 wins just three times in program history.
In 2012, Charlotte saw its first-ever doubles pair make the national rankings, with senior Andrea Rivera and junior Alexandra Zinn landing at No. 48 in the Campbell's/Intercollegiate
Tennis Association on February 20.
The men's and women's programs combined to win 68.9 percent of their season matches, the third-best combined percentage in school history, while tallying
31 combined victories, fourth most for the two programs together in one season at Charlotte. The women were 3-1 in Atlantic 10 matches, earning the second seed
and tying their highest seeding at a conference tournament.
In 2011-12, Gorman served on the Carolinas Regional Coaches Committee of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
In 2010, after sustaining injuries, the 49ers shocked the Atlantic 10 by upending the top seed in the tournament, defeating Xavier well into the night at the
championship, which faced a wacky schedule due to rain pushing the matches inside and in a condensed area. The 49ers finished in the top three of the 14-team
league for the fourth time in the first five seasons of league membership. Charlotte has not finished lower than sixth in the league since joining the conference in
2005-06.
The 49ers finished third at the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament in consecutive seasons (2009 and
2010). The Niners saw individuals and pairs surge past the doubles records in 2009, as all three top duos
netted 23 or more wins together. Two 49ers had 26 or more doubles, including Gabi Vergara's 27 doubles
victories, setting the school record. Two other players, Yudeshnee Pillay (25) and Kimber Redfern (24), got
into the top three in single-season singles victories in program history.
In 2009, Gorman matched her best winning percentage at the school (.762).
The 2007 season was another winning campaign, with Charlotte tallying a 12-10 overall mark and
finishing third in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Freshman Ana Spivakovsky was named the league's Freshman
of the Year and won 26 singles matches, breaking the school standard.
In 2006, Gorman guided the 49ers to 16 wins, which was the most by Charlotte since 1991. The 49ers
also recorded their best conference finish by reaching the championship match of the A-10 Tournament.
Ofria Friedman and Ashleigh Murray earned All-Atlantic 10 honors.
In 2005, Gorman again led the 49ers to a second consecutive 14-win season, including a six-match
winning streak. The 49ers rewrote the record books with Laura Swain, Kathy Robey and Murray putting
their names at the top of all the school single-season and career records.
In 2004, the 49ers won 14 matches, the most wins by the program since the 1998 season and the
most by a first-year coach. They also finished sixth in Conference USA, the best league finish by the 49ers.
Gorman had ties to the Charlotte program long before she arrived here for the 2004 campaign. She is
a graduate of Charlotte's South Mecklenburg High School. Her first tennis coach was long-time 49ers coach
Penny Brawley.
The former Michaela Quinn came to Charlotte after spending two seasons as an assistant men's and
women's tennis coach at UNC Greensboro. With the Spartans, she assisted head coach Jeff Trivette with all
aspects of the women's program.
Before beginning her coaching career, she enjoyed a stellar four-year playing career at UNC Greensboro.
She served as a team captain and was a four-year All-Southern Conference doubles player. She
earned a bachelor's degree in recreation, parks and tourism in 2000.
During the summer of 2002, she served as a USTA Southern Section Davis Cup team coach for the
12-and-under division. In that role, she conducted practices and set lineups for match play. While in college,
she also served as the head tennis pro at the Cedarwood Pool in Jamestown, N.C., for two summers.
She married Jeromy Gorman on June 28, 2008, and the couple lives in Mint Hill, N.C., with their two
dogs, Bella and Maddie, and son, Sawyer Douglas, who was born February 22, 2010.
JESSE
TARR
Assistant Coach
Third Season
James Madison, 2008
After being named the Charlotte men's tennis assistant in the summer of 2010, Tarr became the choice for the women's tennis assistant in a dual role shortly
thereafter. He enters his third season in his dual role with both programs.
Tarr played an important role in the men's and women's teams combining for the third-best total win percentage across both programs in school history. Both
49er teams earned byes (the men were the top seed, while the women were seeded second) to the conference tournaments. The men's program earned a record
number of all-conference selections, while the women's program had the school's first ranked doubles pair.
Tarr came to Charlotte after a year as an assistant coach at William and Mary. After a standout career at James Madison, the native of Midlothian, Va., started his
coaching career as a volunteer assistant under Greg Patton at Boise State, which finished No. 20 in the country at the end of the 2009 season.
William and Mary tied the school record with 20 wins in 2010 and clinched the number-one seed in the Colonial Athletic Association for the first time in school history.
The Tribe reached a ranking as high as No. 53 during the year and finished the season ranked No. 75. Three players were named first-team All-CAA in singles and doubles.
Tarr served as the recruiting coordinator for the program, which received votes for the "Top Recruiting Classes" list at tennisrecruiting.net and was ranked No. 6 for
"Top Mid-Major Classes" at the same website. Student-athletes Sebastian Vidal and Keziel Juneau were ranked as high as No. 19 in the nation in doubles, qualified for
the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships and also qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships. Juneau was the Atlantic Region winner of the Arthur
Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award and the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award.
Tarr's season at Boise State culminated in a NCAA Round of 16 appearance and a record of 24-9 in 2009, the second-best mark in school history. Included in the
tournament run was an upset win over regional host and No. 14-seeded Alabama in the second round. The Broncos had three All-WAC singles players and two All-
WAC doubles teams in 2008-09, including the WAC Player of the Year, Clancy Shields, and the Freshman of the Year, James Meredith. Shields finished the year ranked
No. 24 nationally in singles and was named the winner of the ITA National Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award. Meredith also garnered ITA Mountain Region Rookie
of the Year honors.
At JMU, Tarr was a four-year starter, earning 110 total victories (combined singles and doubles) in his playing career and earned five All-CAA honors (four in doubles
and one in singles). As a senior, he was named as a finalist for the James Madison University Athlete of the Year Award. During his junior season, Tarr was ranked
No. 15 regionally in doubles for the Mid-East Region with partner Mike Smith. Carrying over to the next year, Tarr and Smith earned a No. 46 national preseason ranking
for the 2007-08 doubles campaign.
While a student at James Madison, he started the "Day with the Dukes" event as a way to give back to the community. Each year, Special Olympics athletes interact
with a variety of Dukes athletes for a fun day on campus, including a home football game. Participants receive a tailgate lunch, have the opportunity to interact
with football players at Bridgeforth Stadium, attend clinics with the basketball and soccer teams and one participant flips the coin before the football game. Approximately
60 Special Olympics athletes attend Day with the Dukes each year, a program that continues after his graduation. The Psychology Peer Advisory Group
provides one-on-one buddies for the day.
Also strong in the classroom, Tarr earned a CAA Commissioner's Academic Award in 2006 and 2008 as well as being named an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2006.
Tarr earned his bachelors of science in psychology with a minor in athletic coaching from James Madison in 2008.
AJ
NELSON
Volunteer Assistant Coach
First Season
Richmond, 2011
Joining the Charlotte women's tennis program as a volunteer assistant coach in Spring 2013 is former Richmond player AJ Nelson. Nelson, who was recruited to
play at Richmond by 49ers men's tennis coach Billy Boykin, saw time with the Spiders from 2009-11, accumulating 26 singles victories during his three seasons. His
first two years at the fellow Atlantic 10 school were under Boykin's watch after he transferred from another league institution, Rhode Island, where he went 28-7.
Prior to coming to Charlotte, Nelson spent time working with the River Club in downtown Manhattan, N.Y., and the Metal Club in Southhampton, N.Y.
He graduated from Richmond in 2011 with a biology degree. He will also assist the Niners men's tennis program as its director of operations.
Affiliation
Tennis
On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now
the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What
started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only
affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport
league that is universally hailed as one of the
best conferences in the country.
In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in
navigating the sweeping conference realignment
issues, adding Butler University and Virginia
Commonwealth University, both of which began
full membership on July 1, 2012. The league
was declared the “winner” of
conference realignment by
several media outlets, arguably
strengthening the league to its
best-ever lineup with a record
16 members institutions. The
additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative
Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11
academic year.
The 16 member institutions of the A-10
are united and strengthened by their diversity.
Each is extraordinary in its educational mission,
whether of a Catholic faith, a private university
or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of
each member prove that there are many threads
that weave the fabric for a great conference.
The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total
population of over 82 million people within
its geographic footprint of nine states and the
District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21
sports this year, including the 16 sponsored by
Charlotte: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball,
men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf,
men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track &
fi eld, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s
and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.
The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10
institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner
Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a
strong commitment to making the academic and
athletics equation a successful one. The Atlantic
10 Conference ranks fourth in number of teams
publically recognized by the NCAA and fifth in
overall Academic Progress Rate
(APR) average among all 32
Division I Conferences with a
981 average. In all, 56 institutions
were honored by the NCAA
for outstanding APR scores. The
Commissioner’s Honor Roll, honoring studentathletes
with a 3.5 grade point average or better,
listed 1,359 in the fall of 2011.
The league sponsors Academic All-Conference
teams in each of its sports and honors one
student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-
Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10
provides four postgraduate scholarship grants
to qualifi ed student-athletes. Charlotte’s Macey
Ruble captured the 2012 A-10 Male Student-
Athlete of the Year award, becoming the eighth
49er (of a possible 14) to win either the Male
DR. PHILIP
DUBOIS
UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR
7 years (2005-06 to present)
A native of Oakland, California, Philip
L. Dubois attended the University of
California, Davis, where he graduated
in 1972 with an undergraduate degree
in political science, earning election
to the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. He then
earned master’s (1974) and doctoral (1978) degrees in the field from
the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dubois began his academic career in 1976 at the University of
California, Davis. Over the next 15 years, he rose through the faculty
and administrative ranks to full professor and held various administrative
posts, including associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.
In 1991, Dubois was recruited to UNC Charlotte, where he spent
the next six and a half years as provost and vice chancellor for academic
affairs. Dubois was credited with drafting a strategic academic
plan, leading the development of the university’s first comprehensive
campus-wide plan for information technology, and initiating programs
to better serve nontraditional adult students. Under his leadership, UNC
Charlotte also planned and launched its first doctoral programs.
In 1997, Dubois was named president of the University of Wyoming.
In that role, he led the development of comprehensive academic,
support services, and capital construction plans for the campus; stimulated
a growing volume of new capital construction projects and building
renovations; expanded UW’s role in statewide economic development;
and improved the recruitment and retention of students. During his
eight-year tenure, state and federal legislative support increased significantly,
while private gifts to the university more than quadrupled.
He was honored in 2004 by the Council for Advancement and Support
of Education (CASE) with its District VI Chief Executive Leadership
Award.
On March 18, 2005, Dubois was named UNC Charlotte’s fourth
chancellor and assumed that role on July 15. In his first seven years,
Dubois has focused his efforts on building the University’s visibility and
support in the Charlotte region; long-range planning for an expected
enrollment of 35,000 students; completion of key capital construction
projects (including a major new building located in Center City
Charlotte); improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of critical
business processes; and implementation of an intercollegiate football
program starting in the fall of 2013.
Dr. Dubois and his wife, Lisa Lewis Dubois, have three adult
children: Logan, Taylor, and Ali. They are the first family to occupy the
chancellor’s official campus residence, Bissell House.
1985-90: Associate Director of Athletics
1981-85: Assistant Director of Athletics
1976-82: Women’s Basketball Coach
Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose is one of the most
successful and well-respected Athletics Directors in the nation.
At the time of her appointment in 1990, she was just the third female
to be put in charge of a Division I program. In 1999-2000, she became the
first female to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.
She served a five-year term (2000-2004) on that committee. She also
completed a term as 2003-04 President of the National Association
of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was one of less than
70 university presidents and athletics administrators invited to NCAA
President Mark Emmert’s Summer 2011 Retreat.
Chief among her accomplishments with the university is the
systematic growth of the 49ers program. That growth will culminate with
the unveiling of the 49ers football program in 2013.
With the 49ers, she has overseen the 49ers moves from the Sun
Belt Conference to the Metro Conference to Conference USA and onto
the Atlantic 10 in 2005-06. She has overseen the 49ers growth into a
program that is fully-funded at the NCAA level for athletic scholarships.
She has helped develop nearly $50 million worth of athletic facilities
which have enhanced playing venues, academic services, strength
and conditioning programs, training and medical support to improve the
experience of each and every student-athlete. With the completion of
the football stadium that facility figure willl rise to nearly $100 million.
She has been instrumental in attracting national sporting events
to Charlotte such as the 1994 Men’s Basketball Final Four, the 1996
Women’s Basketball Final Four, the 1999 and 2000 Men’s Soccer College
Cups as well as a variety of NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament rounds.
The 49ers have enjoyed similar success in competition and the
classroom. Since Rose became A.D., 14 of the school’s 16 athletic
programs have either won a league title or been represented in NCAA
play, or both. Prior to her stint as A.D., only two programs touted such
success. Meanwhile, the athletic department now boasts a cumulative
GPA of over 3.0 and Charlotte has won eight of the last 14 A-10 Scholar-
Athlete of the Year Awards.
Along the way, Rose has reaped her share of awards, for professional
success, contributions to the community and leadership.
Helped attract 1994 NCAA Men’s Final Four and 1996 NCAA
Woman’s Final Four, 1999 and 2000 NCAA Div. I Men’s Soccer
College Cups, the 1997 AAU Junior Olympics and a variety of
NCAA Basketball Tournament rounds to Charlotte.
Charlotte
Charlotte was incorporated in 1768, named in honor of the wife of King George III,
the reigning English monarch. Even though the residents disagreed with laws set
forth by Britain, naming the town Charlotte was in hopes to win favor with the King.
