2011-12 Recap/2012-13 Season Outlook
The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis program continued to add to its illustrious history in 2011-12, not only earning
the No. 2 seed at the Atlantic 10 Tournament but also by opening a beautiful new, on-campus facility: Halton-Wagner
Tennis Complex. The new facility is just the latest in an overall boom across campus to showcase 49ers athletic teams.
On the courts, Charlotte earned a 16-6 record as head coach Michaela Gorman surpassed the 100-win plateau, becoming
just the second mentor in program history to accomplish the feat. It marked the third time in her nine seasons
she has guided the squad to 16 wins.
Last spring, the doubles pairing of senior Andrea Rivera and junior Alexandra Zinn became the first duo in program
history to earn a national ranking, landing at No. 48 in the Campbell's/ITA listings for February 20.
This season, eight returners and two newcomers comprise the roster for Gorman's 10th campaign. A quintet of
seniors -- Emmanuelle Briant, Anna Ekelund, Iveta Guneva, Ginny Johnson and Alexandra Zinn -- will be playing its final
season in the green and white. Zinn was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 team a year ago, joining her doubles partner
Rivera and last season's team MVP, sophomore Natsuko Takayanagi.
Charlotte will participate in four fall tournaments, including playing host to the Charlotte 49er Invitational October
12-13, and a pair of dual matches in preparation for the spring campaign. The first full season at the Halton-Wagner Tennis
Complex is on the docket in 2012-13. Nine spring dual matches are slated to be played at the facility, including seven
against Carolinas Region foes and the only Atlantic 10 regular-season contest.
