Kudos to Marilyn Brooks, Lena Gerhart<br />
and Denise Tremblay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Powell River<br />
Lions Club <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir work with <strong>the</strong> trauma<br />
bear program.<br />
Trauma bears are given to children in<br />
distress. “When a child is going through<br />
a frightening experience a bear is given to<br />
<strong>the</strong>m <strong>for</strong> com<strong>for</strong>t,” said Brooks.<br />
The bears were sold at <strong>the</strong> Liquor<br />
Store over <strong>the</strong> holidays. The Lions had<br />
48 trauma bears to donate to Emergency<br />
at <strong>the</strong> Powell River General Hospital,<br />
Children’s Services, Grace House, Foster<br />
Parents and Easter Seal House in Vancouver.<br />
Gerhart and Tremblay sewed a Lions<br />
patch on each bear so people know <strong>the</strong><br />
Lions donated <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Author shortlisted<br />
Kudos to Susan Young de Biagi <strong>for</strong> being<br />
shortlisted <strong>for</strong> two Atlantic Book Awards<br />
<strong>for</strong> her new novel, Cibou.<br />
Young de Biagi’s novel has been shortlisted<br />
<strong>for</strong> historical writing and <strong>for</strong> fiction.<br />
Sixteen books are contending <strong>for</strong><br />
nine awards, which will be announced<br />
on April 15.<br />
Cibou is set in <strong>the</strong> 17th century and<br />
is <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> a young Mi’kmaq woman<br />
and her relationship with Jesuit missionary<br />
Anthony Daniel, a historical figure<br />
first stationed in Cape Breton in 1632<br />
and his bro<strong>the</strong>r Captain Charles Daniel,<br />
who established a French trading post in<br />
1629. Young de Biagi is a native <strong>of</strong> Cape<br />
Breton and has written or co-written several<br />
books.<br />
Cibou was released last year and is published<br />
by Cape Breton University Press.<br />
Best in <strong>the</strong> west<br />
Kudos to Abby Lloyd <strong>for</strong> recently being<br />
crowned as <strong>the</strong> Western Canadian Judo<br />
Champion. Twelve-year-old Abby was<br />
in Edmonton at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> March to<br />
compete in <strong>the</strong> Western Canadian Judo<br />
Championships and was undefeated.<br />
She has held <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> BC Champion<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> last three years. Abby dreams<br />
<strong>of</strong> making <strong>the</strong> Olympics. Way to go<br />
