life in the late 1950’s. Although I never
met Mr. Perry, my older brother became
his corporate pilot and his name was
mentioned quite often in our home. So
you see, Jack Perry has touched my life
like he has millions of other Americans
even though most of us had never met
him. Once again, Jack Perry entered my
life in 1993 when the company he founded
in 1968, Perry Homes, started advertising
in Real Estate and You magazine‚ which I
worked for at the time, but now own. I
continued to see his name associated
with words like Patriot, America, Freedom,
Vietnam Veterans and Future. He has
given all of us a greater place to live,
America is just a little bit better because
of Jack Perry. May you rest in peace Mr.

Ashton Woods Readies Homes in
Amenity-Rich Lakes of Bella Terra
Acclaimed schools, plentiful amenities and move-in ready

“We’re addressing the market’s strong demand for homes geared
to empty-nesters and young professionals looking for new homes in
Katy/West Houston. They desire a gated community environment
with homes in the size and price-range of a patio home versus a larger
custom home you’d find in most gated communities,” said
Firethorne General Manager Wayne Meyer. “A gated section
such as this means reduced traffic and more seclusion for single
homeowners, young marrieds and couples who are down-sizing.”
Meyer says he had conversations with several builders about
Firethorne’s gated section, but Perry Homes “jumped quick to do the
whole deal.”
Perry Homes will build one- and two-story homes on 60- by 130-
foot lots. Their flagship is a one-story, four-bedroom, three-bath brick
and stone model set to open this week. The Perry model, located at
27947 Colonial Point Drive in Model Park II, will be on Firethorne’s
upcoming Taste of Texas Model Home Tour May 4-10.
Firethorne’s new gated section will feature a two-acre lake surrounded
by nature/walking trails, a mail kiosk and a playground.
Phase I will be composed of 67 homes, with 96 homes planned
for Phase II. Home prices start in the $290’s. Homeowners in the
gated community have full access to all Firethorne amenities.
Firethorne has sold 147 new homes to date in 2013 and 1,777
homes since its inception in mid-2005. Last year marked a recordbreaking
year with 280 new homes sold.

Setting the stage for Vista Fontana is Riverstone, a project

Start Remodeling in Your Own Backyard:
Remodelers Council of the Greater Houston Builders
Association offers tips for transforming outdoor living spaces
When homeowners consider a renovation, the interior of a house
often gets all the attention. The outside space, however, deserves just as
much thought, according to members of the Remodelers Council of the
Greater Houston Builders Association.
A few small changes can make an outdoor space more welcoming and
functional, And with a little more effort, an outdoor living space can
become spectacular – rivaling the interiors of some homes.
Brandon Lynch, founder of Keechi Creek Builders, said the
trend of extending living space to the outdoors took off a couple years ago.
Lynch said the reason is simple. “People want to have somewhere to
go outside,” he explained. “That’s where they want to spend their time.
They want to be outdoors, barbeque and hang out by the pool.”
Rob Douglass, owner of Texas Custom Patios, is seeing a similar
increase in interest. “There’s a lot of demand for adding outdoor living
space,” he said. “In Houston, we have good weather most of the year.
People want to take advantage of that.”
There are several ways the builders recommend improving
outdoor space:
• Update finishes. Douglass said a good first step is changing the
finish on existing features – from walkways to ceilings. “Instead of bare
concrete, we use stamped concrete, travertine or slate floors,” he said.
He also adds new stains to wooden ceilings or shade structures. “We
make all the same kinds of decisions as we do for interior spaces,” he said.
“We look at granite countertops, flooring, paints and stains.”
• Change the lighting. Lighting is another essential update,
Douglass said. Spending time outdoors is not just for the daytime. Good
lighting makes outdoor living space safer and extends the use of a deck or
lawn into the evening.
• Get cooking. Outdoor kitchens are the heart of the action, Lynch
said. The grill typically takes center stage, but homeowners are cooking
more than steaks and barbeque outside these days. Open-air kitchens feature
refrigerators, sinks, pizza ovens, counter space and even bars. “Many
of our clients install commercial grade equipment,” Lynch added.
• Heat it up. Lynch said most of his clients request a fire pit or fireplace
for their decks and patios. Douglass said outdoor fireplaces are one
of the hottest trends he has witnessed lately. (Continues on page 38.)

Soundproofing Tips to Turn Your Home into
a Quiet Sanctuary
All around us, life is getting louder. But home should be a place to
relax and unwind. Between televisions, cell phones, computers and
video games, it’s sometimes hard to find peace and quiet within the
walls of your home.
Luckily, with a few do-it-yourself soundproofing projects, you can
reclaim your home as a place of respite no matter what’s going on in
the rooms around you.
• Fabrics: For a quick fix, think fabric. In addition to complementing
the look of a room, soft rugs, carpeting, curtains and tapestries
make great sound absorbers. And just a few rugs can spell a lot of
disturbance-free foot traffic.
• Furniture: Give rooms a unique touch and a powerful sound
barrier by placing thickly-upholstered chairs in each corner. Large
bookcases against common walls can also help block noise.
• Surface texture: Rough surfaces on walls and ceilings, such as
sprayed-on texture, a textured paint job or even wallpaper can help
reduce sound waves in a noisy room.
• Insulation: The simplest, most effective way to soundproof is to
reduce airflow between rooms with a high-density stone wool insulation
that’s specifically designed for noise reduction.
• Cracks: Sound can burrow through crevices and cracks. Seal
cracks around baseboards and in drywall, and block slits around window
seals and interior doors.
While homes are getting louder, there’s good news — many soundproofing
techniques have additional benefits, from aesthetic appeal to
improved energy efficiency. Take steps today to make your home a
more peaceful, comfortable place to live.
Woodforest Opens 1st Forest Island Amenities
A game of tennis or some one-on-one basketball? It’s a question

after the opening of the Forest Island recreation complex last month.

square feet of water surface and 10,000 square feet of decking.
Anchoring the area is a 42-foot water tower that is home base for two
twisting water slides. The pool also has several play spaces for various
ages and interests, including a zero-entry lagoon for toddlers, a
sports zone for water volleyball and basketball and in-the-water sun
decks. A log beam extending to an interior island gives children a
chance to test their balance and possibly splash into the water below.
“This pool complex was designed to appeal to a great number of
people,” said Virgil Yoakum, general manager of Woodforest.
“Families will find plenty to do, whether the goal is relaxation or
playing.”
Trails and a footbridge connect Forest Island to the nearby
Lily Pad Spray Park and neighborhoods.
The pool and sports courts are the first section of the multiphased
Forest Island complex. Complementary amenities will be
planned as the development continues to grow.
Woodforest has seen record-breaking sales this year, with
builders reporting new-home sales more than double last year’s pace.

Michael Smith has been promoted to Senior Vice
President and Director of Land Development for The
Johnson Development Corp. where he will direct the
development, marketing and sales of the company’s

In his new role, Smith also will represent the

Smith previously served as General Manager of Johnson

log that can be started with a switch. People want it to be maintenance
free.”
• Make it more entertaining. Douglass said several clients add
entertainment systems to their outdoor living space. “Some have elaborate
systems with televisions and surround sound speakers,” he said.
• Keep it cool. Lynch said that in Houston, shade structures are
essential. “In Texas, we have to be in the shade,” he said. “Ceiling fans
are also popular additions to outdoor living spaces.”
• Go Texan. “A lot of people have a hill country look in mind,”
Douglass said. “Stone and cedar are very popular in Texas.”
Outdoor living projects range from small and budget-friendly to
extraordinary and pricey, the builders said. At the end of the day, homeowners
want more space to entertain friends, family and neighbors.

Kids Learn How Hot Air Rises from RE/MAX
The red, white and blue RE/MAX hot air balloon, 70 feet tall
and part of the world’s largest commercial balloon fleet, was
presented as an educational program on meteorology, aeronautics, and
the science of lighter-than-air flight to Kings Manor Elementary
School in Kingwood last week.

The RE/MAX balloon was piloted by RE/MAX of Texas
Aviation Director Steve Lombardi, also a fixed wing pilot, and one
of the top international competitive hot air balloon pilots in the world.
Lombardi demonstrated the mechanisms that launch and navigate the
balloon, explained the importance of wind, temperature and other variables,
and delivered an engaging history of mankind’s progress in
achieving powered flight.
“One thing I learned was that the first hot air flight in America
was in 1792 in Philadelphia, which as you recall was serving as the
temporary U.S. Capitol, and was witnessed by President George
Washington,” said Buddy Wall, Broker/Manager at RE/MAX
Associates Northeast who was the Texas RE/MAXBroker/Owner
of the Year in 2012 “The response from the school, the kids and parents,
and our customers who heard about it from their friends and
neighbors has been astonishing, and plans are currently in the works
for us to repeat this at a school in Atascocita in the fall, near our
RE/MAX Northeast Associates II office.”
