Het Museumplein is een openbare
ruimte met een rijke historie. In
1883 vond hier de Wereldtentoonstelling
plaats, het Stedelijk Museum,
het Van Gogh Museum en het Concertgebouw
vormen de statige entourage.
Op de uitgestrekte grasvlakte mogen
zowel Amsterdammers als toeristen
graag recreëren, terwijl senioren onder
de platanen onverstoorbaar hun potjes
petanque spelen.
De keuze om twee atletiekonderdelen
naar dit bruisende stadshart te brengen
hangt samen met het concept van de
EK Atletiek: Athletics Like Never Before.
Het aanbieden van topatletiek aan de
stad en zijn inwoners sluit daar naadloos
bij aan. Pas als een speerworp van
meer dan negentig meter zich voor je
neus voltrekt, wordt duidelijk hoe
immens ver dat is. Dat dit fotogenieke
momenten oplevert, hoeft geen betoog.
Niet eerder werden deze onderdelen van
een EK atletiek buiten een stadion
georganiseerd, Amsterdam heeft de
primeur. Athletics Like Never Before.
Zowel de stad Amsterdam als de
atletieksport krijgt hiermee de aandacht
ATLETIEK EN MARKETING: EEN STERK CONCEPT
Amsterdam heeft de primeur voor het decentraal afwerken van twee toernooionderdelen tijdens een EK atletiek, maar het vermarkten
van topatletiek gebeurt al langer. Zo vinden in de Britse steden Gateshead en Manchester jaarlijks de Great City Games plaats, een
minitoernooi waarbij het publiek elite-atleten in actie ziet tegen de achtergrond van de iconische skyline. De Oostenrijker Armin Margreiter
organiseert al sinds 2005 met succes de Golden Roof Challenge, een toernooi dat bestaat uit twee disciplines: polsstokhoogspringen
en verspringen. De competitie speelt zich af in het hart van historisch Innsbruck en is vrij toegankelijk. Het publiek bestaat uit duizenden
toeristen, passanten en atletiekfans. Vanaf tribunes en langs een door de IAAF gecertificeerde catwalk kan men de verrichtingen van de
atleten van nabij volgen. Armin Margreiter: ‘Op deze manier wordt beter dan in een stadion duidelijk wat voor enorme prestaties de
atleten leveren. Bovendien zijn ze beschikbaar om een praatje te maken, handtekeningen uit te delen of op de foto te gaan met fans. In
mijn visie ligt hier de toekomst van de atletiek.’

Rijksmuseum dient als decor voor een
klassieke sport als het discuswerpen,
filmbeelden gaan de hele wereld over.
Passanten kunnen plaatsnemen op de
tribunes en kennismaken met de
atletieksport. Via grote beeldschermen
kunnen de verrichtingen van de atleten
in het Olympisch Stadion live worden
gevolgd, en de NOS zal live verslag doen
van de competitie op het Museumplein.
De afmetingen van de werpsectoren
voldoen aan de officiële standaarden die
de Internationale Associatie van Atletiek
Federaties (IAAF) daarvoor hanteert. Op
het Museumplein kunnen de atleten zich
kwalificeren voor de finalerondes die in
het stadion zullen plaatsvinden. Mocht
er een wereldrecord worden geworpen,
dan kan dit officieel worden erkend. En
ook dat zou een fantastische primeur
zijn. Om de veiligheid van de toeschouwers
te waarborgen, wordt er voldoende
afstand bewaard tussen werpzones en
openbare ruimte waar zich de tribunes
bevinden.
Een microfonist is ter plaatse om tekst
en uitleg te geven over het verloop van
de competitie en het wedstrijdreglement,
waarbij hij wordt ondersteund
door een zogenaamd Event Presentation
Team. De werpers zullen aan het
publiek worden voorgesteld door
middel van hun palmares, een scorebord
toont de geworpen afstand, het
nummer van de poging en de positie
van de atleet in de wedstrijd. Voor het
opmeten van de worpen wordt gebruikt
gemaakt van Electronic Distance
Measurement (EDM), apparatuur
waarmee afstanden optisch en accuraat
kunnen worden opgemeten.

Museumplein is a public space with
a rich history. In 1883 the World’s
Fair took place here, the Stedelijk
Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and the
Concerthall form a stately entourage.
Locals and tourists alike love relaxing on
the stretched out greens while the
elderly play a game of petanque in the
shade.
The decision to bring two events to the
heart of the city ties in with the concept
of the European Athletics Championships:
Athletics Like Never Before.
Offering athletics to the city and its
inhabitants is a seemless fit. It is not
until a javelin travels for 90 metres right
in front of you that you realise how far
this is. That this will result in a huge
amount of photo opportunities goes
without saying. Never before did these
athletic events take place outside of a
stadium, Amsterdam has the exclusive.
Athletics Like Never Before.
Both the city of Amsterdam and the
sports will get the attention they
deserve. The neogothic Rijksmuseum
will be the backdrop for classic sports
like the discus throw, footage will travel
all across the world. Passersby can take
place on the stands and get to know the
sports. Big screens will enable you to
follow the athletes accomplishments
live, and the NOS will report live from the
games at Museumplein.
The measurements of the throwing
sectors comply with the official
standards of the International Association
of Athletics Federations (IAAF). At
Museumplein athletes will be able to
qualify for the finals which will take place
at the stadium. In case of a world record
this can be officially acknowledged, that
would be an amazing scoop. To ensure
the safety of spectators there will be a
safe distance between the throwing
ranges and the public spaces.
An announcer will be present to report on
the competition and the rules, with full
support from a so called Event Presentation
Team. The athletes will be introduced
to the audience through their
palmares, a scoreboard showing the
throwing distance, the number of
attempt and the position of the athlete in
the games. To measure the distances an
Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM)
will be used, this technology measures
distances optically and accurately.
ATHLETICS AND MARKETING: A STRONG CONCEPT
Amsterdam has the exclusive for decentralizing these two events during the Athletics Championships,
but marketing of high end athletics has been happening for a lot longer. The
British cities of Gateshead and Manchester organise the annual Great City Games, a mini
tournament where the public can see elite athletes compete on the backdrop of an iconic
skyline. The Austrian Armin Margreiter has been successfully organising the Golden Roof
Challenge since 2005, a tournament consisting of two disciplines: pole vault and long-jump.
The competition takes place in the heart of historic Innsbruck and is freely accessible for
everyone. The audience consists of thousands of tourists, passersby and athletics fans.
From the bleachers and alongside an IAAF certified catwalk people can follow the athletes’
accomplishments up close. Armin Margreiter: ‘This really showcases how huge the
accomplishments of the athletes are, more so than in a stadium. At the same time they are
available for a chat, signing autographs or have their picture taken with the fans. In my
opinion this is the future of athletics.’
