fOR ResIDeNTs GeTTING aROUND PARkING CITY VEHICLE STICKERS All Chicagoans who own a vehicle in the city limits are required by law to obtain a City of Chicago vehicle sticker. Residents living in Lincoln Park are required to renew their city vehicle sticker before they expire on June 30 of each year. Individuals moving to Chicago or purchasing a new vehicle are given 30 days following the purchase or move-in date to obtain the necessary sticker without incurring a late fee. RESIDENTIAL PARKING PERMITS Chicago residential parking permits limit parking on many city streets to residents and their guests during designated hours. With schools, a major university and dozens of businesses. A few notes on residential parking permits: • You must purchase a City of Chicago vehicle sticker to qualify for a residential parking permit; • Residential parking zones often differ block by block; • Only vehicles parking on city streets within a residential parking zone are required to purchase these permits. Residents who park their vehicles in a garage every night are exempt; • Cars parked in residential permit zones without the appropriate permit will be subject to parking fines. The current annual fee for residential parking permits is $25. Residential parking permits can be purchased online or in-person. To apply for a residential parking permit, a receipt of your Chicago vehicle sticker purchase and proof of residency is required. The purchase or renewal of Chicago vehicle stickers can be done online, in-person and through the mail (renewals only). In-person transactions can be completed at the City Clerk of Chicago’s office in City Hall, as well as at one of the City Clerk’s satellite offices, City of Chicago Department of Revenue Substations and many Currency Exchanges (for a fee). VISITOR PARKING PERMITS Residents are responsible for ensuring that their guests are provided with parking permits as required by their residential parking zone. Your guest will receive a parking ticket if a current visitor parking permit is not properly displayed on the passenger side windshield of his or her vehicle. One-day visitor parking permits are available to residents in packs of 15 for $8 at the City Clerk of Chicago’s office in City Hall or one of the City Clerk’s satellite facilities. In 2009, the City of Chicago leased the city’s meters to a private firm who installed pay-and-display boxes along these streets. This system uses payment boxes that allow customers to purchase time with quarters and/ or credit cards only. The machine then prints a receipt to be placed on the dashboard. For most of Lincoln Park, the cost to park is $1.25/hour with a maximum time of two hours. Some streets, however, near restaurants and theatres offer a three hour option. PUBLIc tRANSPORtAtION CTA: AN OVERVIEW The Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) train system—commonly referred to as the “L,” short for elevated train—consists of seven routes separated by color. Signs on each car display the color and final destination, such as “Loop,” “O’Hare” or “Midway.” Lincoln Park is served by three lines: the Brown Line, which offers service between the Loop and Kimball; the Red Line, which runs between Howard and 95th/Dan Ryan; and the Purple Line Express which offers rush hour service, Monday through Friday, between Linden (in Evanston) and the Loop. Several CTA bus routes offer service to and from Lincoln Park making access to the neighborhood and its businesses, cultural institutions and more a breeze. BIKING The Department of Transportation has worked to make Chicago one of the county’s most bike-friendly cities. With a bike trail that follows Lake Michigan’s famous shoreline from Rogers Park to Hyde Park, countless bike lanes through the heart of Lincoln Park and dozens of bike racks throughout the neighborhood, it is easy to run errands and sightsee with two wheels instead of four. CAR SHARING Two major companies are currently operating in Chicago offering residents the option of “car-sharing” to minimize cars, congestion and pollution in the city.
