SuStainable MOD tiMeline<br />
1973 MOD Conservation Offcer appointed as a new role in MOD<br />
and establishment of MOD Conservation Groups begins to<br />
assist MOD in its environmental and conservation<br />
management on sites.<br />
1975 Sanctuary Magazine published for the first time as a<br />
newsletter.<br />
1987 “Our Common Future”, the Brundtland Commission’s report<br />
defines sustainable development as “development which<br />
meets the needs of the present without compromising the<br />
ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.<br />
1991 Sanctuary Awards established.<br />
1992 The Earth Summit, the UN Conference on Environment and<br />
Development is held in Rio de Janeiro.<br />
1994 UK publishes first national sustainable development<br />
strategy, making the UK one of the first countries to produce<br />
a sustainable development strategy in response to the call<br />
made at the Rio Earth Summit.<br />
1995 RN’s first Environmental Protection Policy and Safety and<br />
Environmental Management System developed.<br />
1999 A Better Quality of Life is published, setting out government<br />
proposals to deliver sustainable development.<br />
2000 “In Trust and On Trust”, the strategy for the Defence estate is<br />
published.<br />
2000 Framework for Sustainable Development on the<br />
Government estate – first targets published.<br />
2002 MOD’s Appraisal Handbook for Sustainability and the<br />
Environment is published provides MOD with its first<br />
sustainability appraisal tool.<br />
2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development ( WSSD) takes<br />
place in Johannesburg.<br />
2002 MOD’s first Sustainable Development strategy is developed.<br />
An internal document only.<br />
2004 Framework for Sustainable Development on the<br />
Government estate targets published, covering Energy,<br />
Waste, Estates Management, Sustainable Procurement, and<br />
Social Impacts.<br />
2005 “Securing the Future” is published, providing a revised UK<br />
Government strategy for sustainable development, and a<br />
strategic framework was agreed by the UK Government and<br />
the devolved administrations.<br />
2005 Sustainable Procurement Task Forces National Action Plan<br />
“Procuring the Future” published, includes tools such as the<br />
Flexible Framework and Prioritisation methodology.<br />
2005 Sustainable Operations on the Government Estate targets<br />
published.<br />
2005 MOD’s first Sustainable Development Annual report<br />
published (2003-2004).<br />
2006 “In Trust and On Trust”, MOD’s 2nd estate strategy is<br />
published.<br />
2006 Government’s Sustainable Procurement Action Plan<br />
published.<br />
2007 MOD Sustainable Waste Management Strategy revised.<br />
2008 Climate Change Act 2008 comes into force, and MOD<br />
Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan are published.<br />
2008 MOD’s Sustainable Development strategy is published.<br />
2009 MOD Sustainability and Environmental Appraisal Tools<br />
Handbook is published, and updates guidance for<br />
sustainability appraisal across all MOD business, and<br />
expands to include other appraisal tools available.<br />
2010 SOGE targets (2005-2010) met or exceeded by MOD for<br />
energy, carbon emissions from offces, carbon emissions<br />
from fleet, waste and recycling, water effciency, and SSSIs.<br />
2010 Prime Minister’s 10% Carbon Target is set. MOD exceeds this<br />
target with a 14.8% reduction.<br />
2010 MOD’s Climate Impacts Risk Assessment Methodology<br />
(CIRAM) is developed to identify levels of risk, and mitigation<br />
measures for MOD to adapt to climate risks. A programme of<br />
assessments is begun.<br />
2010 MOD Sustainable ICT Task Force launched to ensure that the<br />
Department is engaged on meeting the appropriate Green<br />
ICT targets.<br />
2010 National Security Strategy/Strategic Defence Security<br />
Review published recognising climate change and resource<br />
security.<br />
2010 MOD publishes its MOD Departmental Adaptation Plan for<br />
Climate Change, Waste Strategy, and Sustainable<br />
Procurement Strategy published including both equipment<br />
and estates commitments.<br />
2010 Army Carbon footprint measurement project completed.<br />
2011 Energy Invest to Save Programme begins, and Energy<br />
Awards established.<br />
2011 Greening Government Commitments and Targets are<br />
published, providing revised commitments and targets for<br />
government, and MOD’s strategy is updated to include<br />
them.<br />
2011 MOD Sustainable ICT policy published (2011DIN06-08).<br />
2011 Army Orders on the Organisation and Arrangements for the<br />
Management of Sustainable Development in Land Forces<br />
published by Commander Land Forces.<br />
2012 Rio +20. Twenty years after the Earth Summit, the global<br />
community reconvenes in an effort to secure agreement on<br />
“greening” world economies through a range of smart<br />
measures for energy, and sustainable and fair use of<br />
resources.<br />
2012 100% of green electricity purchased for MOD infrastructure.<br />
2012 MOD Energy Plan agreed by PUS and CDS. Target to reduce<br />
Armed Forces reliance on fossil fuels by 18% by 2020.<br />
2013 Changes to governance and Sustainable MOD Steering<br />
Group established, a guide to deliver the sustainable MOD<br />
objectives.<br />
2015 “Act and Evolve” - the Sustainable MOD Strategy is issued, to<br />
set out the priorities sustainability issues for MOD for the<br />
next few years.<br />
2015 MOD’s Sustainability and Environmental Appraisal Tools<br />
Handbook is updated and published.<br />
