FHHR encouraging residents
to get the flu shot
by Scott Hellings
The Five Hills Health Region (FHHR) wants to protect you
and your loved ones from the influenza virus this season. The
FHHR will be offering free flu clinics over the next few weeks.
All Saskatchewan residents six months and older can receive
the vaccine.
“We are encouraging everyone, including family members, to
get vaccinated to protect not only themselves but those around
them. This is an important complement to other infection control
measures to prevent the spread of the influenza virus,”
said Dr. Mark Vooght, Medical Health Officer with the FHHR.
“The vaccine is our primary form of ammunition in preventing
influenza spreading, but the other measures such as frequent
hand washing and coughing into your sleeve or shoulder are
critical in preventing the spread of influenza as we move into
the winter season.”
Large clinics were held at Mosaic Place beginning on October
19 and continued through to October 21. Clinics will be held
at Timothy Eaton Gardens on October 26 and 27 and the Town
‘n’ Country Mall on November 6 and 7. Vaccinations are also
available at some pharmacies. Clinics will run until November
17. Visit www.fhhr.ca for more information.
There is not a strong influenza presence right now but that
could change. Vooght says that the last week of November is
when the first cases of influenza typically become more established
in the community. The best defence is to get vaccinated
early.
“We are strongly encouraging people to get vaccinated as soon
as possible because it is always a bit of a guess as to when the
virus is actually going to arrive.”
The effectiveness of the vaccine varies according to the age
and the immune response of the individual, as well as the
match between the vaccine strains and the influenza strains
circulating in the community. Antibodies to prevent influenza
should develop with two to three weeks after immunization in
most healthy children and adults.
The belief is H3N2 will be the dominant A strain this year.
Vooght notes this is contained in the vaccine although it is not
a perfect match for the anticipated strain. Regardless, you can
still expect protection from the virus. If you have had flu shots
in previous years that will help dictate how much immunity
you have.
The FHHR will have a small amount of an injectable quadrivalent
vaccine, which protects against two influenza A and two
influenza B viruses. This is reserved for pregnant women and
kids between six and 23 months of age. There is also a nasal
spray vaccine known as FluMist that is a great option for kids
between the ages of two and 17.
One of the common misconceptions about the vaccine is that
it can actually give you influenza. Vooght says that “is just not
possible.” This is because the vaccination does not contain
any live viruses. He adds that side effects are minimal, which
might include some tenderness at the site of the injection and
possibly even minor headaches and muscle pains. The nasal
spray may result in a runny nose for a day or two.
Be sure to get yourself vaccinated this season.
“What happens when you are exposed to the virus and we haven’t
been vaccinated, it basically goes into our bloodstream
and affects all the muscles in the body. The heart is a muscle,
for example, and so it can weaken the heart,” said Vooght. “If
you have pre-existing conditions then exposure to the influenza
virus can take root in your respiratory passages and it
can give you bronchitis and, in some patients, pneumonia. This
includes pregnant women. They are quite prone to respiratory
manifestations of influenza. That is why we really encourage
pregnant women at all stages of their pregnancy to be vaccinated.
It is really important.”
