Mike Schouten is the director of We Need a Law
Canada, North Korea and China are the only three
countries in the world that have no laws to protect
pre-born life.
Mike Schouten is the director of We Need a Law.
He, along with eight volunteers and in partnership
with the Association for Reformed Political Actions
A peaceful rally was held on Main Street
(ARPA) began the Life Tour in Moncton on September
23. They plan to end on October 17 in Vancouver.
The goal is to make political candidates and the general
public aware of the campaign. Recognizing that
change is done in a series of steps, they are starting
with laws with which they believe everyone can
agree. “To change the culture, you have to engage the
culture,” explains Mike Schouten. “This isn’t a prolife
issue. It’s a human rights issue.”
Because the pro-life movement meets with some resistance,
We Need a Law would like people to ask
their candidates about their stand on the following
three issues:
1. Late term abortion. Abortions are permitted even
after a fetus can survive outside the womb. Instead,
adoption could be a viable option.
2. Sex selection abortion. Developing countries often
make headlines by denying girls the right to education,
or by selling or destroying female babies. Canadian
law allows for babies to be aborted if the parents
want a child of the other sex. Most often, girls are
aborted.
3. Pre-born victims of crime. There are no laws recognizing
life until birth. This means that any crime
committed against a pregnant woman is treated as a
single crime. There is no justice for the unborn child.
After a noon hour rally in Moose Jaw, the Life Tour
moved on to Saskatoon for an evening event and will
be in Vancouver before Election Day.
Casino makes huge profits
By Ron Walter For Moose Jaw Express
Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation casinos in Moose Jaw and Regina are on
track to put $51.9 million profits into provincial government bank accounts this
year.
In first half financial statements the corporation indicates it has used “strong expense
management” to achieve the net income position planned.
Expenses have been reduced by $2.2 million to June 30 with declines in labour
cost variances, printing, postage, communication, advertising and promotion.
Revenues for the first six months of the year fell 1.1 per cent to $62.59 million.
Guest counts increased by one-half per cent over 2014. No breakdown of guest
count changes by casino was provided.
But guest counts were unable to alleviate small average spend per slot guest. And
gaming table revenues fell by $800,000 during the period.
Sask Gaming paid the government $19.5 million to June 30, an increase of about
$1.1 million over 2014.
The Crown Corporation still earned 43 per cent return on equity in the casino
operations. The operation has $12.8 million cash and $11.7 million debt.
