Musical Comedy ‘The Cocksure Lads’ Film Coming to Library Theatre
by Janet Kilgannon for Moose Jaw Express
Great Big Sea’s Murray Foster brings his musical comedy
‘The Cocksure Lads Movie’ to Moose Jaw on Saturday,
October 24th, 2015. The venue will be the Moose
Jaw Public Library Theatre at 7 pm. Foster wrote and
directed the movie, as well as the songs that propel the
‘Lads’ to pop celebrity.
The Cocksure Lads Movie is a feature-length film about
an English band on the cusp of stardom who arrive in Toronto
for their first-ever North American tour. Ten minutes
after arriving, they get into a fight over royalties and
break up. Over the course of a day that showcases many
of Toronto’s unique neighbourhoods, they learn what it
means to be a band - but it remains to be seen if they can
patch things up before their big show.
The film stars Lyndon Ogbourne, best known as bad boy
Nathan Wylde on the UK soap opera Emmerdale. The
strong supporting cast are known British and Canadian
actors, as well as up-and-coming talent. There are also
cameos by musicians Kendel Carson, Walk Off the Earth,
and Alan Doyle (Great Big Sea).
The movie grew out of dozens of Britpop songs that
musician Murray Foster and his musical cohort Mike
Ford have written over the past two decades. In the mid-
1990’s they were both members of the Canadian folkpop
group Moxy Fruvous, known for its sweet harmonies
and witty lyrics. They began to write songs in the genre
of early 60’s Britpop (think Gerry and the Pacemakers,
Herman’s Hermits, early Beatles).
In 2010, they went into the studio to record their 25 best
tunes, creating an alter-ego group, and coming out with
‘The Greatest Hits of the Cocksure Lads, 1963-1968.’
Foster says “It was time to bring back the 60’s type of
music, as our homage to that era. The movie is a natural
extension of the songs we have been writing and recording.
It is a believable, likeable story that has wide-ranging
appeal.”
The dialogue is sweet and funny. “We’re here to conquer
America and become wildly rich and famous,” says Ogbourne.
“You do know this is Canada, right?” responds
a Toronto local. “Yes, but we’re kind of like the Beatles
meets, uh, somebody else...”
There is also a Saskatchewan connection to this film. Executive
Producer Tamara Doerksen grew up on a farm on
“In 2009, I launched the children’s charity Lonny’s Smile
Foundation in memory of my brother Lonny, who passed
away in 1971 at the age of five, at the Hospital for Sick
Children in Toronto after surgery to correct a congenital
heart defect,” says Doerksen. “In 2012, Murray Foster
became the host of our annual benefit rock concert.”
It was a good match. In 2013, Foster asked Doerksen
to lead the fundraising efforts for his debut feature film.
As Executive Producer of the film, Tamara created an
innovative, multi-faceted fundraising strategy to collect
$200,000 in private investment funding. Then, she went
on CBC’s Dragons’ Den show and successfully pitched
her movie in front of over two million viewers.
The film has been well-received at festivals worldwide
including the Whistler Film Festival, and the Shanghai
