Dear Students and Host Families,
Quite a wild, winter so far, don’t you think?
We began with lots of wind, rain and flooding.
Just when you thought everything was cleaned
up and back to normal…down went the temperature
and along came the ice. And just so you wouldn’t
get too relaxed and comfortable; more cold weather,
snow and ice. For our students who normally live
south of the 30° Parallel; all this snow is new
and fun and oh boy….sledding! So Cool!
AHHHH!!! SNOW!!!!!
Students, those of you who have begun new classes…good luck and have fun. The first or second report
cards are coming out and you have a good idea how the American schools work. For some of you it is
different and difficult. Please ask your host family, schoolmates and teachers for help. Everyone wants to
help you succeed; if you also want to give it your best. For some of you, the schools are not so hard and this
gives you time to do an excellent job on your work, and also to participate in sports, clubs, music, arts and
volunteerism. Make this year in America the best that you can. You can make it happen, that everyone you
meet will say, “Wow, did you meet that guy/girl from ______? They are so cool. I hope I can go to their
country some day.” LEAVE A POSITIVE IMPRESSION BEHIND!
Host Families, you have learned so much. Maybe even a few things new about teenagers. How they can all
be the same, no matter where they were born. And then again, how different people of the same age can
think BECAUSE they were raised in a different culture. Thank you again host families for your joy,
patience, car rides, forgiveness, support, attendance at school functions, smiles and appreciation shown to
your students.
We are placing new students right now for the 2007/2008 school year. If you, your neighbor, family member
or friend would like to host; please contact your AC or me right away.
The State Capitol Trip is fast approaching.
Please share the flyer enclosed. Let us know if you’re coming!!!
Students….By now all of you have been busy getting involved in your schools and
communities. Adjusting to this new life takes some time. Remember to spend a majority
of your evenings and weekends with your host family. They made it possible for you to
be here. Having fun with your new friends is very important, but always check with your
family before making plans. Speak with your family daily, ask questions, share your
thoughts.
Families….Dividing your time between your own daily activities, family members,
including your student can be a challenge. But a fun one! Please try to have a family
calendar available so each person can look and see what is coming up. Weekly family
meetings are helpful in some situations: to discuss plans, compliment good deeds, air
out differences and anything else that may come up. Sometimes it’s hard to find the
time to talk. It can be as easy as turning off the TV, visiting at dinner or before bed.
Dear Students, February 9, 2007
Enclosed you will find the information regarding our weekend at Camp Casey on beautiful Whidbey Island. Past
students have told us this weekend is one of the highlights of their year in the USA.
Camp Casey is a former military camp and is located on a lovely beach. The grounds are very large with areas to
walk, play sports or just relax. The students will be housed in dormitory style housing. Of course the girls will be in
one dormitory and the boys in another. Students are not allowed in each other’s dorms. Beds are in an open space and
everyone will share the bathrooms. The dormitories are heated. Students must bring their own bath supplies, sleeping
bags and pillows. Clean up of the dormitories is expected by all students!
Food will be served in a large “mess” hall. We all have fun making the food together; it is a great chance to get to
know other students. ALL STUDENTS will help with food preparation and clean up. Assignments will be given and
everyone is expected to participate.
On Saturday, we may take the ferry over to Port Townsend or stay in Oak Harbor for their festival. You will be able to
make your lunch or purchase food in town.
On Saturday night, we will have a “talent” show, with everyone performing. You will have part of Friday night and
part of Saturday to put something together (skits, songs, dance, sport demo…) so, make sure you start thinking of ideas
now. You can also bring musical instruments, costumes, etc. The “talent” show has always been one of the highlights
of our weekend. No one needs to have a special talent, just a willingness to have fun and participate.
We share the weekend with some of the CHI students from northern Washington and Oregon, so you will have the
opportunity to meet students from many countries.
You must tell your teachers and/or counselors NOW that you will be out of school on Friday, April 20 th . Make sure
you have permission from your host family too!!
The Camp Casey Weekend is a special time for students to be together and have the time to relax and be yourselves.
We expect rules to be obeyed for your safety and for everyone to treat each other with respect and consideration. Keep
in mind that the adults who go along, do so voluntarily. This is not part of anyone’s job.
I look forward to seeing you there, getting to know many of you and having a wonderful and memorable weekend.
Don’t forget to send in your signed forms along with a check or money order now.
Warmly,
Jennie M. Fouts Area Administrator
