MAY 2008
Hello Students
and Host
Families,
90 students from
Oregon and Washington
(actually from around
the world) had a great
weekend at Camp Casey
on Whidbey Island. We
endured a bumpy ferry
crossing, wind, rain,
snow, hail and finally
some sun. The talent
show was amazing and
some of the students
will perform again at our
Farewell Party. The
boys had to move
dormitories at 1:00am
because of a chemical mishap; that was scary! We explored the bridge, trails and beach at
Deception Pass and took some great pictures. The students have written that the weekend was
great fun, they met people from many countries, were able to speak their native language, liked the
food, didn't like the food, never slept, came home tired and wished we could do it again. Camp
Casey is always one of the highlights of our year and I am so happy the students have lots of new
and fun memories.
Look inside the newsletter for some pictures and in color, online, in a week or two, at
www.chinet.org. Go to Academic Year Program/regions/Washington/South/Olympia.
Students and families you have just a few days, weeks or a month left together. Spend some time
together remembering the good times, what you have all learned, the laughs, the tears, the firsts
and what you will remember after it's over...but is it over? You now have friends for life around the
world. Keep the communication going after the departure. Keep in touch by phone, email or 'oh my'
by snail mail.
We will miss you!
olunteering has a long and proud
Vhistory in America. Our roots in
service extend back to the first
pioneers, when colonists had to ban together
to overcome the challenges of surviving and
adjusting to a new land. Since the time of
the formation of our nation, Americans have
volunteered to help each other in times of
war, tragedy, and need. (pointofflight.org)
Early one cold March morning, Academic
Coordinator Sarah Jensen introduced some
students, friends and families to a “hands
on” effort, volunteering for Habitat for
Humanity. “We stripped foundations in the
rain and mud. It was wonderful for us to
contribute in a positive way to the
community.”
Habitat for Humanity is a global organization
that provides affordable housing to families
in need through volunteer efforts, and local
chapters.
Currently, Habitat for Humanity
International is asking for donations that
will help to rebuild homes in China that were
damaged and destroyed in the area of the
recent earthquake. For more information on
helping, please see http://www.habitat.org/
