WELCOME TO AMERICA!
October is almost here. Can you believe you have been here now one month or
more? Has it gone by fast? Yup! And each passing day, week and month are going
to zoom forward. I am amazed and happy at how busy most of you are. So
many of you have made many friends and are learning about our culture and
adjusting your views and responses. Did you read the USA Culture Gram in your
student binder? If you didn’t get one, let your AC know and we can mail it. One
of the many interesting facts about American citizens is our greetings such as the
usual, ‘Hello,’ ‘Hi’ and ‘Nice to meet you.’ Then there is the confusing ‘How are
you?’ You have learned that ‘How are you?’ is not actually a question. It is just a
way that we say Hello. The correct response is ‘Fine’ and then you can move forward
to ask ‘What have you been up to?’ you have to laugh… English is a funny
language.
So what have you been up to? Here’s a list of what some of you are doing: homework
(of course!) football, cheerleading, drama, art, tennis, swimming, camping,
boating, riding on the back of jet skis, cross country, bar-b-ques, smores, golf,
dancing, volunteering, marching band, guitar, drums, tutoring, piano, harp, soccer,
clubs, volleyball and singing. On top of all that I’m proud that so many of
you are helping your host families keep up their homes without being asked such
as: cooking, sweeping leaves already, reading to you little host brothers or sisters,
cleaning or putting away dishes, vacuuming, and painting. Hey, and if none
of these sound like you.. better get busy, involved and helpful! Your host family
is volunteering to help you! Say THANKS by helping around the home, being
part of the family and joining in with their activities. Teach us about your culture,
how to cook food from back home and how to count to ten in your
language. Come on host families, this is a cultural exchange, it’s time for
you to learn about other cultures in this world of ours!
Welcome to the USA! We are glad you are here! ~ Jennie
This was taken in July 2011 in Japan
with my host parents, who
hosted me as an exchange student
in Nagano back in 1999. We have
stayed in touch over the past 12
years and they are like my real
family. I was in Japan for my host
sister’s wedding and they still call
me their daughter.
I was listed in the wedding program
as “sister of the bride.” I
really feel that I would not be the
person I am today if not for these
people ~ this is why I do what I
do!
