February 2 nd
1986 was
a day that
would become
etched on my brain
for the rest of my
life. Helloween, Celtic
Frost and Grave Digger
were due to play
the Markthalle, Hamburg,
Germany on a
Noise Records triple
bill. I was already a
big fan of the Pumpkin
Men, having been
mightily impressed by
their six-track debut
EP Helloween, and
the Walls of Jericho
albums toxic slice
of Germanic Power/
Speed Metal. But how
would they fare live?
Every hair on my neck
stood up as the band
launched into Ride the
Sky—sheer adrenalin
came pouring off the
stage— the powerhouse
drumming of Ingo
Schwichtenberg, the
delightful bass runs of
Markus Grosskopf and
the hypnotic dual lead
guitars of Messrs. Kai
Hansen and Michael
Weikath were almost,
dare I say it, operatic
in their delivery! And
it just got better, as
the hysterical Gorgar
followed. Hansen
snarled 'Gorgar will
eat you', while the
main riff chugging
away in the background
was very remi-

extreme Long Live the King, Deris’
musical tribute to Ronnie James
Dio, and the social criticism in
the powerful, melodic and epic
If a Mountain Could Talk. The
enchanting, lyrical The Sage, The
Fool, The Sinner links to orchestral
sounds and the psychedelic in My
Sacrifice, while the epic anthem that closes the album
is Far in the Future.
Back on the road, the 7 Sinners world tour saw the
guys accompanied by a band who took their creative
influence from Helloween, and is another great
reference point for European power metal:
Stratovarius.

tHE DESERt, tHE FORtRESS,
tHE KiNGDOM, tHE LEGEND
Helloween launched Straight out of Hell in January 2013,
again under the production glare of Charlie Bauerfeind.
As with the previous ‘generational trilogies’ created by the
different line-ups of Helloween (Walls, Keeper I and Keeper
II in the 1980s; Master, Better and Time in the 1990s), we
can regard this new album as the creative and evolutionary
continuation of the previous Gambling with the Devil
and 7 Sinners.
and the way it represents
each member,
means this is a very
compact album in
terms of creativity,
with a truly
remarkable
production.
The quintet
gradually
left behind
the dark
and gloomy
feeling on
Gambling, as they
blatantly explored the
modern, progressive sound
delivered on 7 Sinners.
Again, despite showing a different
colour and musical landscape,
the band never
neglected their trademark
approach on
the epic pieces
and hymns here.
There’s a powerful
rhythmic b a s e ,
ultrafast changes of rhythm
and frenzied twin guitar breaks. The unique personality
that emerges from the band as regards composition,

The quartet of songwriters comprising Weikie,
Andi, Sascha and Markus again raise expectations
after those years of tireless creative
contributions.
The masterpiece has an impressive
opening tale with the progressive,
mystical Nabataea. The composition
evokes this legendary kingdom that
was discovered in the early twentieth
century and is the origin of
many myths and legends, as
well as Petra’s Secret, while
hiding us behind a musical
cliff. Nabataea is a unique
creative piece with musical
reminiscences, and
we can hear several
independent melodic
developments in the
course of its short
seven minutes.
The soaring creation and the most overwhelming track
on the new album is entitled Burning Sun. It is a complex,
direct and hymnal track written by Weikie, with elegant
instrumental arrangements full of beauty. It is sharp and
pure, as are Sascha’s World of War, Markus’ Far from the
Stars, or Andi’s Live Now! and Waiting for the Thunder.
The array of musical colours displayed by the impressive
Hold Me in Your Arms, Straight out of Hell, Asshole,
Years, Make Fire Catch the Fly and Church Breaks Down
has been shaped into a monumental album, where the
band make each idea work, without cracks or bumps.
This is improved still further by an immeasurably broad
pitch range in Andi’s performance on vocals. And there's
a fitting tribute to the memory of Jon Lord through the
wonderful rendition of Burning Sun (Hammond Version),
included as a B-side on the CD.
With positive fan and media recognition, Helloween
set out on a successful world tour, recalling a highlight
from their own history by revisiting the Hellish
Rock Tour along with Gammaray together on the same
stage.

Now 30 years have passed
since those eager, visionary
teenagers started
their journey with their
first official
recording, and
in May 2015
Hellow
e e n
will released their long-awaited 15 th studio album entitled
My God-Given Right. Together with their successful team of
collaborators, our tireless band recorded the entire album
between October 2014 and February 2015 at their own Mi
Sueño Studio in Tenerife.
As with their seven previous works, their long-term producer
Charlie Bauerfeind handled the whole production and every
recording duty. Helloween have also returned to the German
record label Nuclear Blast, a cooperation that had been
suspended since the release of Rabbit Don't Come Easy in
2003.
In addition to this, Martin Häusler brings back to us his mastery
as a designer and illustrator by presenting us a stunning
cover in full 3D, with a groundbreaking choice of colour
palette, dominated by white with slight contrasts of blue
and shiny elements. In line with the album's title, it seems
to lead us to a new beginning full of light, fresh energy and
purpose, like those pumpkin robots ready to march. Just in
a simple way, direct and thrilling, like a virginal blank page.

MONSTERS OF ROCK

ANDREAS DERIS was born in Karlsruhe on 18 August 1964. He is the current vocalist and one of the main songwriters
for Helloween.
Additionally, he co-founded the German melodic metal band Pink Cream 69, in which he was the lead singer. He
also has an active solo career, as well as his own recording studio in Tenerife called Mi Sueño.
Deris started to sing in his first band, Paranoid, when he was 15 years old, changing the band’s
name to Nameless some years later. He stayed in this band along with his school friend and
drummer Ralf Maurer.
In late 1984 Andi Deris joined a band called Dragon with the two brothers Bruno and Oscar Di
Blasio (Di Blasio Bros) on guitar and Bernd and Stefan Lüddemann on bass and drums. After
playing live concerts in the Karlsruhe area, they went to Edo Zanki’s Studio in Karlsdorf
and to Arco Studio, Munich to record their first demo with producer Tony Monn. In 1986,
Bruno and Oscar Di Blasio, together with Andi Deris, met the Italian bass player Daniel
De Niro and... Kymera was born! Ralf Maurer alias “Ralph Mason” was “again” recruited
as the band’s new drummer. After a few concerts, Ralf quit Kymera and was replaced
by the talented young drummer Kosta Zafiriou.
That early friendship between Andi Deris and Kosta led to the formation of Pink
Cream 69 early in 1987. The original line-up was Dennis Ward, Kosta Zafiriou,
Alfred Koffler and Deris. They became popular enough to attract interest from
numerous record companies, ultimately choosing to sign with CBS (now known
as Sony Music) and toured in Europe, America and Japan, recording 3 successful
albums.
In 1993 Michael Kiske left Helloween and was replaced by Deris. The new
Helloween line-up recorded Master of the Rings, a departure from the progressive
rock sound of Chameleon and a return to their classic power metal
sound. Deris immediately became the primary songwriter for the band together
with Weikath.
Deris then recorded his first solo album Come in from the Rain. The album
contained some power metal material such as The King of 7 Eyes, but
the album is remembered for its experimental side with more mellow
and mid-tempo material. Deris sang and played guitar, accompanied
by Peter Idera, Ralph Maison and Gisbert Royder.
Besides Helloween, Deris is a very active collaborator in parallel
projects. He provided the lead vocals for some songs in Ayreon
and Rage’s albums and he sang with an ensemble of singers in
the 20 Years Anniversary Song by the band Axxis.
He appeared together with Uli in the Tribute to Rainbow album
with the song Catch the Rainbow, and he sings with Angry
Anderson and Lemmy Kilmister on the Saxon anthem I’ve
Got to Rock to Stay Alive.
In 2010 he recorded guest vocals with the band Wicked
Sensation for a duet in My Turn to Fly. In 2011 he
appeared in the duet Black Widow with the vocalist
of Eden’s Curse on their Trinity album. In addition,
he worked on the charity project “Help! For Japan
EP” where he sang along with other well-known
metal players such as former Helloween singer
Michael Kiske.
He also works as a producer in his own studio, producing
Tenerife-based band Meridian Zero’s first album
Doors of Creation and Esclavitud’s album Condenados
Al Paraíso.

INGO
SCHWICHTENBERG
INGO SCHWICHTENBERG was born in Hamburg
on 18 May 1965. He was one of the
founding members of Helloween and was
famous in professional terms for his highenergy
drumming, but also for his sense of
humour on the personal side. The members of
Helloween gave Ingo the nickname “Mr. Smile”,
because he was hardly ever seen without
a smile on his face.
Living with and for Helloween, Ingo was sadly
ejected from the band in 1993 during the
tour for the album Chameleon. The dismissal
was reportedly due to Ingo’s dependence
on harmful substances to treat his illness.
Ingo also suffered from schizophrenia, and
his refusal to take his medication would lead
to bizarre episodes such as uncontrollable
sobbing, which made it impossible for him to
take the stage.
Additionally, Ingo was apparently somewhat
dissatisfied with the band’s musical direction
as well. According to an anecdote by Michael
Weikath, remembering his friend, Ingo usually
called the song Windmill “Shitmill”.
After his ejection from the band, Ingo Schwichtenberg
slid further and further into his
schizophrenic episodes, which sadly culminated
in his suicide on 8 March 1995, when
he jumped in front of a subway train.
His friend Kai Hansen dedicated the song
Afterlife from Gammaray’s album Land of
the Free to Ingo. In addition, Michael Kiske
makes a tribute to Ingo with the track
Always, on his first solo album Instant
Clarity, and Helloween dedicated the entire
The Time of the Oath album to the loving
memory of Ingo.
Together we went through both beautiful and
rough times. Your place in Helloween’s
history will be forever. Our memories
remain as well as our gratitude.
