44 Pre-College experiences. Life experiences! OUR SCHOOL Florence University of the Arts (FUA) is a consortium composed of higher education institutions. Academic classrooms are located throughout Florence’s city center in historical palaces equipped with the most updated technologies and equipment including free internet access. FUA is made up of the following: APICIUS International School of Hospitality DIVA Digital Imaging and Visual Arts FAST Fashion and Accessory Study and Technologies sQuola Centre for Contemporary Italian Studies SAS School of Arts and Sciences YOUR CURRICULUM MAJOR COURSES: 3:00pm–5:30pm 11 classes on both 21 and 28 day programs CULTURAL ENRICHMENT WORKSHOPS: 9:45am–11:45am 8 workshops on both 21 and 28 day programs CHOOSE ONE MAJOR COURSE: STUDENTS CHOOSE ONE COURSE ONLY, EITHER FOR CREDIT OR ENRICHMENT. For more detailed course descriptions, please visit http://360studenttravel.com/florence28 COLLEGE CREDIT COURSES On the college credit courses, 360° Student Travel participants are mixed with other students at Florence University of the Arts. A supplementary fee of $575 applies for these courses. INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY This course focuses on updated techniques and how they can be incorporated into classic fine art photography. Learn to master photo software and how to control the scanning of a picture, transparency and negative to make a quality digital print. Elements of photo composition and graphic design, photo history and relationships with other art mediums will also be addressed. FUA’s digital lab is equipped with the most updated computers, software and peripherals. Basic photography experience is helpful. A DSLR camera of at least 12.0 megapixels with an optical zoom lens 3X or more is required. INTRODUCTION TO ITALIAN LANGUAGE Develop your conversation, reading and writing skills. Equal focus is given to grammatical structures, vocabulary and conversation skills. Build your vocabulary to engage in simple but useful everyday conversations thus enhancing and supporting your Italian experience. FASHION DESIGN Acquire a solid foundation in the fundamentals of basic construction, draping techniques, alterations and fitting techniques for apparel. The emphasis of the course is on the importance of proper fit and craftsmanship. Develop and construct design concepts in muslin and soft fabric on the dress form as well as learn basic sewing machine stitches. ART HISTORY This introductory course is for students who have little or no background in the history of Western art. Before examining the beginnings of Renaissance art which took hold in Florence in the early 15th century, you are given a broad overview of Greek and Roman art and architecture, which is fundamental to understanding the cultural revolution of the Renaissance. Emphasis is given to Florentine and Italian art of the 13th and 14th centuries and to the “Golden Age” of the Renaissance Period. Classes include visits to museums, churches and palaces as well as architectural walking tours. FASHION MARKETING You are introduced to marketing and merchandising concepts in fashion retail, with an emphasis on the apparel and accessory industry in Italy. Learn the terminology specific to the field and how to forecast trends. Other topics include: visual merchandising, planning, advertising, roles and components of the primary and secondary markets, different forms of in-store and non-store retail, consumer behavior and profiles, store location and design, and assessing the quality/cost equation of products. On-site visits to fashion retailers are an integral part of this course. ENRICHMENT COURSES These enrichment courses are private and exclusive for 360° Student Travel participants only. DIGITAL PHOTO JOURNAL Use the digital photographic method as a tool to create a visual diary as a record of your interaction with society and the self. Emphasis is on Florence and cultural understanding. The goal is to develop meaningful journals that function at both public and private levels. Visits and walks around Florence and its sites are an integral part of this course. A digital camera of 8.0 megapixels minimum with an optical zoom lens of at least 3X is required. COOKING: THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF ITALY For students with an interest in Italian cooking, classes are interactive and hands-on, and focus on the different aspects of regional food in Italy and the preparation of dishes that distinguish traditional Italian Cuisine. Emphasis is on the history and how food relates to the local lifestyle and culture through introductory lectures. During practical cooking labs, you are introduced to cooking methods, techniques, and preparations utilized in Italian cuisine and learn how to use different ingredients to prepare representative Italian dishes. HEALTH AND WELLNESS Studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet has many health benefits, especially when combined with exercise. This course includes lectures on various forms of physical and lifestyle activities and an overview of their respective health benefits. Visits are included to athletic centers, cooking labs, tastings, field learning and physical activity. 45 CULTURAL ENRICHMENT WORKSHOPS Workshops are private and exclusive to 360° Student Travel. All students will participate together. FLORENCE GUIDED CITY TOUR Tour the center of Florence with a historian to see sights such as the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria. INTRODUCTION TO ITALIAN GASTRONOMY Visit the central food market and historic cafés and food vendors. With tastings of typical products, gain an overview of the social and cultural aspects of typical Italian food products such as extra-virgin olive oil and prosciutto. BASIC ITALIAN PHRASES Learn basic phrases to help your daily interactions with the locals. FASHION – MADE IN ITALY On a walking tour of Via Tornabuoni, the high-end fashion area of Florence, journey through Italian fashion history, with an emphasis on Italian fashion design and designers from the 1950s to the present: Gucci, Ferragamo, Cavalli and Tods. Visit the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum. THE ROLE OF ITALIAN FAMILY BUSINESS IN THE ECONOMY Visit the Oltrarno area and an artisan workshop to explore the role of artisanship and small family businesses in the Italian economy. GALLERIA DELL’ACCADEMIA On a guided tour, explore the home to Michelangelo’s Statue of David. THE ITALIAN SOCCER EXPERIENCE Enjoy an introduction to ‘calcio’, its history, rules, and the personalities – players, trainers and managers, who have shaped the game. Visit the Museum of Soccer at Coverciano and the world-renowned coaching school. Show off your skills during an optional game of soccer at a local facility under the supervision of the FUA soccer coach. THE IMPORTANCE OF PASTA IN THE ITALIAN DIET Learn to make fresh egg pasta with various accompanying sauces during this hands-on workshop. Work in groups to prepare the menu and dine on your creations at the end of the lesson. OUR HOME: RESIDENCES ricasOLI These are not typical dorms, they are modern residences that quickly become your home away from home! Your residence is exclusive for 360° Student Travel use. It is located steps away from Florence’s most famous site, the Duomo surrounded by cafés, boutiques and parks. Rooms have air conditioning, Wi-Fi and personal work desks.
