BUSINESS: ENTREPRENEURSHIP<br />
Taught by UCLA Extension Instructors<br />
Ever think about one day starting your own<br />
business? This course provides you with tools<br />
and techniques for launching and managing<br />
your own business. Enjoy the opportunity<br />
to develop a proposal for a business of your<br />
choosing and visit a company to understand<br />
and hear firsthand how they got started.<br />
INTRODUCTION TO<br />
PSYCHOLOGY<br />
Taught by UCLA Extension Instructors<br />
What shapes your thoughts and behavior?<br />
This course introduces basic concepts in<br />
psychology and explores the different types<br />
including behavioral, cognitive and clinical<br />
psychology. Through the use of music, film<br />
and in-class activities, discover more about<br />
yourself as you explore topics such as how to<br />
improve emotional intelligence, limitations in<br />
perception, cognitive distortions, and how to<br />
improve memory. Other topics included are<br />
mental illness, stereotyping and prejudice.<br />
INTRODUCTION TO<br />
FILMMAKING WITH THE<br />
NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY *<br />
NYFA instructors with tremendous experience<br />
and training from the nation’s elite film<br />
schools, teach you to write, direct, shoot and<br />
edit. Intensive study of camera operation,<br />
screenwriting and directing, prepare you for<br />
the production day where you enjoy the once in<br />
a lifetime opportunity to shoot a movie on the<br />
Universal Studios backlot. The course concludes<br />
with editing and post-production work.<br />
*There is a supplementary fee of $495 for the<br />
Filmmaking major with the NYFA.<br />

ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />
LANGUAGE (ESL)<br />
This program is designed to increase your<br />
overall fluency through real experiences with<br />
American culture. Improve your vocabulary<br />
and pronunciation, review proper grammatical<br />
structures, and practice your writing skills.<br />
Beyond the classroom, guided field trips<br />
provide you many opportunities to practice<br />
your English in the real world. If attending<br />
a university in the USA is one of your future<br />
goals, then this program is for you!<br />
COMMUNITY SERVICE<br />
Combined Major & Elective<br />
Perform meaningful service in the communities<br />
in and around LA. Projects are finalized in<br />
the spring; those currently planned are nine<br />
days working with the children at the Boys &<br />
Girls Club, and a few days helping to maintain<br />
and beautify facilities at Hope Gardens or the<br />
Salvation Army. You can make a real difference<br />
in the lives of individuals. A certificate<br />
recognizing 60-70 hours of service is issued.<br />
<strong>360</strong>˚ <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Travel</strong> is a Certifying Organization<br />
for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.<br />

INTRODUCTION TO<br />
PHOTOGRAPHY<br />
For anyone with a passion for photography, no<br />
matter your level, we have you covered! Attain<br />
an in-depth knowledge of digital cameras<br />
(shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera modes)<br />
and the basics of composition (lighting,<br />
exposure, framing focus and blur). Beyond the<br />
classroom, the course includes fieldwork in<br />
LA to delve into the art of street photography.<br />
From Venice Beach to the downtown Fashion<br />
District, explore and develop your creativity,<br />
while learning and practicing technical camera<br />
skills. The course also focuses on portraiture, as<br />
you step into a professional studio to learn about<br />
different lighting techniques and hit Hollywood<br />
Boulevard to test your skills. You must supply<br />
your own digital camera.<br />
IMPROV WITH THE<br />
SECOND CITY<br />
This introduction to improv gives you the<br />
opportunity to develop performance & life skills<br />
through game-based activities, exercises and<br />
scene work. Improv is a valuable tool in theater<br />
and also in life. Learn how to create something<br />
from nothing using only your imagination,<br />
collaboration and few simple guidelines.<br />
Explore the principles of “Yes, and”, making<br />
your scene partner look great, letting go of<br />
your original idea in favor or collaborating, and<br />
stepping into the unknown with confidence.<br />
“Dare to Fail!” is not just a useful motto in<br />
improv, it’s useful in life! Improv helps you see<br />
opportunities, rather than obstacles. Second<br />
City is the largest school of improvisation and<br />
sketch comedy in the world. Their alumni<br />
is a who’s who of American comedy. From<br />
Bill Murray to Steve Carell and Tina Fey –<br />
The Second City imprint is felt across every<br />
entertainment medium.<br />

INDEPENDENT WORKOUT<br />
Enjoy access to UCLA’s Recreational facilities.<br />
Plan your work-out regimen including weight<br />
training and cardio to help meet your fitness<br />
goals.<br />
YOGA<br />
Calm your mind, body and spirit! The course<br />
emphasizes improving your flexibility, strength,<br />
breathing techniques and focus. The course<br />
is conducted at both indoor and outdoor<br />
locations. All experience levels are welcome.<br />
COMMUNITY SERVICE<br />
Combined Major and Elective, or as an<br />
Elective only<br />
Service is offered as a combined course for the<br />
full day – see details of that option under Major<br />
courses which results in 60-70 hours of service<br />
performed, or you may volunteer as an elective<br />
only in the afternoons in which case 20 hours<br />
of service are performed. Projects are finalized<br />
in the spring and may include working with<br />
the children at a Boys & Girls Club, helping the<br />
elderly, or other meaningful work that makes a<br />
real difference in the lives of individuals.<br />
SURFING*<br />
Want to hang ten and ride the waves like a<br />
pro? This course heads to Santa Monica Beach<br />
where you learn how to improve balance and<br />
technique and perfect your form in no time. All<br />
levels of ability are welcome.<br />
