BUSINESS: ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Taught by UCLA Extension Instructors
Ever think about one day starting your own
business? This course provides you with tools
and techniques for launching and managing
your own business. Enjoy the opportunity
to develop a proposal for a business of your
choosing and visit a company to understand
and hear firsthand how they got started.
INTRODUCTION TO
PSYCHOLOGY
Taught by UCLA Extension Instructors
What shapes your thoughts and behavior?
This course introduces basic concepts in
psychology and explores the different types
including behavioral, cognitive and clinical
psychology. Through the use of music, film
and in-class activities, discover more about
yourself as you explore topics such as how to
improve emotional intelligence, limitations in
perception, cognitive distortions, and how to
improve memory. Other topics included are
mental illness, stereotyping and prejudice.
INTRODUCTION TO
FILMMAKING WITH THE
NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY *
NYFA instructors with tremendous experience
and training from the nation’s elite film
schools, teach you to write, direct, shoot and
edit. Intensive study of camera operation,
screenwriting and directing, prepare you for
the production day where you enjoy the once in
a lifetime opportunity to shoot a movie on the
Universal Studios backlot. The course concludes
with editing and post-production work.
*There is a supplementary fee of $495 for the
Filmmaking major with the NYFA.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND
LANGUAGE (ESL)
This program is designed to increase your
overall fluency through real experiences with
American culture. Improve your vocabulary
and pronunciation, review proper grammatical
structures, and practice your writing skills.
Beyond the classroom, guided field trips
provide you many opportunities to practice
your English in the real world. If attending
a university in the USA is one of your future
goals, then this program is for you!
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Combined Major & Elective
Perform meaningful service in the communities
in and around LA. Projects are finalized in
the spring; those currently planned are nine
days working with the children at the Boys &
Girls Club, and a few days helping to maintain
and beautify facilities at Hope Gardens or the
Salvation Army. You can make a real difference
in the lives of individuals. A certificate
recognizing 60-70 hours of service is issued.

for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

INTRODUCTION TO
PHOTOGRAPHY
For anyone with a passion for photography, no
matter your level, we have you covered! Attain
an in-depth knowledge of digital cameras
(shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera modes)
and the basics of composition (lighting,
exposure, framing focus and blur). Beyond the
classroom, the course includes fieldwork in
LA to delve into the art of street photography.
From Venice Beach to the downtown Fashion
District, explore and develop your creativity,
while learning and practicing technical camera
skills. The course also focuses on portraiture, as
you step into a professional studio to learn about
different lighting techniques and hit Hollywood
Boulevard to test your skills. You must supply
your own digital camera.
IMPROV WITH THE
SECOND CITY
This introduction to improv gives you the
opportunity to develop performance & life skills
through game-based activities, exercises and
scene work. Improv is a valuable tool in theater
and also in life. Learn how to create something
from nothing using only your imagination,
collaboration and few simple guidelines.
Explore the principles of “Yes, and”, making
your scene partner look great, letting go of
your original idea in favor or collaborating, and
stepping into the unknown with confidence.
“Dare to Fail!” is not just a useful motto in
improv, it’s useful in life! Improv helps you see
opportunities, rather than obstacles. Second
City is the largest school of improvisation and
sketch comedy in the world. Their alumni
is a who’s who of American comedy. From
Bill Murray to Steve Carell and Tina Fey –
The Second City imprint is felt across every
entertainment medium.

You may choose this leadership course as
either your major or your elective. See the
description under Major Courses.
INDEPENDENT WORKOUT
Enjoy access to UCLA’s Recreational facilities.
Plan your work-out regimen including weight
training and cardio to help meet your fitness
goals.
YOGA
Calm your mind, body and spirit! The course
emphasizes improving your flexibility, strength,
breathing techniques and focus. The course
is conducted at both indoor and outdoor
locations. All experience levels are welcome.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Combined Major and Elective, or as an
Elective only
Service is offered as a combined course for the
full day – see details of that option under Major
courses which results in 60-70 hours of service
performed, or you may volunteer as an elective
only in the afternoons in which case 20 hours
of service are performed. Projects are finalized
in the spring and may include working with
the children at a Boys & Girls Club, helping the
elderly, or other meaningful work that makes a
real difference in the lives of individuals.
SURFING*
Want to hang ten and ride the waves like a
pro? This course heads to Santa Monica Beach
where you learn how to improve balance and
technique and perfect your form in no time. All
levels of ability are welcome.
