MONEY MINDS:
FINANCIAL LITERACY COUNTS!
Finance-savvy YBS volunteers bring figures to life
Yorkshire Building Society Group (YBS) have joined forces with
The EBP to enable colleagues of the Group to deliver a creative
and engaging financial literacy toolkit in schools, set to launch in
January 2016.
The YBS Financial Education comprises ten programmes, across all
key stages and ages from 5 to 19 years. With training and resources
from The EBP, YBS volunteers will bring their knowhow and love of
numbers to focused workshops delivered in schools during normal
class-time.
… to a very special edition of Term Talk!
At The EBP we don’t do what we do for recognition – our main
motivation will always be the needs of young people and the
educational institutions that serve them. Yet it is more than
gratifying to be recognised as one of the most successful social
enterprises in the country, with the NatWest SE100 Growth
Champion award! See page 5 for more detail on this and other
recent honours.
This term comes in the wake of The EBP’s biggest summer yet,
not only in the record-beating NCS programmes, but in every
department across our organisation. Our growing team is busier
than ever, and these pages are bursting with news – the hardest
part is deciding what to tell you first! For me, one of the proudest
achievements is over 90,000 hours of community social action
projects from our NCS programmes (see below).
The EBP was a key player in the development of the one me charity,
and remains a strong supporter of this initiative to help young
people access opportunities to fulfil their potential. See more
about its journey so far on page 11.
There’s plenty more to discover in Term Talk, so read on! If you
POLICY POWWOW
Karen Ponulak looks over the latest legislation
Karen has managed contracts for The
EBP with scrupulous efficiency and
financial probity since 2013. Having
previously served on a Department
of Education policy team, she soon
appreciated the importance of
understanding legislative changes to The
EBP’s partners and clients, and has now
added the title Policy Officer to her role.
As Karen puts it, “Government policy
provides the contextual backdrop to
everything The EBP and its partners
in education do. Understanding
it directs us toward current best
practice, and ensures we leverage the
maximum statutory support for our
programmes. But it can be hard to
juggle everyday responsibilities with
staying up to date and complying
with the latest developments. That’s
where I can help.”
She is eager to provide insight and
inside information on the world of UK
educational policy, both to The EBP
colleagues and practitioners at the
institutions we serve.
Briefly, recent trends that have caught
Karen’s eye include the continuing
social justice agenda, with a focus
on traineeships and apprenticeships.
The EBP’s role as a bridge between
educational institutions and the
business community chimes well with
the government’s preference for careers
guidance to be delivered by employers.
Despite the emphasis on academic
subjects heralded by the English
Baccalaureate, policy direction continues
to support character education, as
promoted by NCS and Step up to Serve,
plus improvements in personal, social,
health and economic education (PSHE)
and sex and relationships education (SRE).
Because of the rapid shifts in the policy
landscape, Karen is committed to
providing this information in real time,
in a blog that users will be able to access
via The EBP website and social media
accounts from January 2016.
TALENT ON SHOW
Harvesting highlights of the Lincolnshire Show Schools’ Challenge
Run jointly by The EBP and the Lincolnshire
Agricultural Society (LAS), the 2015 Schools’
Challenge introduced students from 44
primary, secondary and special schools,
to innovative thinking for and greater
understanding of the agricultural industry.
Worked on for months with the help of
expert mentors appointed by LAS, school
entries are based on food production,
local community or sustainability themes,
linked to areas of school curricula. On
judging day, entries were displayed
and presented to an eminent panel.
The EBP professional development day
for teachers and careers advisors was a
key component of this year’s programme.
The day aimed to increase understanding
of food, farming, the local community
and sustainability within the school
context – including curricular links,
best practice examples and networking
opportunities with staff from other
schools and organisations.
Among the five workshops, teachers’
highest evaluations went to Bobbie
Harvey’s lively presentation of farming
and countryside education, followed
by Juliane Caillouette Noble from the
Jamie Oliver Food Foundation and
Stuart Garner from major local employer
Branston Ltd. Two new challenges will be
introduced to the 2016 programme based
on feedback and requests.
To see how the 2016 show programme
could broaden students’ and teachers’
horizons, our networking meeting
on 19 January is an excellent opportunity
to meet food and farming professionals,
industry mentors and fellow education
professionals, plus hear expert speakers
on best practice and guidance for
the challenges.
REWARDING
BUSINESS
The EBP punches above its weight – and here’s the proof!
The NatWest SE100 Index recognises social
enterprises that demonstrate some of the best
business practice within the sector. The EBP is thrilled
to announce that it has been named SE100 Growth
Champion 2015 – taking its place among the UK’s
most dynamic social enterprises. The award specifically
recognises sustainable and diverse business models,
so this win bodes well for The EBP’s longevity and
continued success!
For more information on the SE100 Index and
Awards go to http://se100.net. Watch a video about
the journey that brought The EBP to this point, at
https://youtu.be/pstWvVXLsj8
The EBP is also a finalist in The Social Enterprise of
the Year category for the 2015 Lloyds Bank National
Business Awards. Chosen from hundreds of entrants
across 18 categories, winners will be revealed at a
glittering awards ceremony on 10 November.
As befits a social enterprise committed to developing
human potential, The EBP has received a bronze
Investor in People (IIP) award. Staff interviewed
for the IIP report said they felt proud to work for The
EBP and committed to its success, that everyone is
empowered to play their part and contributions are
recognised and valued.
Finally, the Merlin Standard promotes sustainable
excellence within supply chains. The award recognises
The EBP’s commitment to fair treatment, and adherence
to four fundamental and integrated principles of supply
chain design, commitment, conduct and review.
I am so proud that The EBP has been judged to be at the top
of the UK’s social enterprise ladder, but I am not surprised
given the skills and dedication of our amazing team! This
award is in recognition of a lot of hard work from our staff
and supporters.
‘BEST IN CLASS’
EMPLOYABILITY
Skills Tree becomes Communitree and launches class-time programmes
For more information on
Communitree and Brand New
You contact Laura Hopton
on 01522 574113 or
laura.hopton@eblo.org.uk
Employers often cite lack of work
experience as the greatest barrier to hiring
young people. Communitree matches
high-calibre applicants to excellent work
opportunities, so young people enhance
their experience and career prospects,
while employers get access to trained,
motivated and work-ready candidates.
By connecting young people and
employers via a single platform,
Communitree simplifies the engagement
process. Working closely with participants
to understand their skills, qualities and
needs, Communitree helps them find
stepping-stones along the road to success.
With the help of local employers, it invests
in building a strong future workforce.
Introducing class-time programmes
Communitree has developed six
pick-and-mix class-time sessions,
designed to provide students with an
enhanced toolkit of skills relevant to
education and employment.
• In Skills Check Career Guidance,
students calculate their skills, interests,
qualities and strengths, then research
job profiles to learn where they might fit
in the labour market.
• Marketing Me allows students
to evaluate examples of personal
statements in terms of their value as
persuasive writing, then begin building
their own for use in UCAS forms, job
applications and cover letters.
• Examining real-life examples of CVs
to find their preferred candidate,
students see them from an employer’s
perspective. Our CV writing workshop
with a twist is called In Their Shoes!
• In Search and Succeed participants
explore job search techniques, choose
an advertisement that interests them,
identify the main points within the text
and use them to build their applications.
• With college, university, work experience
or employment interviews in mind,
Operation Interview guides students
on preparation techniques, common
interview questions and how to decide
on the best answers.
• Let’s Get Digital explores online
footprints and internet safety, with a
particular focus on social media. The
potential dangers of life online are
covered alongside effective digital tools
that can support student success.
BRAND NEW PRODUCT: ‘BRAND NEW YOU’
Self-marketing inspiration for the contemporary jobs market
The EBP’s Access
Employability
brand provides a
range of interactive
workshops,
designed to
improve students’
future prospects
and supplement
the traditional model of work experience.
Among the latest workshop titles, Brand
New You recognises that personal
branding has never been more important
to a young person’s journey into
employment. During the programme,
students explore self-marketing methods
to improve their overall image and create
good impressions ahead of future careers.
The Brand New You component of the
Goals for Life day at Sir Robert Pattinson
Academy in North Hykeham this year was
an excellent showcase. Year Nine student
Troy Milstead observed that, “It was a very
interesting, fun, hands-on experience, that
made you think about the impression you
are making, what an employer expects and
how you need to prepare.”
The workshop was very interactive,
which kept the students engaged.
It gave them the chance to think
about the importance of first
impressions and the need to get
it right. Students found it to be a
positive experience.
YOUNG, GREEN
TO THE COMMUNITY
Inspired by graffiti and painted by Sleaford
artist Richard Knight, The EBP’s Young Baron
statue raised £5,500 for The Trussell Trust
food bank charity. It was purchased by Daniel
Charles Construction Ltd (Director Mr Dan
Ingall, pictured right), who then donated the
statue to William Farr School.
6
The EBP Young Baron is now a
dramatic and impressive feature
in our entrance lobby and his
arrival was totally amazing and
unexpected. We are really grateful
Destination Anywhere takes students ‘out’ of themselves – all the way to Butlins!
With this activity programme, students
directly experience the processes
involved in delivering a quality leisure
event. The EBP is thrilled to be working
work with an iconic local venue that
exemplifies professionalism in the
Lincolnshire tourist industry.
On the day, school teams will participate
in interactive workshops to expand their
understanding of the tasks required
to organise and market an event,
developing strategies and pitching
ideas, taking factors such as travel,
accommodation, costs, promotions and
language requirements into consideration.
Expert Butlins personnel will support
students through their activities,
emphasising transferable skills
such as teamwork, communication,
problem solving, decision-making
and financial planning.
Finally, teams will make presentations
about their own input, which will be
assessed by industry representatives
based on creativity, quality of
teamwork and confidence of
delivery, with prizes awarded
to the winning team.
3 February
2016
All participants will receive a certificate
recognising their achievement, and will
complete evaluation forms at the start
and end of the day, to monitor their
progress and skills development.
AN ASPIRATIONAL BUSINESS
Young Traders activity day inspires deep thinking at The Deepings School
Young Traders is designed to develop
awareness of what it takes to start your
own business. Student teams come up
with their own business ideas, assign
work roles, devise a budget and business
plan, before presenting the results to each
other, their instructors and entrepreneurs
from the local business community.
In early summer, 86 Year Eight students
at The Deepings School took part in a
Young Traders day led by Community
Coordinator Rosella Gugliotta. Local
business people Ian Anderson of online
sports goods retailer Cricket Deal Direct,
Andy from RapStrap and Alison from
Cloud Nine presented, and supported
the students’ process.
Ian praised the “drive and style of delivery”
that inspired a high level of interaction
on the course. He described the students
as highly focused with a great desire to
succeed and competitive spirit and was
deeply “impressed at the tenacity and
creativity in such a young group”.
Reinforcing the school’s enterprise ethos
A longstanding user of The EBP’s
services, The Deepings School is
committed to developing enterprise and
employability skills as a complement to
successful academic learning. Enterprise
activities are embedded across the
curriculum and the Young Traders day
was a good example. Head of Welland
College Mark Presneill outlined the
programme and gave an overview of the
‘enterprise’ concept during a special Year
Eight assembly a few days beforehand.
Careers and Events Manager Linda Taylor
noted that students’ understanding of
business was clearly increased, and that
the final student presentations, “clearly
demonstrated how their confidence and
awareness had improved… Including
representatives from local businesses
was a great idea and helped further
develop our community links”.
Pleased with the efficiency and
effectiveness of The EBP’s team, Linda
confirmed that the school will deliver the
programme again to all 260 Year Eight
students later this academic year.
FABULOUS FREYA
NCS brings new opportunities to one special girl
As a person with Downs Syndrome, Freya
required additional support to enable her
to participate fully in the NCS summer
2014 programme. Her anxious mother,
Caroline, asked The EBP for reassurance
that Freya would be safe and happy within
the mixed group.
After a face-to-face meeting and an
intensive series of discussions, the NCS
cohort lead allocated an additional
mentor to Freya’s group to provide
one-to-one support. Caroline was given
contact numbers for all staff, with clear
assurances that programme tasks would
be made appropriate for Freya’s academic
and physical abilities.
Freya’s family were amazed at how
well she settled in and integrated with
the group:
Freya thoroughly enjoyed NCS.
We could see a difference in
her confidence, which grew
and grew during the two
weeks – she really blossomed!
Freya really thrived, mixing
with a new group of friends,
and we felt she benefitted
massively from just being with
peers outside a ‘special needs’
environment. NCS has been an
amazing opportunity for Freya
and we hope she will have the
opportunity to benefit from it
in the future.”
Caroline
Freya’s mum
Now a strong advocate for the
programme, Caroline’s letter in the
Downs Syndrome Association newsletter
encouraged fellow parents to have the
confidence to allow their young people to
take part in NCS. She also accompanied
The EBP’s Young People’s Team to
recruitment sessions at Sandon School
in Grantham where Freya is a student.
Happily, another student with Downs
Syndrome has already said ‘yes to NCS’
this year.
Freya reports her experience of NCS as
“fantastic”, proudly pointing out photos
of herself with her support mentors;
smiling at the happy memories.
PARLIAMENTARY
FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES
Record-breaking NCS programmes attract MP visitors from across the House
I am inspired to see young
people rising to the NCS
challenge, and choosing to
spend their time and energy
on benefiting others in the
community. NCS is a fantastic
opportunity for young people
to develop the confidence and
skills that will benefit them
within their future studies,
careers and social lives.
Andrew Bridgen MP
Member of Parliament
for North West Leicestershire
National Citizen Service (NCS)
programmes throughout the EM1 region
were honoured by visits from MPs keen
to witness work benefiting both the young
participants and their communities.
Four teams in Leicestershire joined forces
to fundraise for CLASH, a local charity
supporting people with muscular skeletal
conditions. The teams worked together
to create events to raise awareness of this
small but dedicated organisation. They
were fortunate to receive a visit from
the charity’s patron – none other than
Nicky Morgan MP, Parliamentary
Secretary for Education. One team
member commented that, “Meeting
Nicky Morgan was a great opportunity
as we were able to discuss how CLASH is
just as important as bigger charities.”
MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire,
Tom Pursglove visited Catch 22 Northants
Social Action Project at Sandalwood
Court Care Home, where participants ran
activities with residents, including ten pin
bowling on the day of the visit. He was
very interested in participation numbers
for schools in his constituency, and was
keen to include information on NCS in his
next local mailshot.
GAME CHANGER:
NCS DELIVERY
PARTNERS TAKE
TO THE FIELD
Welcoming Lincolnshire Sport and Lincoln City Football Club Sport and Education Trust
The EBP is delighted to announce new
delivery partners for the National Citizen
Service (NCS) programme, Lincolnshire
Sport and Lincoln City Football Club Sport
and Education Trust (LCFC SET).
Government-funded programme NCS
aims to help young people make the
transition from school to university or
the world of work, through activities from
outdoor ‘adventures’ to work and business
challenges, leading into self-directed social
action projects in the community.
Involvement in delivering NCS dovetails
perfectly with both new partners’
aims for community engagement:
Lincolnshire Sport’s main aim is to
increase participation in sport and
physical activity across the county, while
LCFC SET already runs a wide range of
initiatives in the community for people of
all ages and abilities.
It is fantastic for LCFC SET to be
continuing its relationship with
The EBP... Many people ask
why a football club is getting
involved in initiatives such as
NCS, but why wouldn’t we
want to be associated with a
programme that has a positive
impact on so many young
people and can make a huge
difference to many of them?
Paul Hamnett
Trust Manager of Lincoln City FC
Sport & Education Trust
Lincolnshire Sport already runs
programmes and projects to
encourage more young people
to be active... NCS aligns well
with that work, and is the next
step for young people on their
development pathway.
Janet Inman
of Lincolnshire Sport
David Mackintosh MP from Northampton South
met NCS participants on his visit to a social action
project at a community centre he knew well in his old
ward. He also dropped by the Community Café Day at
Northampton University where NCS participants met
charities and community organisations.
Long-time NCS supporter Michael Ellis MP from
Northampton North attended the graduation for the
programme with local delivery partner University
I really want to make a big deal of what
your NCS Young People accomplished – it’s
not only the fundraising, but for young
people to choose to raise awareness of
people with arthritis is truly humbling.
Red STEM Construction Week Spark Engineering Medical Mavericks
CELEBRATING STEM
From flying eggs to healing hands
– Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in action
STEM programmes seek to
inspire interest in the four key
disciplines of science, technology,
engineering and mathematics.
Though the UK has historically been a
leader in these fields, fewer students
have focused on these subjects in recent
years. STEM seeks to challenge this
trend, giving young people – especially
girls – exposure to the fascinating world
of applied sciences.
Project X is a practical exercise hosted
by RAF Waddington. An imaginary
scenario stimulates students to design a
model aircraft that balances speed and
efficiency with precision – using eggs to
represent delicate cargo or passengers.
In Project X 2014, Year Eight students
competed to develop and build aircraft
with release systems to deliver vital
survival equipment to aircrew stranded in
enemy territory. The equipment must be
delivered unbroken and without harming
the waiting ‘recipients’.
Medical Mavericks NHS Roadshow
Held for the first time by The EBP in 2015,
Medical Mavericks is an exciting day of
workshops and talks introducing students
to over 40 NHS careers they may never
have heard of! Participants explore
high-tech medical kit in a fully equipped
mobile hospital, examine procedures and
experience some of the fascinating tasks
involved in these unconsidered careers.
In the ‘Human Guinea Pig Show’
participants follow a patient’s journey
around the NHS, watch real medical
procedures and take part in brilliant live
demonstrations, including recording their
own heart on an ECG, using a mobile
phone to photograph the back of the eye
and an ultrasound to observe bones,
muscles and blood vessels. After the show,
students use that equipment and more in
hands-on ‘inspirations’ workshops.
Spark Engineering Festival: electric
experiences for all in Lincoln Cathedral.
Thanks to The EBP’s knowhow,
the Spark Festival reaches
hundreds of young people,
creating a real sense of pride,
especially in local manufacturing.
aerobatic displays, 20 activities and
exhibits to bring STEM subjects to life,
and Carol Vorderman adding glamour to
the occasion.
The Lincoln Group Training Association
(LGTA) Construction Week is a three-day
event held at Lincolnshire Showground
each October. This is a great opportunity
for students to meet enthusiastic
employers within the construction
industry, who can offer career guidance
in fun and interactive sessions.
The annual Sir Isaac Newton Lecture
is jointly hosted by the Institution of
Engineering and Technology, the Royal
Aeronautical Society, Institution of
Mechanical Engineers and The EBP. Its
primary aim is to give Key Stages Four
and Five students an insight into, and
make them aware of potential career
paths from engineering and sciencerelated
subjects. An invited speaker gives
an educational and inspiring lecture from
their personal experience.
I thought that the lecture was
very inspirational. It made me
think of doing engineering as
a career. I thought it put a fun
spin on science.
Thank you
The EBP is a social enterprise
developing the skills of young
people in communities across the
East Midlands. We are proud to
support young people across the
counties, to build on the skills they
need to thrive.
We would like to thank the 300 primary
schools and more than 250 secondary
schools, special schools and colleges that
participate in The EBP’s services. We also
thank the thousands of local and national
businesses that help us to deliver our
programmes and events.
United by the belief that finance should be
no barrier to ambition, an eminent local
group of trustees created one me to provide
small grants to young people who need help
with opportunities to grow, learn and fulfil
their potential.
Former Managing Director of Ruston Gas
Turbines, Director of UK Trade & Investment
and Chairman of the Energies Industries
Council, Paul Barron CBE spoke from his heart
at the launch. His own story demonstrates
that with a little help, hard work can more than
compensate for lack of privilege:
The EBP is all about
partnership. We look
forward to continuing to
work together with schools,
businesses, agencies and
institutions, providing
support to even more
young people to build
better futures.
ONE ME:
THE JOURNEY SO FAR
Young people can be prevented from achieving
their goals by frustratingly small shortfalls.
Applicants aged 16-25 are therefore encouraged
to apply online at www.one-me.org.uk for
grants between £100 and £1,000 to support
opportunities for education, employability skills,
citizenship and community development.
Fundraising for one me took its first ‘steps’
with a sponsored walk along the Stephen
Langton Trail organised by Karl McCartney
MP, and at time of writing is in the process of
awarding its first grant, to a young man whose
budget fell just over £100 short of accessing
the transport he needs to get to his first job.
