Mentoring is emerging as an ever more important tool to develop
the next generation of UK talent and as you will read in this
edition of Term Talk, The EBP is at the forefront of this movement.
We embrace the positive change that a mentor can have on a young
person’s aspirations and attainment and have seen first-hand the
difference this can make.
We have already seen 19 teenagers graduate from our inaugural
‘Mini Exec Club’ and we will be expanding this and other
mentoring-themed programmes to involve even more young people
throughout the course of the year.
With Project Lumen, supported by The Careers & Enterprise
Company, now up and running we were delighted to receive further
funding from the company to deliver Mission Mentor, a brand new
mentoring programme working with looked after children. You can
read more about this over on page 8.
In addition to our growing number of programmes, 2017 has also
seen us recruit new talent at a senior level. So far this year we have
appointed Nick Brown as our Head of Educational Operations,
Andy Jeffcutt, Head of People Services and Verity Timmins, Head
of Business Growth. We welcome them to The EBP and look
forward to their contribution to our future growth, working with
more businesses, schools and individuals than ever before.
It would be difficult not to mention National Citizen Service
(NCS) which is such an important part of The EBP. This year,
the programme’s growth and increased social impact will continue
as we work with more young people, developing their skills and
helping to make a difference in their local communities.
As the job market becomes ever more competitive and employers
expect more than just academic qualifications from young people,
we will work with more businesses and partners to address these
needs and help Lincolnshire become the best place for a young
person to make the transition from education to employment.
Our work in 2017 will focus even more on developing these skills,
whether through the Lincolnshire Show Schools’ Challenge, the
Lincoln Knights’ Trail Education Programme or one of our other
development projects.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition of Term Talk!
POLICY POWWOW
BUILDING OUR INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY
The EBP’s Policy Advisor
Karen Ponulak
In January the government released the
‘Building Our Industrial Strategy’ green
paper. Introduced by the Prime Minster,
the strategy aims to “help young people
to develop the skills they need to do
the high-paid, high-skilled jobs of the
future.” Industry will play a key role in
post-Brexit Britain, and as a result it is
crucial that our young people have the
right skills to support this growth.
Developing skills is one of the 10 pillars underpinning the
strategy: “...building a new system of technical education to
benefit the half of young people who do not go to university;
boosting STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths)
skills, digital skills and numeracy; and by raising skill levels in
lagging areas.”
The proposed transition year will play an important role in
helping to develop the skills of young people, ensuring that
those who are not ready to go straight into employment or
further study are able to gain the skills they need in order to be
ready for the workplace. The transition year was one of several
proposals included in last year’s Sainsbury Review and Skills
Plan that has been carried forward into the industrial strategy
alongside a radical review of existing vocational qualifications.
The strategy also addresses the need to “empower students,
parents and employers to make confident and informed
choices about their education and career options” whichever
route they take. This is particularly important for those in
disadvantaged areas and puts a spotlight on the need for high
quality careers advice and guidance, demonstrating the key role
that post-16 work experience can play.
From the 2019/2020 academic year 15 new ‘T Level routes’
will be available, replacing the existing 13,000 vocational
qualifications. These will offer a pathway to employment for
students not wishing to pursue A Levels or degrees.
SCHOOLS TO TEACH 21ST CENTURY RELATIONSHIPS
AND SEX EDUCATION
Education Secretary Justine Greening has outlined plans for
compulsory relationships education in primary schools and
relationships and sex education in secondary schools. The new
plans will ensure that children and young people are given the
knowledge and life skills they need.
Ms Greening said: “We need high-quality, age-appropriate
content that relates to the modern world, addressing issues
like cyber bullying, ‘sexting’ and internet safety.”
The Department for Education has said that pupils could be
taught the new curriculum from September 2019.
EMPLOYERS - DID YOU KNOW?
From this summer the reformed GCSEs in English Language,
English Literature and Maths will be graded from 9 to 1 with
other subjects to follow. It is anticipated that fewer students
will achieve a grade 9 than an A*.
FROM THE CLASSROOM
TO THE BOARDROOM
Nick Brown joins The EBP’s senior management team
The EBP is delighted to introduce Nick Brown, its new Head of Educational
Operations. Nick joined The EBP in January and brings a wealth of experience from
the education sector to this newly created post.
Nick’s extensive teaching career spans primary education to A Level and has also
included Assistant Headteacher roles within Lincolnshire and beyond, including The
Priory Academy LSST. He is also a current Senior Examiner and Specialist Leader
in Education.
Nick heads up The EBP’s Schools and National Citizen Service (NCS) teams, and will
also be heavily involved in the development of the Communitree brand. Nick said,
“I’m looking forward to making a difference every day, ensuring students in the area
have the opportunities to which they are justly entitled and maximise their potential.”
If you want to involve your school or business in any of The EBP’s
exciting educational programmes, get in touch with Nick on
THE CHALLENGE
GROWS
This year The EBP celebrates its 10th year delivering the
Lincolnshire Show Schools’ Challenge, an initiative run
jointly with The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society.
To commemorate this special anniversary they have teamed
up with Beeswax Dyson Farming for a brand new challenge.
‘Precision Farming’ is focused on the latest technological
advances in farming and will encourage students to consider
and test the most efficient use of resources to grow their own
crops with a view to challenging themselves to make their yield
more sustainable, a great reflection on the challenges facing
modern farming.
With 10 different food, farming or agriculture focused
challenges, schools are spoiled for choice in selecting the right
challenge for them. The culmination of the challenge will see
all of the schools’ entries showcased at the Lincolnshire Show
on 21st and 22nd June with prizes awarded by expert judges
across the six different categories. There’s still time to enter
the Schools’ Challenge and Edina Trust funding is available to
primary and special schools entering the challenge this year.
To enter the Schools’ Challenge or to request
additional information, please contact Clare Bryan
on 01522 574174 or clare.bryan@the-ebp.co.uk
WATERSIDE SHOPPING CENTRE AND
SIEMENS CHARGE AHEAD TO SPONSOR
THE LINCOLN KNIGHTS’ TRAIL
EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Waterside Shopping Centre and Siemens
have saddled up to sponsor the Lincoln
Knights’ Trail Education Programme.
Organised by The EBP, in partnership
with Wild in Art and Lincoln BIG, the
Education Trail will involve more than
40 primary, secondary and special
schools from across Lincolnshire and
will run alongside this summer’s main
Lincoln Knights’ Trail, forming a mass
participation public art event in the city.
Each participating school has until the
start of June to get their creative juices
flowing and decorate their very own
half-sized knight sculpture, designed and
created by Wild in Art’s Creative Director
Chris Wilkinson in the style of a Lewis
Chess piece. The education knights will
then be brought together at this year’s
Lincolnshire Show on 21st and 22nd June
before they join their larger counterparts,
forming an indoor trail in iconic venues
throughout Lincoln city centre until the
start of September.
As part of their sponsorship, Waterside
and Siemens also have their very own
half-sized knights. Waterside is running
a special competition for one lucky
young person to design their knight,
before Lincoln-based designer and
illustrator Mel Langton brings their
artwork to life. Siemens will be working
with Lincoln UTC, to create a STEM
inspired design to reflect Lincolnshire’s
rich engineering history.
6
Dean Cross, Waterside Centre Manager,
said: “We’re delighted to be able to lend
our support to this year’s Knights’ Trail.
It’s great to be involved in the Education
Programme and we can’t wait to
welcome some of the education knights
to Waterside.”
Neil French from Siemens, said:
“We are really excited to bring science,
technology, engineering and maths
(STEM) to life as we work with Lincoln
UTC to plan and design our knight.
As a pioneering world leader employing
15,000 people in the UK, we are
dedicated to helping enrich and enhance
teaching and learning and to inspire
and engage the next generation of
engineers.”
The EBP is thrilled to be working with
so many Lincolnshire schools on this
fantastic project.
Visit www.knightstrail.com/education
for the full list of participating schools.
KNIGHT WATCH!
The EBP also has its very own full-sized
knight, which will be part of the main
Lincoln Knights’ Trail. They selected
Birmingham based artist Sue Guthrie’s
design, ‘The Knight Has a Thousand
Eyes’. Look out for The EBP’s knight at
the Mayor’s Chair on Steep Hill from
20th May – 3rd September before it is
auctioned for Lincoln homelessness
charity, The Nomad Trust.
CHANGING THE WORLD
ONE YOUNG PERSON AT A TIME
National Citizen Service (NCS) is the fastest growing youth
movement for a generation, and with this phenomenal
growth comes a number of other social benefits. Since 2013,
The EBP has managed NCS in Leicestershire, Lincolnshire,
Northamptonshire and Rutland (an area referred to as EM1).
In this relatively short time we’ve seen it make a huge impact
on thousands of young people and their local communities.
Since its pilot, more than 13,000 young
people have graduated from NCS in the
EM1 region, each contributing 30 hours
of voluntary work to their community.
This means that graduates in the EM1
region have given back almost 400,000
hours of volunteering, fundraising and
campaigning for good causes. The national
picture is even more impressive, with over
seven million hours of social action being
carried out by NCS graduates since 2013
and graduate feedback revealing that past
participants feel more able to make an
impact on the world around them.
This social change is something that
The EBP feels incredibly strongly about,
working with organisations, charities and
community groups to provide high quality
social action projects for young people.
NCS participants have transformed
community spaces, increased the profile
of causes and charities that they feel
passionately about. To continue this and
to ensure that social action has an even
greater impact, The EBP encourages
organisations and groups to get in
touch to discuss potential projects that
could make a positive difference both
to the community and to a group of
young people.
The final word goes to NCS graduates -
9 out of 10 would both recommend
the programme to others and rate their
experience of NCS as being worthwhile -
praise indeed for a programme that The
EBP is proudly delivering across the region.
“ Last summer
teens in the NCS
EM1 region raised
a staggering
£114,000 for
good causes after
dedicating more
than 113,900 hours
to helping their
local community”
ON A MENTORING
MISSION!
The EBP has been successful in securing investment
from The Careers & Enterprise Company for two
of its mentoring programmes, Project Lumen
and Mission Mentor. Both programmes will help
to support young people in Lincolnshire to raise
awareness of the range of careers open to them.
MISSION MENTOR – RAISING LINCOLNSHIRE
TEENAGERS’ ASPIRATIONS INTO ORBIT!
In November last year, The EBP was
named as one of 39 organisations to
benefit from a fund of more than £3.5
million from the government-backed
Careers & Enterprise Company’s
Mentoring Fund, targeting more than
20,000 pupils across the country
who have been identified as ‘hard to
reach’ individuals. This forms part of a
national mentoring campaign, joining
the dots between schools and colleges,
employers, mentoring organisations and
young people.
Mission Mentor is a 1:1 employer
mentoring programme through which
The EBP will work with looked-after
children (young people in care) in
years 8, 9 and 10, who are at risk of
disengaging and dropping out of school.
With support from Lincolnshire County
Council, the programme will allow
young people to benefit from supportive
relationships with mentors from a
variety of businesses and organisations,
inspiring them to strive for a more
positive future. The EBP will match young
people and business mentors based
on their personal characteristics and
compatibility, and mentors will receive
comprehensive training and ongoing
support from our skilled young people’s
team so they are prepared for the journey
ahead.
The EBP has been overwhelmed by the
interest in the project and is delighted to
be working with so many new mentors
from across Lincolnshire. Thank you to
everyone who has given their support to
the programme!
COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE
TO A YOUNG PERSON?
The EBP is always looking for new mentors to inspire the next
generation. If you think you’ve got what it takes to mentor a young
person, please get in touch with Nick Brown on 01522 574100
or nick.brown@the-ebp.co.uk
MENTORING THE FUTURE
An encouraging role model can have a profound effect on a young person’s self-esteem and aspirations.
The EBP works with mentors from a range of Lincolnshire businesses who are all making a huge difference
by offering a small amount of their time to mentoring.
The EBP spoke to three of its mentors about their motivation to help and inspire young people.
Name: Flight Lieutenant Tom Bould
Job Title: Red 6 - Synchro Leader
Organisation: Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team
Programme: Project Lumen
Q: What made you want to become a mentor for The EBP?
As Red Arrows pilots we are very fortunate to be in a position to inspire the next
generation which is something I think is incredibly important. If we can encourage
someone to take an interest in STEM subjects, aviation, follow a career in the military
or challenge themselves to do something they didn’t think was possible, then this is
something we take great pride in.
Q: Did you have any mentors growing up or was there a particular person that
influenced your career choice?
I had teachers at school who were very knowledgeable about career choices but we
had a RAF liaison officer who visited my school who was the most influential; he
explained what opportunities were available at the time to pursue a career in the
Forces and aviation. I feel very fortunate in the career I have and being part of the
Red Arrows; I firmly believe that it was the advice I received when I was younger that
put me on the path to achieving my goals.
Name: John Latham FRSA
Job Title: Director of Deputy Vice Chancellor Projects
Organisation: University of Lincoln
Programme: Mini Exec Club
Q: What did you get out of your involvement in the Mini Exec Club?
It was good to share my work with someone who was keen to learn and see what the
world of work was actually about – and seeing their perceptions change is rewarding.
Q: What advice would you give to prospective mentors?
Embrace the challenge! Don’t be concerned if you think what you do won’t interest
a young person, it almost certainly will. Also, listen to what they get out of the
experience, it may surprise you and their perception might help you to look at your
role in a different way.
Name: Vincent Ramsey
Job Title: Partnerships & Recruitment Officer
Organisation: Access to Music
Programme: Mission Mentor
Q: What are you hoping to get out of the mentoring experience?
I hope to get a much clearer picture of what the needs are of young people from all
aspects of life. It will help me in dealing with them, whilst at the same time I hope
that I can give some guidance back to them.
Q: Why do you think mentoring will make a difference to a young person?
I hope that I can assist in helping someone find their way in what they want to do,
give encouragement, as well as a dose of realism where necessary. It would be nice
to think they could use me as a ‘sounding board’, and hopefully, in return, receive
impartial advice.
