‘BEST IN CLASS’ EMPLOYABILITY Skills Tree becomes Communitree and launches class-time programmes For more information on Communitree and Brand New You contact Laura Hopton on 01522 574113 or laura.hopton@eblo.org.uk Employers often cite lack of work experience as the greatest barrier to hiring young people. Communitree matches high-calibre applicants to excellent work opportunities, so young people enhance their experience and career prospects, while employers get access to trained, motivated and work-ready candidates. By connecting young people and employers via a single platform, Communitree simplifies the engagement process. Working closely with participants to understand their skills, qualities and needs, Communitree helps them find stepping-stones along the road to success. With the help of local employers, it invests in building a strong future workforce. Introducing class-time programmes Communitree has developed six pick-and-mix class-time sessions, designed to provide students with an enhanced toolkit of skills relevant to education and employment. • In Skills Check Career Guidance, students calculate their skills, interests, qualities and strengths, then research job profiles to learn where they might fit in the labour market. • Marketing Me allows students to evaluate examples of personal statements in terms of their value as persuasive writing, then begin building their own for use in UCAS forms, job applications and cover letters. • Examining real-life examples of CVs to find their preferred candidate, students see them from an employer’s perspective. Our CV writing workshop with a twist is called In Their Shoes! • In Search and Succeed participants explore job search techniques, choose an advertisement that interests them, identify the main points within the text and use them to build their applications. • With college, university, work experience or employment interviews in mind, Operation Interview guides students on preparation techniques, common interview questions and how to decide on the best answers. • Let’s Get Digital explores online footprints and internet safety, with a particular focus on social media. The potential dangers of life online are covered alongside effective digital tools that can support student success. BRAND NEW PRODUCT: ‘BRAND NEW YOU’ Self-marketing inspiration for the contemporary jobs market The EBP’s Access Employability brand provides a range of interactive workshops, designed to improve students’ future prospects and supplement the traditional model of work experience. Among the latest workshop titles, Brand New You recognises that personal branding has never been more important to a young person’s journey into employment. During the programme, students explore self-marketing methods to improve their overall image and create good impressions ahead of future careers. The Brand New You component of the Goals for Life day at Sir Robert Pattinson Academy in North Hykeham this year was an excellent showcase. Year Nine student Troy Milstead observed that, “It was a very interesting, fun, hands-on experience, that made you think about the impression you are making, what an employer expects and how you need to prepare.” The workshop was very interactive, which kept the students engaged. It gave them the chance to think about the importance of first impressions and the need to get it right. Students found it to be a positive experience. Mrs Todd CEIAG & Work Experience Coordinator YOUNG, GREEN AND GIFTED TO THE COMMUNITY Inspired by graffiti and painted by Sleaford artist Richard Knight, The EBP’s Young Baron statue raised £5,500 for The Trussell Trust food bank charity. It was purchased by Daniel Charles Construction Ltd (Director Mr Dan Ingall, pictured right), who then donated the statue to William Farr School. 6 The EBP Young Baron is now a dramatic and impressive feature in our entrance lobby and his arrival was totally amazing and unexpected. We are really grateful for this wonderful gesture by a local company on behalf of a great cause – The Trussell Trust food banks. Mr Andrew Stones Head Teacher
SEASIDE STRETCH Destination Anywhere takes students ‘out’ of themselves – all the way to Butlins! With this activity programme, students directly experience the processes involved in delivering a quality leisure event. The EBP is thrilled to be working work with an iconic local venue that exemplifies professionalism in the Lincolnshire tourist industry. On the day, school teams will participate in interactive workshops to expand their understanding of the tasks required to organise and market an event, developing strategies and pitching ideas, taking factors such as travel, accommodation, costs, promotions and language requirements into consideration. Expert Butlins personnel will support students through their activities, emphasising transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, decision-making and financial planning. Finally, teams will make presentations about their own input, which will be assessed by industry representatives based on creativity, quality of teamwork and confidence of delivery, with prizes awarded to the winning team. 3 February 2016 All participants will receive a certificate recognising their achievement, and will complete evaluation forms at the start and end of the day, to monitor their progress and skills development. AN ASPIRATIONAL BUSINESS Young Traders activity day inspires deep thinking at The Deepings School Young Traders is designed to develop awareness of what it takes to start your own business. Student teams come up with their own business ideas, assign work roles, devise a budget and business plan, before presenting the results to each other, their instructors and entrepreneurs from the local business community. In early summer, 86 Year Eight students at The Deepings School took part in a Young Traders day led by Community Coordinator Rosella Gugliotta. Local business people Ian Anderson of online sports goods retailer Cricket Deal Direct, Andy from RapStrap and Alison from Cloud Nine presented, and supported the students’ process. Ian praised the “drive and style of delivery” that inspired a high level of interaction on the course. He described the students as highly focused with a great desire to succeed and competitive spirit and was deeply “impressed at the tenacity and creativity in such a young group”. Reinforcing the school’s enterprise ethos A longstanding user of The EBP’s services, The Deepings School is committed to developing enterprise and employability skills as a complement to successful academic learning. Enterprise activities are embedded across the curriculum and the Young Traders day was a good example. Head of Welland College Mark Presneill outlined the programme and gave an overview of the ‘enterprise’ concept during a special Year Eight assembly a few days beforehand. Careers and Events Manager Linda Taylor noted that students’ understanding of business was clearly increased, and that the final student presentations, “clearly demonstrated how their confidence and awareness had improved… Including representatives from local businesses was a great idea and helped further develop our community links”. Pleased with the efficiency and effectiveness of The EBP’s team, Linda confirmed that the school will deliver the programme again to all 260 Year Eight students later this academic year.
