A Word about Online Behaviour
Emails, text messages and Facebook posts are increasingly more frequent and
certainly consuming more time in our everyday lives. Access to increased
communication at our fingertips and in our faces all day every day can have its
benefits however, it also poses challenges and risks. Sometimes, very good
relationships, friendships and working partnerships, can be damaged by poorly
worded text messages, emails or Facebook posts. Sometimes it is all too easy to ‘fire
off’ an electronic communication that is charged with emotion. On many of these
occasions we often regret our haste because we could have better worded our
message, be better informed about the issue that is concerning us or have sought a
response to our concern from the relevant person.
All online users have a responsibility to be mindful of the content when
communicating electronically to ensure it does not breach social, legal, religious,
cultural or copyright standards. If our school becomes aware of inappropriate content
that is shared involving staff, students or volunteers, or the use of images, banners,
logos or our school crest without permission, we will take reasonable steps to ensure
the content is removed.
Our school is also committed to promoting a safe and supportive learning
environment and students involved in communicating inappropriate material on
websites, through email or text messaging may be disciplined in line with our school’s
Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students.
We will continue to work closely with parents and students to address issues as they
arise. We appreciate the support of all parents as we promote our school as a great
place to learn.
Swimming Carnival
This year the years 3-6 swimming carnival, Thursday 3 December, will only be for
students who nominate to swim. In 2016 we will move to a structure where all
students attend and participate in the school swimming carnival.
Class Formation 2016
At present, staff are in the process of forming 2016 classes. Core groups of students
from all classes will be kept together and taken up into the next year level. There will
be some adjustments made to the present classes taking into consideration teacher
recommendations. We have had a number of parent requests regarding class
placement and each request will be looked at individually. Final decisions regarding
class composition will rest with the Principal.
Prep 2016 Transition Day
The Prep Transition Day for 2016 Prep students will be held on Wednesday 25
November. Parents will receive confirmation of their child’s class and teacher for
2016 via email the week prior. On this day, your child will have the opportunity to
meet their teacher and classmates. They will spend approximately an hour in their
classroom, from 9:30am – 10:30am. During this time parents will be invited to the
Hall to share some light refreshments, chat with each other and some Prep parents
from this year. Outside School Hours care and the Uniform shop representatives will
also be available to provide information on these services.
Student Leaders 2016
The year 5 students will begin the process of applying for leadership positions in
2016. An expression of interest form has been sent home for interested students to
complete and return to their classroom teacher. Leadership positions for 2016 will
include, School Captains, House Captains, Music Captains and School Council. The
year 5 teachers will begin work with students next week on leaders and leadership
prior to students submitting their applications for leadership positions. Our student
leaders for 2016 will be inducted at our first whole school assembly in Term 1, 2016.
Gumdale State School is one of 34 Metropolitan schools working in conjunction with
Griffith University researching the implementation of age appropriate pedagogies in
schools. This project is looking into how teachers can best cater for the needs of
young learners as they transition from Pre-Prep and Kindergarten into the first year of
school. We are very excited by the benefits of being involved in this project and are
looking into ways to make our programs even more learner- focused and responsive
to our Prep students.

Home readers
Next week will be the last week home readers will be sent home for homework. These
books will need to be returned to school when your classroom teacher requests them,
so they can be re-shelved and audited. Students in Prep, Years One and Two are
encouraged to use their Bug Club log in details to read online.
Helping your child with reading at home
Students are encouraged to practise reading daily in order to improve in their fluency
and comprehension. Here are some comprehension strategies you can practise with
your child at home to support them at school.
Finding Main Idea
The main idea is a statement that tells what the text is mostly about. You can start
practising this skill using simple texts with basic ideas and few words. Gradually build
up to larger, more complex texts as children develop proficiency. Practise with fiction
and non-fiction texts.
Ask:
What are the most common words in the text?
What is the text mostly about? What is the main idea?
What could a suitable title for this text be?
Recalling Facts and Details
Non-fiction texts contain facts and details that support the main idea. They usually
inform who, what, where, when, why and how. Questions about facts and details ask
about something that was written in the passage. Ask your child to answer questions
about facts or details by getting them to look back in the text to locate the answers.
Recognising Cause and Effect
This strategy helps to make connections with why events happen, or what could
happen. As your child reads, ask them:
What happened? (this answer is the effect)
Why? (this answer is the cause)
Encourage your child to put their answers in sentences, linking causes and effects
with so, as a result, because, since, therefore, etc.
Comparing and Contrasting
Comparing is thinking about how two things are alike; contrasting is thinking about
how two things are different. Using this comprehension strategy helps to connect
ideas – children can learn about something new by using compare and contrast with
something they know more about. As your child reads, ask:
How are these two things the same?
How are these two things different?
Encourage your child to use words such as alike, both, difference, on the other hand
and unlike.
Library News
Year 5 camp 2015
For year 5 camp 2015, we went to Currumundi Recreation Centre, which is located on
the beach at the Sunshine Coast. We enjoyed extremely fun activities such as: body
boarding, team skills, the giant swing and the pool. On the giant swing you got pulled
up by your teammates to the height you wanted to go to and then you released the
leaver to start swinging. When you went body boarding you got a quick beginners
lesson and then you got to go into the surf, but be aware of the Currumundi shuffle
(chafing). We also had night activities such as Minute to Win It and Mini Olympics.
The food was amazing too, with common favourites such as the fried rice and roast
pork. All in all we had a great camp where we saw true leadership potential in our
peers. We would like to thank Mr Adams, Miss Agerholm, Mr Harris, Mrs McCredie,
Miss Tapinos and Mrs Walters for giving up their time and precious sleep to make sure
we had an awesome time on camp.
By Conor, Mia and Sam 5E
MY CAMP EXPERIENCE
Last week our class and the other year fives went on a leader-ship camp to
Currimundi. There were many activities and we had lots of fun. My favourite part was
a tie between the giant swing and body boarding. On the giant swing you were
strapped into a harness and lifted to the top of two poles and then dropped. As you
fall you also start to swing. There was delicious food, my two favourite meals were
the fried rice and ice-cream nachos. This camp was also fun because we learned how
to help out more at home, like setting up and cleaning up the dinner table and
sweeping the floor and doing washing. This was a great experience and I can’t wait to
do it again in year six. By Olivia 4/5T
CAMP CURRIMUNDI – AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE
Grade fives experienced three days of amazing fun. One of the most popular activities
was the beach play. We could play in the sand, splash n the water and build
tremendous sand castles. Other exciting events included the giant swing, boogie
boarding and night activities. I’m sure all of us will remember this camp for many
years to come. By Holly 5H
YEAR FIVE CAMP 2015
Year 5 Camp
This term year five went to a school camp at Currimundi on the Sunshine Coast. We
thought the activities were completely amazing. We did body boarding, giant swing,
mini Olympics, circus skills and Minute to Win it. We had a great time with our friends
and went home on the bus excitedly.

YMCA Gumdale OSHC
Messages from the Team:
YMCA Gumdale OSHC has a strict arrivals and departures
policy which ensures the safety and wellbeing of all YMCA
children. This policy relies heavily on regular
communication between families and our service. We
strongly encourage all parents to notify us as soon as
possible if your child/ren are not attending before or after
school care on the days booked. This notification can be
made via phone, SMS or email at any time throughout the
day. The new “My Family Lounge” App can now also be
Over the past few weeks our arts and crafts activities have
been influenced by some very special events. Our children
had a great time making some bright red scarves and
opportunity to remind ourselves about safety!
GUMDALE STATE SCHOOL P &C ASSOCIATION
Joining the P&C Association at Gumdale School is a great way to keep informed, to
contribute to the quality education of your children, and to make new friends. You can
learn new skills and gain a clear understanding of how the school operates. Your
contribution can be as large or small as you can manage, but your ongoing support of
the P&C Association is invaluable. This is a great opportunity to share in the school’s
decision-making process and shape the future.
Functions of the P&C Association

To foster community interest in educational matters.
To encourage closer co-operation between the parents of students attending the
school, other members of the community, staff and students of the school.
To provide advice and recommendations to the Principal of the school on issues
and concerns in respect of students and the general operation and management
of the school.
To provide or assist in the provision of financial or other resources or services
for the benefit of students of the school.
To perform any other functions, not inconsistent with the Act, as the Minister
may decide.
The above information is quoted from the P&C Association information sheet. Above
all, we are volunteers who give our time willingly and freely to help the school.
Often we are asked about the following issues:
School Speed Limits
The P&C members and Executive have no influence over the speed that people drive
through school zone during mornings and afternoons. If parents have a concern,
please raise this issue with the police. We do ask though, that all of the community be
aware of the speed limits at certain times during the day.
Parking
We are also often asked if we can control parking in the various Stop Drop and Go
and loading zones. This is a matter for Brisbane City Council. We do ask though, that
you be considerate of the wider community and local businesses by parking
appropriately. Brisbane City Council does patrol these areas.
Social Media
We cannot control social media, but we ask you all to be polite and mindful of your
posts.
be at the next Frosty Friday and the Christmas Stall. The Volunteer of the month for
November/December will then be drawn at the next P&C Meeting on 8 December.
School Disco
Thank you to all those who supported the P&C and attended the
final school disco for the year, held on Friday 6 November. We
raised over $2,000 for the school and a great time was had by all! Thank you also to the
staff of the PCYC who kindly volunteered supervision for the night. We couldn’t have
proceeded without you.
Christmas Stall
On Thursday 3 and Friday 4 December we will once again be
providing an opportunity for students to purchase gifts for all family
members at the Christmas Stall in the Hollis Hall foyer. Gifts suitable for
all family members will be priced from $1.00 - $10.00.
Please ensure you send money along in a snap-lock bag with your
child’s name and class written on the front. Please also put a spare plastic
shopping bag inside the snap-lock bag so your child can bring home any goodies
purchased. Classes will be told their allocated stall time closer to the date.
