Principal’s Report
Finishing Strong – The Gumdale Way
With one week to go until we break for the Easter Vacation I am pleased to report
that although it has been a hectic start to 2016, there are high levels of achievement
across the school.
As previously reported there is strong academic progress evident in all classes. Thank
you to parents who are encouraging their children to finish the term strongly in the
three areas of attendance, behaviour and academic achievement. I would ask that
parents remind their children to renew their efforts in term 2 so they continue their
strong progress. Enjoy the vacation, I look forward to our “students giving their
best – always.”
Leaving Gumdale State School at the end of term?
Any families who know they are leaving our school at the end of this term are asked
to notify the office as soon as possible. In addition to assisting you to transfer your
child to their next school, your early advice helps us to confirm class groups and
staffing. Your assistance is appreciated.
2016 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
Today our school took part in in the 2016 National Day of Action against Bullying and
Violence. At our school we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for
everyone.
Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their
child talks to them about bullying.
You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if
it happens. Preventing bullying involves everyone.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your
child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask
questions to get more details if you need to: who, what, where, when. Although you
may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to
avoid more distress to your child.
2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and
this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really

hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told
me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part
of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to
want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better
option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some
strategies. The website has tips and ideas for
different bullying situations. One idea is to
practise strategies at home to help your child
feel more confident.
5. Contact the school. Your child may be
reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea
and reassure them that the school would want
to know and is able to help. Make an
appointment to meet with your child’s teacher
and, if you need to, ask to talk with the
principal. Contact the school immediately if you
have a concern about your child’s safety.
6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the
conversation going. It can take time to resolve
issues, so check in regularly with your child
about their experiences and their feelings. Your
ongoing support is important.
For details of our school’s Responsible Behaviour
Plan for Students, please visit our school website.
New P&C Executive
Congratulations to our new P&C Executive who were recently elected. I look forward
to working with the new president, Gretchen Mander-Jones and her team over the
next twelve months. I would like to thank our outgoing president, Piers Gordon for
the work that he has done over the last two years. His contribution has been very
much appreciated.
Parent-Teacher Interviews
Thank-you to the parents who attended the parent-teacher interview session that we
held in Hollis Hall on Wednesday evening. If you were unable to attend this session
and would like the opportunity to have an interview, please contact your child`s class
teacher to arrange a convenient time to meet.
End of Term One
As we come to the end of a short but very busy term we would like to take the
opportunity to thank all members of our school community for a positive start to this
year. We wish everyone a safe and restful Easter break and look forward to working
with everyone again in term 2 as we continue to provide the best education for our
students.
Report Cards
Upgrades to the functionality of the school’s computer management systems allows
student report cards to be emailed to parents. Emailing of report cards improves the
timeliness of report delivery, and the surety of parents receiving the reports. In
addition to a printed report card, the school will also be emailing reports to parents of
students in Prep to Year 6 throughout 2016.
Please ensure that any changes to email addresses are updated. Any email changes
can be sent to reportingenquires@gumdaless.eq.edu.au. We look forward to the
smooth introduction to the electronic transfer of student reports to parents/carers at
the end of the semester.
School Administration
Collection of Children before 3pm
The process for collecting children from school before 3pm will be as follows
• Parent/Carer reports to the office to complete the ‘Student Sign Out Folder’
• Admin Staff verify emergency contacts for the student
• Admin Staff produce an early release slip for the parent/carer to take to the
classroom teacher
• Parent proceeds to the classroom to collect the child, handing the early release
slip to the classroom teacher.
Children will no longer be called to the office to wait for parents/carers to collect
them. This will ensure the children and escorts have minimum classroom disruption.
Learning time is the priority for this initiative.
If a child is sick the normal process will remain. Child presents to the health room,
assessed and if required a parent/carer will be called to collect the child from the sick
room. The classroom teacher will be contacted about the departure. When the
Parent/Carer arrives they will then sign the ‘Student Sign Out Folder’ and take the
child home to recover.
ICT Support
Cyber Safety – Supporting your child’s safe use of online games and in-app
purchases.
If your child plays online games and uses apps it is important to understand how the
costs can add up. Apps and online games provide great social interaction and
entertainment but additional costs can be incurred even after you have already paid
for the game.
For example, while playing the online game or using the app, your child may be given
the option to pay again for extra content such as bonus game levels or points.
To help control the costs of online games and apps:
·Turn off ‘in-app’ purchases in the settings of your phone and other devices so your
child has to ask to buy additional levels/characters/lands.
·Keep passwords to yourself so others can’t purchase apps and add-ons without you
knowing.
·Talk to your child about costs. Explain that games, apps and the extra features in
them all cost real money. Watch your child play a game or app and explain which
parts cost extra.
·Set a reasonable weekly or monthly
spend for apps or games and help your
child track their spending so they can
make good choices. For older kids talk
about data costs as well.

·Check what your child is doing. Are the games and apps appropriate? Online games
have ratings―some apps or games have inappropriate ads with links to adult
websites, contain offensive material or replicate gambling games.
If your child has accessed content that has disturbed them or concerns you seek
professional support. You or your child can also visit the Cybersmart Online Helpline
(www.cybersmart.gov.au/report.aspx) or call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800.
Music News
Instrumental Music
What a great start we have had to the year in the Band Room. Our beginners are
going great guns and the year 5 and 6 bands are working very hard on pieces to play
at the school ANZAC Day ceremony on Friday 22 April as well as for FANFARE state
bands competition in June. Attendance has been exceptional!
Important to note: In term 2, year 4 and 5 bands will combine and rehearse BOTH
Monday and Tuesday mornings! It would be great if all band students could make
both rehearsal days up until FANFARE when we will then drop back to one rehearsal
as we will also begin the Junior Concert Band (year 4 instrumental players).
In Term 2, Senior Concert Band will be on Mondays and Tuesdays, ready to play at
7:45 am, in the Music Room.
Next term, all beginner instrumental students are able to attend a five day Music
School, at the Beginner Music Camp at Sleeman Sports Centre Arena. After this
camp, Junior Concert Band will begin rehearsals.
Watch Your Practice: All instrumental students have a practice record glued into the
front of their Tradition of Excellence Books. Please ensure your child is filling this our
correctly and that a parent signs/initials it every week.
A 2016 Performance Calendar is being distributed to all
instrumental students next week.
My contact is vthom38@eq.edu.au, please feel free to email
with any queries.
We love making music!
STEM Club
@ Gumdale State School Jaey Limb & Leea Mitchell
This fortnight our Year 3 and 5 STEMologists have been challenged by a host of
mathematical and engineering challenges including geometric puzzles, number
brainteasers, hands-on problem-solving and engineering. The students worked
enthusiastically in teams to stretch their minds, demonstrating persistence and team
skills to find some innovative solutions to difficult problems. Well done!
Four Year 4 students attended the Brainwaves Codebreaker Days of Excellence at
Aspley State School last week. They interacted with students from around Brisbane
from Years 4 - 6. Students worked in mixed school groups and learnt all about the
maths and science behind making and solving codes. Using their newly-acquired
knowledge and skills, students were then given a range of codes and mysteries to
solve. This was an excellent experience for our students to not only develop their
STEM thinking, but work flexibly in groups. The students thoroughly enjoyed the
program.
Some of our Year 6 students embarked in 4 days of STEM discovery through the
STEM Horizons Project. The students were involved in Rediscovering Dinosaurs at
Newmarket State School and Micro & Macro at the Manly Boat Harbour, where they
climbed aboard a power boat and observed the wonderful world of marine biology,
including the scientific importance of fish and their luminescent properties.
More exciting STEM challenges are coming up in Term 2 for Year 6 students:
• Robots Shaping Our Future Lives at Griffith University EcoCentre, Nathan
Campus
• Who Stole the Lollypops? At the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Woolloongabba

These cutting-edge programs are partnered by schools, the Department of Education
and Training, the University of Queensland and Griffith University, as well as experts
from the private and public sector.
Website of the Week:
Challenge of the Week: Tiling The Wall
A rectangular area of kitchen wall will need 3 rows of 12 tiles to cover it. You have as
many white tiles and as many coloured flower tiles as you need, but although the
area must include both types of tiles, the coloured tiles must never be next to each
other, not even diagonally. If each row must have at least one coloured tile, what is
the maximum number that can be used?
Last newsletter’s solution: 27 hexagons
YMCA Gumdale OSHC
Messages from the Team:
This week we have begun to encourage our YMCA Gumdale
OSHC families to participate in some sustainable practices
with us. We have asked our families to please bring in any
items which can be reused or recycled for our art and craft
projects. This includes cereal boxes, cardboard, scrap paper
and egg cartons. Our goal is to become more aware of the
multiple uses of many products we waste in our week.
What we’ve been doing:
Over the last few weeks a group of our senior girls have
started a YMCA Gumdale OSHC Dance Club. Each afternoon
they share a range of their dancing skills and talents with
the younger children. It has been fantastic to see our older
children showcase some of their leadership skills during this
activity.
We will announce all the major winners next Term.
Thank you to Kylie Brayshaw, Rachael Franklin and Michelle
Moffatt for all the time and effort you all put into organising and
2015 Fundraising Committee
Secretary: Kylie Brayshaw, Treasurer: Rachael Frankin and Committee members
Jodie Chervikov, Jacinta Colley, Bridget Kinch, Shaunesy Pegg, Michelle
Moffatt, Anita Ryan, and Lorie Zahradnik.
The 2015 Fundraising Committee has officially stepped down. I would just like to
acknowledge and say THANK YOU to all the members for their time and effort you
each put in to the fundraising activities and events that were run in 2015. Your
professionalism, creativity, organisational, communication skills and sense of humour
have all played a part in raising an amazing $55k for the Gumdale State School P&C.
To Rachael Franklin and Bridget Kinch, your long service and commitment to the
Fundraising Committee should also be recognised. Three years of voluntary service is
amazing and you both continue to find time in your busy lives to give something to
each and every single event the Fundraising Committee runs. Thank you.
2016 Fundraising Committee
The 2016 Fundraising Committee is proud to have the continued services of renominated
members Kylie Brayshaw, Jodie Cherviakov, Jacinta Colley, Rachael
Franklin, Bridget Kinch, Shaunesy Pegg, Michelle Moffatt and Lorie Zahradnik.
We would also like to welcome new members Angela Brown, Harriet Campbell,
Kate Crowe, Cath Cook, Fiona Hanley, Martiza Kriel and Angela Lewis.

The 2016 Fundraising Committee will be holding its first meeting after the school
holidays and at this time nominations to fill the Executive and Committee roles will be
called for and hopefully all positions filled. We look forward to sharing with the school
community when this has been determined.
Thank you to all of these wonderful volunteers for their willingness to assist with
raising money for the P&C to support all the students at the school.
Please remember we are always welcoming of new people wanting to assist, in large
or small capacities. If you think this might be something you would like to be a part
of, please contact us at fundraising@gumdalesspc.org.au. Fundraising is a fantastic
way to learn about our great school whilst helping our children at the same time.
