Principal’s Report
Every day counts
As we have now passed the half way mark of Term 1, parents and carers are
reminded of the importance of sending children to school every day. Being at school
every day counts, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of
missed lessons in a year.
Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every
day of the school year.
More information on the importance of regular school attendance is available at:
http://education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/index.html
National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) – 2016
The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a strategy
designed to assess our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in Reading, Writing, Language
Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy. As a courtesy for
your forward planning I’m providing dates when students from all state and non-state
schools across Australia will take part in these national literacy and numeracy tests:
• Tuesday 10 May – Language conventions and Writing
• Wednesday 11 May – Reading
• Thursday 12 May – Numeracy
Friday 13 May is catch up tests for absent students where possible.
Parking At The IGA – Eastside Village
Please be reminded that the Eastside Village Shopping centre is not a school car park.
Business owners have met with me this week raising concerns that they are losing
customers because they are unable to find a car park during school pick up and drop
off times. Please be considerate of this centre. They are great supporters of our
school.

Bullying. No Way!
The sixth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is being held on Friday,
18 March 2016.
This annual day is Australia's key anti-bullying event for schools, and encourages all
students to 'take a stand together' against bullying and violence in schools, the
classroom and beyond. Our school will acknowledge this day as part of our wider
strategies within our school. Genevieve Agerholm has written a great article on
Collection of Children before 3pm
The process for collecting children from school before 3pm will be as follows
• Parent/Carer reports to the office to complete the ‘Student Sign Out Folder’
• Admin Staff verify emergency contacts for the student
• Admin Staff produce an early release slip for the parent/carer to take to the
classroom teacher
• Parent proceeds to the classroom to collect the child, handing the early release
slip to the classroom teacher.
Children will no longer be called to the office to wait for parents/carers to collect
them. This will ensure the children and escorts have minimum classroom disruption.
Learning time is the priority for this initiative.

If a child is sick the normal process will remain. Child presents to the health room,
assessed and if required a parent/carer will be called to collect the child from the sick
room. The classroom teacher will be contacted about the departure. When the
Parent/Carer arrives they will then sign the ‘Student Sign Out Folder’ and take the
child home to recover.
Advice to help manage children’s time online.

A child’s life is full of opportunities for them to spend time out of school with
community groups, sporting clubs and their friends. Spending time online is also a
regular activity for many children who enjoy communicating with friends, sharing
information and playing games.
Whilst there are no guidelines for the ‘right’ amount of time someone should spend
online or gaming, if your child is being negatively impacted by excessive use it may
be time to discuss how they can take action to maintain a healthy balance.
· Look for indicators that your child may be spending too much time online, such as a
declined interest in other activities, talking constantly about an online game or
activity, a decline in grades, or irritability.
· Discuss how other aspects of their life are being affected. Excessive use can impact
on someone’s health and wellbeing, family, relationships, work or education.
· Consider establishing rules about when your child can play games or use the
internet and how long they can play for. You might make a mutual agreement to set a
balance of online and offline activities. You may need to establish consequences for
rule breaches. Depending on the age of the child you may also set passwords that
they do not know.
· Locate the computer in a shared or visible place in the home so you know how much
time your child is being spent online and what they are doing online.
· Seek support if you have concerns. Visit
the Cybersmart Online Helpline to access
free, confidential counselling for children
and young people.
If you or someone you know wants to talk
about online issues, visit the Cybersmart
BULLYING
Our school says 'Bullying. No Way!' on the
National Day of Action.
On Friday 18 March, our school will be taking
a stand together on the National Day of
Action against Bullying and Violence.
The National Day is an annual event for
Australian schools where school communities
across the nation stand as one against
bullying and violence.
Gumdale State School is dedicated to creating safe and supportive school
environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence.
On Friday 18, all classes will discuss bullying and what they can do if they are being,
or see someone else being bullied. Together, we can send clear messages to young
people that bullying and violence, in or outside the classroom, are not okay at any
time.
Orange ribbons will be on sale around the school for $1 each from Monday 14 March.
All proceeds will go to the Gumdale State School Student Council.
TEASING VS BULLYING
With the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence coming up, it’s a good
time to think about what bullying is and isn’t. Below is an article written by Michael
Grose. Michael has a background in education, with a Master of Educational Studies
focusing on what makes healthy families. He has written 9 parenting books and writes
for newspapers and magazines. His article ‘Teasing vs Bullying: Knowing the
difference is vital’ looks at the differences between teasing and bullying and why it is
important to distinguish between the two.
Teasing vs bullying: knowing the difference is vital
By Michael Grose
“What is bullying? Do we mix it up with teasing and other forms of mean behaviour?”
It’s an important topic that needs clarification.
Bullying is a term that’s wrapped in emotion. For many people it’s associated with bad
childhood memories. It’s been estimated that around 40 per cent of people have
experienced bullying in the past. It’s something that we don’t want to happen to our
kids.
But I fear it’s being overused at the moment and can be confused with teasing.
Teasing refers to annoying, hurtful behaviour that is used to get a reaction from
someone else. Teasing can be persistent in nature, but not always. It’s generally an
attempt to get under a person’s skin. It can involve name-calling; it can be personal
and hurtful in nature. It can also infringe on another person’s rights. But generally
teasing doesn’t have the key ingredients that make up bullying.

Bullying is the selective, uninvited, repetitive oppression of one person or group by
another. It involves three elements – intent to hurt or harm; power imbalance; and
repetition over time. It takes many forms and guises including physical aggression;
verbal abuse; emotional aggression (or blackmail); intimidation; harassment and
exclusion.
The new cyber-dimension to bullying has moved the goalpost for many kids. In the
past children and young people could escape bullying behaviours by being at home.
Cyber-bullying means that children can’t escape bullies like they once could.
Why the distinction?
I hear the term bullying misused a great deal in the media and when talking with
parents. We run the risk of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” Syndrome where we become so
desensitised to the term that we (or teachers) ignore it when children really are the
victims of bullying. We also run the risk of failing to skill our kids up to manage
rudeness and teasing if we categorise every awful behaviour that kids experience as
bullying.
Our ability to be discerning about bullying is as important as the action we take when
we are sure that our child is on the receiving end of bullying behaviour. These actions
include: dealing with feelings; providing emotional coping skills, getting others
involved; building up a child’s support networks; and building self-confidence that can
take a battering.
Bullying needs to be taken seriously. But we also need to be discerning about bullying
behaviours.
Jaey Limb & Leea Mitchell
This term marks the introduction of our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
(STEM) Club at Gumdale. The 10-week program welcomed selected students from
Years 3 and 5, who have enthusiastically tackled challenges including measuring and
predicting their own body proportions, designing 3D structures using innovative
software and investigating some slimy science concepts. Activities are very hands-on,
encourage students to problem-solve independently and work flexibly in teams, and
promote critical thinking. Participating students not only attend weekly sessions, but
can also access their projects during break times and at home if they choose to.
Years 4 and 6 students will be invited to attend from halfway through Term 2. At this
stage, spaces are reserved for students who demonstrate a high ability in
mathematics and science. As the program grows, more students will be able to
participate.

General Information
Unfortunately one of our students has lost their guitar. It was last seen about 4
weeks ago in the bag rack downstairs G block. The guitar is blue and it is kept in a
soft, red and black case. The family would really appreciate any assistance to locate it
as the guitar is brand new and was a Christmas gift. If you have any information
could you please contact the school office. Thank you.

wrap or snap lock bag. Don’t forget to list all the ingredients used. You can then drop
off your baked goods to the Hollis Hall kitchen on Friday 18 March from 2:30pm –
3:15pm or deliver to the cake stall on the day.
If you’re unable to bake anything, but would like to donate cash instead to support
the stall you can drop a cash donation into the P&C donation box at School Admin in a
named envelope or we can provide you with bank account details to do a transfer.

If you are able to give us a hand by helping cook the sausages on the BBQ or sell
drinks or cakes please email fundraising@gumdalesspc.org.au. Volunteers will be
required from 7:00am – 3:00pm on the day. Council Election Day is Saturday 19
March.
Easter Raffle
Don’t forget to return the sold ticket books and money with your child’s name and
class to school by Friday 11 March. If you do not wish to purchase or sell any tickets,
please return the tickets in a named envelope to school. If you wish to sell additional
books of tickets, you can collect these from the school office. There will be a prize for
the student who sells the most tickets and also a prize for the class that collectively
sells the most tickets.
If you are able to help, please send donations of Easter eggs and to the school office.
These generous donations will then be made up into Easter basket prizes. Donations
of goods need to be delivered to the school office by Friday 11 March.
Prizes will be randomly drawn on Thursday 17 March. Prizes will be delivered to the
class room of the student who sold the winning ticket(s) on Friday 18 March.
