tensions. Its name comes from the Japanese words “shi” or ginger and “atsu” or pressure. Also<br />

known as acupressure, Shiatsu is a point-pressure <strong>massage</strong> designed to help regulate the flow of<br />

energy within the body. Its produce a deep relaxation, increases energy levels and brings balance<br />

to the body.<br />

TECHNIQUE<br />

During a shiatsu <strong>massage</strong>, thumb, fingers, palms or feet apply pressure to specific points on the<br />

body‟s energy pathways, known as meridiens. Other techniques such as rocking, stretches,<br />

vibration and joint rotations are used as well. Loose clothing is worn and it is usually performed<br />

on a mat on the floor.. Shiatsu treatment is holistic, addressing the whole body rather than<br />

focusing on the one area where symptoms are most obvious. This type of <strong>massage</strong> begins with<br />

gentle stretching and manipulation of the skin to allow the stimulation of energy and relax the<br />

muscles. Depending on the need of the person receiving the <strong>massage</strong>, it can be very gentle and<br />

calming or used with high pressure, but should never hurt or feel painful.<br />
