Message
from the Chair,
Board of Trustees
On behalf of the Board of Trustees,
I would like to welcome you to this
evening’s presentation of our season
opener, The Marriage of Figaro. In Figaro,
Mozart has melded glorious music with
believable characters to create what many,
including myself, consider to be the
most perfect opera of all time. We have
a wonderful cast, including many great
performers from Manitoba, and, of course,
the Manitoba Opera Chorus on stage and
the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in
the pit. I am sure this will be a night
to remember.
I am pleased to tell you that your opera
company finished its 2014/15 season
(May 31) with a small surplus. Nevertheless,
this is an incredibly expensive art form
that combines singing, theatre, and a full
orchestra to create the all-encompassing
experience that is opera. You may be
surprised to know that the actual
production cost for The Marriage of
Figaro is $173 per seat.
Many of you, I know, donate to Manitoba
Opera, and I thank you for your support
above and beyond the cost of your ticket
or subscription. Your generosity helps to
make opera accessible to a wide range
of Manitobans. If you have not yet made
a donation, please consider making a
donation to cover all, or part of the
difference of the real cost of and what
you paid for your ticket. We appreciate
each and every gift, and you will receive
a tax receipt for your donation.
Manitoba Opera provides Manitobans with
high-quality opera that is linked to our
contemporary lives. I am looking forward
this season to our spring opera, Of Mice
and Men, by American composer Carlisle
Floyd. The opera, and surrounding audience
engagement events, will highlight issues
concerning persons labelled with intellectual
disabilities and those marginalised by events
beyond their control. These are issues as
relevant today as they were in the 1930s.
See you there!
Message from the
General Director
& CEO
If you don’t know the name Pierre
Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, don’t
worry, you know the operas adapted
from his plays, The Barber of Seville by
Rossini and Mozart’s The Marriage of
Figaro. The plays are sometimes revived,
with good reason, but, like many literary
works, their opera incarnations have
outpaced them.
Beaumarchais was quite a character, and
his Marriage, with its alternate title,
A Mad Day, caused a great stir at its
premiere in 1778. Seen as an attack on the
privileged aristocracy, it shocked even Louis
XVI and has often been cited as one of the
inspirations, by the literate rising middle
class, for the French Revolution. The play
survived the censors, and Beaumarchais
even became a spy for France, but Figaro
had done its seed work for political action.
Mozart and his great librettist, Lorenzo
Da Ponte toned down the politics when
they adapted the piece in 1786 (only three
ominous years before the Revolution),
concentrating on the intensely personal,
rather than the overtly political.
They did keep a key idea in the plot, the
“droit du seigneur,” a primary indictment
against the idea of masters controlling
servants. This medieval “right of the lord,”
conferred on the lord the custom of
sleeping with the bride of any of his vassals.
Most research into the custom shows it was
probably, at worst, part of what was known
as a record of redemption paid by the vassal
to the lord to avoid his supposed rights.
By the 18th century, this old idea was
discredited, as it seems to be in Figaro, but
it heats up the plot and keeps it boiling.
The Marriage of Figaro was the first of
three collaborations between Mozart and
Da Ponte, (who led as colourful a life as
Beaumarchais, hence the attraction to his
work). Figaro is their sunniest opera with
the later two, Don Giovanni and Così fan
tutte, darker in tone. Written for Vienna,
it was a success, but not really the hit which
Mozart was always hoping for, but fitfully
getting. However, it was a smash in Prague.
“Everywhere Figaro” is how Mozart
described it, noting that the opera’s
tunes were hummed by everyone, from
chambermaids to coachmen to the nobility
– which was the main audience for opera.
Figaro was one of the first operas to reach
out to a wider audience, with the middle
class becoming the main opera-going public
by the early 19th century.
Many recent productions have updated
Le nozze di Figaro, most notably one set
in Trump Tower, but the parallels are
awkward, since the world of Figaro isn’t
simply one of paid servants and rich bosses,
but a tight inter-related community
revolving around a long-gone aristocracy.
Whereas Beaumarchais’ play seeks to
subvert the aristocracy, Mozart’s opera
embraces it and sees it as fodder to skew
the human foibles of the privileged class
with his sublime and comic music –
truly making it an opera of the people.
Participate in a study on
experiencing a live event
Manitoba Opera patrons are being asked
to participate in a U of M research project
that is examining how people experience
live events. PhD candidate Raymond Lavoie,
in conjunction with Dr. Kelley Main of the
Asper School of Business, is focusing his
dissertation on how people perceive live
events and what factors can help them
optimize their satisfaction and happiness
from such experiences.
A more detailed explanation on the
research project is given in the debriefing
at the end of the survey.
Thanking you in advance for your
participation is this research project.
The research includes gathering data from
surveys completed by people after they
have attended a live event. The survey takes
about five minutes to complete, and anyone
completing the survey will be entered to
win a $200 Best Buy gift card.
Perspectives
Love Regained
by Rory Runnells
The Marriage of Figaro is about a lot
of things, but love, and its expression
as sexual desire in many of its
permutations and combinations,
is at its heart.
On the estate of the embattled Count and
Countess Almaviva, almost all the characters
are in love or lamenting lost love – as does
the Countess for the Count; are tortured
by burgeoning sexual desire – as are the
younger ones, the page Cherubino, and
the gardener’s daughter Barbarina; or
rediscovering an old passion turned to
love – as are the oldest ones, Dr. Bartolo
and Marcellina.
The Count’s sexual desires upset his own
world though he doesn’t see it. Figaro,
at the centre of the action, as he was in
The Barber of Seville, is the lightning rod
and the clever manipulator of the plot.
However, he is now in love with his
bride-to-be, Susanna, and the dark side
of love: jealousy, will rear its ugly head
in him and others.
Figaro and Susanna are confident in their
love, but the nasty custom – the infamous
“droit du seigneur” – challenges it severely
before peace can return. This supposedly
medieval custom allowed the lord of the
estate to sleep with the bride of a vassal on
the wedding night. There is no convincing
evidence of this custom ever existing.
At most, there was a money payment to the
lord, who originally did have the right to
select a vassal’s bride. In any case, the Count
doesn’t need that custom, which in the
opera he claims has been banished, to try
to get it on with any female, especially
Susanna, who outwits him at every turn.
Crazy passion whirls around, but it is the
reconciliation of the Countess and Count
which ends the mad day of desire gone
wild. In one of the most moving scenes
in opera, the Countess grants the Count
the pardon for which he begs for his
thoughtlessly cruel out-of-line behaviour
towards her (not to mention everyone else).
The Countess is the most sympathetic
character in this work. It’s easy to feel her
bewilderment at seemingly losing the
Count’s ardent love which was quite evident
in The Barber of Seville, while remaining,
possibly against her better judgment,
passionate about him. If you have known
love, you can understand that.
The multiple couplings that end Figaro
signify that love can be regained and
discovered, in both young and old. Love
conquers all? For the moment, anyway,
and Mozart’s exquisite, joyous music in the
finale makes one hope that it can forever.
Association of Playwrights, Drama Editor for
Prairie Fire magazine, and writes book reviews
The Composer
Wolfgang
Amadeus
Mozart
(1756 - 1791)
Considered to be the most comprehensively
gifted musician who has ever lived, Mozart,
despite his relatively short life (36 years),
made a tremendous impact on music. He
displayed remarkable versatility and an
ability to use music to connect the listener
with his soul and spirit.
He wrote music – complete and perfect,
down to the last accent and inflection – as
fast as he could think, and this astonishing
rate of production continues to stupefy
scholars today. He composed over 600
works including 21 stage and opera works,
15 Masses, over 50 symphonies, 25 piano
concertos, 12 violin concertos, 27 concert
arias, 17 piano sonatas, and 26 string quartets.
He was a child prodigy who began to play
the harpsichord at the age of three and to
compose at the age of five. He also played
both the violin and the viola to soloist
standard. While there have been other
prodigies, none have approached Mozart’s
ability to combine dazzling musical
imagination with a total mastery of style
and form and matchless beauty of
expression.
However talented he was, life was not easy
for Mozart. He was a poor businessman and
finances were always tight. He descended
to a life of genteel poverty, with his music
only sporadically popular, and eventually
fell back on his teaching jobs and on the
charity of friends to make ends meet.
Mozart died suddenly and unexpectedly
after suffering an illness – thought to be
rheumatic fever.
The Librettist
Lorenzo
Da Ponte
(1749 - 1838)
Lorenzo Da Ponte, whose original name
was Emmanuele Conegliano, was an Italian
poet and librettist best known for his
collaboration with Mozart.
Jewish by birth, Da Ponte was baptized in
1763 and later became a priest; freethinking
(expressing doubts about religious doctrine)
and his pursuit of an adulterous relationship,
however, eventually led, in 1779, to his
expulsion from the Venetian state.
Taking up residence in Vienna, he became
official poet to the court of Emperor Joseph
II and in that capacity wrote successful
librettos for numerous musicians. It was
there in 1783 that Da Ponte made the
acquaintance of Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart and entered upon the finest period
of his literary career. Three masterpieces
appeared in rapid succession – Le nozze di
Figaro (1786), Don Giovanni (1787), and
Così fan tutte (1790). During the same period
he achieved his greatest popular success
with the libretto to Martín y Soler’s Una
cosa rara (1787). Da Ponte’s enduring merit
derived from his ability to infuse borrowed
themes with new life and to interweave
tragic and comic elements. His version
of the Don Juan legend, in particular,
exercised a lasting literary influence.
Left without support after Joseph II’s death
in 1790, Da Ponte resumed his wanderings.
After a period in London (1792-1805), he
emigrated to the United States to escape
his creditors, settling finally in New York,
where he devoted himself to teaching
Italian language and literature at Columbia
College and promoting Italian cultural
activities. His four-volume Memorie
(1823-27; Memoirs of Lorenzo Da Ponte),
although mainly concerned with portraying
the author as a victim of fate and enemies,
is valuable for its portrait of early
19th-century America.
Synopsis
The Marriage of Figaro
first performance: Burgtheater, Vienna, May 1, 1786
place: The palace of Count Almaviva, near Seville, Spain
t i m e: Mid-18th Century x language: Italian
Act I
A room in Count Almaviva’s castle. It is
Figaro and Susanna’s wedding day for which
they are preparing and measuring the room
the Count has given them to use as their
bedroom. Susanna tells Figaro that it is too
near the Count’s and that the Count has his
eye on her. Susanna leaves, and Figaro
resolves to turn the tables on the Count.
Dr. Bartolo, the Countess’s ex-guardian,
and Marcellina, now in the Count’s service,
enter. They wish to prevent Figaro’s
marriage and hold him to his agreement:
to marry Marcellina if he cannot repay
a loan. Bartolo exits. Susanna enters and
has a barbed encounter with Marcellina,
who then departs.
The young page Cherubino dashes in and
tells Susanna of his love for the Countess
and in fact, for any woman, during which
the Count enters. Cherubino hides and
the Count flirts with Susanna. On hearing
the music teacher Don Basilio enter, the
Count hides too, and Basilio gossips about
the goings-on in the castle, including
Cherubino’s love for the Countess. Hearing
this, the Count emerges, uncovering
Cherubino as he does so. Realizing that the
young page has overheard his indiscretions
with Susanna, he sends him off to the army.
Figaro arrives, carrying Susanna’s wedding
veil. He is accompanied by villagers who sing
the Count’s praises. Figaro thanks the Count
for renouncing the wedding-night custom
and asks the Count to give Susanna the
veil as a symbol of purity. The Count says
he would prefer to postpone the ceremony
until he can celebrate the occasion
appropriately. After the villagers leave,
Figaro and Susanna try to persuade the
Count to allow Cherubino to stay, but it is
no use. Figaro then tells the boy about the
rigors of military life.
Act II
The Countess’s bedroom. The Countess
mourns of her husband’s waning affections
for her. Figaro and Susanna arrive and tell
the Countess about the Count’s intentions
with Susanna. They devise a plan. The Count
will be given a note that says the Countess
is having an affair. While the Count is
investigating, Figaro and Susanna will be
quickly married. Susanna is to agree to an
assignation with the Count, but Cherubino
is to go instead, disguised in her clothes.
While Cherubino is being dressed, the Count
knocks on the door and Cherubino hides
in the closet. The Countess assures her
husband, when he hears a noise, that it is
Susanna trying on her wedding dress, but
the Count is suspicious. Determined to
open the door by force, he leaves with
the Countess to find the necessary tools,
allowing Susanna to change places with
Cherubino, and Cherubino to escape
through a window. The Count returns,
discovers Susanna, and has to apologize to
his wife for doubting her. The gardener
Antonio bursts in, complaining that
somebody jumped out of the window.
Although Figaro tries to take the blame,
the Count strongly suspects he is being
duped. Antonio produces papers that Figaro
claims were given to him by Cherubino to
have officially sealed. Marcellina enters with
Dr. Bartolo and Basilio to demand justice.
Figaro must marry Marcellina or repay his
debt. The Count must investigate.
Act III
A hall in the palace. The Countess urges
a reluctant Susanna to go ahead with the
plan and tell the Count that she will meet
him in the garden later. Because Cherubino
is gone, the Countess will impersonate
Susanna. After the Countess leaves, Susanna
overhears the Count talking to himself
about Figaro marrying Marcellina.
Student Night: Inspiring the Children of Today;
Creating the Audiences of Tomorrow
Each year over 2,000 students are introduced to the wonder of opera
through Student Night at the Opera. For many, Student Night at the
Opera is their first time attending an opera.
Once each season, Manitoba Opera
asks our patrons to support this
program through our “Pass the Hat”
initiative which is taking place at all
three performances of The Marriage
of Figaro. Following the intermission,
ushers will be passing baskets to
collect contributions in support
of Student Night at the Opera.
Students from Dauphin’s Barker School at the Opera.
“ Students love the quality of all aspects of the music and the
staging. It's a wonderful way for students to see a superior
performance in a fantastic venue for an affordable price.”
– Cherylene Kentner, Boissevain School
Contributions help to offset the cost of this program, which enables
students from Winnipeg and the surrounding region to attend the
dress rehearsal of our regular productions.
“ We had a big group to the opera, over 20 refugee students
new to Canada, and they just had a fabulous, fabulous time.
They are always thrilled to go! They love the story line,
the music, the costumes, the Concert Hall, and the ENTIRE
experience. This is a BIG highlight for my students…
it’s a huge gift for me, as an educator, to get these
discounted tickets each year.”
– Valerie Pierce, Grant Park High School
With your support, we are able to offer tickets for Student Night
at the Opera for only $12 per student. Your contribution also helps
to pay for the creation of study guides for teachers to help them
prepare students for the performance.
Thank you for helping us to inspire children today
and create the audiences of tomorrow.

Synopsis
The Marriage of Figaro
Continued from page 17
Emboldened, Susanna leads the Count
on with promises of a rendezvous in the
garden. He grows doubtful however, when
he spies her conspiring with Figaro and vows
revenge. Barbarina convinces Cherubino
to come to her house to disguise himself
as a girl so he can stay in the palace.
The Countess enters, wondering if the
plan to catch the Count will work, and
recalling sadly the loss of their love.
Marcellina and Bartolo arrive with Don
Curzio, a lawyer. He announces that Figaro
must either marry Marcellina or repay the
loan. However, it is revealed that Figaro is
actually Marcellina’s son. Marcellina and
Figaro embrace, provoking Susanna until
she too learns the truth. A double wedding
can now be celebrated: Figaro and Susanna,
and Dr. Bartolo and Marcellina.
The Countess then joins Susanna in
composing a letter that invites the Count
to the garden that night. They seal the note
with a pin, which the Count is to return if he
agrees to meet her. Barbarina and a chorus
of young girls (including Cherubino in
disguise) come to pay homage to the
Countess, and then everybody assembles
for the wedding festivities.
The Count’s spirits rise when he receives,
during the course of the ceremony, the
letter from Susanna. Figaro notices that
the Count is preoccupied with a letter,
but cannot guess who has sent it, and he
retrieves the pin, which the Count drops
when he pricks his finger on it.
Act IV
The garden of the castle. Figaro and
Marcellina happen upon Barbarina who is
searching for the pin that the Count asked
her to return to Susanna. Figaro is not aware
that the Countess has been sufficiently
affected by her husband’s behaviour to
make a plan of her own and when he
discovers that Susanna appears to have
suggested a secret meeting with the Count,
he is furious. He, of course, does not know
that the Count will be meeting not Susanna,
but the Countess in Susanna’s clothes. Basilio
counsels that it is wise to play the fool, and
Figaro complains about women and leaves.
Susanna, alone, rhapsodizes on her love
for Figaro, but he, overhearing, thinks she
means the Count. Susanna hides in time
to see Cherubino woo the Countess – now
disguised in Susanna’s dress. The Count
enters makes a passionate declaration
of love to ‘Susanna.’ Figaro enters and
recognizes Susanna disguised as the
Countess. He then behaves as if he believes
she is the Countess and declares his ardent
love for her. Outraged, the Count calls
everyone to witness his denunciation of
his faithless wife, but the real countess
appears and reveals the ruse. Realizing
he is mistaken and has been found out,
he asks the Countess for her forgiveness,
which she grants him and all celebrate
the end of a crazy day.
