O’Neill: I want more big moments
n Dublin delirium as Republic secure Euro 2016 berth
Martin O’Neill wants his Republic of
Ireland team to create more magical
moments when they play at the Euro 2016
finals in France next summer.
The Irish sealed their place by beating
Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in Dublin on Monday,
clinching a 3-1 aggregate win.
Weekend Football
“This is a special night
which cannot be taken
away from us,” said
O’Neill.
“We will have a massive
contingent of fans going
to France and I would
like to emulate the days
of Jack Charlton and
Mick McCarthy.”
The win sparked
emotional scenes from
the home side and its
fans but Bosnia were left
Monday’s results
aggrieved, feeling the
24th minute penalty that
put the Republic ahead
was harsh.
Walters netted a
controversial spot kick
after Bosnia’s Ervin
Zukanovic was
adjudged to have
handled a Daryl Murphy
cross by Dutch referee
Bjorn Kuipers.
It looked more a case
of ball to hand as
Zukanovic had no
chance to avoid the
contact but Walters, back
after his first-leg
suspension, held his
nerve to send his former
Stoke City team-mate
Asmir Begovic the
wrong way from the
spot.
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Martin O’Neill and his
number two Roy Keane celebrate Monday’s final whistle
It was to prove the
game’s pivotal moment.
That put the Irish 2-1
up on aggregate and the
win was all but secured
when Walters volleyed
in on 70 minutes.
The Republic join
Northern Ireland,
England and Wales in
reaching France.
Ireland’s win came six
years after Thierry
Henry’s infamous
handball denied the Irish
a place at the 2010 World
Cup.
On that occasion, the
referee’s failure to spot
the France forward’s
blatant infringement in
the play-off second leg in
Paris led to the
Republic’s heartbreaking
failure to qualify for the
finals in South Africa.
The visitors went close to
opening the scoring when
Crystal Palace midfielder
Yohan Cabaye, one of six
Premier League-based
players starting for
France, fired narrowly
over from 25 yards.
Hodgson made seven
changes to the side that
started the 2-0 defeat by
Spain last Friday, with the
average age of England’s
starting line-up - 24 years
113 days - the youngest
under the current
England boss.
Alli, 19, showed great
maturity to open the
scoring from outside the
area, the Tottenham
midfielder starting the
move with a crunching
tackle before firing home.
Rooney doubled the
lead with a close-range
volley from Raheem
Sterling’s cross, the
culmination of a move
started after Alli again
won the ball in midfield.
Forward Antoine
Griezmann and
midfielder Lassana
DELE ALLI: man of the match performance
Diarra both received
applause all around
Wembley when they
came on for France.
Diarra’s cousin was
killed in the Paris attacks
while Griezmann’s sister
was caught up in it but
escaped unharmed.
England boss Roy
Hodgson said of the
game: “I was pleased the
FA set about showing our
respect and marking this
sad occasion.
“It was handled quite
brilliantly.
“It was a very poignant
occasion and we achieved
all the things we wanted
to achieve in the
remembrance. An act of
defiance was better than
the other alternative.”
France boss Didier
Deschamps told
reporters: “We would like
to thank everyone for
their statements and their
actions of solidarity. We
feel very grateful because
not just the people at
Wembley, but the whole
nation has supported us.”
On fans uniting to sing
La Marseillaise, the 1998
World Cup winner
said: “We felt very, very
strong emotions,
powerful emotions.
Everyone has their own
way of displaying their
emotions but it was
certainly a moment
where everyone came
together.”
