This is when most people begin to lose muscle mass at the alarming rate of 1% a year - especially if one does not exercise. So that’s 20% of muscle mass gone at 60 years of age, unless you pump iron at least 3 times a week. This could leave you frail, and give you a poor posture - setting you up for trips, falls and injury in everyday life. The bottom line here is that if you don’t use it, you lose it! The body loves (and thrives on) body resistance training….if you push on anything, it pushes back and builds back stronger. So if you test your body only 3-4 times a week with resistance, the body benefits massively. In fact, a recent study over six weeks in Europe on a progressive weight training program for 80 year olds, found that after the trial ended, all participants had similar strength to healthy young 18 year-olds. GREAT NEWS for panto fans: the recent revival of the traditional British Christmas staple in Southern California will continue this holiday season with a production of Peter Pan and Tinker Bell – A Pirate’s Christmas at the Pasadena Playhouse from December 9th to January 3rd. Leading the cast will be Sabrina Carpenter as Wendy, Kevin Quinn as Peter Pan, John O’Hurley as Captain Hook, Chrissie Fit as Tinker Bell, Nikki SooHoo as Tiger Lily, and Parvesh Cheena as Smee. Rounding out the cast are two very special and very large dogs. Newfoundland breed brothers Gordon and Bonner will be alternating performances as “Nana,” the Darling family’s four-legged nanny. Director Bonnie Lythgoe returns after last year’s successful Panto at The Playhouse FANS OF DYLAN Thomas will want to attend a reading of the classic “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” presented as a staged reading next month in Glendale. This small cast concert version is told from the viewpoint of the author, who recounts the festive season as a young boy. Written with a strong poetic voice, the prose is filled with the warmth and humor of vivid characters as seen through the eyes of a child. A Child’s Christmas in Wales will be held on Sunday December 6th at 2:00pm at the Boy Scouts of America Hall, 1325 Grandview Avenue in Glendale. November 21, 2015 Page 7 Meet A Member Meet a Member: Adam Linzey Meet Adam Linzey from Oxford who moved to LA 2 years ago to pursue his masters degree as USC School of Cinematic Arts Was there a particular reason you chose LA? I always wanted to live in LA growing up, but it wasn’t until I was accepted to USC’s prestigious film school that I was able to move here. It all happened rather quickly and by surprise actually. Studying here is allowing me to pursue making the films I’ve always dreamed of making. I’m currently in preproduction on my thesis film, which is shooting next month. What do you miss most from home? Obviously family and friends, its always hard to make the timezones work for Skype calls, but the small things I miss are proper pubs and Maltesers. What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since? If so why? I’ve always thought of LA as being beautiful in it’s ugliness. The architecture is often uninspired but it has this gritty urbanity that I find really attractive. The more I explore the city the more I find things to love about it. Does that make sense? What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus Oxford? Driving! Growing up in Oxford I never had to drive and for my first couple of years here I didn’t have car! So LA has been the city I’ve had to learn to drive in - as scary as that sounds. Do you have any hidden gems in LA that you want to share with us? I don’t know if this is hidden, because it’s a huge thing in New York, but the Banana Pudding at Magnolia Bakery (West 3rd and Orlando) is the best dessert I’ve ever had. A lot of people have misconceptions about LA - did you? I suppose I was expecting the city to be more open - like a lot of Americans I know - but because the city is so sprawling and we spend so much time in cars it’s not as personal as you might imagine. What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move The British Weekly Crossword #190 here? Learn to drive, get a car and then explore!
