dirtbike. “If you get your dirtbike,” I told him, “your dad is

The boy became very quiet. So, moving the conversation

Extreme machine news, 

Pietermaritzburg. 

Kawasaki Motorcycles South Africa has 

appointed Extreme Machines at 201 Greyling 

Street, Pietermaritzburg as an official service 

centre for Kawasaki motorcycles and quads. 

Extreme Machines, already a full dealer for 

Aeon and Sym products, can now service and 

repair Kawasaki products without affecting the 

manufacturer’s warranty. 

The Pietermaritzburg motorcycle shop was 

selected as a service centre for Kawasaki after 

the long-standing and fondly remembered 

Kawasaki dealership, The Motorcycle Centre, 

sadly closed down some months ago. Extreme 

Machines workshop manager, Mervin 

Koekemoer, was until he moved to Extreme 

Machines five years ago, workshop manager 

at The Motorcycle Centre, and spent 26 years 

working on Kawasaki machines. A multiple 


KwaZulu-Natal motocross champion in the 

‘70s he has always had a strong following in 

Pietermaritzburg and the KZN Midlands and in 

the last five years many riders whose Kawasakis 

were out of warranty went to him at Extreme 

Machines for servicing and repairs. With the 

formal relationship that now exists with KMSA 

he can now also service and repair machines 

that are still under warranty and save customers 

the 200 km round trip to the Durban dealership. 

Anel Vlok, the owner of Extreme Machines, is 

excited about the new situation. “We’ve bought 

all the necessary Kawasaki-specific diagnostic 

equipment and special tools, and the workshop 

is undergoing a full revamp,” she says. “It’s 

going well and the fact that we’re now part of 

the official Kawasaki family is good for KMSA, 

good for us, and most importantly, good for the 

customer.”

Wunderlich 

Hybrid BMW 

R1200GS LC With 

Electric 2WD 

BMW aftermarket parts specialist 

Wunderlich really knows how to 

promote itself. The German company 

is known for its one-off machines 

and concepts, some which have 

tipped BMW’s hand when it comes to 

new models. For a boutique German 

brand, it is impressive that it is 

known around the world. 

So, it shouldn’t surprise us that 

Wunderlich is grabbing headlines 

once again, this time with an 

intriguing concept: a two-wheel drive 

BMW R1200GS that uses a hybrid 

drivetrain with an electric frontend 

that was developed with Italy’s 

electric specialist Evolt. 

Wunderlich calls its creation the 

BMW R1200GS LC, and it features a 

10 kW hub motor on its front wheel, 

in addition to the GS’s boxer-twin 

gas engine. The electric motor has 

regenerative braking, which helps 

charge its modest battery pack 

(located under the front beak, to 

our eye). 

The front wheel motor is good 

for roughly 12 mph when used 

by itself, and can even go in 

reverse – handy for when 

you’re parking your nearly 

600 lbs on a slope. 

Like other two-wheel 

drive off-roaders, namely 

the bikes made by 

Christini, the 2WD 

system has advantages 

when riding in the dirt, 

namely that the frontwheel 

drive can help pull 

the motorcycle through 

a turn, and add drive in slippery 

conditions. 

While the benefit is namely greater 

for greener riders, we would 

imagine that the Wunderlich system 

would be a boon to a bike as heavy 

as the BMW R1200GS when in the 

thick stuff, no matter the rider’s 

skill level. 

We’re not sure how the 2WD 

system knows how much power 

to give and when, but the idea is 

certainly a clever addition of a future 

technology. Now, the big question is: 

how long will it take before we see a 

brand like BMW or KTM adopt it?

less demanding on the rider. The engine 

performance is also enhanced through 

a new exhaust system, with a distinctive 

resonant note. 

The new Tiger Explorer features a host of

they want to negotiate well-made roads and broken 

terrain in all conditions, the Tiger Explorer offers as 

standard multi-channel switchable ABS and traction 

control on the entry level XR and XC models. The 

other four variants come with cornering-optimised 

ABS and traction control, to ensure superb stability 

even when approaching the most challenging apex. 

The Explorer XCx, XCa, XRx and XRT all feature an 

Inertial Measurement Unit that, through a series 

of strategically positioned sensors, monitors 

and responds to the bike’s movement status,

What’s green, got lotsa muscle and loses its temper when 

you give it stick? The Hulk! Yup, him too, but the 2016 

KX450F is just the same. 

We featured an international report 

on this bike two issues back, but 

we were actually the last South 

African publication to swing our 

leg over this newcomer and we got to take it out 

to the famous Chestnut MX park on a balmy 

(read 35 degree) Gauteng summer day. 

This is good – and bad. Bad because it’s been 

everywhere – good because it’s properly run in 

and we were not too concerned about revving it 

and also about scuffing a brand new bike. 

When we got to the track, we were pleased to 

see them busy with an earth mover undertaking 

some maintenance. Chestnut is a great MX 

track – clean toilets and decent facilities, 

including a little tuck shop on the weekends. 

The track is flowing, not too tight with lots of 

big jumps and berms – all pretty well designed 

with safe landings. There are not thousands 

of whoops – only a small section really – and 

it would be lekker if they were a bit bigger. A 

great track for riders of all skill levels. 

This heatwave is incredible – the car told 

us that it was 35 degrees, but the beauty of 

sneaking out during the week means that we 

got the track to ourselves – no dust to contend 

with. But the surrounding farmlands tell a 

bleak tale – dust devils chased each other 

across ploughed fields – without a cloud to be 

seen… 

When you read our feature two months back, 

we mentioned all the changes on the new 

model – we won’t bore you by repeating all 

of the detail, but at a glance, here’s what 

Kawasaki has done to their newest track eater:

improvements are aimed at increasing 

mid- to top-end power and over-rev,

The frame is also completely new. It 

weighs 1.4 kilogrammes less than the 

previous frame, and it’s slimmer— 

by 6mm—to improve rider comfort. 

Targeted changes to the frame spars 

are said to improve the bike’s handling. 

These changes, together with slimmer 

bodywork, make the 2016 KX450F look 

and feel drastically different than last 

year – we’ll talk about that shortly. 

There’s also an improved swingarm with 

better torsional rigidity for increased 

rear-wheel traction. And although the 

Showa suspension isn’t new, the forks 

both have new settings to match the 

chassis. The fork has new thinner inner 

tubes that save weight and increase 

rigidity. 

ON THE TRACK 

We gave the bike to our resident MX racer 

Will Sutherland who owned and raced 

the previous model – and he had nothing 

but praise for the improvements on the 

new model. 

Here is his opinion on the new bike.

The slimmer frame has made cornering 

a breeze on the new machine, with the 

radiators also at an angle makes the bike 

feel a lot more slender and easier to hold 

on when squeezing with the knees. The 

launch control system has been improved 

much better than the previous model. 

I really battled with the first generation of 

KYB SSF air forks, they were quite harsh 

and we could never quite get them set up 

right. The front end on this bike felt way 

better – and we rode the bike as we got it. 

The new mapping tool is fantastic, letting 

you save up to 7 different map presets, 

way better than the 3 plugs you got with 

the older models. They have also added a 

resonator to the header pipe which gives 

the bike a smoother sound and also a 

smooth power curve. 

Kawasaki have done some homework and 

have produced another real competitive 

machine right off the show room floor! 

A great bike to ride – right up with the best 

I’ve ever ridden.

It’s amazing how diverse the World 

of off-road vehicles, whether on 

two wheels or four, really is. One 

minute we were charging around 

some mealie fields in the fastest 

off-road experience on the planet, 

and the next we were making our 

way majestically around similar 

field at a stately 32km/h…..the top 

speed of the new Kubota 4x4 diesel 

utility vehicle. 

For all that this 4 wheeler is just as 

high tech and purpose built as any 

terrain gobbling speedster. This 

one is for heavy duty use on the 

farm or construction site. It has the 

sturdiest chassis ever built into a 

side by side, and the simple reason 

is that this is a work horse. For an 

engine, Kubota offers its proven 

four-stroke diesel technology in 

the form of an 898cc three-cylinder 

diesel engine that is liquid cooled. 

In the RTV, this puts out up to 

21 horsepower and buckets of 

torque. Getting that power to the 

ground is a VHT (variable hydro 

transmission). Unlike a belt drive 

this setup never freewheels. This 

also means that engine braking 

takes place till the moment the 

machine stops. In fact, this braking 

action is so effective you’ll hardly 

ever use the brakes, though it does 

have them. The RTV uses front and 

rear enclosed wet-type disc brakes. 

Being fully enclosed, they are not 

affected by water or debris and 

their performance is consistent. It 

comes standard with four wheel 

drive with diff lock, high and low 

ratio and lots of other features 

made to cope with working in tough 

conditions where a conventional 4x4 

bakkie would struggle. Although it 

is unlikely to fall over as a result of 

the driver speeding, there is always 

the possibility of a terrain induced 

mishap, in which case the driver 

and his helper will be protected by a 

massive roll cage and lap seatbelts.

Everything on the Kubota is about being 

practical and doing a tough job. The 

steering is a power-assist setup so 

turning pin to pin is easy and the tight 

turning circle assists in weaving in and 

out of obstacles.To get you over the 

rough stuff, the front end suspension is 

an independent MacPherson strut-type 

while the rear is a semi-independent 

DeDion axle with leaf springs and shock 

absorber. The low-point on the unit is 

the axle where you still get 8.5-inches of 

clearance. Vital underside components 

are tucked up high and any vulnerable 

arrears have guards and shields. The 

air-cleaner is situated high up in the 

nose of the vehicle, as is the radiator and 

the brake system. The engine is midmounted 

with the battery right alongside 

in a protected position. The driver and his 

mate have large, somewhat upright seats 

with lap-belts and lots of handles to hold 

onto when the going gets rough. 

The prime purpose of this side by side 

is to carry heavy loads. It has a huge, 

very robust “bak” behind the front seats, 

which can be unlocked and manually 

tilted. This means that if it has a heavy 

load, the load will have to be removed 

before the load bed can be tilted, which 

seems to defeat the objective a bit. It 

has a tailgate which can be lowered for 

unloading or carrying long cargo like 

poles. The chassis is strong enough to fit 

a towbar, and despite the low top speed it 

has more than enough power and torque 

to pull a trailer. 

It is very pleasant to drive, and is quiet 

and comfortable. The exhaust note is 

pleasant and low toned, and it is easy to 

carry on a normal conversation in the 

vehicle. It has a cigarette lighter type 

power socket and powerful hand brake. 

A special feature is the Noddy car hooter, 

guaranteed to make anyone stepping in 

front leap back in shock….although for 

sure they will smile at the toy town beep! 

An interesting standard feature, which 

we discovered when changing a tyre after 

getting a puncture (and there is no spare, 

or wheel changing tools, on an almost 

R300 000 vehicle) is that each wheel 

is held on by two studs and two wheel 

nuts. We are not sure why, but there it 

is. We didn’t drive it in the dark, but the 

headlights look modern and capable, with 

halogen globes, so this workhorse should 

be able to continue working after hours 

as well. This is not a small machine 

and it’s not suited for swamp crossings, 

racing around sand pits or jumping 

anything. It is not that kind of ATV. What it 

is suited for is work, and lots of it. 

The diesel Kubota should appeal to those 

who need a tough load carrying vehicle in 

places where space is an issue, perhaps 

a farm where space and terrain dictates 

that a small vehicle is needed, or perhaps 

in a mine, factory or aircraft hanger. 

One thing is for sure, this is not a toy for 

leisure use.. It’s one tough mutha ready 

to do a full days’ work and then more.

MAKE LIFE A RIDE. Story by Kurt Beine 

Germany has been hosting this event for 14 years, a BMW 

Expo of note, where BMW showcases their amazing variety 

of bikes and gear, this was the inaugural event for BMW 

South Africa, Clarens in the Free State was the town of 

choice, reasonably central from most main centres, and a 

holiday/weekend destination of note. 

After a great ride down on Saturday morning on my 

old faithful 990 I arrived in Clarens, it was packed with 

BMWs, parking was hard to find, even for a motorcycle, 

after checking in at the Protea Hotel I went off exploring, 

camera in hand, BMW had cordoned off the entire town 

square. Just short of 2000 people were booked to see the 

festivities of the weekend, which started on Friday, through 

until Sunday. I’m sure there were many more, all sorts of 

bike brands were evident, but BMW was the brand to beat, 

all genres of BMW, GS being the most popular, RT, RS, GT, 

GTL, you name them, they were there. 

First to be seen in the Expo area was the entire range, 

with jaw dropping discounts on each model if you signed 

up right there, I think quite a few people went to just see 

the expo, but walked away with a brand new bike, I know 

of one such a person, I could hear the grin over the phone, 

Joe, enjoy your GSA LC... 

On the other side of the tent was the entire BMW clothing 

range and accessories, from the adventure gear to the 

new style of clothing designed around the BMW R NineT, 

as well as the entire range of BMW helmets. Thereafter 

I found more exhibits, Touratech had a large range of 

goodies, adventure kit of note, their own bikes blinged to 

the hilt, Wild@heart had an impressive range of adventure 

accessories, Safari 4X4 were right next door, sporting an

equally impressive array of adventure goodies, Victorinox, 

famous for their Swiss Knives were there, this time with 

their equally fantastic range of timepieces. Stander 

Customs were there with a very unique motorcycle tie 

down system on show, SBK Eyewear had some pretty trick 

sunglasses available, and Indigosat also had very compact 

tracking systems available. 

The only way to quench the thirst I had worked up from 

all these mouth-watering items was to visit the VIP tent, 

snacks and drinks were the order of the day, BMW always 

go large, this event was no exception. 

Mattie Griffith, Street Bike Freestyle Rider of note, with a 

highly modified BMW 800 (engine is stock standard) put 

on a show 3 times a day, I was there just in time to see the 

2nd show of the day, Mattie does things with a motorcycle 

which are beyond belief, he does not ride it, he WEARS it... 

To describe his antics would be very difficult, they just had 

to be seen to be fully appreciated.... 

In the afternoon I took a ride down to the bottom of town, 

BMW had a large range of bikes available for test rides 

to Fouriesburg and back, the whole day was fully booked, 

the bikes worked hard, this gave any licensed rider the 

ideal opportunity to look/see/feel/ride virtually any bike 

they were interested in. Metzeler Tyres had a complete 

tyre changing facility in a trailer well-stocked with tyres 

for anyone in need of fresh rubber, and across the road 

Country Trax had a short enduro track routed out where 

people could test their skills on a 1200 GS or an 800 GS. The 

ever smiling Jan Du Toit (Jan Staal) was in charge of this 

attraction, various Coutry Trax instructors were on hand to 

show people the way. I bumped into Jolandi Rust, the first 

female to circumnavigate Africa solo by motorcycle, on the 

best bike for the job at the time, a BMW 650 GS Dakar, she 

is now an accredited off road instructor for Country Trax, 

and certainly knows her stuff... one day, perhaps, she’ll 

send us her story… 

That night the VIP tent was the place to be again, various 

SA bands had been shipped in to perform, Die Heuwels 

Fantasties, Mean Mr. Mustard, Just Jinger, DJ Bon Tempo, 

CrashCarBurn and local rock band, Rooibaardt all took 

turns to entertain the crowds over the weekend, a job well 

done. I missed one or two by only arriving on Saturday 

morning, next time I’ll be there from Friday.... 

I chatted to the BMW team who put this event together 

and they reckoned the event success had exceeded all 

expectations. Feedback from the local community, festival 

goers and exhibiters was overwhelmingly positive. Alex is 

determined to make this BMW Motorrad Days Festival the 

leading music and motorcycle event in South Africa. 

Each night a lucky participant also walked away with either 

a BMW F 800 R or a BMW R nineT in a lottery draw. 

This event venue was an excellent choice, the Golden Gate 

area and surrounding routes is very scenic, Clarens has 

been a ‘Go To’ town for years, Lesotho is just down the road, 

there are accommodation options to suit all pockets, which 

I understand were all fully booked for this weekend, next 

year, wherever the event is hosted, book well in advance...

Kyle Dohne, a South African farmer by trade, is a world record 

holder for 24 hour paddling record on an Epic V10. The social rider 

has never raced professionally but this year he aims to conquer 

Roof of Africa. 

Why are you participating in ROA? 

It has always been on my bucket list to do, however I am also doing 

it for my best friend Matthew MacDonald (28) who was diagnosed 

with Leukaemia recently, thus I am dedicating this race to him and 

all other Leukaemia patients fighting this dreaded disease. 

What Class are you in for this year's ROA? 

Gold. With the Roof of Africa being possibly one of the most 

extreme races in the world, I have decided to do the Gold Class 

because nobody ever prepares or trains for Leukaemia or the very 

toxic and strenuous treatment that follows it. 

How many times have you participated in ROA? 

This is my first attempt. 

What are your goals for this year ROA? 

To have enough will power to cross the finish line for my friend, 

Matthew MacDonald. 

What can the spectators expect from you? 

Keep a sharp look out for number 65 and throw me a tow rope 

please. 

I am an outgoing and bubbly 17 year old who is passionate about Extreme 

Enduro as well as Motocross. I’ve been riding for just over four years, in 

this time I’ve represented Team South Africa at the African MX of Nations 

twice, at the Southern Off-road Challenge in Namibia, was placed third in 

the Enduro World Cross Country Championship in 2014, was the 

youngest woman to complete Bronze at the Roof Of Africa at the age of 

sixteen in 2014, placed third at the 2015 African MX of Nations in the 

Ladies and was placed third in the Ladies South African National 

Motocross Championship in 2015. 

What Class are you in for this year's ROA? 

Silver 

How many times have you participated in ROA? 

2014 Roof of Africa, completed Bronze. 

Why are you participating in ROA? 

I love extreme Enduro and the challenge of pushing myself to the limit 

and beyond. An event like the Roof takes you out of your comfort zone 

mentally and physically. 

What are your goals for this year’s ROA? 

To finish silver. 

A message for spectators? 

The most rewarding part of my single Roof experience is the 

overwhelming support I was showered in at the finish of Roof Of Africa 

2014. The Cheering and positive vibe given by the spectators is what 

keeps me going. I can’t wait to be a part of this again at the finish of Roof 

Of Africa 2015! So look out for me on bike number 124!!

2016 YAMAHA YZ250X

Yamaha’s 2-stroke trail bike. We love the smell of 2-stroke in the morning! 

We are not entirely sure what happened with this manufacturer in the recent past, but all 

of a sudden, they are building new dirt bikes in every shape, size and form that a petrol 

head could possibly want - and that’s FANTASTIC!!! 

Let’s start at the beginning: In 2015, Yamaha 

unveiled the incredible new YZ250FX, an offroad 

variant of its popular YZ250F motocross 

model, along with an all-new WR250F. As 

expected, the YZ250FX is a high-performing 

machine. When the YZ250FX was released, 

Yamaha was very clear that this was 

a bike aimed at trail riding and more 

gnarly terrain – and Young Brett 

Swanepoel proved them correct at last 

years Roof. But, as we all know, the 

world is still two stroke crazy with the 

European factories constantly refining 

them and winning championships 

all over the place on them – and the 

Japanese bike fans had to modify their 

smokers to try and compete. 

Yamaha has gone a similar route to what 

they did with the FX with the all-new YZ250X, 

which is an off-road variant of the undeniably 

brilliant YZ250 two-stroke motocross bike. If 

ever there has been a bike that has stood the 

test of time, this is one of them. While the YZ250FX 

fits right between the WR250F enduro bike and the 

YZ250F motocross bike, YZ250X sits in its own category 

for Yamaha being its only two-stroke enduro bike, 

which has been derived from the legendary YZ250 and 

massaged into an off-road winner.

from Yamaha and - at last they have delivered

the first of what we hope is a barrage 

of new models. And it all kinda makes 

sense. Why the heck they didn’t do this 

years ago is something only Yamaha can 

tell you. The MX bikes two-stroke engine 

is fast, crisp, and impressively powerful. 

It boasts huge hit in the mid-range and 

typically requires very little by way of 

jetting changes in order to achieve great 

bark and snappy throttle response. 

The aluminium frame and KYB Speed 

Sensitive Fork make for nimble handling 

and amazing cornering. So it’s really a no 

brainer. 

Off the cuff we have to say that this bike 

is custom made for tight, twisty trails. 

Forget about long distance riding on 

gravel roads, the vibration through the 

pegs will have you itching like mad. But 

please do go and ride the twistiest trails 

you can find. We aimed at every single 

spoor rutted road that we could find and 

opened the throttle. If you’ve ever ridden 

a YZ, you’ll know that for trail riding it can 

be quite a handful with a huge midrange 

hit and wild on-off characteristics. 

With the X, Yamaha has not toned down 

the power, but made it much more 

manageable. They managed this without 

adding flywheel weight, Yamaha got 

some additional smoothness with less 

compression but actually boosted the 

So what have they done? 

The features that make the bike more 

specifically an off-road racer are the 

18-inch rear wheel, rear brake protector, 

aluminum side stand, sealed O-ring chain, 

YZ-F style pegs, gripper seat, narrow fuel 

tank, narrow expansion chamber wide 

range transmission, fuel tank with reserve 

position, updated digital CDI ignition 

system and specific Dunlop enduro 

tyres. The rest is quality fare – Nissn 

petal disc brakes front and rear, tapered 

handlebars, nothing too flash about the 

plain black header pipe and crisp exhaust. 

Ergonomics are exactly what you’d expect 

from an honest, no nonsense motorcycle, 

slim, light and not overly tall. 

We spend a great couple of hours playing 

on the new bike – and we had the added 

bonus of being able to chop and change 

between a new WR250 while we were 

busy – so you get a pretty good idea of 

the difference between 2-stroke and four 

stroke application.

overall power with a raised exhaust port. 

Additionally the powervalve opens slower 

and helps smooth the delivery. First gear 

is quite long and the engine is plenty 

strong, you hardly feel the wide ratio 

spacing in the gears in shifts between 

3-4-5. The traditional YZ sign-off at peak 

power is gone in favour of a very long 

over-rev character. 

In the tight stuff, we found that the MX 

characteristics of the YZ chassis have 

been enhanced – this bike is just so well 

behaved, nimble and forgiving. It has 

every bit of YZ character that we love, the 

sharp crisp power, light handling feel and 

a chassis that has no extra bits that do 

not need to be there. Enormous fun with 

a capital F. As good as the four stroke WR 

was on the day, in the tight stuff, the YZ-X 

won the race hands down 

The suspension is very plush – perfect 

for trail riding. We found out that it rides 

on the same springs as the YZ MX bike 

but uses less low-speed compression 

damping and a little more high-speed 

compression valving internally to give 

a ride that is much more compliant on 

the small bumps. It uses more stroke 

but stays away from ever being harsh. 

We were very impressed at how well it 

worked in all the terrain we rode both 

fast and slow. This bike is just so easy 

and is too much fun to ride. 

AT A GLANCE

Gnarly terrain 

The bike feels very light and nimble and 

is not a handful to manoeuvre in the 

rough stuff at all. The ground clearance 

is perfect – we were worried that we’d 

bash it a bit – as of yet the guys from 

Biking have not fitted any Hyde goodies. 

The bike also has plenty of bottom end 

grunt, but we did find that in the really 

silly stuff, she does tend to stall. From 

what we’ve read up on the bike, Yamaha 

did not weigh the flywheel – and for day 

to day fun trail riding we’d say that that 

would not be necessary – but, if you 

are going to ride long sections of rocks, 

we’d get that flywheel weighted for just 

that bit of rotating mass that makes 

it less of an issue. We’ll ride one with 

a weighted flywheel soon and tell you 

what that is like. 

Conclusion: 

This is quite possibly the most 

unpretentious, simple, fun bike that we’ve 

ridden all year. Forget about all the new 

“Fancy schmancy” technologies hitting 

the trails all over the place, Yamaha has 

delivered a lightweight, fast, grin inducing 

bike that begs to be ridden hard. The 

bike feels like the complete package as 

far as two-strokes go, boasting power on 

tap, nimble and precise handling in tight 

technical terrain, along with a sound that 

brings a smile to your face. The only thing 

that is missing is an electric start. We had 

a complete blast. Go and take a ride 

on one, you’ll see exactly 

what we mean.

that famous Vietnam 

war movie with the pilots 

surging up a jungle 

river in search of their prey with 

Wagners “Ride of the Valkeries” 

blaring through their earphones? 

Those Hughey helicopters were 

absolutely perfect for their task 

that day…thundering up the tropical 

waterway at low level to deliver 

their awesome deadly payload to an 

unsuspecting enemy. 

Just as those helicopters were 

the best machines possible in 

that situation, the new Can-Am 

Maverick is absolutely the ideal 

vehicle for attacking a rough, twisty 

off road route. Everything about it 

is designed for one purpose only - 

covering as much ground as quickly 

as possible. 

The latest Maverick has an 

updated 1000cc turbocharged 

powerplant (yup even stronger than 

the first turbo unit…), the latest 

Fox coil spring tuned long-travel 

suspension, electrically assisted 

power steering, disc brakes 

all round capable of stopping 

an eighteen wheeled truck, all 

encapsulated in a high tech tubular 

chassis, complete with protective 

roll bar. 

All it lacks is a quality sound 

system and headphones to get the 

driver in the mood with the same 

“Ride of the Valkeries”! 

It is absolutely incredible how the 

original, rather agricultural and 

toy-like two seater off road buggy 

has evolved into this serious off 

road missile. 

Manufactured by Can Am in 

Canada, MotoNetix in Midrand sells 

and races these hi performance 

funsters into South Africa. 

Driving the Matrix is like no other 

four wheeled vehicle. The driver 

is strapped into a form hugging 

bucket seat, the passenger 

likewise, and with everything very 

logically to hand the stage is set 

for the adrenaline rush of the 

century. The Matrix has the choice 

of two or four wheel drive in either 

sports or economy mode, and 

also a three position setting for 

the electric power steering. It has 

a fully automatic gearbox which 

features a high or low ratio setting, 

as well as a strong handbrake, and 

disc brakes on all four wheels. The 

1000cc V twin turbo motor is mid 

mounted, and well protected from 

any possible impact damage, with 

a high mounted air intake to make 

crossing deep water easier. With 

its’ high seating position and high 

stance offering plenty of ground 

clearance the driver certainly feels 

in command.

On the move one feels immediately that 

this is no playmobile. 

The growl from the turbo motor is 

aggressive, although very pleasing, 

especially as the vehicle accelerates. 

And boy, does it accelerate! As the 

throttle is pressed it instantly picks up 

speed with no turbo-lag whatsoever, 

and it keeps accelerating as long as 

the driver keeps his foot down. It will 

literally hurtle down a path as fast as a 

speeding bullet, the only limiting factor 

being the skill and bravery of the driver. 

Rough terrain, including rocks, logs 

and erosion induced ruts are simply 

skimmed over almost unnoticed as 

the long travel and race proven shocks 

soak up the bumps. Because of the 

extremely light weight there is virtually 

no wheelspin, even on loose sand in two 

wheel drive. What makes driving the 

Maverick fast (or in fact at any speed) 

enjoyable is the complete lack of shock 

or negative feedback through either the 

suspension or the steering mechanism. 

This thing is a machine, and the thrill 

of driving it fast off road is unmatched 

by even very much more expensive and 

sophisticated racers. Everything is just 

instant, like a big bore MX bike. It goes, 

turns and stops without hesitation, 

obediently delivering the drivers input 

without the slightest hesitation and 

with incredible force. If you want to 

go fast its’ a rocket….ask it to stop it 

does so with the power of a twenty ton 

anchor heading for the seabed, turn 

and it follows the steering input to the 

millimeter. 

The quality and performance of every 

component is perfectly matched, and 

the setup of the vehicle is exceptionally 

good. The result is that anyone prepared 

to ask any sort of speed from the 

Maverick can go fast in safety. Every 

driver feels like a champion.

Even more impressive is to watch or 

passenger with a very skilled driver 

with lots of experience on the Maverick. 

It’s like watching a master musician or 

veteran combat pilot at work. 

Watching Werner and Henno from 

MotoNetix behind the wheel was like 

watching a great performer on stage. 

An interesting variation on the new 

Maverick is the four seat version. 

Mechanically, it is identical to the twoseater, 

but of course it has a longer 

wheelbase. Driving the longer wheelbase 

model is quite interesting in that it has 

a very different feel over rough terrain, 

especially when cornering fast. It is 

extraordinarily stable in a straight line, 

and happily rails around even rough turns 

at speed. One of the biggest differences 

is that with four passengers on board 

even though the driver feels in complete 

control there are three times more 

nervous people than in the two-seater! 

Feedback from the passengers on the day 

was very positive, although there was a 

lot of screaming everyone felt very safe… 

At the end of the day the Can Am 

Maverick is quite possibly the fastest, 

most comfortable 4 wheel drive vehicle 

currently available for off-road use. 

The only time your 4x4 bakkie will be 

faster in on a straight(ish) open road, 

where the Maverick will top out at a 

guestimated 150ishkm/h. 

This four-wheel drive will go anywhere 

– slowly (errr not gonna happen), or at 

hyper speed, and in armchair comfort...

Who says you need a state of the art 

factory replica race bike to have fun 

riding off road? Well nobody really, but 

just look at what hits the trail every 

Sunday morning. Certainly around 

Johannesburg and other popular spots 

around Gauteng, as well as down in Natal 

and the Cape, a Sunday morning will 

see parking areas around popular riding 

spots like Maraisburg and DeWildt filled 

with polished bakkies and SUV’s pulling 

trailers loaded with the latest in off road 

racing technology. Of course the latest and 

greatest will ensure a wonderful morning 

enjoying probably some of the best offroad 

riding conditions in the world, and so 

many of us are lucky enough to be able to 

head for the hills whenever we feel like it. 

However, there are a lot of riders, from 

absolute newcomers to old dogs who 

just don’t have around 100K spare to put 

a plaything in their garage. Also, used 

flagship models are not always the answer 

because of the cost of parts and the effort 

needed to keep them in tip top shape for 

off road riding. 

Another factor in all of this is that to 

become a good off road rider, and by that 

we mean someone who can ride one of the 

new style race replicas competently and 

safely, they have to find the right bike to 

learn and gain experience on in the first 

place. 

So when Honda introduced us to their 

latest tiddler XR125 and XR 150 we 

decided to go back to grass roots and see 

what they are all about. 

The first thing that struck us about the 

latest versions of a bike Honda has had 

in their catalogue since the late seventies 

is how modern and up to date they look. 

Honda, in fact seems to lead mainstream 

motorcycling when it comes to styling, and 

these two little beauties are no exception. 

They look stunning in their black and white 

livery, with some shiny bits like chrome 

rims and glittering modern headlights. 

The motors are both air-cooled, overhead 

cams and five speed gearboxes finished in 

standard Japanese silver-grey. Everything 

about them exudes Honda quality, from 

the plastic body panels and instrument

(speedo and a few warning lights) to the 

modern shaped indicators. They have 

conventional front forks, single back 

shock, square tube swing arm and trail 

type tyres suitable for road and off road 

work. In times gone by they would have 

been called “Street scramblers” and it’s 

a pity this term has fallen into disuse 

because it describes them perfectly. 

We decided to use them to go the Nite-X 

event, and rode them from Benoni to 

Randburg using as much off-road track 

as possible, and when we had to find a 

road, it would be either a dirt road or a 

secondary one. With this objective in mind 

we set off after having put R50 (just on 4 

litres) worth of 93 octane into each tank. 

Four and a half hours later we arrived at 

Bikers Warehouse on Malibongwe Drive 

in Randburg, a trip which usually takes 

about 45 minutes in reasonable traffic 

along the freeway! 

Frustrating? Nah! 

This was probably the most enjoyable four 

and a half hours we have spent on a little 

bike in a long time, simply because we 

made the time. Firstly we haven’t tried to 

get to Randburg from the East Rand on 

dirt for years, and it proved to be quite a 

challenge. Our long forgotten route, which 

we could once use from Fourways to 

Springs without using the tar at all is now 

long gone. Vast tracts of once open area 

are now closed housing estates, squatter 

camps, gated suburbia or shopping 

malls. It seems it won’t be too long before 

Midrand becomes the ever expanding glue 

joining Johannesburg and Pretoria into a 

huge traffic besieged megatropolis! Quite 

sad in many ways really. 

Despite the ballooning of people’s living 

space North and Eastwards, we still 

found lots of back roads and country 

pathways to meander our way westwards 

toward Randburg. 

The two little Hondas took everything into 

their purring stride…they proved to be 

willing and more than able to effortlessly 

negotiate everything we threw at them. 

And happily look for more. Firstly there 

is nothing to tell the difference between 

the two other than the XR 150 and XR 

125 badges on the tank shroud. Even the 

engines are difficult to tell apart. Once 

on the move there is very little difference 

either, except that the 150 has slightly 

more power, which is only noticeable 

on pull-off or up a steep incline. On the 

road the 125 is able to close the initial 

gap the bigger bike can pull by using the 

slipstream effect. Once alongside the 150 

they purr along together like a pair of 

contented thoroughbreds. 

One of the very nice aspects of riding 

these bikes is that they are so quiet and 

smooth…everyone likes them, and we 

found ourselves chatting happily with 

everyone we came across on our ride, 

from two trail riders on their MX bikes to 

a cyclist we shared a trail with for a while, 

and even with people in cars we pulled 

up alongside when we had to use and 

ordinary road. 

Even though they can by no means 

be called fast, we never once found 

ourselves in a situation where we felt 

bored or irritated with having to ride at 

speeds much slower than we usually 

do. Of course they would be totally out 

of place touring on the open road, but 

then again this is subjective, and a group 

of 16year olds on Honda XR125’s would 

probably have the time of their lives 

riding to Durban during a school holiday. 

What’s more these bikes would make the 

trip without missing a beat. 

Why are they so good? Well for a start 

Honda have been making these particular 

models for a long time, and through 

evolution an already sound design has 

been updated and honed to be the best 

small capacity dual purpose bike Honda 

can possibly market at, what these days 

is a very, very reasonable price. They 

are bullet proof mechanically, they have 

more comfortable saddles than almost 

any other off road bike ever made, and 

this includes some very expensive dual 

purpose tourers. 

They have front and rear disc brakes that 

work well, their ergonomics suited anyone 

from a small adolescent or a slender lady 

to a very big and tall friend who took one 

up a steep rocky hill. On the open freeway 

during our return trip from Randburg we 

rode them non-stop, in the dark, where 

they also didn’t miss a beat, chasing their 

headlight beams at a steady 100km/h. 

What’s more, even after this frantic 

freeway flogging, we didn’t switch onto 

reserve, and in almost 150 km’s didn’t use 

up the initial R100 we put in at the start. 

Although the XR150l seems to be getting 

the nod from most riders, the XR125l 

still has a quality that the other hasn’t, 

incredible fuel economy. We have a mate 

who owns both and he says: “A 125 is a 

125 and a 150 is a 150. I can squeeze as 

much as 45 kilometers to a liter (eco run) 

from the XR 125L. While normal riding 

gets me anywhere between 36-40 km/l. 

The XR150L yields 32-35 kilometers per 

liter. Still not bad for a dual-purpose goanywhere 

bike.” 

So looking back on our Saturday adventure 

on these two little Honda’s we came to the 

conclusion that for about the same money 

as a really good overhaul of a state of the 

art race replica off road bike you could 

have a bike which is wonderful fun off road 

and a great commuter on the tar. 

For a schoolboy restricted to a 125, the 

XR 125 would do everything it needs to, 

and as a first motorcycle would provide a 

lifetime of memories no subsequent bike 

would ever be able to match.

What would you do if you had a 

great big hole in your back garden? 

If you are Mike Puzey you turn it 

into an action packed, condensed 

enduro circuit and invite a whole 

bunch of adrenaline junkies to come 

and race! And then invite all your 

friends, and their friends, to come 

and watch. And because you have 

to work all day to earn a buck, as 

do your friends, run the race under 

lights at night. Oh sorry, Mikes’ 

race was on a Saturday, well then 

at least you could get all the boring 

stuff like playing golf and tennis, 

kid’s swimming galas and all those 

events out of the way first. 

Mike Puzey owns a place called 

“Puzey’s Biker Warehouse” out on 

Malibongwe Drive heading towards 

Lanseria, where he sells mainly off 

road bikes, including Husqvarnas, 

Puzeys and lots of other stuff, as 

well as everything you can think of 

for off road riding like the kit, parts, 

specialist lubricants and much, 

much more. Being a jet-fuelled 

extrovert who can’t sit still for one 

minute, organising four of these 

Nite-X racing evenings a year is kids 

stuff for him, and anyone leaving 

a frigging big hole in his back yard 

with a pond at the bottom is just 

asking for trouble! In two -twos 

he has sorted the whole (no pun 

intended) out into an awesome off 

road circuit, complete with some 

highly technical sections like the 

“Rock garden”, the “See-saw”, the 

“Hanging Bridge”, it’s partner the 

“Floating Bridge”, a real “Freestyle” 

ramp over the water for the braver 

riders to leap a vertical cliff, and 

much, much more. For riders it’s 

challenging, in fact it’s downright 

intimidating. 

For spectators, who are there as 

Mike Puzey and some of his friends 

in the trades’ guests, as there is 

no admission fee, the entire show 

can be seen from almost any point 

around the rim of the big hole. 

It is even more spectacular than 

watching moto-x in a stadium. 

What makes it more awesome is 

that in many places the bikes are 

racing just centimetres away from 

the natural grandstand. The whole 

(that unintended pun again) place 

is floodlit, and the atmosphere 

is unmatched by any other two 

wheeled event. There is also a pub 

floating in the middle of the pond at 

the bottom, where the racers roar 

past each side during a lap if you 

really want to be close to the action! 

The excitement of the setting and 

the anticipation of the spectators 

seems to motivate the competitors 

almost into a frenzy….there is

never a boring moment when the bikes 

are racing…nose to tail they glitter in 

the well-lit parts of the track, and the 

spectacle as they flash from obstacle to 

obstacle, often disappearing into unlit 

areas through the thorn trees only to 

re-emerge into the light seconds later 

like bolts of snarling lightning, is just 

incredible. 

The action is fast and furious, with 

classes ranging from junior novice to 

toughened expert seniors, Many of the 

big names compete - and the system 

of heats leading to the finals of each 

class is well thought out and provides 

non-stop action all the way. A huge 

crowd of spectators, massed several 

deep right around the course also adds 

to the excitement. Surprisingly this is a 

very safe form of racing, and there were 

very few injuries, with battered pride 

seeming to be the most serious, as 

most spills were at slow speed. 

At the end of the evening everyone, from 

the racers, spectators and sponsors 

seemed to have had a great time, and 

Mike Puzey has managed to have found 

the right formula and introduced the 

first event for a long time which is as 

exciting as the old speedway and hotrod 

meetings so many of us enjoyed 

growing up in Johannesburg…

WOMZA Inter-provincial 

Never did we imagine that the 

WOMZA North Vs South / 

Interprovincial could get any bigger, 

better, or attract in excess of 250 

entries. Well, we was pleasantly 

surprised yet again!! This has become 

a massive annual gathering of the South 

African MX fraternity, and has afforded 

so many regional and club riders a 

platform to display their talents and 

emerging skills, and challenge riders 

from around the country. 

Heart-warming about an event 

like this is the camaraderie 

and support amongst the 

riders and the teams. We 

witnessed a number of “acts 

of kindness” where riders lent 

bikes to fellow competitors to 

enable them to race, helped to 

fix bikes and lined the fences to 

cheer each other on! 

This year the event will be 

televised – getting MX out there 

and giving even more riders 

the exposure they deserve. 

The day started with a 

welcome, an address by the 

CoC Marius Reynders, followed 

by a short message and prayer 

from Donald Futter (Christian 

Bikers Association). We then 

launched into the action! 

The practice and qualification 

‘in one’ was easily understood 

by the riders and this set the 

stage for the intense racing we 

enjoyed throughout the day. 

What was so different from the 

usual racing was the fact that 

there were ‘races within races’ 

– this, due to the fact that 

most classes drew substantial 

numbers. In fact, the MX 3 

class had to be split up due 

to the fact that all the gates 

were full! This is something 

that has not been seen in SA 

motocross for many years! 

To see so many 50cc and 

65cc riders on the line is also 

really encouraging. This is 

an indication that WOMZA 

is achieving one of its core

Derek Peek, the commentator, kept the

the regions came out in their specifically 

designed Interprovincial race jerseys, 

looking so smart and very professional. 

Well done to the team managers and 

team captains. Your contribution added 

to the spirit and atmosphere on the day.

As for the competition, Gauteng, for a 

third year in a row, walked off with that 

coveted Interprovincial cup, and yes, the 

NORTH narrowly beat the South.
