Loma Prieta Fire and Rescue
Firefighter Mike Larson
Robert Morrish
This month’s featured firefighter is Mike
Larson, the department’s youngest member
at 21—at least until the new batch of
recruits ourrently attending the CalFire Basic
Firefighter Academy come on board.
A mountain resident for the past twelve
years, Mike explains his motivations for
joining the department: “I’ve had the best
time growing up here and wanted to give back
to the community. I had wanted for a long
time to be a firefighter and to help people,
and Loma Prieta Fire & Rescue is one-of-akind
and truly an inspirational place. It feels
great to be a part of a team and the feeling
you get when you help rescue someone is
priceless. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Mike graduated from the College of
the Siskiyous Fire Academy in 2009. His
long-term career goal is to become a fulltime
EMT/firefighter. In the meantime
he’s paying the bills by pursuing a career in
retail loss prevention. When not working
or volunteering, Mike likes to spend his
time snowboarding, jet skiing, hiking, and
traveling.
Mike’s favorite aspects of being a volunteer
firefighter include participating in training
drills, supporting the annual Loma Prieta
Fire and Rescue barbecue and, of course,
responding to calls. Since joining the
department in 2009, he has responded to over 100 calls. Mike relates his most memorable call as follows: “It was a vehicle accident on
Highway 17 — an SUV lost control, crashed into a hillside and flipped over. We responded and assisted Scotts Valley Fire. We extricated the
patients and got them transported. The entire call ran perfectly and I was stoked to be part of the team. It was raining hard that day and I
believe we ran eight or nine calls. I’ll never forget it.”
Mike cites the department camaraderie as a big reason why he enjoys being a member: “The firehouse is like a second home. I have always
looked up to Chief Alex Leman. He gave me a chance and taught me almost everything I know in the field. CalFire Captain Candy Leffler
was also a huge influence on me. She showed me the ropes and always went out of her way to help me. Also Kevin Tanaka, Nate D., Lance,
Robert, Kevin E., Jaci -- basically everyone involved with Loma Prieta Fire & Rescue made me feel welcome and helped me get acclimated.
The fire service is like a huge family, and it’s an honor to be a part of it.”
Les Niles
South Skyline Fire & Rescue is holding an
open house and traditional pancake breakfast
fund-raiser on Sunday, May 27, from 8 to
11 a.m. at the Saratoga-Summit Fire Station,
12900 Skyline Blvd. The fire station is
located about a half-mile north of Highway
us for a hearty breakfast, look over the fire
engines and our new water tender, and meet
the team. Breakfast is $5 for adults, $3 for
kids, with all proceeds going to support our
fire-and-rescue team.
The volunteers of South Skyline Fire &
Rescue respond to emergencies in the Santa
Cruz mountain community from the Las
Cumbres and Saratoga-Summit fire stations.
Our primary response area is along Highway
35, from Bear Creek Road north into San
Mateo County. New volunteers are always
welcome. The breakfast is a good way to
learn more about becoming a Santa Cruz
County volunteer firefighter, or to meet our
We’re here to celebrate community
MountainHood
Lani Christianson and Jenny Yamate
We live in a unique area where people
endure torrential rains, raging wind storms,
mud slides, power outages, and forest fires
for the privilege of living in relative privacy
surrounded by redwood trees, abundant
wildlife, and special people. Residents of
the Santa Cruz Mountains are independent,
band together to support each other when
needed, and view “Road Closed” signs as a
hint to proceed with caution.
We call it our Mountainhood. We are
dedicated to providing opportunities for
mountain residents to come together to
celebrate life in this wonderful community.
Our goal is to promote community by
offering social events for young and old tfor
evenings of fun.
Reminiscent of the tradition of “grange
hall dances,” our kick-off event will feature
fantastic rock ’n roll from the Joe Sharino
Band. We look forward to entertaining all
comers at the Loma Prieta Community Center
on Saturday, July 28. Tickets are $25 each,
or $65 per family up to four. Tickets can be
purchased at brownpapertickets.com. If you
want to know more, call us at 408-353-4527,
or visit our website: themountainhood@aol.
com. Grab your partner, gather the family,
or come by yourself to share a night with the
MountainHood.
We hope to offer other events for the
community, so we invite you to offer ideas
for future activities. Let’s celebrate our special
life in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Volunteer Caregiving Organizing Committee
Patricia Wood
Separately we can only do a few things, but together we can help our whole community.
This statement sums up the support that the Mountain Caregiving Organizing Committee
received from Christ Child Catholic Church. Whether we are speaking as individuals, local
groups, or congregations, we can do more together than we can do separately. That is the goal
and plan for our group.
Soon we will establish our non-profit status, enabling us to ask for donations and apply for
grants. This funding will help with publicity, needs assessment, and recruiting volunteers. We
hope to have some flyers or information cards available at the firefighters’ barbecue in June.
In our search for a name that describes our mission and is easy to remember, we ask for
suggestions. Some suggested ideas are Mountain Caregiving Group, Mountain Neighbors
Helping Neighbors, and Mountain Care Bears.
Join us at a meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 10:30 a.m., in Whitaker Hall at Skyland Church.
We will focus on our non-profit status and our name. Join this community-wide effort to
support seniors and others facing short-or long-term disability challenges.
We will also support community-building across generations. We are committed to connect
volunteers of all ages with those who need non-medical caregiving services. Our goal is to
provide neighborly services such as rides to medical care, occasional meals, friendly visiting,
minor repairs, possibly some limited pet walking or feeding. We will do these things across
county boundaries, on both sides of Highway 17, without regard to religious affiliation. You
can be a good neighbor. Someone needs what you have to share.
To learn more about building a volunteer caregiving group in our area, come to our next
meeting. For more information, call Patricia Wood at 408-316-2938, or email pwood10@
Shelby Glenn
Lyme Disease Fundraising
for Mountain Student Shelby Glenn
Gina Glenn and Kathleen Hart
Palazzi Salon is hosting a Lyme-disease
fund-raising-and-awareness cut-a-thon on
Sunday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in
Campbell, 274 East Campbell Avenue.
The event will raise the community’s
awareness of Lyme disease and money for
Shelby Glenn’s costly medical treatment
related to her on-going battle against the
disease. Mountain resident Shelby Glenn was
a thriving, athletic, and socially-active highschool
student who collapsed during waterpolo
practice at the beginning of her junior
year in 2008. Doctor after doctor could
not pinpoint the cause for her continuing
migraines, spasms, memory loss, and
confusion. After much research by Shelby
and her family she was finally diagnosed with
Lyme disease.
This disease is an infection caused by a
spirochete that humans can get from the bite
of an infected deer tick. Its symptoms mimic
many other diseases (fibromyalgia, multiple
sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and others).
It can affect any organ of the body, including
the brain and nervous system, muscles and
joints, and the heart.
There are differing opinions within the
medical community on the best way to treat
Lyme. Because of this, patients are left to
explore alternative treatments, doctors, and
medications. The treatments are expensive
and long-term.
Please join us in support of Shelby Glenn
in her fight against Lyme disease. Get your
hair cut or styled by one of Palazzi’s fabulous
stylists, or just come and bid on one of
our silent auction items. Donations will
be accepted throughout the event for the
Lyme Disease Association for research and
community outreach.
May is Lyme-disease Awareness month.
Join the Glenn family by spreading the word
to your family and friends about Lyme.
Surprising Facts about Lyme
• It’s a faster growing epidemic than AIDS
• It can cross the placenta in utero
• It doesn’t always give you a bulls-eye rash
• It might be possible to get it from
mosquitoes and spiders
• Most new victims of Lyme disease are
children
For more information or to donate directly
to the Glenn family, call Gina Glenn at 408-
Choosing between death and inconvenience
The Laurel Barrier
Neil Wiley
Caltrans has installed a temporary barrier on Highway 17 at Laurel Road to protect drivers
from oncoming traffic. Southbound drivers will be blocked from left turns on to Laurel Road.
According to Luis Mendez of the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission,
the notorious Laurel curve has been responsible for more accidents than any other section
of Highway 17 between Summit and Santa Cruz. Many people have told me about losing
traction at this curve during wet weather.
In March, when Gerard Wener lost control of his Nissan Altima and crossed over into
northbound traffic, he hit two cars and was killed. Caltrans had no choice but to take
emergency action. A temporary concrete barrier was installed. Caltrans plans an experimental
high-friction pavement treatment and has added a southbound curve warning sign. I watched
the sign one Sunday afternoon. More than fifty cars passed by. Not one had reduced their
speed to the legal forty miles per hour. Also, I found that exiting Laurel Road for a right turn
was scary, even in my sports car.
Preventing cross-overs is a necessity, but the barrier poses inconvenience and safety concerns
for Laurel-area residents. Although there are several places, south and northbound, to make a
left turn, any left turn across Highway 17 is dangerous. The overpasses at Granite Creek and
Summit Road are safer, but they seem a long way away, especially in an emergency.
The answer in an ideal world would be an underpass. This would help Laurel residents while
offering a needed passageway for wildlife blocked by Highway 17, especially mountain lions,
deer, and other wide-ranging animals.
In our less than ideal world, we can hope that high-friction pavement, and perhaps in the
future, a protected turn lane, will promise safety and convenience.
CSA Means Community-Supported Agriculture
Nancy Paduano
The unique micro-climate of the Santa Cruz Mountains is ideal for enjoyable, year-round
farming of a variety of interesting crops. Our groves of pomegranates, persimmons, kiwis,
citrus, and avocados produce mostly during the wet winter months, and our annual row
crops appreciate the extended spring, hot summer, and long fall seasons.
For a second year, Abounding Harvest Mountain Farm is operating a communitysupported
agriculture program. We offer the local community a “share” of our harvest in
the form of a weekly box of organic fruits and vegetables. We spent this winter opening up
new areas of the farm for cultivation of row crops, setting up a packing/storage room with a
walk-in cooler, growing seedlings in our greenhouse, and enriching our soil with a bell bean
cover crop.
We have expanded the depth and breadth of our offerings over last season. The twenty-week CSA will include market-variety fruits and
vegetables (e.g., lemons, mandarins, potatoes, onions, leeks, kale, chard, collards, spinach, salad mixes, peppers, tomatoes, squashes, peas,
broccoli, beans, cucumbers, corn, radishes, beets, basil, and herbs). We will offer more unusual vegetables such as Mizuna, Tatsoi, other
Asian greens, turnips, fennel, purple carrots, red garlic, poblano peppers, tomatillos, mesclun salad mix, arugula, butterhead and romaine
lettuce, fingerling potatoes, gold zucchini, red cabbage, celeriac, soybeans, melons, pomegranates, and lavender. Our tomato plants (over
twenty varieties of both heirloom and hybrid) are extremely large this year and ready to be planted as soon as the rains end and nighttime
temperatures rise. We already have many seeds and seedlings in the ground and continue to plant around the late rain.
Mountain Harvest CSA members receive produce that is locally grown, certified organic by CCOF, and harvested on the day of delivery.
We provide a convenient pick-up at the Summit Veterinary Hospital on either Tuesday or Friday. Visit MountainHarvestCSA.com for more
information, or to sign up. We look forward to growing for you this season.
may 2012 Celebrating life in the Santa Cruz Mountains
Mount Eden Hikes
Neil Wiley
After a surprisingly interesting hike on Saratoga’s Parker Ranch loop trail, I tried some other
Saratoga trails in the Mount Eden Road area near the Mountain Winery and Garrod Farms.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this exploration was searching for the trails. Even with a
map supplied by the city of Saratoga, finding a trailhead was difficult.
In fact, I never found the Pierce Road entrance or a place to park, so I drove on to Terralink
Way where I turned left, continued to Damon Lane, and then right to Mount Eden Road. At
the intersection, I found a small wooden post marked with hoof-and-foot symbols. I drove
right on Mount Eden until I found an open space off the road distinguished by a parked
car. I walked back to the intersection, and followed the roadside trail to the other end of the
Damon Lane loop, and then back to my car. It was not a particularly interesting jaunt.
My search continued with a drive up to River Oaks Road. A right turn on River Oaks took
me through a grand subdivision entrance. It would have been even more impressive but the
sign for Mt. Eden Estates was missing a few letters. The road, however, was wider, cleaner, and
better maintained than any I’ve seen in our part of the mountains.
The houses were even more imposing. These huge brown multi-million-dollar monster
homes are a salute to conspicuous consumption. I had discovered where the one-percenters
lived. Yet these giant homes were rather ugly. For some reason, expensive residential
architecture poses a severe challenge to architects. They mix many architectural styles, but
in trying to look different their appearance is similarly bad. Perhaps I’m jealous, but our
somewhat smaller mountain homes have more character and diversity.
Although I didn’t see any “no parking” signs, my guess was that deed restrictions might
prohibit on-street parking. I drove a short distance to the end of the road where my parked
car would be less conspicuous.
I walked back up the hill. On the right side of the road I found a small sign announcing
a trail. It circled behind the houses up to a ridge with some nice views of upscale suburbia.
Although I saw no signage the path was obvious and easy-to-follow. It wasn’t Yosemite, but
it provided a nice walk. The trail ended at Edencrest Lane. The safest and most nature-like
return from the end-of-trail would be backtracking, but in the interests of exploration, I
walked down Edencrest to Mt. Eden, turned left to Villa Oaks Road, and another left through
the grand entrance and back to my car. Although I didn’t look like a resident, I blended
well with the many gardeners and contractors who provided the human landscape. The total
distance for this walk was a little more than a mile.
To extend my explorations, I walked past the closed gate and down the abandoned road past
Vaquero Court to Pierce, and back again. A woman walking her dog said hello. I looked a bit
rough, but when she saw my camera, she engaged me in a rather lengthy conversation about
mountain lions and other wildlife.
If you are interested in the Saratoga area, this is a pleasant tour, but if you want to experience
more nature nearby, you may be better off visiting local open-space preserves or walking in
your own mountain neighborhood.
Hikers and would-be hikers may enjoy a new non-fiction book called Wild written by Cheryl
Strayed. It’s the story of how a woman went from lost to found on the Pacific Crest Trail.
Loma Public Education Fund
Local Businesses help Schools
Julie Lane
LPEF President
The Loma Public Education Fund is very
thankful for community support. Two recent
events were sponsored by local businesses.
Last month, Loma Prieta Winery hosted
a “Sip-for-our-Schools” fund-raiser that
raised over $7,300. We thank Loma Prieta
Winery owners Amy and Paul Kemp (www.
lomaprietawinery.com), Bill the Oyster Man
(www.billtheoysterman.com), and Elizabeth
Moon Jewelry (www.elizabethlynnmoon.
com) for donating half of the weekend’s sales
revenue.
The Summit Market hosted a “Shop-forour-Schools”
fundraiser, their second of the
school year, and again donated ten percent of
the day’s revenue to our schools. Storeowners
Darrell and Karen Osborn support our
schools in many ways. They will once again
be a major sponsor of LPEF’s Annual Charity
Golf Tournament on May 18.
With even deeper budget cuts to education
projected for the 2012-13 school year,
and an increasing student population to
support, LPEF is working to achieve an
annual fundraising goal of $450,000. We can
accomplish this through successful events,
parent support, and community assistance. As
of April 15, more than one hundred district
families had contributed a total of more than
$100,000. Help us provide our community’s
children with a high-quality education.
Building Blocks Preschool
Happy Spring!
Karen Venegas
One of the most important components of our school is collaboration. We work together
to support learning for the children and adults in our school community. Adults work in
the classroom as an essential, integral part of the curriculum, supported by the Los Gatos/
Saratoga Recreation Department and our own teacher Karen.
Our students leave our program with new friends and the skills necessary to be successful in
kindergarten. They learn to follow directions, be a member of a group, get support from an
adult, re-group when upset, solve problems, and think for themselves. Our adults leave our
school with friends who support them, and share their joys and struggles, perhaps through
high school.
This month’s photo demonstrates class collaboration in action. Our Tuesday/Thursday class
(2.6 to 4 years old) collaged the sun, glued oh-so-many cotton balls to make the clouds, and
then spray-painted them black for rain clouds. They cut and glued petals to create a field of
spring flowers. Our Monday/Wednesday/Friday class (pre-K to 4 to 5 years old) painted the
rainbow, cut the blades of grass, painted gorgeous butterfly-prints, and then added snails,
other flowers, and our sweet daffodils.
We are about to post our class lists for fall 2012 and currently have a few spaces open for
next year. This is a perfect time to see if we are the school for you and your family. Our
programs and visiting hours run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We request that you make an
appointment. Our summer program will run from June 19 through August 9. In addition, we
are compiling a list for a possible Mommy-(or Daddy)-and Me class on an weekday afternoon
or Saturday, for children too young for our current classes. To schedule a visit or ask questions,
call us at 408-353-2847, or visit our website—www.buildingblockscoop.org.
Starry Night Auction
Alis Whitman
The theme of this year’s Lakeside auction is Starry Night, based on the painting by Vincent
Van Gogh. Every student at Lakeside submitted a piece of artwork. The results were fantastic.
The hallways at Lakeside are always covered with artwork, but the Starry Night projects
displayed were a sight beyond belief. We are proud of our students’ work, but we had to
choose one piece for the cover of the invitation.
The featured piece was by Jillian Bullen, fifth-grade. Runners up were first-grader Maeryn
Gull, and second-grader Quinlan Fafard.
We invite members of the mountain community to join us for a fabulous evening of dinner,
libations, and “fun-raising” to ensure that the children of Lakeside will continue to benefit
from enrichment programs. Our event will be held on Saturday, May 12, from 5 to 9 p.m.
at Las Cumbres Community Center, 18260 Las Cumbres Road. RSVP by May 4 at the
Lakeside School office. Cost is $25 per person if reserved, $30 at the door.
Lakeside Students Play in the “Superior” Rolling Hills Symphonic Band
Ralph Becker-Szendy
Lakeside Elementary students can attend grades 6 through 8 at Rolling Hills Middle School in Campbell. Many Lakeside students take
part in the band program at Rolling Hills under band director Mike Rawlinson. This spring, the Rolling Hills Symphonic Band visited
Disneyland, where they performed for the public and rehearsed with Disney staff musicians. On March 31, the Symphonic Band participated
in the California Music Educators Association Band Festival and competition, and received a ranking of “superior.” Lakeside students in the
Symphonic Band include Emmy Delaney (alto saxophone), Anders Rosenquist (trumpet), and John Becker (tuba).
Several students from the Rolling Hills Symphonic Band also took part in the Music Educators Association’s solo and ensemble festival at
San Jose State University. Two young musicians achieved the rare highest award, a “superior command performance”: Lindsey Wyant, from
the Campbell school district on trumpet, and John Becker from the Lakeside school district on tuba.
Construction Update
On April 10, the LGUSD board of trustees
voted not to pursue the additional geological
analysis required to rebuild Lexington on
its current site. They voted to move the
students indefinitely down to the Fisher
Middle School campus at the end of this
school year, where they will be housed in
a combination of portables and a newly
constructed building at the site.
The Friends of Lexington urge the
mountain community to help them
overturn these decisions as they impact not
only Lexington families, but also our entire
community. To learn more, please visit www.
