Erik Larson, international bestselling
author of In the Garden of Beasts and Devil
in the White City, will speak and sign his
books at the Los Gatos Library, 100 Villa
Ave., on Thursday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m.
This is a fund-raising event for Friends of
Los Gatos Library capital campaign. Leigh
Weimers, former columnist for the San Jose
Mercury News, will emcee.
Erik Larson is the author of six books,
including three New York Times bestsellers.
The Devil in the White City remained on
the Times’ hardcover and paperback lists for
a combined total of over three years. It won
an Edgar Award for nonfiction crime writing
and was a finalist for a National Book Award.
The option to make a movie of the book was
acquired by Leonardo DiCaprio. Film rights
to Erik’s most recent book, In the Garden of
Beasts, have been acquired by Tom Hanks.
Eighteen different publications included In
the Garden of Beasts on their lists of the top
books of 2011.

Schools” to benefit Los Gatos High School
on May 19 and 20. Fifty percent of all
wine sales will be donated to LGHS New
Millennium Foundation, benefiting Los
Gatos High School teacher grant requests.

South Skyline Firefighters
Pancake Breakfast
Les Niles
South Skyline Fire & Rescue is holding an
open house and traditional pancake breakfast
fund-raiser on Sunday, May 27, from 8 to
11 a.m. at the Saratoga-Summit Fire Station,
12900 Skyline Blvd. The fire station is
located about a half-mile north of Highway
9 on Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35). Join
us for a hearty breakfast, look over the fire
engines and our new water tender, and meet
the team. Breakfast is $5 for adults, $3 for
kids, with all proceeds going to support our
fire-and-rescue team.
The volunteers of South Skyline Fire &
Rescue respond to emergencies in the Santa
Cruz mountain community from the Las
Cumbres and Saratoga-Summit fire stations.
Our primary response area is along Highway
35, from Bear Creek Road north into San
Mateo County. New volunteers are always
welcome. The breakfast is a good way to
learn more about becoming a Santa Cruz
County volunteer firefighter, or to meet our

Our sixth annual Mother’s Day brunch is
scheduled for Sunday, May 13, from 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. There is one seating at 11 a.m.
Brunch includes a flower for mom, mimosas,
smoked salmon with mini-bagels, carved
prime rib, hunter-style chicken, baked-
salmon Provencale, eggs Benedict, bacon,
pancakes, an assortment of salads, fresh fruit,
desserts, and much more. After brunch, take
the opportunity to savor the special day by
touring our beautiful property.
The cost is $40 for adults and $25 for
children ages 5 to 12 years old. Seating is
family-style with tables of eight. Please bring

announces the LPCF summer movie series.
Mark your calendar for three Friday nights

17. The movies will be projected outdoors
at the Loma Prieta Redwood Amphitheater
across the road from the school. All your
favorites—popcorn, nachos, candy, hot dogs,

We live in a unique area where people
endure torrential rains, raging wind storms,
mud slides, power outages, and forest fires
for the privilege of living in relative privacy
surrounded by redwood trees, abundant
wildlife, and special people. Residents of
the Santa Cruz Mountains are independent,
band together to support each other when
needed, and view “Road Closed” signs as a
hint to proceed with caution.
We call it our Mountainhood. We are
dedicated to providing opportunities for
mountain residents to come together to
celebrate life in this wonderful community.
Our goal is to promote community by
offering social events for young and old tfor
evenings of fun.
Reminiscent of the tradition of “grange
hall dances,” our kick-off event will feature
fantastic rock ’n roll from the Joe Sharino
Band. We look forward to entertaining all
comers at the Loma Prieta Community Center
on Saturday, July 28. Tickets are $25 each,
