Volunteer Caregiving Organizing Committee
Patricia Wood
Separately we can only do a few things, but together we can help our whole community.
This statement sums up the support that the Mountain Caregiving Organizing Committee
received from Christ Child Catholic Church. Whether we are speaking as individuals, local
groups, or congregations, we can do more together than we can do separately. That is the goal
and plan for our group.
Soon we will establish our non-profit status, enabling us to ask for donations and apply for
grants. This funding will help with publicity, needs assessment, and recruiting volunteers. We
hope to have some flyers or information cards available at the firefighters’ barbecue in June.
In our search for a name that describes our mission and is easy to remember, we ask for
suggestions. Some suggested ideas are Mountain Caregiving Group, Mountain Neighbors
Helping Neighbors, and Mountain Care Bears.
Join us at a meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 10:30 a.m., in Whitaker Hall at Skyland Church.
We will focus on our non-profit status and our name. Join this community-wide effort to
support seniors and others facing short-or long-term disability challenges.
We will also support community-building across generations. We are committed to connect
volunteers of all ages with those who need non-medical caregiving services. Our goal is to
provide neighborly services such as rides to medical care, occasional meals, friendly visiting,
minor repairs, possibly some limited pet walking or feeding. We will do these things across
county boundaries, on both sides of Highway 17, without regard to religious affiliation. You
can be a good neighbor. Someone needs what you have to share.
meeting. For more information, call Patricia Wood at 408-316-2938, or email pwood10@
Shelby Glenn
Lyme Disease Fundraising
for Mountain Student Shelby Glenn
Gina Glenn and Kathleen Hart
Palazzi Salon is hosting a Lyme-disease
fund-raising-and-awareness cut-a-thon on
Sunday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in
Campbell, 274 East Campbell Avenue.
The event will raise the community’s
awareness of Lyme disease and money for
Shelby Glenn’s costly medical treatment
related to her on-going battle against the
disease. Mountain resident Shelby Glenn was
a thriving, athletic, and socially-active highschool
student who collapsed during waterpolo
practice at the beginning of her junior
year in 2008. Doctor after doctor could
not pinpoint the cause for her continuing
migraines, spasms, memory loss, and
confusion. After much research by Shelby
and her family she was finally diagnosed with
Lyme disease.
This disease is an infection caused by a
spirochete that humans can get from the bite
of an infected deer tick. Its symptoms mimic
many other diseases (fibromyalgia, multiple
sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and others).
It can affect any organ of the body, including
the brain and nervous system, muscles and
joints, and the heart.
There are differing opinions within the
medical community on the best way to treat
Lyme. Because of this, patients are left to
explore alternative treatments, doctors, and
medications. The treatments are expensive
and long-term.
Please join us in support of Shelby Glenn
in her fight against Lyme disease. Get your
hair cut or styled by one of Palazzi’s fabulous
stylists, or just come and bid on one of
our silent auction items. Donations will
be accepted throughout the event for the
Lyme Disease Association for research and
community outreach.
May is Lyme-disease Awareness month.
Join the Glenn family by spreading the word
to your family and friends about Lyme.
Surprising Facts about Lyme
• It’s a faster growing epidemic than AIDS
• It can cross the placenta in utero
• It doesn’t always give you a bulls-eye rash
• It might be possible to get it from
mosquitoes and spiders
• Most new victims of Lyme disease are
children
