Volunteer Caregiving Organizing Committee<br />

Separately we can only do a few things, but together we can help our whole community.<br />
This statement sums up the support that the <strong>Mountain</strong> Caregiving Organizing Committee<br />
received from Christ Child Catholic Church. Whether we are speaking as individuals, local<br />
groups, or congregations, we can do more together than we can do separately. That is the goal<br />
and plan for our group.<br />
Soon we will establish our non-profit status, enabling us to ask for donations and apply for<br />
grants. This funding will help with publicity, needs assessment, and recruiting volunteers. We<br />
hope to have some flyers or information cards available at the firefighters’ barbecue in June.<br />
In our search for a name that describes our mission and is easy to remember, we ask for<br />
suggestions. Some suggested ideas are <strong>Mountain</strong> Caregiving Group, <strong>Mountain</strong> Neighbors<br />
Helping Neighbors, and <strong>Mountain</strong> Care Bears.<br />
Join us at a meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 10:30 a.m., in Whitaker Hall at Skyland Church.<br />
We will focus on our non-profit status and our name. Join this community-wide effort to<br />
support seniors and others facing short-or long-term disability challenges.<br />
We will also support community-building across generations. We are committed to connect<br />
volunteers of all ages with those who need non-medical caregiving services. Our goal is to<br />
provide neighborly services such as rides to medical care, occasional meals, friendly visiting,<br />
minor repairs, possibly some limited pet walking or feeding. We will do these things across<br />
county boundaries, on both sides of Highway 17, without regard to religious affiliation. You<br />
can be a good neighbor. Someone needs what you have to share.<br />

Lyme Disease Fundraising<br />
for <strong>Mountain</strong> Student Shelby Glenn<br />

Palazzi Salon is hosting a Lyme-disease<br />
fund-raising-and-awareness cut-a-thon on<br />
Sunday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in<br />
Campbell, 274 East Campbell Avenue.<br />
The event will raise the community’s<br />
awareness of Lyme disease and money for<br />
Shelby Glenn’s costly medical treatment<br />
related to her on-going battle against the<br />
disease. <strong>Mountain</strong> resident Shelby Glenn was<br />
a thriving, athletic, and socially-active highschool<br />
student who collapsed during waterpolo<br />
practice at the beginning of her junior<br />
year in 2008. Doctor after doctor could<br />
not pinpoint the cause for her continuing<br />
migraines, spasms, memory loss, and<br />
confusion. After much research by Shelby<br />
and her family she was finally diagnosed with<br />
Lyme disease.<br />
This disease is an infection caused by a<br />
spirochete that humans can get from the bite<br />
of an infected deer tick. Its symptoms mimic<br />
many other diseases (fibromyalgia, multiple<br />
sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and others).<br />
It can affect any organ of the body, including<br />
the brain and nervous system, muscles and<br />
joints, and the heart.<br />
There are differing opinions within the<br />
medical community on the best way to treat<br />
Lyme. Because of this, patients are left to<br />
explore alternative treatments, doctors, and<br />
medications. The treatments are expensive<br />
and long-term.<br />
Please join us in support of Shelby Glenn<br />
in her fight against Lyme disease. Get your<br />
hair cut or styled by one of Palazzi’s fabulous<br />
stylists, or just come and bid on one of<br />
our silent auction items. Donations will<br />
be accepted throughout the event for the<br />
Lyme Disease Association for research and<br />
community outreach.<br />
