natural world over the new industrial one. The artists
used this point of view to make focus on how we are
going to lose the mountains and meadows, and replace
them with factories and industry. William Blake, John
Constable, and JMW Turner were important painters
during this movement.
Impressionism was a very short, but very
influential historical art period. It began in France,
lasting less than 30 years during the 1800s. Its own
unique technique was that Impressionist painters
broke the "proper" rules of the artists before them.
Instead of taking months to finish one painting, they
would use quick brush stroke to capture an impression
of the object. These artists were known for trying to
"capture the light" by using different shades of colors
to spread the light across the painting. This has been
highly influential in the art that we use today. Enough
of the boring stuff, let’s move on!
Art Now
Nowadays, art mostly consists of colored pencils,
fancy ink pens, pastels, chalk, and oil paints for the
beginners at home (I am a beginner). I am also a big
fan of colored pencils! The 24 pack of Crayola colored
pencils I got during the back-to-school sale for $3.00
has been a huge help for my artistic moments. I find
that I am able to shade as much as I wish, darken, and
even do some pretty professional looking things!
I am always eager to learn new things, so when
a friend brought up sidewalk chalk art, I gave it a go. At
first—well, I practically flunked at it. But, I was
encouraged to let my creative juices flow and do
anything my hands willed. Before I knew it, a colorful
and abstract picture evolved. It wasn't amazing, but
the time spent relaxing was priceless (drawing can be
such a stress reliever). The chalk that we used was just
normal, everyday, childhood chalk, but it worked well
enough! I would recommend getting a box with at least
24 pieces since you can have more shades of colors
that way.
PaperMate FLAIR pens (size medium), which
were really awesome. Amanda recommended
them to me—she is really artsy! Hand lettering is
really nice because the supplies aren't expensive,
and it is fairly freestyle when it comes down to
the drawing. And, if you need inspiration,
Pinterest is the place to go!
Art really isn't confined to just
drawing and painting though. Being
artistic could mean writing music or poetry,
which also has many genres. You really can't hold
a person back when it comes to their God-given
talent. He is the everlasting creative one—His
amazingness will never cease!
"I consider Your heavens, the work of Your
Fingers, the moon and the stars, which you
have ordained." Psalm 8:3
"O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your
name in all the earth."
Psalm 8:9
Anything and everything we do should give glory
to God, the One who gave us the beauty that
inspires us all. So, now you've got some fun facts
about the history of art and some cool techniques
to try out!

Enjoy fall while it lasts! It’s only three months long.
The crunchy leaves, sweater weather, yummy hot
drinks, pungent bonfires, spicy smells, cozy book
nooks, and more make fall one of the best months.

topics) and then Rachel checked her phone. In
the middle of Korbyn’s narrative, Rachel
shrieked, “You won the playwriting contest!”
Let me explain the playwriting contest. Writers
arrive on campus for prompts at one on
Monday and have until noon the next day to
write a coherent play out of the tangle of
prompts.
Amid these prompts were character
brainstorming exercises (my characters
ended up being based on Victor Frankenstein,
Audrey Hepburn, my sister Rachel, my
grammar teacher, and my best friend Julia
Ryan), as well as a few lines such as “you can’t
change something like that—it changes you”
and “GO! Go now!” My play also had to contain
certain items like a formal ritual being
interrupted, someone’s status changing, and
someone has to reveal a secret they’re ashamed
of. Additionally, I had to someone intertwine a
rake, a desk, and a safari hat in my plot.
Quite a task, eh?
I wrote a majority of my play during a
performance BJU actually put on. It was a
startling mystery written by Agatha Christie . . .
perhaps that’s why my drama contained a
murder?
I literally sent my work in five minutes before
noon the next day. I was writing like a
madwoman and I only edited once before
sending my piece in. Honestly, I hated it and
didn’t think it had even the slightest chance of
winning.
Let’s fast-forward to Tuesday night in the dorm
room with the girls.
I was stunned to silence when Rachel
I wrote every single word, and here it was, being
performed right in front of me.
Everyone loved my sense of humor, which so very
rarely leaves my brain and pops out of my mouth.
That’s probably a good thing, but never think I’m just
standing there listening to you talk. I’m constantly
thinking—constantly in motion.
Guys, I hope you all have a life moment like I had
right there. I felt like a true writer, and the giddiness
in my soul is really indescribable. I hope I never
forget those few moments, and I can continue
writing and receiving joy from this thing I love the
most.
