Christian Characteristic:
Obedience
Written by Amanda
Obedience is the very best way to show that you believe, just
as that familiar song says. Obeying shows that you have a
submissive spirit.
But when we think of obeying, the picture that comes to mind
is doing something when you are told. Well, that is the main
idea, but there are three steps to obedience. Let’s take a look
at each of these steps:
1. Obedience needs to be immediate. When your mom says
to clean your room, is it obedience to decide that you will do it
later? No. If your grandparent asks you to go get the mail for
them, is it obedience to tell them that you’ll get it after you’ve
finished painting your nails? Not a chance. Obedience is
being told to do something and doing it immediately.
2. Obedience needs to be cheerful. I know by experience that
obeying cheerfully is hard. It always is, especially if you are
being told to do something that you don’t want to do. The
easy thing to do is throw a fit or roll your eyes. But this is
definitely not obedience, and it is being disrespectful to your
parents!
3. Obedience needs to be complete. If you are told to wash
the dishes and you stop halfway through to watch a movie,
that is not obedience. If you are told to practice the piano but
you only do half of your assigned time, then that is not
obedience either. Not only will this not be obedience, but also
the next time you want to go to your friend’s birthday party,
your parents won’t think you are responsible enough.
Bonus Points! Let’s say a parent tells you to turn off the light
in your bedroom before you leave for soccer. You run to your
bedroom, turn the light off, and turn to go outside to the car.
But you notice that your brothers left their bedroom lights on,
and they also didn’t turn off the light in the bathroom.
Ah well, boys will be boys! So you go and turn their
lights off and the bathroom lights off as well. This is
showing initiative. You thought how expensive
electricity is, and why waste it if no one is going to be
home? Bonus points! But here’s the trick: if you run
out to the car and boast about how great you are and
how you showed initiative, then that nullifies the whole
thing! God knows what you did, and he will reward you
later.
Verse: Ephesians 6:1-3, “Children, obey your parents in
the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and
mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long
on the earth.”
Song: “Obedience”
Characters who showed obedience: Noah and
Abraham
What would you do if someone came up to you and
told you to build a house made of water because it was
going to rain fire? Your reaction might be the same as
Noah’s reaction was when God told him to build an ark
because it was going to rain. It had never rained before,
and the thought of water falling from the sky sounded
as far-fetched as raining fire. Nonetheless, Noah
believed God and obeyed immediately. He also obeyed
completely; God gave Noah specific orders on what to
build the ark from (gopher wood) and how big to make
the ark. Noah followed God’s instructions exactly.
Then two of every animal on earth (except perhaps
aquatic animals; they would be right at home in the
massive flood) made their way into the ark and stayed
there for forty days and forty nights while the flood
raged its fury on the earth.
Today we still see evidence that the Flood really did
occur. Continued on next page.
F UN THINGS TO DO
Volume 3, Issue 1

The Grand Canyon is one famous example, but every mountain
in the world is also a witness of what happened less than six
thousand years ago.
Abraham is another good example of obeying. I don’t know
about you, but if somebody said to sell everything that I own
(save a couple loose objects) and head for an unknown land, I
would say, “Er . . .”. Well, God told Abraham to sell
everything that he owned, get rid of his workers and animals,
and head to the land of Er (now you see my joke). Abraham, in
faith, trusted God and obeyed Him. Therefore, God blessed
him.
We can be inspired by these godly people in the Bible who
demonstrated good examples of obedience. Maybe the next
time someone tells you to do something; you will remember
these examples and obey immediately, cheerfully, and
completely.
Quiz:
What is Your Obedience Rate?
Written by Rachel
Note: Be honest with yourself! You won’t have to submit
any answers or tell anyone the results. This will just better
tell you what you might want to work on and pray about.
1. Your mom calls you to come downstairs and clean up
your baby brother’s mess, but you have only one page of
history left to read and a few questions to answer. You…
A. Run down the stairs after finishing your homework, with
a cheerful attitude, happy to be able to help your mom! You
clean up every last tiny car!
B. Run down the stairs immediately. You get all the toys,
but why did she choose you? It’s so unfair.
C. Finish reading the last paragraph, then walk downstairs.
You leave a lot of the cars on the floor and then say you
feel sick and run to the restroom. You still feel glad mom
chose you so that you won’t have to do school for a few
minutes!
2. You’re having a sleepover at your Grandma’s house, but
your brother is being really annoying. So you both start to
fight. Your Grandma comes in to the living room and
kindly tells you to stop and talk nice. You . . .
A. Realize your foolishness but don’t apologize until your
brother does. There is no further discussion.
B. Decide to say sorry immediately. Although it wasn’t you
who started it . . .
C. Decide to say sorry immediately. He starts fighting again
and you grumble and moan inside. You’re glad you obeyed
even though he’s still yelling.
3. You’re at your co-op (a program of study that allows
homeschool student to do extra-curricular subject with
other homeschoolers) and your art teacher tells you to
make sure all the little kids are outside doing PE with the
teacher. You love art, but you . . .
A. Happily run outside after listening to the art project
instructions. You check the list your art teacher gave you to
make sure all the kids are there. Lucy is not there so you go
find her and bring her back. You’re so happy your teacher
chose you to do such an important job!
B. Run outside as fast as you can. You see Lucy is missing
and go get her. Rats! You missed the instructions on how
to make the craft. Now you have to ask and be completely
embarrassed!
C. Run outside as fast as you can. You love running so
you’re happy to be able to run whenever you get a chance.
You glance at the sheet and tell the PE teacher Lucy’s not
there. You then dash back to the art tables before the PE
teacher can tell you to look for her.
A Stimulation of Plastic Rock
Submitted by Emily
Source: Exploring Creation with Physical Science (2 nd edition) by
Apologia
Lydia and I had so much fun doing this science experiment
a few weeks ago! It is supposed to behave like plastic rock,
which is what part of the inside of the earth is made from.
It flows like a liquid, but when subjected to abrupt pressure,
it solidifies.
Supplies:
A shallow pan (pie pan, for example)
Cornstarch
Measuring cups
Water
Spoon for stirring
Directions:
1. Put 1/2 cup of cornstarch into the pan.
2. Add 1/3 cup of water.
3. Stir the water an cornstarch together. You should find it
very hard to stir at first, but as you continue to stir, you
should get to the point where you have an evenly mixed,
white liquid in the pan.
4. Add 1/4 cup of cornstarch into the mixture. Now you
should start seeing an interesting behavior. As you stir, the
mixture should solidify, making it hard to stir. However,
when you stop stirring and let the mixture sit, it should
liquify again.
5. Pick up some of the mixture in your hand. As you pick it
up, it should become solid. Squeeze it into a ball, then relax
your hand and watch what happens (isn't it cool?).
6. Throw away the mixture after you are done with it, and
rinse out the pan with hot water.
Fuddruckers
Written by Emma
If you like hamburgers, Fuddruckers is the place to go!
They have multiple choices such as hamburgers, chicken,
and hotdogs.
They have a topping station so you can put ketchup, cheese,
lettuce, and pickles on your hamburger. Did I mention they
have fries? They are really, really good. If you get a kid’s
meal, you will get a token to get a free cookie at their
bakery.
I love Fuddruckers because they have good and wonderful
service.
flood!
“Kate”
Submitted by Amanda
What makes your life different than others? Possibly my
family. We are all very closely related. My dad and my uncle
are brothers and they married a pair of sisters, and therefore,
I have three double first cousins, one of whom is my best
friend, and we all have the same grandparents. It is hard to
explain . . . I even have one relative who is my aunt and my
cousin at the same time, and she has kids, so . . . yeah.
What do you want to be when you grow up: I am not
really sure. I keep going back and forth between a doctor
and a teacher.
Goals in life: To be a light for God no matter the situation,
and to be a responsible, hard worker.
My motto: As my siblings have heard me say many times:
“I’m sorry, but crying and moping won’t help, so get up and
move on with your life.”
First name: Rachel, but I prefer people to call me Kate.
Siblings: I have one sister named Carly and one brother named
Collier. They both drive me crazy, but I love them anyway.
Pets: In our house, we have three cats and two bunnies. The only
pet who belongs to me is Caspian, my white cat who has a nose for
trouble. He once got stuck on our roof! My parents disagree about
Caspian. Dad threatens to barbeque him, while mom tries to
convince everyone that Caspian really belongs to her instead of me.
Favorite colors: Green and purple
Favorite thing to do: One of my absolute favorite things to do is
hang out with my friends, anywhere and anytime.
Favorite animal: Cats. There’s no contest.
Favorite and least favorite subjects: Well, considering my mom
is a writing teacher, my favorite subject is writing. It has to be, or
she will throw me out the second story window! My least favorite
subject is math.
Favorite ice cream flavor: It’s a tie between chocolate chip cookie
dough and good old-fashioned strawberry.
Favorite soda: Dr. Pepper! Yummy!
Favorite car type: I don’t really care. As long as it runs, I’ll drive
it!
Would you rather live in the country or the city? I would rather
live in the country than the city. Country girl all the way!
Awards: I have won many awards in soccer, some medals for
speech, and a few for singing and voice.
Needles
Thread
Sharpie
Stuffing or fluff
Craft:
Felt Owl
Submitted by Emma
Directions:
1. Use a sharpie to draw an owl on the felt. Cut the owl that
you drew and trace the exact same thing again. Sew the two
together leaving enough space to put the stuffing and sew the
top.
2. Trace out wings for the owl using the second color of felt.
Once you have them traced, cut them out and sew them to the
owl. If you want to, you may trace and cut some more wings
out and put them on top of the wings you just sewed on.
3. Take the third piece of felt and make eyes and a beak. Trace
out two big circles and two tiny circles. The big circles need to
be white and the tiny circles can be whatever color you want
them to be. Cut them out and sew them on to the owl. Make
sure that the eyes don't fall off.
4. Trace a triangular shape and cut it out sew it to the owl. That
will be your beak.
*You may substitute sewing by using fabric or tacky glue.
Story:
Willy and Frank Meet a Hog
Written by Lydia
Willy and Frank bounded down the stairs, ready for a new
adventurous day.
“What are we supposed to do on this rainy day?” complained
Frank.
“Oh, come on, Frank, cheer up. I have the greatest idea this
earth can ever know!” cheered Willy.
“What's your idea?”
“Well, it's kind of a secret. I think it should be just between me
and Frank.”
“Boys, I think you should tell us,” said Papa.
“Yeah,” Mary tauntingly said.
“Mary,” Papa corrected, “Well, anyway tell us unless it is a deep
secret.”
“No, not exactly.”
“Tell us then.”
“I want to build a contraption of a sort.”
“Whoa! Where did you get that word?” asked Papa.
“Oh, from a kid at school. He said that his dad made them
when he was little.”
“Continue.”
“Well, we want to go to the junk yard and get all sorts of stuff.”
“Suits me,” Papa said.
“Excuse us,” Said Willy and Frank as they bounded out the
door, napkins flying.
“Thanks for breakfast,” They chimed and disappeared.

“Willy, how much longer do I have to carry this thing?”
inquired Frank.
“Not much longer. I think I can see some kind of house frame
here.”
As they were walking through the woods, they started hearing
funny noises. “I don't like those sounds,” Frank said frightfully.
“Me neither,” replied Willy.
“Look out!” Willy screamed, “It's a hog charging for me!”
Frank, who hated hogs most of all because of a bad experience
with one earlier in his life, bolted accidentally right in front of
Willy. Willy toppled over. Frank tripped over his foot,
dropped his “thing,” and launched full force over the “thing”
and landed head first into a mud pit on the other side of the
road.
Willy, on the other hand, had gotten up (with some scrapes and
bruises) just in time to see the hog run through the pile of stuff
from the junk yard (it had spilled) and trip and land right next
to Frank in the mud pit. Willy was scared that the hog was right
next to his twin brother in a mud pit that he just screamed as
best he could. Frank slowly stood up, unaware of the hog right
next to him. The next two things that happened stuck in both
of their minds for a lifetime. Frank, on seeing the animal, ran
and knocked right into Willy again. The hog, realizing his
predicament, squealed and ran around and around in circles
around them. With all the commotion the boys clung to each
other like it was their death sentence.
“We need to get this animal away,” said Willy.
“Okay, when he is out there, we will run for our lives,” replied
Frank.
“Go!”
The boys bolted and ran for the house. But to their frightful
disappointment the hog only followed them. “Run into the
smokehouse with the hog!”
“Okay, Willy!”
They ran into the smokehouse and the hog followed, of course.
“Now somehow we have to get out and the hog not.”
Willy jumped out with Frank at his heels. “Whew, that was a
close one,” replied Frank.
“Mama, Papa, Mary, come quick! I think we got some supper
tonight.”
In moments, Mary, Mama, and Papa were all at their sides.
“Now, how in the world did you get around to getting this
whopper?” said Papa, peering into the hog in the smokehouse.
“We can tell you at supper. It's a long one,” replied the boys in
synchronization.
“You boys better wash up,” said Mama.
“Can I ride it, Daddy?” asked Mary.
“No, honey, not this one.”
Later that evening the boys had a good supper and they told
their whole story with their parents ooh-ing and ahh-ing over
the whole thing - one adventure they would remember for a
lifetime.
