Filing of Patents and Registered Designs Documents by Post Anything sent to the Patent Office under UK patents and registered designs law 1 by posting in the United Kingdom is deemed to have been filed when it would have been delivered in the ordinary course of post. In practice, this has generally meant that patents and registered designs documents sent through the Royal Mail could, if delayed, be given a filing date before their actual date of receipt. Supporting evidence is called for in some cases before the earlier date is granted. Schedule 8 of the Postal Services Act 2000, which came into force on 26 March 2001, makes clear that the use of the terms “post”, “registered post”, “recorded delivery”, and “first class post” in legislation cannot be limited only to services provided by what it calls “the Post Office company”. As a result, the Patent Office now recognises as “post” any items delivered to it by any commercial service which undertakes to deliver mail in exchange for a fee. It follows that patents and registered designs documents sent by such commercial services can, if delayed, be deemed to have been filed before the actual date of receipt. UK Classification Key 1. Summary of changes effective from 1 January 2005. On 1 January 2005 certain parts of the Key were republished. These parts together with the un-amended parts of Edition W collectively constitute Edition X. All parts are now available at http://www.patent.gov.uk/patent/reference/ukc/index.htm. All changed headings, whether to reflect changes of substance or corrections of clerical errors have been republished completely. All pages of these headings carry the designation X as the first part of the code at the bottom left hand corner.

Indexes Used in this Journal The head notes to some of the indexes in this Journal include examples of entries appearing in the indexes. Where appropriate, component parts of the examples are preceded by a two-figure INID code (Internationally agreed Numbers for the Identification of bibliographic Data) and include two-letter country codes. The codes are those of standards ST9 and ST3 respectively of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and more details are given quarterly in this Journal in the first issues in January, April, July and October. Where an entry includes a name, then the entry is formatted according to standard ST20 of WIPO. Details of this standard are also given quarterly in the Journal in the first issues in January, April, July and October.
