Parades and fireworks, fiddlers
and folk songs; square dancing,
gold panning, eating, drinking and
sports galore will engulf Quesnel
this weekend as people don period
DISAPPOINTMENT
The most disappointing news of
Because of careless celebrations
on private property last year, access
to the Fraser River by the rafters has
Been denied by residents this year.
Organizers had hoped to find a
solution to the problem, but Friday
it was announced that, this year at
least, the race would not take place.
Organizers are still very much hop.;
next year.
Members of Quesnel's Downtown
Revitalization Committee visited
Vernon recently and returned home
with the idea "to go with what
you've got and beautify it."
Committee members Ron Silver
and Alec LeBrun attended a
Downtown Revitalization workshop
in Vernon, and last Wednesday
Silver gave a report to the Quesnel
District Chamber of Commerce.
The strongest idea coming out of
the Vernon workshop, Silver said,
was that communities interested in
improving downtown sections
should not seek a specific theme or
concept.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs
is sponsoring the Downtown
Revitalization Program whereby
funds are available to communities
to upgrade downtown cores.
In his report to QDCC directors,
Silver said "all they're advocating is
to go with what you've got
(downtown) and beautify it" rather
than decide on a common theme,
such as a Western concept.
The Chinook salmon population
, in area streams will be boosted when
a federal fisheries hatchery presently
under construction near Likely
^ reaches its full capacity,
Adrian Rowland, project
engineer, said in a telephone interview
July 9 the hatchery, which will
cost $2'/2 million, is scheduled to
begin operations in August.
Maximum production from the
hatchery, totalling 63,000 chinook
annually, is not expected for about
five years when there will be seven
permanent employees at the hatchery.
The construction schedule to meet
the August deadline is very tight,
said Rowland.
The goal of the hatchery is to increase
the supply of chinook salmon
available for native food and sport
fishing, said Rowland.
The hatchery site, which is about
two kilometers west of Likely, was
chosen because of the good surface
and ground water supplies, said
Rowland.
The use of ground water for the
young fish habitat is important
because it prevents the fish from being
contaminated by any disease
present in the Quesnel River, the
surface water supply.
Any contamination could be
spread to other rivers once the fish
are released. Fish eggs are collected
from a stream and the fish which are
hatched from these eggs are returned
to the same stream.
The young fish, called fry, which
are released into the streams weigh
between two and five grams, said
Rowland.
QDCC directors were shown
slides of downtown revitalization
projects undertaken in Vernon,
Kamloops, Armstrong and Salmon
Arm.
Silver pointed out that Vernon's
project included brick sidewalks, ornamental"
lighting, trees and benches.
From the workshop Silver said it
was "strongly advocated" that
communities concentrate on restoring
a section and at the same time
emphasizing the character of that
designated area.
Quesnel city council have
designated the downtown section
that is to be upgraded, according to
Mayor Mike Pearce, who attends
QDCC meetings as council's
representative.
Silver said the provincial government
will finance a community's
downtown revitalization "so long as
a city determines the area to be improved."
Once an area is designated, he
said, the government provides
$5,000 grants for the hiring of a project
consultant. Following this,
$10,000 loans are available for the
drawing of a project's working
plans.
Then "at a fairly reasonable interest
rate, payable over 20 years,"
loans of up to $350,000 are available
for downtown projects. Silver said.
After the chamber meeting. Silver
added that the city has not hired a
consultant yet. The committee is
•"trying to come up with a design
concept", which Silver stressed
would not be a specific theme, such
as the Western theme.
A completion date for Quesnel's
downtown revitalization is not set,
and Silver pointed out that it could
take a few years before the project
winds up.
"It's better to go slow on a project
of this size," rather than quickly
and making expensive mistakes,
he added. •
The program's co-ordinator,
Peter Dueck, is due in Quesnel on
July 21. Dueck will be making a
presentation of the program to
QDCC members and downtown
merchants.
In his report to chamber directors
last Wednesday, Silver said: "The
whole idea is not to create a common
theme. It's to create a nice,
beautiful area."
"The most difficult thing right
now is getting the merchants interested."
"For those who have traveled to
areas that have done some fixing
up," Silver said, "you can see quite
a difference."
ticipating traffic problems,
Vatamaniuk replied, "We have
many."
How does the constabulary intend
to handle them?
"The same way we do every
year...people will dodge around
each other and in and out of parking
stalls. They'll park wherever they
can find a spot.
"We'll survive, the way we
always dp," he concluded.
Several new events are taking
place this year, including the ping
pong ball drop from the Toronto
Dominion Bank and Pearl's
Fashions on Reid Street Thursday
morning.
Each ball will have a number on it
Forest industry contract talks in
Forest Products and Garner
operations, Everitt said - but
for how long is not known.
Quesnel Forest Products have applied
for a provincial mediator in an
attempt to forestall a strike.
Everitt added the IWA's provincial
negotiating team has yet to meet
with these three companies.
Meetings with these companies
should occur late this week or early
next week, he said.
The mediator requested by
Quesnel Forest Products has 10 days
to hear both sides. "He listens to
both sides, but his final report is not
binding," Everitt said.
Asked if pickets set up at the
these three companies, Everitt said:
"There's always that chance. We
hope it doesn't happen."
"The caucus has recommended
said.
The pulp and paper manufacturing
companies last week offered the
CPU a two-year contract with wage
increases of 14 percent in the first
year and 12 percent in the second.
In a counter offer the CPU
CPU longshoremen; and the right to
bank overtime for all workers after
eight hours.
Industry negotiators rejected this
CPU counter-offer.
Huhn said: "All local votes have
to be into Vancouver by 4:30 Thursday.
Then Art Gruntman (CPU
regional vice-president) will convey
to the manufacturers the results."
"If it's a total rejection," Huhn
continued, "then Monday, July 20,
Quesnel's airport will be closed 3-6
Power boats are once again
The B.C. Ministry of
Lands, Parks and Housing
had received recently an application
by residents to place
a boating restriction on Puntataenkut
(Tibbies) Lake.
In an memo, Ken Stewart,
the ministry's boating program
co-ordinator, said:
"Please be advised that this
office has now completed anv
investigation into this application."
"As a result, it is now evident
that thereVis very little
support for such a restriction
on Tibbies Lake."
"Accordingly, we do not
feel that there is a need to impose
any boating restriction on
this lake at the present time."
Vancouver, Heed said tenders for
the runway repair project currently
are being received. Tenders are due
on Jtjly 23, he said.
Transport Canada has an
estimated project cost, but "we'll
See SKETCH
page 15
find out what it'll cost and award a
contract at that time (July 23)," he
said.
If only one bid comes in for the
project, he added, then the Treasury
Board in Ottawa will have to be approached
"for authority to enter into
a contract with the sole bidder."
This could cause a delay in the
project, he said.
Bids exceeding the estimated project
cost (between $317,400 and
$350,000 according to Quesnel airport
manager Joe Regts) also could
delay the project.
Heed said: "If it comes in grossly
high, we'd be delayed again. We'd
have to go to the Treasury Board for
additional funding authority."
Any substantial delays in the project
could result in it being deferred
until next year, he added.

Only eggs from
Chinook salmon will be
brought to the hatchery,
said Rowland.
The hatchery will be the
only one in the Upper
Fraser region dedicated
to Chinook.
The reason for the
exclusive hatchery is to
ensure the enhancement
of salmon stocks
is distributed equally
among the different
species.
A particular species
could could be seriously
depleted if the
enhancement program
is not done evenly.
Fishing limits for a
species with a hatcheryenhanced
population
would increase, said
Rowland.
However, members
of the species relying on
natural growth would
probably be caught
along with the hatchery
fish.
The population of
fish growing by
themselves would drop
while nothing was done
to increase their
numbers.
A fish hatchery can
increase the survival
rate of fish by a factor
of 10, said Rowland.
This means if in the
wild, a total of 10 eggs
successfully hatched, a
total of 1,000 would be
hatched in a hatchery.
A hatchery fish is
also a healthier and
stronger fish because it
was raised in a controlled
environment, said
Rowland, meaning a
better survival rate for
the fish once released.
An end to the
government agent office's
noon-hour closings
did not materialize
Friday but officials
hope for some resolution
as soon as possible.
Government agent
Ron . Campbell, who
manages the office, had
told the Observer July 3
a job vacancy might
have been filled by last
Friday.
But deputy government
agent Martin
Leith said July 10 the
vacancy had not been
filled and the situation
at the office remained
the same.
Leith is managing the
office until Wednesday
as Campbell was called
away for several days.
The available manpower
is reviewed every
day, said Leith, and the
decision to close during
from 12 p. m. to 1 p.
m. is decided on the
basis of how many people
will be on the job
that day.
The number of staff
available is so tight that
if one person calls in
sick the closing is
Local
unavoidable,, said
Leith.
The staff-shortage
pressure on government
offices
throughout the province
was being studied
last week. A servicetime
survey was conducted
on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday.
Ken Weir, the
regional government
agent in Prince George,
said last week the
survey was intended to
show other government
officials the problems
being experienced by
the offices serving the
public.
Leith, who had seen
some of the suryey
results from Monday
and Wednesday, said
the results did not indicate
service times
were as bad as had been
thought.
However, there were
some service times
which matched the long
waits which had bieen
predicted, said Leith.
He said more complete
results of the
survey might be
available during the
week of July 13.
FOOD
FOR
THOUGHT
A, brickbat to
the Quesnel
restaurant, which
shall remain unnamed,
but which
last week served
some luncheon
diners food that,
shall we say, was
a little too salty
for the palate.
The diners had
a few spoonfuls,
smiled at one
another, dropping
an occasional
polite comment
about the abnormal
condition of
iheir food while
bravely enduring
the meal.
However, the
food got the best
of them as, after a
couple of
mouthfuls, the
diners had to give
up.
Finishing their
coffees, which
constituted their
main course, as it
turned out, they
were presented
with the bill. One
of the two diners
went to the entrance
to the kitchen
area and
told the cook on
duty that the meal
was simply too
salty for consumption.
The cook, who
also doubled as
waitress for the
two patrons served
that noonhour,
was very
apologetic.
However, the
two patrons were
still charged the
full amount of the
menu price for
two meals that
were inedible.
That's neither a
good practice for
any business, nor
is it the Cariboo
hospitality that
nearly all food
outlets are practicing.
The management
of that particular
restaurant
knows of the incident,
and also
knows it has not
yet made good to
those patrons,
who are, or were,
steady customers.
For the record,
no deal was
made, says CQ's
Myles Green, between
the station
and the city in
publicizing the
Terry Fox service
in cLeBourdais
Park earlier this
month.
Apparently, the
confusion arose
when city hall
originally approached
CQ to
run ads worth
about $200 for
the service, but
rather than have
the station bill the
city, deputy clerk
Ron Paull suggested
the city
donate the
equivalent
amount to the
Terry Fox Cancer
Fund.
In the final,
. usually dramatic
moments of council
deliberations
of last week's city
council meeting,
it was agreed that
the city donate
the $200 to the
fund, and that
CQ would run the
free blurbs
without any strings
attached.
Says Green: "It
the only hope for anybody
putting enough pressure on
the Liberals to solve the Post
Office labour dispute and all
the national economic hardships
that such a dispute
foments.
The government is eager to
recess Parliament when a national
crisis is ongoing, when
businesses reliant on the
orderly flow of mail for their
cash flow arc reeling, when
ordinary citizens face possible
layoffs due to ripples in the
economy of most companies.
The government's attitude
is a most irresponsible one,
with the entire nation holding
the (empty) bag, and government
MPs setting their sights
on their lakefront hideaways.
Just when is the government
in Ottawa going to
represent the best interests of
this nation, anyway? If the
present situation isn't a crisis,
what is?
Hitchhiking has become
dangerous (in some places
even illegal) for driver and
rider alike, largely because of
outrageous crimes committed
by a very small proportion.
Doubtless, there are hundreds
of examples — most of
our liquor laws are designed
to curtail the extremes of a
small minority, often to the
inconvenience of the responsible
majority.
But must we sit back and
allow this paltry band of
rowdies to ruin our raft race?
Certainly, residents cannot
be blamed for choosing to
Summer and vacation, the words
are inseparable. If there is a summer,
which until recently was not a
certainty for this bit of the Cariboo,
you have a vacation.
I will be participating in several
get-away-from-it-alls this season.
The stumbling block to complete
relaxation comes with the
knowledge that relatives are descending
on the homestead.
Instead of taking a vacation in the
summer sun, I will be acting a.s'
guide and host for about a month
and a half. The assault will hit the
beaches in three waves starting in
about two weeks.
The timing was very well planned.
The commander of the operation,
whoever that may be, gives Alexander
the Great the appearance of a
Sunday driver.
Considering the precision timing
and intricate planning involved, I
suspect spies are in my camp. As it is
a small camp, I have a feeling the
spy is near and not so dear to me
anymore.
It would seem I am a harsh person.
I have spirited myself and my
wife away from the family
homeland with no more than an occasional
mailed reminder we are still
alive.
Our home, southwestern Ontario,
is a land where nearly every glance is
meet by the beautiful sight of a high
rise in the misty glare of four lanes
of hot asphalt.
Separated, just in the physical
and not political sense, from the
eastern families in our western setting,
it would appear only a crinch
would think summer visits would
not be incredibly happy events.
I am not a crinch, just a realist.
The reality is that reunions are happy
events but only when attendance
is brief and the gatherings are
separated by long periods of fond
memories.
The gruesome realities begin with
the basics like does everybody sleep
in the one borrowed bed. The lineup
for the limited supply of hot water is
another frightening feature.
Once numbers have been picked
from the hat for beds and hot water,
the business of entertainment arises.
A proper host would arrange to be
available 24 hours a day for the
duration of a family visit.
However, usually employers are
slow to realize that family visits
qualify you for six weeks of
emergency leave.
So when I realize there is no place
for me at the breakfast table and I
rush to work seeking peace and
tranquility, the guests will be left to
fend for themselves.
They understand you have to
work and they certainly say they can
manage by themselves. Manage to
just drop by and see what you have
planned for lunch and manage to
make short phone calls.
Of course, I will completely agree
it is no bother to rocket from the
work place and have supper in
Prince George. After all, it stays
light until late in the evening.
After the late evening the day-off
can start early for everyone and yes,
it is a very nice trip to Barkerville.
By the end of the family-tourist
season, I should be able to confidently
walk backwards through
the historic site.
Apparently, other people in the
city have experienced the problem
of being the family expert on
Barkerville. One resident told me
that during one summer he made
eight trips to see Barkerville's
Theatre Royal show.
As much fun as endless car trips
to one place or another can be,
every one of the vacations must
come to an end. Perhaps the
farewells are the most dangerous
part of the experience.
The final goodbyes having been
said, 1 have a fear that one more
parting comment will pass my lips.
The fear is useless because it seems
nothing can stop these last words.
The last words the departing
relatives will hear from me are come
back again...soon.
By Robert Skoglund
Several days after I'd reported my
income for 1980, the IRS asked me
to visit the local office for an audit.
Before going to town I dressed in
my least ragged overalls and put on
my best patched boots in hopes of
making a good impression.
Stepping into an IRS office for
the first time is an adventure. Some
claim the stomach sensations approximate
those youngsters get the
first two or three times they step up
to the altar to get married. I felt like
I'd just discovered a puddle of oil
• beneath my car.
Way over in a dark corner, three
clerks were operating a huge press
that was probably extracting blood
from turnips. Several people were
crying softly and the floor was littered
with damp Kleenex.
When I introduced myself to a
man behind one of the desks he
looked me up and down, offered me
a fresh Kleenex, and went to look
for my folder. I noticed a little sign
on his desk that said "Abandon
Hope All Ye Who Enter,Here."
"Mr. Skoglund," he began as he
returned to his desk. "You report
an income of only $200 for 1980. I'd
like to know how you managed to
survive."
"Things are cheap down where I
live," 1 replied. "I had a two-pound
steak last night. Got it for a 1946
dime. A 1963 dime buys five gallons
of gas. It's advertised right on the
front of the pumps."
"But how did you pay your
telephone and electric bills?"
"Oh, my neighbour pays mine. I
give him four old quarters every
month and he takes care of it for
me."
/f rOU UJf^ort THt QooK
i BELIEVE IT.
The IRS man thought about that
for a while. "Why not?" he said,
half to himself. "I've worked here
for. 26 years and no one has told me
a wrongie yet — but where did you
get those old dimes and quarters?"
"I worked for them," I said. "1
get 40 cents an hour for cutting horrid
ugly bushes with the brushhog
on my big tractor. Payable in
pre-1964 silvrr coins, of course.
And everyone- down home has an
old sock or a coffee can full of
them. Paper money is worthless.
Nobody will take it any more — except
you folks here at the IRS."
Several people who had
overheard our conversation started
to cry a little louder.
"You had me fooled, Mr.
Skoglund," said my IRS friend as
he stood up and extended his hand.
"I mean about how you could live
on $200 a year. Frankly, when 1 saw
the way you were dressed when you
walked in here, I thought I'd
already figured out how you did it."
manager, expects
final reading of the
mall developer's rezoning
application to be
done by city council
during the July 20
meeting.
The mall's construction
is to begin Aug.
20. The completion is
scheduled for
September 1982, said ,
Gook.
Those who believe
the mall will have a
negative impact on the
retail business in the city
are just looking at
the short-term, said
Gook. ^
Gook said the
developers are determined
not to glut the
retail-space market. He
said the competition
for tenants and
customers will be with
Maple Park Mall, not
downtown businesses.
The competition between
the malls will be
based on which mall
can provide better service
to customers and a
better environment for
them to shop in, said
Gook.
It is possible that
some local businesses
will decide to relocate
in the mall, said Gook.
He said there has been
much interest expressed
in the mall by local
merchants.
However, Gook considers
merchants from
Local 'merchants
could also mean
downtown merchants.
However, ' Gook said;
vacancies left by
downtown merchants
will be filled by other
The demand for
downtown retail space
will not make development
practical for
several years, said the
spokesman.
Relocations to the
new mall will create
openings downtown.
The spokesman said it
will be several years,
JUESNEL CARIBOO OBSERVER, TUESDAY, JULY 14, 1981
WESTERN ART - Lynn Speer, of Kersley, holds one of her western paintings. Speer and about 25
other artists and craftspeople participated in the recent Springhouse Trails Art Show in Williams
Lalce.
W e s t e r n a r t s u i t s L y n n
"What a beautiful
place for an art show!"
said Lynn Speer.
Two Quesnel artists
recently attended the
Springhouse Trails art
show near Williams
Lake.
Fred Paulson and
Lynn Speer had their
work displayed in the
Springhouse restaurant
along with about 25
other artists and crafts
people from Prince
George, Vanderhoof,
Horsefly and Williams
Lake.
"The turn-out was
D r a g o n L a k e n e w s
good for the first show
and it was very interesting.
There was a
lot of variety and provided
good exposure,"
said Lynn Speer. "It is
a beautiful setting for
an art show."
Subsequent art
shows are planned for
Springhouse again in
November and every
six months thereafter.
Lynn works primarily
in pastel with a
western theme. Living
and working on a ranch
herself may account for
the ' feeling and action
she is able to capture in
the people and animals
she paints.
She started selling
paintingis only three
years ago although she
says she has been fiddling
all her life with
charcoal drawings and
pastels. She prefers the
blending quality of
pastel on canvas or a
coarse board.
Most recently Lynn
is experimenting with
water colours and
pastels with pleasing
results.
Some of her work
Covers for pots and
pans can be made with
aluminum foil. Just
mold a piece of foil
over the pot or pan
edges. This has an advantage
over a regular
cover in that you can
punch holes to let off
"Each painting takes
about 30-70 hours of
work depicting various
facets of western life,"
she says.
She is a self-taught
artist who has studied
from numerous books
at the library and says
she would like to study
western art from an artist
in that field. Lynn
says she likes to make
her paintings look real.
Her western paintings
have been printed
on 15-month calendars
and will be available in
Quesnel soon as well as
note-paper made up by
a local card firm showing
her work.
Lynn is hoping to
make western art
Christmas cards as well
but first she has orders
for three more portraits
before she can start on
her Christmas collection.
She and her husband,
Ted, and their
five children, run 200
head of mother cows
on a ranch south of
Kersley. She has done a
lot of riding and roping
and loves branding. A
roping school was held
at their ranch until two
years ago but says there
is not time for that
now.
The Speers try to
follow the rodeo circuit
as much as possible. Its
very much a part of
their life and it is vividly
reflected in her paintings.
Paulson, meanwhile,
has been accepted by
the Emily Carr school
of Art in Vancouver
where he will begin a
four year course.
MOOSE CALLING Quesnel is home to the grandchildren of Canada's
champion moose caller, Ethel Keast of Ontario. Here, from left, Marsha,
When British Columbia
vegetable growers
are in the market for a
soiar greenhouse,
Joseph Molnar hope
they look at the one
he's building.
Dr. Molnar says the
soiar greenhouse now
under construction at
Agriculture Canada's
Saanichton Research
and Plant Quararantine
Station near Sidney,
B.C., is the first of its
kind in North America.
And it has been designed
with commercial
growers in mind.
The design should
. appeal to growers
because it is economical
and easy to build. Dr.
Molnar says.
Dr. Molnar, the station
director, came up
with the idea, and Bio-
Research Engineering
from the University of
British Columbia in
Vancouver designed the
structure.
The structure, which
measures about 18
metres by 7 metres by 7
metres, will collect
sunlight on moveable
indoor collectors and
store the energy
beneath tlie floor in
rock storage areas.
Air will flow through with imports," Dr.
the spaces between Molnar expiams.
To assist in checking
heat consumption and
energy savings on a
square-metre basis, a
control house has been
constructed near the
new solar greenhouse.
golf-ball-sized rocks.
This one-metre-deep
area will be insulated
with black plastic and
styrofoam. Electric
fans near the floor will
circulate the warm air.
The greenhouse is expected
to be put into
use for research work
later this spring.
"Our goal is to find
out if this type of solar
greenhouse is
effective," Dr. Molnar
says. "We will measure
and monitor the savings."
Dr. Molnar believes
the quality of Canadian
greenhouse produce is
much better than imported
farm produce.
He says B.C. growers
could produce a lot
more vegetables in
greenhouses if heating
costs could be reduced.
At present, the
greenhouse vegetable
industry in B.C. is
worth about S5 million
annually.
"Solar heating
should reduce
operating expenses and
make greenhouse
vegetable production
more cost-competitive
"Our eventual plan
is to put up a i-ocf
which will connect the
solar greenhouse to the
control house," Dr.
Molnar says.
"Since studies suggest
the solar house can
collect more energy
than it can use, we
should be able to supplement
the heat requirements
of the adjoining
greenhouses
from the solar house."
Construction of the
new research
greenhouse is being
financed by Agricultrue
Canada and the B.C.
Ministy of Agriculture
and Food. The total
cost of $160,000 includes
both the construction
cost and
engineering studies.
A similar solar
greenhouse would cost
a commercial grower
about $70,000, Molnar
estimates.
LONG SUMMER HOURS are put in by area farmers to cut hay after the
wet spring. Here, Kersley's Walter Edwards checks the hay cut with a
windrow-conditioner, which allows hay to dry more readily.
''Co —o p e r a t i v e with the private sector,
(non-profit) housing is provincial and
a flagrant waste of tax- municipal governpayers
money," says ments, an alternative to
HUDAC.
The British Columbia
Council of the
Housing and Urban
Development Association
of Canada feels
that the present method
of subsidizing the interest
on low-cost cooperative
housing to an
effective mortgage rate
of 2 per cent requires
urgent revision by the
federal government.
Given today's interest
rates, at least
$15,000 of every
51,000,000 of loan goes
into interest subsidy annually.
Without any further
savings that the private
sector could achieve on
constructions costs,
each $15,000 could
represent a $312.50 per
month direct rental
subsidy for 4 families
or $250 per month for 5
families.
The 3,000 units planned
for British Columbia
during 1981, assuming
an average provincial
cost per unit
of$75,000 (a typical
unit in Vancouver
could cost $99,500)
would total
$225,000,000. That
means in interest subsidies
alone, an allocation
of $33,750,000 will I
provide assistance for j
only 3,000 families. |
Using private sector |
builders and
developers, and a direct
income assistance to
families who require
financial help for accommodations,between
12,000 and 15,000 '
families could be hous- i
ed for the same amount
of money.
At the same time, a
tremendous saving of
taxpayers money would
be achieved.
HUDAC said it
recognizes the need for
certain families to
receive rental income
assistance, and calls on
the federal government
to investigate, together
She explained that in
the world of moose, it
is the cow who makes
the advances and start
the rut. She has had
some pretty scary experiences
from calling
Marshall, her son,
started hunting as soon
as he was old enough to
carry a gun. They
always lived off wild
Jane, who also knows
the excitement of hunting.
There will be einough sporting
events going on during Billy Barker
Days to satisfy even the most
obsessive sports fanatic.
Thirteen
major
events will
grace the
baseball
diamonds,
golf
courses,
pacing
ovals and
rodeo
grounds of
Quesnel
during the
four-day
annual
festival,
bringing
competitors
and spectators from across the province.
FOR BASEBALL FANS, the annual
Quesnel Senior Baseball
League (QSBL) tournament will
kick off Friday at 6 p.m. with one of
two Quesnel teams taking on an allstar
squad from Prince George.
Prince George is one of five outof-town
teams taking part in the
seven-team, three-day tournament.
Enderby, Grande Prairie and two
Vancouver teams round out the
draw.
Enderby, the current provincial
Intermediate titleist, will be back to
defend the tournament championship
it won last year by defeating
Fraser Arms of Vancouver 5-4 in an
exciting final.
And Fraser Arms, a Senior Major
team (Quesnel teams are Senior Intermediate)
which plays in the
strong Vancouver Metro league, will
be returning to seek revenge.
"They're (Fraser Arms and
Enderby) the two teams to beat,"
says Harold Swanson, president of
the QSBL. "But we don't expect
any of the teams to be a walkover.
Ball teams really rise to tournament
play."
Quesnel will be represented by
Billy Barker Inn and Bud Henning,
each bolstered by players from
Kopetski A's and Crisscrafted
Homes.
Barker and Henning earned a
berth in the tournament by being in
first and second place respectively
after last week's QSBL games and
are expected to push Fraser Arms
and Enderby.
Grande Prairie will be making its
eighth trip to Quesnel for the tournament
and could be a surprise. It
has never finished out of the money
at the event.
The other Vancouver participant
has not yet been determined.
Some names to watch for during
the tournament are Tim and Bill
Janzen of Prince George, the
catcher-pitcher combination which
is the anchor of the Spruce Capital's
all-star contingent; Jerry Reimer,
the inspiration and coach ' behind
Enderby's success who also plays
first base, and Brian Gibbons and
Jeff Collins, the core of Enderby's
infield.
The two Quesnel teams will
counter with the pitching of
Barker's Tom Spooner and Steve
Huska and Henning's Steve Mac-
Donald and Craig Cardinal.
Barker will be counting on the bat
of Ivan Malinoski, who led the team
with a .412 average at the mid-way
mark in the season, while the Henning
batters will be led by leagueleading
hitter Tim Kirkham, who
had a .435 mid-season average.
Lending prestige to the event will
be two umpires billed as being
among the top three in the province.
The umpires, Dick Christie and
former professional player Ozzie
Chaviria, were recruited for the
tournament by Swanson and QSBL
Umpire in Chief Adolph Jede.
"It will be a big plus," said Jede.
"A large part of any tournament is
getting good officiating. It's what
either makes or breaks a good tournament.
"The Billy Barker tournament
has a reputation for good officiating
and good ball."
Good ball is not free. Admission
is $2 per game or $12 for a tournament
pass. A final day pass is $7.
Old Age Pensioners and children
under lO-years-old are admitted free
of charge.
The final game is slated for 5 p.m.
Sunday.
FOR GOLFERS, two tournaments
are on tap during the weekend. On
Saturday it's the 18-hole Men's and
Ladies' tournament, while Sunday
the popular Mr. and Mrs. tournament
takes place.
Organizer Noel Pumfrey says 20
men and 10 ladies have entered the
Men's and Ladies' tournament so
far and he expects more entrants.
In the Mr. and Mrs. event, 33
local and non-local couples had
signed up as of Friday.
. S p o r t s
Billy Barker
Horseshoe Day
"The Mr. and Mrs. always goes
"People really enjoy it."
Chris Pawadachuck looked up
through squinting eyes at the burning
Quesnel sun beating down on his
body.
The temperature was 30 degrees
centigrade in the shade, and rising.
But Chris didn't mind. He had his
shades and his Swedish Tanning L07
tion and his chilled Perrier. And his
tan was turning a perfect shade of
golden brown that was sure to drive
them wild the next time he sauntered
into Brahmas.
Chris smiled as he turned his head
toward the ladies softbali game at
the Rotary baseball diamond.
The sun was so bright the bases
looked like they had just been washed
with Cheer. The ball looked like
a little blob of brilliant white light
bouncing back and forth in front of
him..
The glare blinded all the players,
no matter which direction they were
looking. He watched their narrowed
eyes and he wondered how they
could see at all.
He could see them blink occasionally
as rivers of sweat from their
foreheads dripped into the corners
of their eyes and stung. He felt his
own forehead and irritably wiped
away the single bead of perspiration
which had miraculously escaped his
neatly coiffed hair.
Chris looked through a haze of
dust and managed to pick out the
catcher. Like all the rest of the
players, she was wearing the long
pants and shirt of her uniform. But
he almost winced when he thought
of how hot she must be with the
chest protector and the mask.
Her hair was matted with sweat
and it looked like she was having
trouble breathing through all the
dust.
Looking at the catcher made
Chris feel a little warm himself, so
he switched his gaze to the fielders.
He watched them rock back and
forth on their toes as they waited for
the play. And he watched them curl
their lower lips and blow in an effort
. to cool their flushed faces, and lick
their lips in an attempt to bring back
some of the long-departed moisture.
Their vain attempts at cooling
down made Chris thirsty, so he took
a slow sip of his Perrier and turned
his head toward the swimming pool
on the other side of the park.
There was a swim meet of some
kind going on. He could see kids
jumping in and out of the water and
generally having a good time.
And he could see meet officials
with their nametags and clipboards
walking around the oven that was
the deck of the Centennial Pool.
From where he was sitting, Chris
could see vapours of heat rising
from the pool deck and he
wondered how long it would be
before those officials turned into
baked pototoes.
Every one of them looked like
they would just love to chuck their
clipboards and tags and fall into the
soothing, cool water hke the guy on
that Nestea commercial.
He admired their willpower.
Their cotton shirts with the garish
Hawaiin print designs were stuck to
their backs, and he could almost
taste the salt as he watched the
perspiration slide from their cheeks
into their mouths.
But the laps had to be counted
and the times noted, and the strokes
had to be watched carefully for
deviations from the standard.
No. They had to wait until the
swim meet was over before they
could get out of the oven. It reminded
Chris of Hell.
He sighed and turned to the
baseball game again.
It was in between innings, and the
fielders were so fatigued they
weren't even bothering to-warm up.
They just sat on the ground, trying
to stir up enough energy to pick
the grass.
They didn't even look like they
wanted to play anymore. But then
the ump called for the ball and it
was time to get up and look alive
again.
Chris sat up and looked at all the
fans watching the game. They looked
cool enough sitting there in the
beer garden with their shirts off cold
beverages beside them.
' They were enjoying the game immensely.
He paused to dab a bit of oil on a
pink spot above his knee, then he
looked past the fans to the game.
He saw the weary, sunstroked
players again, and he wondered if
they were enjoying the game as
much as he was.
